The door closed behind the last of her visitors and with a regally haughty grace Veronique rose and moved sedately across the elegant sitting room.
Gently she drew shut the door to her inner sanctum and traced one delicate hand along its ornate frame. Bowing her vividly scarlet head against it she stood for a silent moment, alone with her thoughts.
When the keening came it seemed to claw up from somewhere deep and primal. The high-pitched quality of the wail safely hidden from any observers by the wards that protected her room. As it boiled ever upward she slid down the wall, collapsing in on herself as great gulping sobs tore from her as if they would rip her asunder.
She was a dramatic individual in all things and grief was not treated any differently. Her shoulders heaved as she rent her bodice with sharply curved nails, raking open the icy-white perfection of the flesh beneath.
Tossing back her head in a river of flaming scarlet she screamed her enraged sense of loss in this sound-proofed room. Her aristocratic features coated by a slick sheen of tears. Torment became a dramatically beautiful tragedy as she released the torrent of loss that she had given no hint of in the meeting that had just occurred.
Beneath the watchful eye of Emilina and her successful contingent, Veronique had given no hint of this grief or rage as she conducted their welcomed return and subsequently dismissed Benedykt from House Satyrkiss.
As his newly scarred visage had become animated in his shock at her decision, she had smiled with a refined allure as she wished him well in his future endeavors...
.......the carefully contrived artfulness masking the wrenching sobs held until this moment of privacy.
Hours later, composed and perfect, she emerged from her chambers with a determination that emblazoned her icy eyes. She couldn't afford to allow Emilina an inch and would need a series of successes to cement her position as Overseer. Seducing recruits had just become a necessity.
