ShadoWeaver sat on the kitchen table. Dark and silent.
Eva and Mason sat on opposites sides. Watching. Waiting.
The clock ticked.
?Is it supposed to do something?? Mason bent down, his cheek barely grazing the table as he stared at the opal.
?I don?t? think so?? Eva narrowed her eyes at the stone. She reached out and poked it, then quickly withdrew her finger. Nothing happened.
?Do you have to wear it? Like a necklace or something??
Eva frowned at the opal in distaste. ?It?s? kinda? big.?
?Grandmotherly,? Mason agreed.
?Yeah. Like a brooch or something. On an old lady?s hat.?
They both looked at the stone. ShadoWeaver just sat there.
?It doesn?t really?? Eva started.
?Seem scary,? Mason finished.
?Right??
They both jumped with a start as Wendy, their cat, leapt onto the table. She crouched down on her paws, sniffing and stalking closer to ShadoWeaver. Her ears laid back. She spat out a hiss at the opal. Then she gave Eva and Mason a reproachful look for bringing the thing into her home. Her tail thrashed in annoyance as she jumped off the table and skulked away.
Eva blinked. Then she looked at Mason. ?Maybe we should hide it somewhere.?
?Yeah.? Mason looked at the opal, then he slowly turned in his chair, looking over towards Charlie?s fishbowl.
Charlie looked through the glass at Eva and Mason. Then the little elven goldfish shimmied backwards, hiding inside his fishy castle.
?Hrmph.? Eva and Mason looked back at each other. Then at ShadoWeaver.
The clock ticked.
With a sudden scrape of her chair, Eva got up from the table, snatching up the opal. In the kitchen, she yanked open the freezer door and stuffed ShadoWeaver inside between a bag of frozen peas and a container of fudge swirl ice cream. Then she slammed the freezer door shut.
Eva looked back at Mason.
He looked at her, and then nodded. ?That works.?
Mason stared at the freezer door for a moment. ?Hang on.? He stepped past her, pulled open the freezer, and snatched the container of ice cream from the clutches of the opal. He closed the door and looked at Eva. ?Better safe than sorry.?
Eva grinned and grabbed the spoons. ?Good call.?
