Topic: The Institute of Arcane Principle -- OOC Folder

Arkon Daraul

Date: 2010-01-11 01:40 EST
Essentially what we are looking for is young wizards, witches, warlocks, sorcerers and everything in between to come and RP out the evolution of their power. I'm sure that there are characters out there that just haven't STUCK and this is because, while they were supposed to be some sort of spell caster, there really wasn't an environment to bounce such a character off of. Thus the conception of the Institute.

Arkon Daraul has located an area south of the Southern Glen that is the overgrown remnants of an ancient kingdom renowned for its arcane library and wants to excavate these lands in search of whatever treasures lie within. The exact item that he is looking for won't be unveiled until further on down the SL, once the story is established, but that doesn't mean that there won't be plenty to find/discover/unearth in the meanwhile.

The reason behind it all is actually just a purposeful backdrop for the real story; the interaction and evolution of the characters involved. Arkon is also secretly looking to assemble a team of young wizards who will carry out his more devious plots without notice.

Consider it an amalgam of Slytherin and Grey's Anatomy.

With enough involvement, the concept will be centered around smaller, group-based SLs that will help grow your character individually as well as establish their spell-casting ability. This ongoing SL is not slated toward any certain type of character, and can be beneficial RP to any magic user. If your character is an almighty warlock they might not have as much fun as if your fledgling sorcerer is trying to make a name for themselves, but that isn't to say that we can't work around certain plots to involve the almighty warlock as well!

We are always looking for new creative minds to come and join in on the fun, so if this sounds enjoyable please drop Arkon Daraul a PM and we'll get you set up.

Thanks, and see you soon.

The Rules are simple. Everyone must attend. This challenge is to ignite interaction with the plethora of dragons that are roaming around Rhydin. It doesn't have to be a direct assault on them, though it can be if so desired. I would either like a detailed log and/or something written in story format. The Winner will be based on content and creativity. The wording sites the winner being the one who retrieves the bone the quickest, but this is for IC purpose only. The Winner will actually be based on creative substance. Good luck and have some fun with it!

Okay, folks.

Arkon came up with the idea that the students participate in the Duel of Magic, not realizing he has a certified (Should be certifiable) Caller in all three sports...

All Students Need to Clone their accounts onto:

http://www.ringsofhonor.org/index.php

From there it is advisable that you click on the "Duel of Magic" button and review the first two links, "Game Guide" and "Rules of Rank."

Sunday Night will be the first live session on RoH starting at 9pm EST. Tonight I will be holding basic training and calling practice matches.

If anyone feels comfortable, There is a All Rank Tournament on Wednesday that is open to all. Angelica is already signed up for it and if you just want to come around and cheer, feel free.

This training is really open to anyone interested. Again, I am a certified caller in all three sports with tournaments and challenges under my belt.

Also a SL opportunity was presented to me by the DoM Coordinator, Topaz.

The Announcement will be cross-posted in RoH.

Hey guys, I was only able to stop by for a little bit during your training for the Mage duels and thought that everything looked great. Thank you to everyone who was able to come and participate.

Also, I was made aware that several of the students of the Institute were able to jump on and actually participate in the duels the following night. That is awesome, guys. Keep up the great work.

Don't forget that today is the last day to register for the All Rank Tournament. I would like to have as much participation in that as possible.

There is a two match a week requirement, and please feel free to post about it, or at least leave the name of the person you dueled and if you won or lost. It doesn't matter, but I'm sure we'd all like to know how the school is doing over all.

Thanks a lot, and keep up the great work!!

I'm wanting to do Celeth's class sometime this week if possible, so could everyone interested post times and dates you'll be available?

This won't be a campaign type thing, so to speak - I plan on it being very interactive. This won't be three hours of Celeth 'lecturing'.

I don't want to completely spill the beans, though, so I won't go into too much detail.

Also, should I start an OOC thread with a poll to get a better idea of days people would be able to play this? Any ideas on organization would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: One more thing. Pretty much all shapeshiters (unless they're true changelings or something like that, and you'd not need this class in that case) have a form or two they develop a particular affinity with. This is usually something that in some way matches aspects of their personality.

For example, as most of you have noticed from playing with him, Celeth's are the dire frostwolf and the ocelot.

Put some thought into what your character's affinities will be, this will be one of the major plot points of the class, and there is a lot of character development potential there.

(Hell, Celeth may even give some insight into why his affinities are what they are.... :) )

Hello. Wasn't sure where to post this, so here goes.

With Arcanum Academy holding lectures throughout the summer I want to extend an invitation to the players in your group to partake. If any are interested feel free to PM me. The list of lectures in the Playables post isn't all that will take place, just a list of the more noted ones.

I look forward to hearing from all of you.

IAP Insignia Badges have been given to all active Students and Faculty of the Institute. These Insignia are imbued with arcana that allow admittance beyond the magical barriers that guard the school. Without them, entering the Institute and remaining within it takes a great deal of abjuration magic and focus. Check your inventory.

The potential for mischief... As a teacher or a student, Esteban?

As a student, of course. While I imagine the staff gets into all sorts of interesting predicaments, the student body is generally much more prone to that sort of behavior.

The Helping Hand

The IC -

Arkon has decided that the best way to help cultural relations with the city is to have the students of the Institute visit orphanages around Rhy'din and spend a few hours every week teaching young children just the beginning workings of magic. Nothing more than cantrips. How to change the color of your eyes, or make the broom sweep the floor by itself. Nothing real intense, but enough so that they feel like the visits are valuable. At the end of each session children are given a small pin that resembles the IAP Insignia Badge and sent upon their way. The reason for this is to track who has already been given lessons so that there is no doubling up. The Institute wants to make sure that all of the orphans get an equal opportunity to be taught the wonderment of magic. Students would be instructed to evaluate their transient pupils, and if any show real potential with their spell craft to let one of the administrators know. Perhaps a scholarship could be managed, as well as a reward for the student who recommended them.

The OOC -

This is, in fact, a way for Arkon to harvest potential wizards from the city while under the guise of a concerned samaritan. The badges are actually imbued with small portions of magic that make them easy to track for those in tune with the casting. Students would only be made aware of the cultural relations aspect of this procedure.

What I want from you -

Show me what your student is doing to progress these visits. Whether they are fully behind it and see it as a way to amplify the school's reputation, or irritated that they have to waste time with a bunch of orphans - or something in between. Feel free to create orphans or orphanage faculty, or to interact with pre-established Orphans and Orphanage Faculty in Rhy'din (Interaction with other players is always encouraged and welcomed) and please don't hesitate to use the NPCs provided here. Everyone has done such a great job in DORM LIFE that I am excited to see how your characters respond to this sort of challenge.

Please feel free to post your character's interactions and involvement in the SL folder here .

Great Job last night to everyone who attended the Dorm party. Please feel free to post any follow up events that occurred afterward. There were several intriguing events that could have resulted in a number of different outcomes.

Also, Arkon is gearing up to begin an excavation challenge, but before I do that I'd like to get a little more interaction in the Helping Hand SL as, down the line, it will play a significant part. It doesn't have to be anything real important or earth-shattering (or long)...just something to show your student participated.

Again, great job last night!!

I know, I've gotta do thing a bit differently.

With Carowyn, it is governed by a Council of mages, so magically it is very strong and less in flux like Rhydin.

I discussed a few things with another player of the Carowyn SL and this was borne from that idea.

;)

And while Ilyona is being used as an NPC here, she is very much a PC.

Fun Fact A: When I walked into the English Dept. office today, I ran into a couple of colleagues having a debate over the proper pronunciation of Charon's name ("ch" sound or "k" sound?). He also, incidentally, made it into the final I'm giving tomorrow, due to his appearance in The Inferno, Canto 3.

Fun Fact B: An IAP wardrobe thread would be hilariously redundant.

Amazingly accurate and very creative. I really enjoyed reading Vliss' reaction. Bravo, bella.

Fun Fact A: I've always pronounced it with the 'Ch' sound. Not sure which is actually correct, but since childhood I've always said it that way.

Fun Fact B: I don't know what would make it more hilarious - the irony or the redundancy.

HowlingMoon I've been incredibly impressed by your use of the NPCs and your interaction with the students!

I agree, and encourage everyone to do the same. Howlingmoon and Quillyan do a great job of using the NPCs to enrich the setting and I want everyone to feel comfortable doing the same. Remember, don't be afraid of portraying them wrong. They are NPCs. They are what you want them to be.

Oh, and finally, a quick apology to Mystriana. I jumped the gun in my response to the Team Omicron SL and thought that everyone was in. Please feel free to jump back in whenever you are ready. I'll make sure to be more observant in the future. ::darkly sheepish::

Mercedes let's see your response in the Excavation Challenge thread so we can get moving, yea?

And Arkon, I think we need a thread for Application Letters and then we can move all the ones we've gotten so far into it, yea? You're so much better at that mod stuff than me....

And I'm just going to second everything Arkon said! I go back to work in a week and a half and I hope to keep the ball rolling! It's been hella fun!

I will see about splitting up those letters and putting them all in the same thread. Great Idea!!

Also, I wanted to mention something. As just a reminder, the Dorm Life thread is a completely OPEN setting where interaction - especially unprepared - is encouraged.

If you have a set SL or scene please feel free to create another thread with the following format:

The IAP - New Thread Title.

There were a few questions asked OOC about involvement in some of the things going on in Dorm Life and I wanted to assure everyone that there would be no chance of stepping on toes.

A perfect example of this is the Akuma Taijiya thread. It started between Brais and Ozalynne in Dorm Life and then evolved into its own stand alone SL.

Keep up the great work gang.

First day of classes, for me, was today. I'd recommend not going back, if you can help it. They just stare at you like they want you to talk to them, then they ask some stupid questions, and then they try to hug you.

Jamie Foxx

A few items:

A) Cleaning House. I know I'm silly about this but I like to have a streamlined forum. A new thread has been created for Acceptance Letters. For all of you who have written Acceptance Letters (Quill, Esteban, etc) if you could copy your original post in that thread I'd totally appreciate it. My Organizational OCD is Going Bonkers.

B) For those of you who have discussed with me the possibility of having your character involved in the IAP please please submit your acceptance letters soon (this goes for those of you thinking about it who haven't done it yet) I plan on having the Deaconess review them today or tomorrow and would love to get room assignations done. This is done for IC motivations from the Dark Mistress of Shades and Shards and I enjoy making matches that I think will inspire roleplay. So get those in!

C) For those of you waiting on me to 'review' your acceptance letters thank you for your patience I've been swamped! I promise it will be done this weekend.

Thank you!

Done and done!

While we're at it, I have a couple of questions, which I might as well ask publicly, just in case anyone else shares my curiosities --

Where's the best place to put IC responses to the absolutely awesome Mysteries/Gossip? Dorm Life?

Also, is NPC creation completely open - is there any sort of review for that, or can anyone throw an NPC up in the class roster?

BTW...you guys rock.

Arkon Daraul

Date: 2011-01-23 12:10 EST
Glad to see the boards are back up. We were pretty much down all day here and I was worried that when I woke up this morning I would not be able to access them. Huzzah.

Quillyan: Yes, IC responses to the Mystries would probably be best suited for Dorm Life. Considering that is the format we use to keep the meat of the story telling in and around the school public, I think that would be the best place.

And to answer your second question, YES!!! By all means, please feel free to add your NPCs and creations to the school. Just remember that by creating NPCs you are giving permission for others to use them however they see fit.

Everyone has done such a great job with Sartha, the Mistmarks, Jolie, Cadence, and now the Infirmary director(Can't remember her name) as well as all of the other NPCs. I look forward to seeing more.

The school is really starting to be a focal point of RP on this site, and I think that is a direct reflection of the players that are involved in it. I find myself anxious to see "what's next" every time I sign on and I've been told first hand by numerous players who aren't even involved in the Institute that they log on looking forward to reading our stuff.

I'm excited and impressed with everything and has occurred and want to encourage you to keep up the great work people!!

Well. I've found a little ditty for our resident firebrand, not coincidentally performed by her "look-alike". Seems to fit the current mood, wouldn't you agree?

What The Hell lyrics

You say that I'm messing with your head (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
All 'cause I was making out with your friend (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Love hurts whether it's right or wrong (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
I can't stop 'cause I'm having too much fun (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

You're on your knees
Begging please
Stay with me
But honestly
I just need to be a little crazy

All my life I've been good but now, I'm thinking what the hell
All I want is to mess around and I don't really care about
If you love me, if you hate me, you can't save me, baby, baby
All my life I've been good but now, whoa, what the hell

What... what... what... What the hell?

So what if I go out on a million dates (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
You never call or listen to me anyway (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
I rather rage than sit around and wait all day (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Don't get me wrong. I just need some time to play-ay (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

You're on your knees
Begging please
Stay with me
But honestly
I just need to be a little crazy

All my life I've been good but now, I'm thinking what the hell
All I want is to mess around and I don't really care about
If you love me, if you hate me
You can save me, baby, baby
All my life I've been good but now, whoa, what the hell

La la la la la la la la... Woah... Woah...
La la la la la la la la... Woah... Woah...

You say that I'm messing with your head
Boy, I like messing in your bed
Yeah, I am messing with your head
When I'm messing with you in bed

All my life I've been good but now, I'm thinking what the hell (what the hell)
All I want is to mess around and I don't really care about (I don't care about)
All my life I've been good but now, I'm thinking what the hell
All I want is to mess around and I don't really care about. (if you love me)
If you love me (no), if you hate me (no)
You can save me, baby, baby (if you love me)
All my life I've been good but now, whoa, what the hell

La la, La la la la la la, La la, La la la la la la la

Thank you.

Going to move things over to Deviant.

I'd like to make a slight alteration to the way student rank appears in profiles and in the class roster. We've had them done by year and title and I would like to get rid of the year. While originally we thought the idea was sound, I don't think that advancement through the ranks of the Institute is based on years of study but actual achievement. I think this will make those titles such as Mage and Sorcerer more meaningful if there is no length of tenure associated with them. For some students it may take three years to become a mage and for others it may take ten.

I think this will add depth to the school and give a better chance to RP your character if you like to play them as advanced, on target, or a little lacking.

So, with that said, if you would please modify your ranks in your profiles by removing the YEAR I would be much obliged.
Well done and carry on!

Hmm, hate to be impatient.

I'm willing to vapor the NPCs but I don't want to do that with a PC.

Vliss Arcanum

Date: 2011-02-23 22:35 EST
Yea schedules have sucked for most this month. Hope things smooth out soon (I know I need it).

Vaporing PCs is never a good idea, unless express permission is given and even then a tricky thing to get right.

Speaking of PCs, however, is anyone interested in playing a created character? I've got one I'm not too happy with that I hate to see go away but am thinking of either A) making her an NPC or B) giving her to someone who wants to run her.

PM me for details.

Arkon Daraul

I agree. Wrapping this up has been a blast. Everyone is doing so well. There are times when something like this can be very hard to play, especially in a freeform environment, based on the fact that people are so protective of their characters that normally they don't want to see tragedy befall them.

This isn't supposed to be easy. It is supposed to be dangerous. Life-threateningly so. It's what makes the outcome hold weight.

There were times last night when I could feel the struggle and the pain.

Blizzard Xera and Angelica played having their soul's sucked out by the Nycaloth so well.

Myraddin with the wound to the back of his leg.

Vliss' sorrow at the barren earth trying to lure her in.

Mystri's initial frustration with the Handmaiden.

Quillyan's paranoia and then her paralysis.

Tiatari's madness from using the black magic.

All of this was fun to read and play off of, mostly due to the acknowledgement of what they fought. Any of you could have just acted immune to the outcome to ensure that your characters came out unscathed, and in the end you all seemed more than willing to endure whatever hardship came in order to achieve success.

As Proximo would say - Gladiators, I salute you!

Great job, gang.

Just like with Vesper's challenge, there has to be consequences. Angel is going to have some long term stuff because she is 1/2 human.

Neither Twin is indestructible. Harder than normal to hurt, but definitely not indestructible. Angel is more the brawler than her brother too, so this should be interesting Weds .

With that said, I'm hoping that this week might work out a little better. Monday nights are bad and tuesdays are the duels, but that doesn't mean we couldn't try to do both. Wednesday and Thursday are pretty free.

I want to get this wrapped up so that we can move into the Masquerade Ball. Keep an eye on your Student PMs, there will be secrete missives sent soon regarding the SL that will take place the night of the ball.

I hope this isn't considered spam or an unwelcome intrusion and is posted in the right place. While I was made aware of the Institute by Artemus quite some time ago, lately I have seen quite a few IAP associated characters on the Isle during dueling nights. I am unsure about the level of interest in our game but it appears to be higher than other folders/areas.

Since I rarely read RDI as much as RoH and I presume a high possibility of the same, I was thinking IAP players might not know but could appreciate the announcement of our new playtesting tournaments.

The IC thread is on www.ringsofhonor.org's forum under Twilight Isle and Neo Eternity's OOC DoM v4 rules change post is in Duel Of Magic (OOC). The basic idea is to allow all twelve moves to everyone, and add a swords/fist fancy move system.

We would appreciate the participation of anyone interested greatly, as the point of this special tournament and the ART the following week(which will also be playtest rules) is to see if the changes help the lower ranks parity. Following the ART, we will have a poll in the DoM OOC forum for input and if positive implement the new changes.

Thank you for your time and if this isn't welcome mods please delete.

Also, feel free to PM 'MurOllavan' (DoM asst coordinator) or 'Neo Eternity' (DoM coordinator) either here or on RoH with DoM suggestions, comments, or bitter recriminations.

Natolii

Date: 2011-06-12 14:09 EST
Mur,

We appreciate the heads-up. We've been attempting to get a little more involved with the ROH crowd and the dueling arenas. This might entice a few of our players to journey over and give it another shot.

Thank you!

I'm not sure what was funniest,

Leda's: "Perhaps you could teach me how to do this ... friends ... thing?" Leda murmured back to Quilly. "I'm afraid I only know the kind of friendship that begins and ends with naked bodies."

or Quillyan's response after a momentary pause of amazement: "It's actually not that hard."

OR

Blizzard's toast: "As Smout'n would" "....never..." ".....say."
"Down the mother #$%^&* hatch, yo!"

With demure cranky little Quillyan's response: The perky novice, all wide-innocent eyes, mutters something that sounds vaguely like " #$%^&* Smout'n" before drinking again.

OR

Trying to figure out who is dueling next the gentlemen both rise to the challenge:

Esteban Velasquez Pardon me, Blizz, but I don't think it's quite proper to double-team a lady before the correct introductions are made.

Blizzard Vaughn He chuckled. "I guess that depends on the lady."

AND FINALLY

The room Stopper:

Xera: "Oh what the hell do I know. I'm screwin this whole thing up. I've got to be the only person in the world who has a husband, a boyfriend, a girlfriend AND is STILL a virgin." And with that she chose to down her next tankard.

Blizzard Vaughn Facepalm.
Quillyan Daewen Then simply stares at Xera in bewilderment.
Rachael Wynter "Mon dieu."
Esteban Velasquez ::You could almost hear the brakes locking up on his train of thought.:: Say what???

Natolii,

Fantastic work with the mentorship program! I love the way you broke down the graduates, those on probation, leave, excused and unexcused, etc. Great work!

I look forward to reading more interactions from Mentors and Mentees.

Everybody Else:

Also, I just wanted to second Quillyan's post. It is great to see how much this has grown. I love getting on and reading more posts (Great additions Leda and Khordan and excellent use of NPCs).

It was good to see such a turn out at the Isles and I'm glad more are taking a chance on the duels.

Friday night is Pool Party fun and for those who are up for it I'm thinking tonight might be a good night for an encounter with Zansy's spawn. Any students willing to tussle and throw their spells around for more than drama (though please don't stop on the drama, I'm lovin it)?

And this is a reminder to myself to throw a poll up regarding the best night for the Masquerade Ball. Poor Viper Fang has been planning this shindig for months IRL now and it is time to get it going.

Take care everybody! See you soon!

Arkon Daraul

Date: 2011-06-17 17:48 EST
Let's play a game.

Because of how popular the school has become the number of students has grown dramatically, and with this, the nicknames we find in the Winds are really starting to grow in number.

At first I was going to dedicate a section to having the writer of the Winds tell us who was who, but instead I thought it might be more fun to see who was paying attention and could put faces to nicknames.

Take your shot.

Who's who in the Winds?

Quillyan Daewen

Date: 2011-06-18 08:45 EST
Can I tell you guys how bummed I am to have missed the pool party last night? (Wait, wait, rhetorical question, you can't say no.)

REALLY (all caps, italics, AND bold) bummed. Unfortunately, I can see the next week or so being really hit-and-miss for me because we're moving. But it's all good. I'll get an IC explanation up as soon as I can. ;-)

Now, as for the Gossip Winds Nicknames, I've a HUGE love of the Winds, so I think I could probably name them all, but here are a few (going down the class roster thread - I'll take page 1):

Mystriana: Moody
Ozalynne: CottonCandy
Brias: Frostbite
Blizzard: Pugilist
Albion: Bookend
Fleur: Flower
Angelica: Princess
Xera: Flamer
Quinnon: Quinnon
Akemi: Creepy Cupid
Uziya: Pantydropper
Quillyan: Featherweight
Vliss: Barbie
Numidor Twins: Storm and Strife

Heh. Those are probably the easiest ones.

So glad to see that someone reads the Winds they're really not the easiest thing to write (though sometimes I hit a flow and it's on like grits and gravy...yea, I totally just mixed some metaphors like a spoonful of sugar in my rumblytumbly belly)

Okay so here's what you've got so far:

Mystriana: Moody
Ozalynne: CottonCandy
Brias: Frostbite
Blizzard: Pugilist
Albion: Bookend
Fleur: Flower
Angelica: Princess
Xera: Flamer
Quinnon: Quinnon
Akemi: Creepy Cupid
Uziya: Pantydropper
Quillyan: Featherweight
Vliss: Barbie
Numidor Twins: Storm and Strife

Though in your defense, Quinnon only appeared in an earlier version as the rarely mentioned Dampener (and hopefully I didn't accidentally just leave her name in an unedited version...must now go look)..and PantyDropper got a name change to PantyDiviner though either way not Uziya...Ziya is the KenDoll. In earlier tales he was the perfect match to Barbie...

Quill's totally winning this thing. I think I'm going to hand out an icon for the Winds. Oooh now I have to make an icon.

A new playable has been posted in the IAP (Wrong Turn). Please give it a looksie and hop aboard if you're interested in more interaction.

Icons for Whispering Winds will be available soon.

Tentative Date for the ViperFang Masquerade Ball will be Friday, July the 8th. Subject to change.

And finally: Please keep OOC bickering away from the roleplay sessions. Rather than delete posts arrive at a way to roleplay around the scenarios presented within them or communicate more clearly the involvement expected before posting.

Just a quick note.

To all those of the IAP that played with me and my (admittedly infuriating) creation tonight, thanks a ton! You guys were a lot of fun, and here's hoping that Jacen will be like that irritating grain of sand in your eye that you just can't get rid of for some time to come!

By the way, I would like to note that no one should take the things Jacen says, or the things he does, as a personal attack - the character is meant to be caustic, rude, infuriating, troublesome, a source of discord and strife and generally a gigantic pain in the @$$.

Here's hoping that you just love to hate him, because that's just one of the things he's here for!

Patience Powell

Date: 2011-06-26 02:31 EST
I concur. Loads of fun tonight, thanks everyone for being involved and showing me such a good time!

And Jacen ... dude, you couldn't cause offence even if you tried. I was laughing too hard to proof read my posts because of you!

There will be consequences... Shadow Challenge (Closed)

Please note that this is a Closed SL to all except those listed in the Challenge declaration, the House Overseers, Arkon Darul and Satariel Shah. All PC's and NPC's listed as participating are out of circulation for the duration of this challenge.

The list of those out of circulation are as follows for the duration of this arc:

Cinder

If things go well, I hope to have this arc finished prior to the Masquerade.

Patience Powell: "Oh god ..." Dissolving into giggles once again, it was a moment before Patty got a hold on herself. "Stop, stop! I'll bust my ribs!" Shaking her head, she made a real effort to get control of her laughter before speaking again. "Hogwarts, it's a fictional magic school, made up by someone on Earth? Has four Houses - Slytherin, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and the other one I can never remember. But the IAP's like that?"
Elkinid Qualn: He was still working on a comeback for Alaric. Damn it.
Alaric Granger: "So wait..."
Elkinid Qualn: He had one....
Elkinid Qualn: ...wait. No. Still working.
Patience Powell: "So who are the good guys and who's evil?" she asked with a wide grin.
Alaric Granger: His playfully dancing green eyes alit upon Patience, "A slithering griffin humped a what?"
Elkinid Qualn: "...that's sounds disgusting."

Elkinid Qualn: "Wait."
Elkinid Qualn: "Hufflepuff?"
Elkinid Qualn: "Sounds like a new name for Sartha."

Sidenote: Natolii I love what you've done with it already and I look forward to the roleplay.

Oh damn you all for being so awesomely impressive!

I take one day off and I get things like "such a pedantic b*tch about dialects" in reference to Mistmark which causes me to snort coffee all over my keyboard!

Quilly, you and Leda are awesome sauce in those caverns. I'm dying inside as I try to decide where to even start after all that awesomeness! Seriously. I was all like UH HUH UH HUH Uhhuhuhuuhuhuhuh (picture Emperor's New Groove) when Quillyan blew that revenant to chunks.

And then Patience's "tour" was fabuloso! Seriously what a great look at the teachers of the Institute! I was impressed! That had to take some research and exhibited a fantastic skill at writing within a confirmed and created setting.

On that note I'm going to go do my workout now with visions of swimming creepy crawlies, and tomb shambling corpses, and the IAP staff dancing in my head.

I shall return to blow up the boards posthaste!

Also, if anyone is interested I have the Starting Spellbook charts for each of the schools as outlined in AD&D's Wizard Spell Compendium. I know I have been asked in the past for help with this. I started digging through my books to setup for the Shadow Classes and Expedition. ;)

This is by no means exhaustive and only meant to serve as a basic guide to help in fleshing out a character, especially for players that are new to some of the concepts presented here. It's meant to enhance play, not limit it. Which also means if you want to play a dual specialty that is barred to your primary... Go for it. The Shadow knight was designed that way back in 1998.

One of the fabulous aspects of playing in a setting like Rhy'Din is the universality of the available options to base your character around. While some of us might draw extensively from DnD (specifically 4th edition) due to the background we have tabletopping we welcome other interpretations within the setting.

The list and information provided by Natolii is an excellent tool to help expand your options and choices when exploring a mage but do keep in mind that whether you desire to draw from "Charmed" or David Eddings' "Will and the Word" or a shamanistic approach or even straight ancient mythology is entirely up to you.

I am reminded of a conversation I had with a certain wonderful someone who said, "I don't know the first thing about playing a spellcaster..."

Make it up as you go along dear. ;)

Whereas I pull on 2nd-3rd Ed as well as different systems including Rifts, Shadowrun, White Wolf Games and stuff that has been developed by a core group of players I have been fortunate to work with over the last 15+ yrs on AOL and here.

This is the DM that used "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" in the Avatar Triology Forgotten Realm Adventure before it became a Animated film.

In the end any guides I post are meant to aid not hinder and the biggest rule in AD&D I tend to follow is this one.

"At conventions, in letter, and over the phone I'm often asked for the instant answer to a fine point of the game rules. More often than not, I come back with a question - what do you feel is right? And the people asking the questions discover that not only can they create an answer, but their answer is as good as anyone else's. The rules are only guidelines." ~David "Zeb" Cook 2/9/89 (pg 3 AD&D 2nd ED DMG)

With Wicked Intent

Date: 2011-07-09 11:01 EST
Interestingly enough, I have only ever played in freeform settings, but I have read through enough tabletop RPG rulebooks to know the 'guidelines' saying well enough.

This is actually my first real attempt at playing a dedicated magical character, and to be honest I'm drawing off of a number of different inspirations to do it, to include some of my own antics when I was just a stripling convincing my teachers that I was the son of the devil.

The Encyclopedia Magica idea is a good one, because it gives those of us with little experience in this regard a base to work with. Another idea (just for use as reference material, understand) is to find a copy of the Magic sourcebooks from any number of RPGs. My personal favorite is any from the Shadowrun series - the books are written with not just spells, but ideas for disciplines of magic that are extremely adaptable. There are inspirations aplenty just in that one series for anyone that wishes to look for it.

I have to also say that this has become a routine stop for me in my daily rounds of the forums, for the endless and highly awesome reading I often find amongst the various threads. This board rocks, and I plan on making Jacen a long-term part of it. Thanks for the opportunity!

Arkon Daraul

Date: 2011-07-09 15:02 EST
Obviously I?m probably a little biased, but I think that this group of writers is VERY talented and does a great job of keeping the SLs and Threads in constant motion. When looking at some of the other threads, Dorm Life is a statement to the longevity of our creativity, and I?m proud to be a part of it.

I strongly suggest drawing magic from all of the available formats, and not limiting yourself to the structure of one certain type. Mix it up. Have spells from D&D, Shadowrun, Mutants and Masterminds, and then any other source you find acceptable, including your own imagination.

I think the best quality this group of writer?s have is their lack of fear when treading into new areas. I?ve had several of you tell me that you weren?t sure where to draw from and that you didn?t ?know magic? only to read a post or two and be utterly impressed with what you came up with.

Keep up the good work.

Wicked ? You?ve done a great job of stepping right into the fray. The type of character you are playing could be very difficult to navigate without pissing someone off and you?ve done a good job of making him accessible?and susceptible.

My apologies for my absence: I have finally found some light at the end of this tunnel and escaped the bonds of IRL for the weekend.

Because there hasn't been a chance to do much prep for the Viperfang Masquerade I'm postponing it again until next weekend. We are looking at a late Saturday night or a Sunday afternoon. The threads for that SL will be created this weekend (clothing and costumes and the wickedly twisted plots planned for this event). Natolii has agreed to handle the making of the icons so I hope everybody plans on attending. More Coming Soon! Promise!

This weekend will wrap up the portion of the HuntingGrounds/WrongTurn SL that deals with the contest by Praysin. This does not mean you are not welcome to continue to enjoy the delightfully dark craftsmanship of Craven Delights or plan more encounters with Zansanette's offspring, only that the conclusion of the Amulet Quest will have arrived. Icons forthcoming for those who participated.

There are other great things in the works. SatyrKiss is experiencing an expansion and I hope you're ready to see where those characters are willing to traipse.

And check out the newest member of the Faculty!

Keep up the wonderful writing and rping as it is the Siren's Call that continues to lure.

With that said, massive kudos to Natolii for the Shadow SL!

Seriously. What fantastic conclusions to the Amulet Challenge. It was such good reading that I was disappointed when there wasn't another page to turn to.

And every one of you who participated not only told stirring tales but added twists and turns to your characters while even introducing new storyline arcs.

I'm incredibly impressed. Watching Leda's growth and confidence emerge while balanced against the incredibly creepy and detailed monsters and spellcasting in Albion's tale and the RIDDLES (OMG I LOVE RIDDLES) of Quillyan's tale!!! Where do I even start with the awesomeness?!

Oh, I will certainly be making use of this. Just wanted to say that the party last night ROCKED!

+bouncy+

So much so that it gave me several great ideas, the first of which will be in Jacen's next post. And while his next move in this grand game will be done in such a way as to keep him safely anonymous, I hope everyone enjoys it.

great write-up, had to go back and amend my own post to include it.

And sorry I missed the party last night, as well as being quiet lately. Between IRL and a gimped connection playing has been a hit-or-miss, and mostly miss. But hopefully I'll be able to get back into the swing soon. Until then, I'm enjoying reading the posts going up.

More intricacies to come!!

Though I do have to throw out a HOLY HELL Iameth darling, you're a wicked bastage aren't you? I love the wrap up of the Masquerade! Adore it! Isabel certainly turned out fascinating and I do believe Veronique's "chew toy" reference will have me chortling to myself all through these stacks of journals, essays, book reviews and vile other-must-be-graded materials.

PS -- I need a signature quote. One that makes Quilly seem smart and interesting.

With Wicked Intent

Date: 2011-07-29 00:51 EST
For the conclusion to the ViperFang Ball thread...all I can say is WOW. Absolutely, utterly fantastically written. Seriously, that was amazing, from one end to another.

And for Quilly: being a fan of Nietzche, I firmly believe that the man has a quote for everyone and everything; and as it happens I think I found one that fits her rather well.

There is an innocence in admiration; it is found in those to whom it has never yet occurred that they, too, might be admired some day.

- Friedrich Nietzsche

Feel free to disagree, I've only had limited interaction with her at this point. It wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

Ashriel Iameth

Date: 2011-07-29 10:27 EST
I appreciate all the kudos guys, it was a fun piece to write.

As far as the Nietzsche quote for Quilly, that's pretty dead on in my opinion.

My contribution:

For we pay a price for everything we get or take in this world; and although ambitions are well worth having, they are not to be cheaply won, but exact their dues of work and self-denial, anxiety and discouragement. - Lucy Maud Montgomery

And a bonus Iameth quote (For Sat's enjoyment):

Whether we fall by ambition, blood, or lust, Like diamonds, we are cut with our own dust. - John Webster, The Duchess of Malfi

I couldn't resist being a fly on the wall at the ball with another character of mine, I thoroughly enjoyed watching all the chaos that ensued but I also add a WOWZA to the ending written to conclude it! Such intrigue, such deceit, such...glorious yumminess! Phenomenally done!

So we finally threw together a walk-through, GO US!

Any questions please please please feel free to post them here as I'm sure someone else might share the same concern. Also, while IRL has thumped me rather severely and limited my RP time that does not mean we've lost track of the love of roleplaying. If you're not particularly interested in writing a mile-long narrative regarding your character's ascension please keep in mind that roleplaying it is definitely an option. We will definitely take into account your character advancement be it chat roomed or thread based. ;)

I'm so excited to see what all of you come up with and encourage you to interact to make it more interesting! Pull in some NPC's and come up with reasons to send your characters rollicking into each other for assistance, advice, skills, and potential scapegoats (mwahahaha). Don't limit the interactions to the school alone, I'm sure there are many characters out there in the lands of Rhy'Din that might be a boon to your SL.

Study sessions! Cram nights! Meltdowns! Quests! TeasNTomes Recovery times! Blowing-off-steam Dueling at the Isles! Drinking yourself into a coma at the Inn!

Let's Do this ThAnG!

So I know we've got plenty going on right now and am crazy behind with the current SL's but I (of course) dreamt up something amusing for you and yours to play with.

Society/Clubs.

The school needs some hobby organizations. It doesn't have to be now by any means, after all we're way busy with Mentor programming (don't forget the helping hand SL!) and ascensions. Buuuut, if you were looking for another way to bounce characters off of one another I would love to create a Society/Club linked to a hobby of some kind.

I think the basic rules:

3 or more members needed
None too alike (if there already is a Bone Collectors Club for the Necros we don't need another one)

And that's really all I got right now.

I actually had this thought awhile back when Quillyan mentioned something about a Book Club but then I got to thinking instead of just the Houses we need Organizations. Hehehe.

Some Silly Ideas off the Cuff:

Shapeshifters or Illusionists Club (Impersonation Night! Come as your favorite celebrity? Come as your favorite teacher?)

Hockey Booster (Alaric, Blizzard, and Mystri play for RHL, who else wants to come along?)

TeaDrinkers (Sample teas at the TeasnTomes read some tea leaves while you're at it)

Mixers (Think Alchemy)

Flyers Club

Aquatics

Duelers

Other ideas?? Have fun with it!!

Something to play with anyways...

(And Elizabeth no more hurting yourself!)

SOME APPRECIATION

I wanted to give a special Thank You to PawnofFate for the fabulously delightful Mabon Celebration. It proved to be a wonderful backdrop to bring the IAP students out and about. I look forward to seeing what else you come up with and promise to encourage attendance and interaction!

And Shell of Vindication, Katt, Henrietta Crystal, Ranger, Raye, Icer and Co. I appreciate your openness in allowing a group of IAP students to attempt a rescue mission with the potential risk to muck up your storyline. I also must give you massive kudos for rolling with the sudden influx of unexpected guests (*of course only after one of us asked permission to engage). This kind of cooperative freeform warmed my heart and is giddily appreciated. THANK YOU!

Kain, It was not our storyline to crash but we certainly enjoyed having an antagonist to go up against -- your ability to recover actually became a point of interest to some of the students and I will encourage a post to reference it. These kinds of connections are inspiring! And I look forward to this becoming a part of the ongoing narrative. THANK YOU!

To Albion for encouraging us to play our characters true to form and rush to the rescue despite the initial discomfort of entering into a roleplaying scene with strangers, to the new Kids with the IAP gamely agreeing, to the old kids with the IAP sticking to their character's ideals, I can honestly say this was a shining example of cooperative RP and I adore you all.

A toss of his head sent blonde locks flaring as he slammed the potion with a frat boy's finesse. Immediately the tendons in his throat stood out in protest as his jaw clenched shut to force the rebelling motions of his body quiet. First and foremost, I would like to say that all of the players involved in both this and the Shaitan Covenant folder ROCK, from the founders of the whole storyline all the way up to the newest to join in on the action.

That being said, it is my sad duty to report that I must remove, for an indefinite amount of time, both this character and Dillon Astikas (SN: The More Things Change) from the clutches of the IAP and from play in general.

Unfortunately, I have too much going on with my other characters in other storylines to be able to afford to devote any time to the writing of these two. I have greatly enjoyed my time with you all, but with my other characters invested on a number of levels with other stories, I would hate to have those involved in such an incredible story waste their time on interactions with mine that will, in all likelihood, never come.

Please accept my sincerest apologies in this regard. I would like once again to emphasize that I feel that it is not my time I feel I would be wasting, but yours, and I have no wish to do so.

And, once again, you guys and gals KICK @SS!

As I feel this is good knowledge for everybody to have I'm going to post this here, but as this is obviously in direct reference to your parting V (Sidenote: Best of Luck and Happy RPz to ya) please feel free to PM me any details you'd like to discuss or to remain in more private correspondence.

In the past when students have "disappeared" they've been put on "Unapproved Leave" and it has then been up to the player to come up with the reason for such action. Or, in the case of expected absences, "Approved Leave" was given for the students based on yet another variety of reasons (Good example of this would be Moir's Diplomatic Leave).

We are totally understanding of time management issues (RL always trumps) and there are times when characters/storylines aren't being cooperative and/or moments where other commitments interfere.

But to avoid any chance of miscommunication or opportunity of ruffled feathers I strongly encourage the players to come up with a reason for their character's disappearances. For one, it makes for a better storyline for all involved, and for two it keeps the creative control of your character in your hands. Interpretations and perceptions by others is the art of good improv and free-form writing so make sure that the ones being created are the ones you'd like to see occur.

I like to imagine all of us are collaborative writers telling one gigantic novella, or perhaps screenwriters putting together a long-standing television show. When characters simply disappear for lengthy amounts of time it makes for gaps in the story if there is no reason put in place. There are many times in television shows where actors/actresses must take a break (most notably pregnancy/birth) and it takes limited creativity to spin a quick tale as to why the audience is no longer seeing that character for the time being.

Have fun with it! Let it add depth to your character and give you an opportunity to expand on their own SL when you're ready to return to them.

Thank you! (This post will probably appear in an administrative sticky thread near you! All proceeds will go to feeding dustbunnies and sock golems. Support your local chaos!)

Once again I must say one of the writers in our midst delights me to no end!

From the spooky and powerfully portent revelation of Quillyan's mantle as one of the "seven" to the tumbling of a House of cards, I was incredibly impressed, intrigued, and definitely entertained.

You're CANDY girl! Yummdidliocious!

I always hesitate about giving kudos because I never want to feel like I've overlooked anybody but then inevitably one of you will do something so kick ass cool that I have to say something and break my general rule of oooooohhing over everything! ;)

I'm muchos INCREDIBLY impressed with the creative talents you all continue to showcase. I love it! Such a great escape from IRL!

Ms Nat I adored the scene! I cannot wait to see more from Nat and her misbehaving (read behaving) son! I foresee great storylines with Vliss and Nat both influencing the already torn young man. Yes! Can't wait to read more!

Saphira! Way to throw in something sweet and motherly right in the middle of all the debauchery and twisted depravity. I adored it! I could totally see the room she set up for the girls and the surprise arrival of Kish was icing on the cake!

On a sidenote: ewwww creeeeeeeeepy said the Siren. ;)

And all the dorm room fun! Bayliss and Amadeus way to jump right in!

You all inspire me!

Hola, folks.

Just a quick note, taking a little breather from the public for a bit. Had a couple issues come to light recently that hit rather close to home on the stress front. I'll be on AIM and FB from time to time, so feel free to ping me there if you see me.

But no, this isn't permanent. Just a "vacation".

Heads up, bosses! Accidentally double-posted in the Dorm Life thread, so I just threw a Polyvore set into the spare entry. Feel free to delete that post.

Not sure why it's happening. Normally, I would totally blame my strategy of hitting the refresh button the very second my browser isn't doing exactly what I want it to do, but even when I edited the aforementioned post, it showed up as edited twice.

Spooooooooooooky.

(And enjoy your break, E!)

It's a good read, Cassidy!

Here's a suggestion to avoid double posting. Leave a second browser window or tab open to the thread you are working on. If the window you posted in drags, try refreshing the second to see if your post is already showing. Had that happen to me more than once.

Also, you should be able to delete your own post in a thread provided nothing has been posted after it.

Risa is building something out of ice in the Glen and it is a HUGE project.

I would love to have permission to associate the IAP with the building of what is in the Glen: either by simply mentioning their involvement or actually mentioning individual mages with talents in ice magics if any of them would like to be associated with Winterfest and what's being built.

(For an example, I would mention the IAP generally in assisting in building whatever super secret stuff is being built in the Glen in a playable, or I would specifically mention the appearance of mages specializing/encourage IAP members interested to write about working on this 'super secret' project for Winterfest in their personal threads and folders.)

If that isn't cool with anyone or you're not comfortable with any of this, let me know that too! It's okay! I totally understand!

Here are the playables and threads about Winterfest for now if interested:
Winter Wonder in White
Darla Von Sprusseltink: Keeping you in the (s)know!
There's going to be a new King & Queen in town

PM or IM me anytime!

By all means, please feel free to include the IAP in this SL. There are a number of students who specialize in elemental magic so the availability for assistance would be rich. I encourage any students who want to be specifically involved to do so.

Risa, how would you prefer these students to be a part of it? PM you or simply respond here?

Thank you for the opportunity to join in.

Risa Jones

Date: 2011-11-10 10:49 EST
I'd like them to PM me, pretty please, so I can let them know what Risa is working on in the Glen--but to keep is secret for the big Reveal on the 15th!

That way, students can still write about their experiences working on The Big Secret Thing, write their own playables if they want or create their own SL's around it--but I can still keep it semi-secret for the big unveiling for December 15th!

Of course, if students would also like to help with any of the games, booths, effects or fun for Winterfest too (and not just mages specialized in water/ice) they are more than welcome to do so, too!

As for the opportunity to join in, I really do want it to be free for anyone ;) I look forward to hearing from anyone in the IAP and seeing any contributions they'd like to add!

Thank you!

After a long week of IRL stressers to log on and find numerous posts that further your character's story is a truly cool prospect.

Talk about encouragement to jump right back into the RP Pool!

Thank you Albion, Ilyona, and Bayliss for your additions to the Fae Baby Storyline. And of course to Piper and Nina and Company for giving me the opportunity to play in it.

This:

Thick storm clouds blackened the sky, the molasses' pace of their roll leaving a lasting impression that would endure until morning. Not a single sliver of moon or starlight breached the oppressive veil, casting an ominous gloom over the Institute of Arcane Principle. Rain fell in sporadic tears as the tempest hibernated briefly, the thrum of resonating gloom indicative of a gathering force, as though the real storm had yet to be unleashed.

is awesomeness.

I'm transported. The storm is all around me, the Institute looming upon the horizon of my creative imagination, the weight and foreboding of the storm beckoning me to give myself over to the story that is about to unfold. It's like flicking on the television and immediately getting caught up in the scene.

I'm in.
Totally in.

Don't ever stop writing.

I hate it when that happens.

Especially when you start out with an idea that turns into poo.

I have this little thing I do when I'm blocked...

...I slam my head on my desk and use every profanity I can think of.

It normally doesn't help with the writing, but explaining to your kids that you?re not insane is a good distraction.

Well..

I tried that..

Didn't help with the writing as predicted.

And I couldn't explain to my dogs and cats what I was doing. So that bit of entertainment was lost. Woe!

I guess I'll just have to power through... or write something completely different.

Quillyan Daewen

Actually, I?d be totally open to making one for someone else?s character(s). I?m by no means an expert and require a lot of patience, but I?ll be happy to give it a shot. I?ve basically reached the temporary end for my own characters, since QD is the only one who has ample film clips available.

That being said, I?ll need a bit of help locating YouTube videos that contain clips of the actor associated with your character (in the style which ?fits? your character). The best clips have some type of unified ?feel? and don?t have writing/logos. For example, there are a million clips of the actress representing Bayliss from the show Once Upon a Time, but many of them show her with long hair OR have the ABC logos in the corner, so those would be less preferable to clean shots in a proper atmosphere/representation.

I know many ?homage? videos use a bunch of still photos, but I haven?t really tried that yet and can make no promises. Once I figure it out, I?ll Ken Burns the sh*t outta some pictures and make the most bad*ss character slideshows ever, but until then, send me links to YouTube clips.

And music. Give me a few different song choices. Sometimes things work, and sometimes they don?t, and I?m not skilled enough to force it. I?ve been working on a video for Bryn that combines Emily Didonato running through a rainforest and Gnarls Barkley?s ?Necromancing.? You?d think it?d be awesome, right? Nope. Totally blows, and I can?t quite tell you why.

Anyway, if you want to try it out (anyone!), message me. I?ll send you drafts before I publish anything.

I just wanted to say one thing to that...

WHAT THE HELL, PEOPLE!?

Come on, this folder is WAY too cool to let it die like this! I know at least some of you have real life to contend with (I can respect that, because I do as well, not to mention the myriad other characters I have out there I'm doing stuff with), but there has to be more than just me that's interested in seeing the Institute continue to thrive and prosper!

Pleasepleaseplease keep in mind that I was discussing the SL with the other player and this was a scenario she suggested. I'm going to bounce things back and forth as much as possible.

I'm not doing this to step on toes just really shake up the twins personally.
