Gavilean held his wife?s hand and listened intently, trying to understand all that?s being expressed here. Finally he spoke, ?I?m sincerely saddened by the loss of Alex, and I?m especially concerned for Icer, having lost her dear father. Yet, my wife is correct. We don?t publicly put on trial and judge people here at the Oracle; we simply report the news.
?You're telling us that you have ?suspicions? and a ?gut feeling?, yet all evidence appears to point in the opposite direction. Des and I are often in the inn, and we see and hear things. What I've seen is that the Lady Beresford put their son in the custody of Alex to protect the boy because she was in fear of her own life, and the reason she is with this other man is for her own protection, and there's no indication at all that they are engaged to be married. What mother would deliberately put her child in harms way? To put the son in the custody of the father, and then to tip of their enemies of their whereabouts just doesn?t make sense. If she wanted Alex dead, why not keep the son with her? The Lady Beresford had nothing to gain from this and everything to lose ? even her own son. Des is right; rulers of kingdoms always have enemies and threats upon their lives.?
He paused for a moment, then went on. ?This is a delicate subject, but I?m sure it?s going to be on the mind of all the good people of RhyDin, and therefore it must be asked. It is no secret that you?ve been noticeably absent from Icer for a very long time. Night after night she is in the Red Dragon Inn without your company. We all have often inquired about your health and whereabouts for at one time you two were a 'fixture' in the Inn.?
He paused again, hoping to word this as best he can. ?As Alex?s only heir, Icer will be taking the throne, and now that she has the royal throne, you are once again seen with her in public and being quite affectionate. Now, no one likes affection more than Des and myself,? he squeezed Des? hand, ?yet some might see your sudden return to her side as a maneuver on your part to take the throne. To be brutally honest, to our readers it would look like you would be the one person to gain the most with the death of Alex and his son, and that you are here in the Oracle offices in an attempt to deflect suspicion to Alex?s widow.?
He looked from Des and back to Aurthur, ?Again, we?re not here to accuse, try or judge, yet how would you respond to our readers to convince them that it was not you who tipped off enemies as to the whereabouts of your father-in-law and the heir to the throne??
He turned to a clean page in his notebook to record the answer. As a reporter it was his job to be discerning and to ask the tough questions.
