The Excavation Challenge.

This an OPEN SL for all Students of the IAP. Because competition is one of the methods utilized by the IAP to progress its young students, it is not rare for these sorts of challenges to be given throughout a given school year. Some are individual challenges and others are team based. This particular challenge falls into the latter category.

First and foremost, I want to make it clear that this is not a linear SL. Because this SL is primarily a thread based play and could take a few weeks to get through, I don't want you feeling like your character is 'tied up' and can't interact with others throughout the setting, such as in the RDI, the Marketplace, etc. I enjoy an in-depth story as much as anyone, but I also never want you to feel like your character is so busy that they can't be played. Feel free to run your character as you wish in live play with the Excavation Challenge as a background story until it is completed.

Also, The I.A.P. Superintendent will make appearances throughout the SL, though this only as a narrator and overseer. There shall be no direct interaction with the Sup, but don't be surprised if in the middle of one of your threads you find a post throwing in loop holes and sharp turns.

A little background -

The Institute is always excavating areas in and around the Southern Glen in search of rare and lost magical items, artifacts and stone. There is actually a more sinister reason behind all of this, though the public stance is that the Institute is simply exploring lost pockets of arcana that have built up throughout the glen over time. Different groups are arranged periodically to lead the excavation, with upperclassmen/women at the head of multiple squadrons to oversee the procedures. The organization is military comparable, with strict guidelines meant to be followed at all times.

Of course, there is a great deal of danger that comes from such deep unearthing, with everything from tunnel collapses to fissure eruptions - not to mention the possibility of shattering a celestial heirloom or breaking the seal of a forgotten vampiric vault. Students are encouraged to act wisely, and not give in to curiosity or temerity.

Where the story begins -

The story will begin with all active students brought into the central auditorium to be addressed by the Mastema himself, Arkon Daraul. The school has come across nearly three score of magical gates leading into the four layers (Khalas, Chamada, Mungoth, and Krangath) of Gehenna. Arkon wishes for the planar threshold to be crossed and then three tasks completed. One, the forearms of the NYCALOTH acquired with claws in place. Two, for an observation orb to be embedded around the nearest Yugoloth fortress, cathedral, or city. Three, once these tasks have been completed each group will return through the gate in which they arrived and crash it.

There will be 15 squadrons total (14 of them will be NPCs). Each squadron will be composed of four teams , each of which have a team leader and a second in command. Teams are NOT competing against other teams in their own squadron, but against other teams that make up the other squadrons.

This is a contest, with all squadrons competing against one another to be the quickest squad to complete their tasks and destroy their gate. To the winners goes a magical enhancement, an item of recognition, as well as bragging rights pertaining to this particular achievement.
Your squadron (Storm Sabre) is overseen by Sorceress Fleur Rousseau, with the team breakdown listed below.

Alpha :
Tiatari - Team Leader
Albion - Second in Command
Quillyan
Vliss
Blizzard

Zeta :
Brais - Team Leader
Faetha Numidor (NPC) - Second in Command
Ozalynne
Esteban
Akemi (NPC)

Omicron:
Angelica - Team Leader
Xera - Second in Command
Myraddin Numidor(NPC)
Kish (NPC)
Mystriana

Omega:
Damien - Team Leader
Mercedes - Second in Command
Ivinia
Uziya Grazuul
Quinnon (NPC)

Please use this thread to ask any questions OOC. Each team will get their own SL thread. Something along the lines of The IAP ? Gate Crasher (Alpha Team). I?d like to hit the ground running on this, so please remember to communicate as much as possible. This story is intended to push the limits of your creative boundaries, so please don't be afraid to think outside of the box and put your character on display for everyone to enjoy. Interaction between both the students and the story is highly encouraged, the fun in this SL will revolve around your involvement!!!

Team threads have all been created. Look for "As you come through the gate..." by this evening or tomorrow morning.

Considering this is a mainly thread-based SL, if at all possible I would like each team to work in a round-robin type of play so that everyone can be involved. If you want to work in the order listed with the team breakdown that is fine, but whatever way you think will work best for your team is what I'm after.

I'll use Team Alpha as an example.

The team is listed as:

Tiatari
Albion
Quillyan
Vliss
Blizzard

So, as they progress through the SL, Tiatari would post, then Albion, then Quillyan and so on and so forth, until they reach the bottom and then start again. This way everyone stays involved and no one is left out - and it also keeps one player from dominating the entire thread. Remember, we want to work as a group.

Doing it this way also means that you need to stay up to date with the SL. If Tiatari is ready to tell us how she responds to a scenario but Blizzard isn't around for a few days, that means that she has to wait...which slows down the SL and is no fun for her.

RL stuff happens, and we all know that. If you can't participate or can't find the time don't be afraid to send the person behind you a quick PM so they can "play through" so to speak. I absolutely want everyone involved, though not at the expense of the SL. We can always catch your character up.

Lastly, and I think I've said this a million times.

Be creative. Use whatever source of magic you want, whether it's D&D, or ShadowRun or Mutants and Masterminds or Star Wars or The Will and the Word, or whatever you've come up with on your own. Just be creative.

If in narrative it says that there are a million Lords of hell in front of you don't be afraid to unleash some fury on them. Remember, we are all writing this story together.

Good hunting!

The SL for all groups is going great. I'm glad we went with the thread based driver as it seems it is fitting for the time needed to get the setting right. I hope no one is frustrated with the amount of time it is taking. Now that everyone is back from the Holidays it should pick up pretty quickly.

The length is perfect. I'm glad to see we are staying away from the page-long response.

I guess what I'm really trying to say is: Great job everyone! Keep up the great work!!!

Considering that the Gate Crashers SL is coming to a head, I would like to finish off the rest of the SL in live play if it could be so arranged. We'll do two groups (Alpha and Zeta) on Sat and two groups (Omicron and Omega) on Sun. The final battle with the Nycaloth should be epic and will be better suited for Live RP.

I would like to do this around 6:30pm CMT if at all possible.

Please communicate with me and let me know what works for you! I want to make sure as many people as possible can be there.

You guys are awesome and I have been having a blast with this.

LET'S BRING IT HOME!!!!

Should be no problem, except I have been having issues having more than one name on at a time with Flash chat, so I would have to NPC one of the twins

I hate hate hate this, but I'm pretty booked up both days in the early evening.

I am not at all opposed to having Quill's actions "assumed." Whatever works best for you guys.

A quick change. Because of the Superbowl we aren't going to do the second set of teams on Sunday.

So, I'd like to do all four teams in Saturday, Alpha and Zeta from 6:30-8:30 and Omicron and Omega from 8:30-10:30?

Let me know!

I'm thinking about Wednesday Night? Let me know how that works for everyone. The only team left is Zeata.

Brais
Faetha (NPC)

Akemi (NPC)

If your character is not involved and you would like to play an NPC (Faetha or Akemi) Please let me know.
Sorry about the delay. IRL has been hectic and overbearing.

I may have some split attention... Got someone in the All-Ranks Tournament for DoM that night, but Angel here can attest to my multi-tasking abilities. ;)

::only looks sweet and innocent::

What was that about Midori?

I've got a class Wednesday night, but if we get out early, I'll totally show up to be Lurky McLurkerson.

Or I can play Akemi, if I can muster up the creep factor. ::SHUDDER::

If not, Quilly, I can muster the Creep Factor.

Hold on, hold on. I think I've got it.

Ready? Okay, here we go...

::clears throat::

"::Akemi, the creeper, creeps quietly in the creepiest corner, tossing that creeped gaze toward anything with, uh, orifices fit for creeping::"

Good?
