Finding a desk had been a chore. It seemed the desks in this office filled very quickly. But she finally found one that looked a little dejected smack in the middle of the large office. Studying it with a slight frown, but not for the noise and activity around her. Jal seemed to be able to block those out in order to attend the matters at hand. All those years aboard a ship with wind and rain and storms creating the most ear splitting chorus left one with the ability to block much, or simply filter it for what needed to be heard. No, the frown wasn't for the noise, it was for the poor little desk. It looked like someone had pulled it from a refuse pile long ago. A tug confirmed though that the drawers worked. And there was something of a charm about it. Nodding to herself, Jal tugged a clean cloth from the pack over her shoulder. Adding some wood soap she'd bought in the market after careful conversation with the merchant, she'd set to work, cleaning away the wear of time, dust that would always be present in a newspaper office, and some rather unidentifyable gook that stuck to the edge of the top drawer.

After scrubbing for an hour or so, the wood looked dull and worn. And well it would. It seemed the desk had seen no loving care for some time. A grin offered to the few reporters that passed her, curious looks abounding, Jaleeisa continued with her self imposed chore. Another cloth yanked from the pack that now sat under the edge of the desk, a more careful hand found the beeswax polish she'd also purchased. Settign to work with a jaunty tune on her lips. Now this had been a chore she'd often enjoyed aboard. Polishing the wood to a high gleam, an inch at a time. She almost could hear the gulls crying out to each other, nearly could smell the salt in the air. Buffing the wax into the wood occupied her for several hours. But as she worked, it seemed a new desk slowly appeared from the old. Softly glowing oak took on a warm, mellow glow. The gentle swirls of the grain caught the light in the room and fed it back. It was almost as though the desk drew a deep breath, then relased it with a sigh of comfort and satisfaction.

After washing her hands several hours later, Jal paused at the water cooler to draw a small sip of water. Ahh.. the necter of the gods it was! Gray eyes moved back to her new desk, taking on a twinkle of pride as she studied it critically. Where before had stood a dark, dingy, unloved and seemingly unwanted piece of furniture was now sitting a softly gleaming well cared for sculpture of a wood crafter's masterpiece.

Returning to the desk, several items were tugged from the bulging pack. The first was one of the small paintings that had been done of her parents. This was settled in a place of pride, angled so that not only Jal could enjoy the sight, but others could see to fine work of the artist. A schooner crafted inside a bottle found a home off to the other side. The ship had been meticulously built inside the bottle by her departed Captain, then escorraled by a mage he'd found ashore. The bottle was firmly corked and could not be shattered, hence her comfort in placing it where her articles would be written. Inside, the schooner rode on a magically looped spell of water, small fishes could be seen from time to time.. dolphins.. those adoreable ship's companions. Watching it could have a relaxing effect and free the mind from worries or confusion, freeing it to concentrate on what was needed. Jal figured that would come in handy in the Oracle's office.

With a grin of satisfaction, Jal looked over her desk once more. Then scooped her pack up and headed over to find Des.. her next goal was materials to begin working with.

With a sigh, Jal leaned back into her chair, rubbing tired eyes. Opening the tired gray orbs, she glanced down at her desktop. Two completed, though admittedly short, articles lay on the blotter, ready for the October edition. A faint smile of satisfaction crossed her lips as she looked them over. She'd been determined to get an early start this month. Anything to keep Amal from glaring daggers at anyone in sight! By the depths that woman could make a demon pause! But she was right, they were all getting paid to produce stories! So Jal had resolved to get on the Editor's good side and get a jump on the next issue.

Leaning further back, a a hand raising to ruffle dark waves that seemed to get longer by the day. A booted foot nudged aside her journal holding the notes for the two stories as well as leads for a few others. Her smile widening as she took in the handsome writing set her Lifemate had gifted her with. As she settled bootheel more comfortably, the journal pages rippled, falling open at the notes she'd been looking over during her shift at the Inn. A faint frown puckered normally smooth brow as she considered it. Five men, all having been seen together at the dockside, but found wondering and not remembering a thing about their activities the night before. Normally the Watch would have thought they'd imbibed a little heavily the night before, but when five come up saying they have no clue what they're doing there, and others say they saw them together, something's up! The Watch had confided that they had been observing the five for suspected robbery, but a search of the five had produced nothing that would lead to an arrest. So, Jal would follow up on the tips she'd gotten, keep in touch with the Watch, who were always generous in providing help.

Yeah, she'd gotten a good start on the next edition, whether this story panned out or not. Closing her eyes, relaxing a moment, she allowed a very pleased grin to curve her lips.

As Wyh passed Jal's desk, she grinned as she saw her relaxing, and sprinkled ice crystals over her friend. "I have not seen you in a while - only at the Isle. What mischief can we find for October?"

An eye cocking open and up at her friend. "Well, for starters, these two stories there, already finished and ready for print. A mystery about five suspected theives who can't remember a thing. Hmmm.. what else?

Booted feet hit the floor with a "thunk". Thumbing through her journal, she glanced up at Wyh. "I've got a few more notes in here, maybe we can find something interesting. Maybe nose around the upper side of town. You know they can't all be as perfect as they think they are. I mean, there's dirt everywhere, right?" A wicked grin inviting Wyh to join in the adventure.

Wyh's silver eyes sparkled and danced at Jal's suggestion. "Outer perfection usually conceals inner darkness. I would love to sneak around the Upper Side and see what may be found. I have regained my thirt for adventure." She gave her friend a wicked little grin. "Let us find dirt together."

Gray eyes twinkle with mischief. "Now that sounds like a plan! Who do we dig at first?" Pondering this question a moment. "I still don't know very many people in Rhydin."

Wyh thought for a moment, then looked at Jal with mischief dancing across her eyes. "Perhaps if we take a stroll in the Upper Side, a story will come to us - and we can learn the names together. I know quite a few people now, but precious few live where we will be going. Then - maybe a stroll through the Market - I am still learning the proper way to shop."

Her grin widening as she listens, an enthusiastic nod. "Aye, nosing out stories, learning the names of the hoity and shopping!! Sounds like a grand day to me! And I can certainly teach you about shopping! It's become my fourth favorite sport in Rhydin! Right after.. well.. the secon and third are the Island and Arena." Her grin becoming teasing. "The first I'll leave to your imagination." Grey eyes taking on the deeply contented glow of a woman well and truly loved and adored.

"So, let's head that way, unless you have something to finish at your desk?"

Wyheree

"I had started a small piece - but it can wait. I would rather snoop and shop with you, Jal!" Wyheree went to her desk, swept the parchment and quill back into the drawer, and then makes her way back to Jal. "I am ready to go when you are!"

Tinkling laughter rang out as Jal scooped up her journal and small writing case, dropping both into her pack. Smooth swing to her feet, the pack coming to rest over her shoulder. " And away we go! Look out Upper Side, and beware shopkeeps!"

Tugging Wyh along with her, jaunty strides out of the office and to the street, where she let out a whoop. "Just what we need, snooping, shopping, bargining and bad guys!"

A wicked grin tossed to Wyh as they headed for the Marketplace. "I bet some of the shopkeeps would have a lead on some dirt!"
