In another part of the Fortress

Lali yanked the goblin?s leash as they went through another part of the fortress and even doubled back and around once more. Goblins were not the brightest of creatures; it would seem forever a walk until they reached the temporary Lab of Taini?s.

Taini had found a quiet corner to have the crates stored. The crates filled with irreplaceable alchemy and astrology books and specialized equipment. They had been packed and transported with excruciating care behind the troop lines well away from any threat of battle damage.

It was only the pieces she could never replace, the rest would be bought in town and some materials could be harvested or bought easily enough as well.

?The Lady Taini owns you know. You will be like any trained animal fetching and helping anything she asked.?

The goblin bared its pointy teeth in a fearsome snarl and growl turning to boldly face the leather clad ritualistic maiden. Their cowl was thin leather and acted more like a bandanas doubling as a hood and eyeless mask. But they could see, see all too well. Lali smiled as she squatted down in her leather skirts.

?Maybe I should let you in on a secret, maggot. While you wear this,? Lali grabbed the collar they tied about his neck, cutting off the air in its tight hold. ?You can?t harm anyone. You see its mirrored surface holds a spell? any harm you attempt others is reflected back on to you at least three fold.?

She rose to her feet and pushed the goblin back when she released his collar. ?So I would take care of it if I were you, those small delicate mirrored plates, also reflect your life force, each one equals a fraction of your life.?

Even though the little monster couldn?t talk, Lali was sure he would comply.

It had been how many hours since the Grindsnout had been asleep he wondered. He had not been able to fall asleep totally. Even though the ground was smooth and cool. The crates even provided some shade. He wondered and then decided he didn?t care how long he lived. Resign or fight. He would maybe make the choice when the time came? Maybe the stupid humans would make it for him!

Sleep started finally between the heavy steps of guards and the swift pain that pippled through his head.

Stars and fog lifted through narrow eyes. His aching eyes followed the sharp end of a growingly familiar staff up the leather clad arm to the Witch owners face.

?Get up. You have work to do. Lord Dredd has been gracious enough to tell us which tower you will be moving my things to.?

She pointed towards a landing down the hall and within the faint view of stairs could be seen around a mill of Soldiers moving other crates, boxes, supplies and things the goblin had never seen before.

?Lali, you and the others, grab boxes too. I don?t want this to take all day. And you!?

The Grindsnout felt the heat of the growing good egg on his head before he heard the clunk of the staff against the top of his head.

?Be careful. I will break a bone in your body for every crack in my crates and take your meal for every item I think you even remotely damaged. So pick up what you know you won?t drop fool? She meant it; she would break and heal it just to re-break.

Taini turned and left the goblin to pick up a box that appeared too big for his size. But anyone who knew goblins knew they were not as frail as they seemed. Their body a maze of sinew and wired muscle made them perfect little laborers. She heard the goblin huff and grumble. Sort of grumble. She could just imagine what he was trying to say, but he was working none the less.
