Gerry walked into the apartment the night Ko gave birth. Well. This had sure as hell been an eventful night. Found Keirra, became a dad, burned a few bridges. Big goings on!

He didn't particularly care that they were made at him. How many nights had he stayed up waiting for Keirra to come home and she never did because she was with them? Yeah. He decided he didn't really care if either of them were upset with him.

He walked into what would become his daughter, Nasya's room. Already a bit decorated before he left, he just stood in the doorway. Those blue eyes looked over everything, the crib, a pile of stuffed animals. Everything had changed in an instant. This was real now. Being a dad was not something he would be doing in the future. It was what he WAS right at this very moment.

His voice came out in a whisper. "Nasya...I'm sorry. I'm sorry for all the times I'm going to screw up. All the times I'm going to stumble. I'm sorry for all the times I'm me and I let you down. But I'm gonna be here, baby girl. Daddy's not going anywhere. No matter what. If I have to tear apart time and space to do it, I'm always going to try my hardest to protect you. And I promise..." He put a hand on her cradle. "I'll always love you."

He stood there, the moonlight pouring in through the window, dimly lighting the room.

It was bright and early and Ko was still conked out when little Nasya woke up. Gerry wandered over to the crib and scooped the little munchkin up in his arms. "Aww, hey, there pretty face. What you doin' up so early?" he said to his daughter. Immediately the girl stopped fussing and stared at him with those massive, impossibly blue eyes. "You're gonna wake up your mommy. And then you know what mommy's gonna do?"

Nasya giggled at him.

"That's right, mommy's gonna think daddy woke you up. Yes she is!" he said quietly, taking her into the living room. "Then mommy's gonna kill daddy! Isn't she?" More giggles left the baby as he repeated. "Isn't she? Mommy gawna kill daddy." He said in a silly voice.

For a guy who was vehemently opposed to becoming a father a couple months ago, he was taking to it rather well. "I tell you what, Kiddo. You are the most adorable thing I've ever seen." He sat and lay back on the couch, holding her up in the air. "Aren't ya?"

Nasya smiled, little baby laughs escaping her.

"Isn't my girl the best in the world?" He lowered her quickly toward him and swooped her back up. "EeeeeeYESsheis!"

Gerry grinned as the baby giggled. "EeeeeeYESsheis!" He swooped her down toward him again. This went on about 10 more times, before Gerry brought his daughter down. She lay against his chest, rising and falling with his breath, making little cooing sounds as both of them fell asleep on the couch.

Gerry leaned against the doorway, another night after another long day. His tired body carried him home, the walk seeming longer and longer every night. She was asleep, of course, with Nasya. He knew she would be. Ko slept a lot since he got home. The night out they'd had the past weekend only confirmed his fears about her. Something was very wrong.

Gerry's hand clutched the glass of whiskey as he watched the two of them sleep. He hated this. He hated that she was sad. He hated that it felt like if they DID talk there was distance between them. He hated that she barely looked at him anymore. He especially hated that he had NO idea how to help her, and nobody he really felt comfortable turning to for help.

He dimmed the lights in the room, closing the door quietly. The cold ignored, he stepped out onto their balcony, glass in hand and closed his eyes, listening to the quiet of the Marketplace around them. Some windchimes in the distance, the faint sounds of music coming from a nearby pub. The little sounds of a person or two going to and from. The wind breezing on by. Starscream sidled up beside him an sat, leaning her furry body against his leg. That brought a smile to his face and he scratched behind the dog's ears, getting a tail wag for his effort.

Home again, Gerry. Buck up. It'll get better. It has to.

Right?
