Hex had called a meeting of the top officers of the Legion of Chain. Commander Duket, the three Colonels and Captain Street were all requested to meet with the Commisar. The messages sent to each stated only that Hex had something important to discuss regarding the Legion's future.

In the army encampments outside the Association compound, the home of the Legion during peacetime, Hex waited in the command tent for all the requested officers to arrive.

He was returning from another scouting mission for land for the Den Community to be built on when the messenger flagged him down. He read the missive and dropped to all fours. He raced to the compound. When he reached the cobblestone pavement he stopped, stood, brushed off the dust and strode into Hex's command tent.

"Captain Wolf reporting in commander." he saluted.

Rishi waited patiently for the messenger to deliver the summons and then stood up, putting her cloak on while she watched the messenger get nervous. She passed through the temple and her training Elites without saying a word, arriving just behind Street.

She said nothing to Hex as she came to a halt and bowed to him, then stepped back out of the door to wait for orders.

Hex was looking over several reports, but paused long enough to glance up and nod to both Street and Verishia. Another few moments then the three were joined by Salbeth, Deacon, and Gemonom; the Legion's Colonels.

Finally Hex set down the stack of printouts and settled into a chair at the planning table, the vid-display in it's surface turned off for now. "Please, be seated."

After waiting for all five of them to sit, Hex closed it's hands one over the other and looked at each in turn. "It seems that the Legion will not be sitting idle for too much longer. I have already gone over the preliminaries of our new assignment with Lord Brutin and Commander Duket, but now I wish to expand on this with all of you."

"First off, I have tasked Commander Duket with assessing the new slaves obtained on Phaesia. Her first priority is to find those suited to military service with the Legion. I have asked that our losses be replaced, and that a further five thousand soldiers be conscripted. This will be a fourth Division, and as such we will need additional officers to command the new troops." Hex paused a moment for that to sink in with the Colonels.

Going on, Hex addressed the three officers directly, "Each of you are to go through your own men and find canidates for each officer rank. Submit the lower ranks to Commander Duket for evaluation, however canidates for the new Colonel are to go through me. I also want your current commands distributed so there is an equal number of new and old soldiers in all four Divisions."

All three Colonels started muttering at that, none were eager to simple dissolve the chains of command they had forged on Phaesia, but each also saw the potential disaster of having an entire Division of rookies. Waiting for silence, Hex went on, "Now, as to our next action. Miss Anne Bonny, of the Bonny Corporation has provided us with information regarding a potential new market for the Association. The worlds in question are technologically advanced, but quite anarchistic legally and morally; a perfect place to sell newly aquired slaves."

"At present, we have some sixty-five thousand slaves in stasis because the Association's current training facilities cannot cope with the influx. We need additional infrastructure to handle our supply. Furthermore, our existing market contacts cannot cope with so many slaves, without devaluing the overall price. If we flood our current markets, our profits will suffer. Thus, we need new market contacts."

"This brings us back to the realm pointed out by Miss Bonny. They are an untapped market for us, however there are slaving houses already established there. None can match the Association in sheer volume of business, but they are well established. We need their territory and their contacts to do business here, and they are not likely to simply hand over the reigns of control. We will have to dig them out and take over by force."

Another round of murmuring from the Colonels, then Hex nodded and continued, "Good, I see that has your attention. I do not want the Legion to sit idle, without orders or purpose, for too long. Such would both make the men soft, but would also disenchant those hoping to earn their freedom in combat, that otherwise would not be available. So, we will burn out the existing competition, then set up shop for ourselves."

"This is likely to be a long campaign, and it will be a totally new battlefield than many of you have seen before. Our adversary is technologically advanced, and quite used to the reality of a hostile environment. To overcome this, I have tasked Commander Duket with a new training regime that I want incorporated into the *entire* Legion. I want every soldier, from officer to grunt, to at least be familliar with the technology and weapons of our foes. When we can stand on equal footing in terms of equipment and training, then we will be ready to attack."

Now the machine finished it's monologue, turning to Street. "Captain Street. You will assist Commander Duket in this new training program. You will now be the drill instructor for the officers of the Legion. Once they are trained, they will go on to train their commands, and so on. Furthermore, I have a use for your Lupinossi Batallion. While the Elites remain the most well trained and equipped soldiers in the Legion, their numbers will limit them to small operations. I want your Lupinossi to fill the role of medium-scale commando operations. You will be the tip of the Legion's spear."

Settling back in it's seat, Hex crossed it's arms over it's chest and looked around the table. "Are there any questions?"

"Understood sir. I will train the officers as best as possible and look forward to working under Commander Duket. I do have one question, sir. Is there a possibility of detaching a small splinter of 20 Lupinossi to be tasked with guarding the Den community that is being erected? We have had some disturbing attacks of late." Street asked calmly.

The machine ran several figures in it's mind, assessing the situation in less space and most organics take to breathe. Despite the speed of it's thinking, Hex deliberately paused a moment before nodding and replying to Street.

"That can easily be accommodated Captain. In point of fact, you currently have 800 soldiers in your compliment, so detach 100 for defense of your new territory. That plus the resources of the Association as an ally should be sufficient."

"Aye Sir. I will detach them today." He looked to Verishia.

"Commander Duket. Let me know when you wish to start." He bowed his to her. He sat back and watched everyone.

Rishi turned to leave, motioning for Street so they could start the selection process but stopped as Deacon stepped forward, the quiet but intent man looking straight at Hex.

"I have a few questions." He said and silence fell as all present became surprised, all except Hex.

#Please continue Colonel# Hex allowed and Rishi turned to face Deacon.

"My first question is on tech levels. If we learn to fight in many tech levels our skills will decrease, Jack of All Trades, Master of None they say. Can we keep the legion at this max level?" He waited for a few moments and then made his second question. "As a division commander how much control to I have of assignments? I want to put my trained soldiers together in a unit and keep the slaves separate. I also want to make fresh units of the new men coming in so I don't lose experience."

Deacon finished and looked at Rishi, wondering what her reaction would be but she hid behind a stoic exterior, to show surprise would say she hadn't thought him possible of the questions, to smile would make him feel like a tool in her hands, to nod would be acting as if confirming something. She just stood there and turned her attention to Hex for the answer.

Hex listened to the Colonel's questions and points, nodding at each one. When Deacon was done speaking, everyone's attention was back on the machine, who thought things over for all of one second.

"I will address your questions one at a time. Regarding technology, we must not forget or neglect melee combat skills in favor of firearms only. While this may be simpler, it is not always prudent. Remember, not all worlds can support advanced technology. We were fortunate that Phaesia was not controlled by deities which restrict such things; or some other world on which advanced machines will not even function. Additionally, even melee weapons can be quite advanced, and the tactics and strategies of a war fought with sword and armor can still be useful."

Hex looked over to the other two Colonels as it continued, "We will continue to utilize the highest level of technology our battlefields support."

Looking back to Deacon again, "You will have nearly full control over assignments of your soldiers, with a few exceptions. As things stand now, with our small losses in Phaesia, we have slightly less than fifteen thousand soldiers divided into five thousand strong divisions. We will be adding an additional five thousand to the Legion, and none of these will be familliar with our ways or our training. In effect, these new conscripts will be totally untrained."

"To offset this, I want the new soldiers incorporated into the existing Divisions, instead of forming a new Division totally from fresh conscripts. This is both to maintain an average level of capability across the Legion, but also to ensure loyalty in the new formations."

"Deacon, regarding segregating your slave warriors and professional soldiers. I must deny that request. I will not allow another incident where slaves and non-slaves begin to consider themselves above one another on the battlefield. With the addition of five thousand new slaves, the slaves outnumber the professionals three to one." Hex paused a moment to let that sink in hopefully before going on.

"You may create new units with the fresh conscripts, however I want at least one experienced soldier in every squad level formation. I recommend using your experienced soldiers as Officers for the new units, however that is only a recommendation, not an order."

"Any further questions?"
