Evening, December 25th..

The hearth's flames looked distorted, but no matter how much he blinked he couldn't make them clearer. He had stared at them ever since he'd gotten up..used every ounce of energy he had slept to regain just to get himself into a seated position. He didn't want to look around..didn't want to focus on anything else.. He knew where he was..he knew that Katt was sleeping on the couch across from him..

But if he moved..if he so much as looked..he would be reminded of what happened, of who she was..to Mayu. Of what he said..did..almost lost..did lose..

As if the constant stream of images through his mind weren't enough..

He swallowed..his throat was raw. He had screamed..he knew..

"Mmph.." His chest was rising and falling rapidly..all on its own. He hadn't realized that he'd started crying again..until warm drops of moisture slid down his neck, dripped onto his stomach.

He'd done so much of this already..he was shocked that he had any tears left..that his heart and lungs could clench any tighter than they already were. No amount of massaging to those muscles could help now..

He wished, briefly, that they would just implode already..suck the rest of his body into that dark world of constriction and pressure so that he would be crushed into nothing..and he wouldn't have to come back to a world where he had practically destroyed the lives of his friends..

He sniffed, swallowed again.

It shouldn't..have affected him this much.. He had finally been able to pin down the errant, disgusting emotion that he hadn't lived a day without for the past week: jealousy.

He didn't want..to be jealous.. He didn't want to..want to hurt his friends.. He didn't want..

He hated it here.. It was always here..always this damned shop..where things went wrong. This couch, that stupid hallway that led to the restrooms..that goddamned kitchen..

When Mayu had launched herself at him..he had thought she was going to hurt him..and he didn't know why. Was it..because of what Katt said.. He had backed up into the counter..went down with her as she tackled him..

But instead.. "Kiss me, Toby."

He tried to tell her not to make him do it..but he knew, as much now as he did then, that he had lied through his teeth..

He had never tasted fire before..but he was sure that doing no less than that would burn him that much. Those few moments were scorched into his memory. Not only because they had been what had started it all.. But because he had the sinking feeling..that it would be the last time that it happened. He would..have to remember it.. The taste of the kiss had long since faded..but everything else..

He was kidding himself. Admitting the truth..putting words to the feelings that were fighting to burst out of his core..was as useless as a single match in a blackened out castle..

He was..wasting time here.. He'd already wasted..so much.. Mayu.. He'd left her.. All by herself..blind..lost..and he'd just..

"...mmph," he whimpered, pushing his fist into his chest as much as his body would allow. He couldn't feel it.. Was it because..it hurt that much..?

How could..he have been so stupid..

But..he had to make that choice..right?

What good was it.. What use.. He saved one friend..to lose another..? Mayu wouldn't even know..that Katt was alive..

"O-ow.." It wouldn't stop. He needed..to leave. He had to go back..find out what happened.. Mayu had said..that he would always be able to find her..right..?

"Hey, hey, hey now..calm down, or you'll gouge a hole through your chest. Here, Toby, give me your hand. Yes, give it to me.."

A warm, small and calloused hand pulled his away from his chest. His head tipped lazily to the side. The counter girl.. She was shaking out a white dish towel with blue stripes..used it to swab his face and neck free of sweat and tears.

"Now, I don't know any bit about what happened between you and that girl there.." He was hardly listening.. He saw the end of a broom handle sticking up over the arm of the couch. He could use that..

"...don't care what you do with women on your own time away from here, but that's just my point. You do it away from here. Just have a look at the state she's in, hardly practical for.."

He could smell mustard..and meat. It cut through the stench of blood that he'd forgotten had taken over his senses.

"...sandwich that I made for you that's heavy on the meat. The last time I needed to make you one of these, you had lost a significant amount of bl-! Hey, just where do you think you're going!"

He had reached over and taken hold of the broom handle, brought it close and leaned heavily into it..somehow making it to his feet. The empty vial swung and bumped into his chest. His groggy mind told him that the head of the broom would soon become annoying to work with.. He angled it and brought his foot down. The handle snapped free of the broom's bristles.

"Oh no you don't, mister, you're going to sit down this instant and rest yourself. What do you hope to accomplish in your condition?"

His only goal was the door..get to the door. He would figure out what to do..when he was outside.

He felt those same hands on him again.. They were scratchy..too hot. He rolled his arm, swung it back behind him loosely as he continued on. He hit something soft and fleshy that stumbled back and said 'Ooof!'

"Stop! You stop right minute! What of your friend, are you planning on leaving her here half naked? What sort of man are you?"

The door handle was cold in his palm. He leaned his forehead into the glass..his skin stuck to it. He sucked down breath after breath..but didn't feel like he was getting any air whatsoever.

Katt.. Could he just.. Wouldn't it be like..making the same mistake over again..?

His lips pulled back from his teeth. He sobbed out his answer: "Take care..of..her," and staggered out the door into the night's waiting shadows.

The inn's warmth felt weird on him.. It didn't help. His skin was clammy and cold. He had made it there, though.. That was the important thing.. Even if he didn't know why he'd come.

To start looking..from somewhere he knew..? That didn't make sense.. He knew that tea shop..better..

He had sank down into the nearest chair, slumped forward onto the table. The broken broom handle fell from his grip..rolled away. He wheezed for breath..but the air somehow got lost on the way from his mouth to his lungs.

Someone grabbed his hair, pulled his head back. Silver eyes..the clanks and clatters of metal..

They wanted to know..what had happened last night.. He recognized the voice..

Lisa.

He didn't want to talk about it..not this soon, not with her.. He didn't even know why..she was here..

His face met the table with enough force to break it. She held him by the back of his neck, applying pressure.

She said that he had made a mistake..that he had surpassed his limits.. But that meant..awakening..

"I didn't.."

She said..that it didn't matter.. That if she was able to sense his yoki release, that those even more skilled than she would be able to..

"I didn't awaken!" He cried out as she pulled him to the ground. He felt the wood buckle and dent beneath him. Something shattered in his face..adding to the throbbing already in his head. Cold fear splashed on the inside of his chest.

He heard voices..Ixora..someone else. They were trying to get Lisa..to stop. They sounded..angry.. Like they wanted to attack her.. He had to get up..he had to get Lisa's foot off of the side of his head.. Not only because it hurt..but because..he couldn't let them hurt her.. This was..just her job.

Lisa's voice cut through the rushing blood in his ears. She was telling them to back off..that she would kill him..if they didn't. He grunted, settled a hand on the metal of her boot. She was smaller than him..but stronger. He couldn't..even budge it.

The pain was lancing out the conversations around him..everyone's voices turned into a giant buzz. He heard Lisa ask Ixora if she noticed a change in him..golden eyes. Something tingled at his temple. The piece of wood that had been stabbing into his face..didn't hurt anymore..

"You will come to the usual meeting place, tomorrow, or suffer the consequences."

The immense pressure let up on his head. Breath rushed into his lungs..

Tomorrow.. He couldn't stay here..he had to go..find Mayu, and bring her back to Katt.. He squeezed his eyes shut as they started to burn. He couldn't..start crying again..

But what would Lisa do..if he didn't go..?

He didn't think..he had ever not wanted to die..so much..

His arms were taken up by Ixora..and someone else he didn't know. He found himself in another rickety chair. He slumped forward onto the table before him again. He hoped..he wouldn't be slammed into this one too..

She was..asking him questions..the same ones Lisa had asked. She wanted to know what happened. He wasn't paying attention. His body..felt warm..tingling.. The nausea was going away.. His cheekbone mended itself. He was..being healed..?

Without the pain to occupy him..he felt tired..

He didn't want to answer Ixora's questions..about why Lisa was there, about what happened. He wished..that she would have stuck around..to help them find Katt. Maybe..if she had been there too..

"She..stabbed herself.." he said finally. He didn't want to go into detail..about why she did it. He figured..that Ixora would form her own conclusion. He didn't want..her to blame Mayu.. "Mayu..thinks she's dead.. I have to.."

The man who healed him..had left. Toby didn't know him.. He pushed into the table, used it as a shelf to get to his feet.. He hadn't thought further than that.

"Where are you going? Do you even know where she is? Or where to start looking for her?" Ixora's questions..were the same as the counter girl's.. He shook his head, staggered towards another nearby table. The problem came..with the amount of free space between him and the stairs..he needed something to hold onto..

"Do you need help?"

He nodded.. Admitting it..wasn't so bad. But he hadn't expected her to pick him up..and carry him to his room. He bounced on the bed when he was put on it..weakly throwing out his right hand, fingers clawing at the cardboard box on the nightstand. He felt the remnants of wrapping paper..

Ixora..was talking about random things.. He wasn't paying attention..but he formed answers, short ones.. He drew the cardboard box to his chest..forced the flaps open. His hand delved into the cold material of the hoodies there. They were soft..smooth.. Just like he remembered.. He made a fist..rolled onto his side. He curled himself around the box..closed his eyes..

Moisture coated his lashes immediately. He knew..he shouldn't be here.. He should be outside..trying to find the way back to Fuka.. Katt said that she'd gone home..right..? He hoped..she had found her way.. Thinking about her still huddled by the trees..because he had left.. It tore at him.

He vaguely heard Ixora leave. The darkness pressed into him, coaxing him into unconsciousness.. If he was to meet Lisa..

He didn't..have enough time..

He muttered into his pillow as his muscles gave into relaxation.

Lisa's player. Thank you!! ]

Afternoon, December 26th..

The way to the glen..was long. He didn't have a stick to hold him up, but that was fine.. He was able to get there without falling down..more than twice.

He didn't have to wait long at all. He saw her step out from behind a cluster of frosted trees. There was no sunlight..but she glinted anyway. His friend..one of the only two that had been around him the most.. She'd saved him..several times. He wouldn't forget that..regardless if it was just because it was her job..

"Lisa.."

"You are late," her voice sliced like her blade..like her blond hair was now, lancing in front of features that he couldn't read. Toby grunted in response. He wanted to say..that they hadn't worked out a time beyond 'Tomorrow.' He hadn't been too sure that this was the right place anyway.. "You made the right choice in showing your face to me, Toby."

"Mmph.." He didn't advance..and neither did she. At first. The hand at his chest clenched and his body went tight as the rhythmic tsks of her boots rattled with each move she made. She was getting closer to him..

"Do you know why I asked you here today." It wasn't a question..it was a challenge. To see if he actually had the nerve to follow her up with the 'No.' that was dancing on the back of his tongue but he didn't really have the courage to say.

So he didn't say anything. Lisa peered curiously at him with her flat silver eyes..until his own gaze lowered.

"That is typical. I shouldn't have expected anything more from you." She was small..but she spoke like she was the one that was a foot taller. Toby swallowed, kept staring at the ground. He felt..young..

"This is where it happened, was it not? Your generous lapse of self control has put you and those you are daft enough to call friend in a dangerous position, Toby. Had you the amount of mental capacity required to make even the basic functions possible, you would have realized as much. Alas.."

His head shot up so quick his eyes spun. It was a mistake. He grunted..shook off the feeling of vertigo. "I.. I tried.." He didn't..like stuttering.. And it seemed..neither did Lisa. She scoffed at him as she folded her arms across her chest.

"Unfortunately, you did not seem to try hard enough. You are required to sever your ties to that which you hold close to you, to these," she paused, her impassive features briefly twisting, "people. Your connections to that which you hold dear, your ties to your old consciousness are strained and broken, and they have been strained and broken even since you joined the countless that share a fate such as ours."

She was telling him..to leave..telling him the same thing that he had already known from the very beginning. He had tried to break the bonds he hadn't wanted..he knew..what being around someone like him meant. His eyes scrunched shut. "It..I..I won't..do it again..Lisa.." He sounded..like he was begging. He wouldn't deny that he was.

"Don't be absurd," Lisa said, the brief clicks of her armor as she moved his only warning. It wasn't much of one.. He grunted..swallowed again..against the edge of the blade now at his throat. It didn't waver..and neither did her eyes. They were narrowed on him. He felt drops of moisture hang onto his eyelashes. He didn't..want them to fall..

"You, who are so foolish enough to place yourself within these situations, honestly believe that you possess the right to a second chance? I should dispose of you where you stand for even the mere suggestion." The hand gripping her sword clenched and she pressed the razor edge of the blade into his skin. It bit into him..he shuffled back. It took only a small pivot of her wrist to force the same edge into the dip between his neck and shoulder. He found himself on his knees before her..or risking the loss of his arm. The weight she was putting down onto him..hadn't let up.

"Then..why.."

"I'm disinclined to answer your question for I do not speak in a language that you understand. Otherwise, we wouldn't be having this problem. Whatever your bond is with that white haired woman, cut it loose. Human emotions such as love will serve you no good in the long run if you still wish to draw breath tomorrow."

White hair..she was talking..about Katt.. "Mmph.." He shrugged under the pressure of her sword..pushed at it with his hand. He shook his head. He couldn't..do that..

He had to..fix this.. At least at first.. The thought of leaving them all now..made him sick. "I..can't.."

"You are correct. You cannot. But you will in the end. You will just have to be forced to do so." Pain slashed into his shoulder as she thrust her sword forward..effectively sending him to the ground. Under his coat..his skin felt wet. He pushed his face into the snow. It melted..hid the tears. "Either way, you are facing your own demise. You are no longer the boy you once were. If you continue to foolishly unleash that which is inside of you, you will be barreling the down the road to destruction. Something that I am told would also destroy those which care for you."

He heard a splatter..the sliding of a blade back into a sheath. Then her footsteps. They were..getting further away..? He didn't want to look..just in case he was imagining it. He felt the same way as he did the night before..he still..didn't want to die..

"We are allowed but one thing. The option to choose the manner in which we die. I truly pity you for being unable to see the right one. Pray that you do not cross my path again. I, unlike you, am aware of my own correct path."

He felt the absence of her presence. His gut relaxed..quit churning around uncomfortably. It wasn't because of fear..

He grunted..pushed onto his back and stared at the stormy gray sky. He could assume..that Lisa didn't want to really kill him. Because she had had several chances. He didn't think..it was because she cared. She'd said she pitied him. That made sense..sort of.

In the end, it wasn't important. He was still alive..still here.. He still needed to get up..

And he still..needed to fix his mistakes..
