December 19th..

Toby pulled Mayu's coat up against his chest..held it there. The vinyl was cool on his skin..he could feel the air being pushed out of it. His head swiveled, eyes followed Mayu's cold path. She'd disappeared..already. A small part of his mind told him not to worry, that she would come back..that nothing else would happen to her.. It wasn't a big enough part to battle his anxiety, though.

He heard other people talking and laughing, but their voices were muffled. This was..her school. Her home. She had..friends here.

That's right..she'd told him to get out of sight, didn't she..

His fingers curled into her coat as he turned, started down the hall. He didn't remember which door she'd said was hers..but that was fine. There were small nameplates next to each one. At first, he thought he couldn't read the squiggly little pictures, but underneath them were even littler letters that he recognized. He went up and down the corridor..and only saw one door with the word 'Mayu' written by it. He reached out his free hand and gripped the handle, turning it. He wondered..

He blinked when the door swung inwards easily. He ducked inside with a last glance at the hallway..eased it closed behind him.

The room was a little spacious, shaped like a capital L..and seemed to be made of three colors: tan, white and yellow. The wall he was facing was mostly taken up by a single bay window with a few white curtains drawn away to either side. Bordering the window's left side was a bed with dark blue sheets..another bed with lavender sheets on its right. Both..were messy and unmade..and had a desk situated before their footboards, books of all sizes on top of them.

To his right was a small kitchen area with a fridge, sink and stove. The floor gleamed. There was also a place with a lot of flat pillows and bean bags situated around a black box resting on a low table. He'd..never seen anything like it..

He took a deep breath and held it. The room..smelled like flowers and fruit. His chest felt lighter, less constricted. He liked..this room. It was a lot bigger than his. But it was pretty and really bright.. Yellow sunlight splashed onto the wooden floor from the window..and the curtains were teased by a gentle wind.

He stepped further into the room, his knees urging him to sit down. Eyes flicked between both beds. He wondered..which one was hers. In the end, he chose the one with the lavender sheets..and deposited the coat on the pillow as he sank down into the mattress. The coil springs twanged against his legs, poking into his right thigh. He could feel the breeze from the window now. It was warm..made his skin tingle. He stared at the blue sky beyond. The clouds were like cotton after he'd pulled it apart.

He wanted to know how she could live here..and in Rhy'Din at the same time..wondered if she ever got confused. He knew he would.. It was summer here, and winter there. That alone confused him.

It wasn't so much a big deal now..because she had been staying in Rhy'Din more. What if..she got in trouble..? Did her friends here..get mad at her when she was gone..? What about..when she was here.. Did she think about Rhy'Din at all? Did she..miss anyone..?

His head snapped back around as the door to the room flew open, banged into the wall..then slammed shut. He hadn't even made it to his feet before it opened again.

"Sheez, the doors in this place.. May~ MAY~?! Are you here yet?! Yooho-!!"

Toby stared at the girl in the doorway. She was dressed in some sort of uniform..that had a short skirt and black socks that stretched up almost to its hem. Her golden brown hair was gathered up in tiny pigtails above her ears..leaving most of it free and loose at her shoulders. Her right arm was curled, fingers holding the strap of a large leather bag. He watched her brown eyes get bigger and bigger..her mouth slowly start to drop open. It was..weird looking. He shuffled back.

"Oh. Em. Gee. May. What. The. Heck. Don't tell me that you ran into Shiho again.. Omigod, that little spaz turned you into a MAN, didn't she?! GASP!!" Toby blinked when she actually gasped, dropped her bag..and then ran him. "Don't you worry about a thing, Genki, we'll fix you, I promise!! You won't be a weird-but-a-little-hot-looking guy forever~!!"

"AH!"

"AAAAHHHH!!"

Toby backed away quickly until he felt the cool window against his back. He watched, as if in slow motion, the girl fly through the air at him, miss..and land with a thud that made his chest hurt just to listen to.

"Omigod, thank God!!" the girl shouted, her voice quivering with relief. When she lifted her face, she was smiling widely..her eyes were wet.

"What.."

"You didn't catch me and that, mon fr?re, means that you don't possess the kind heart or the gentle spirit that belongs to my best friend and therefore are just a simple minded half naked man in our room. Why are you in our room anyway? Why were you on my bed, why are you half naked and, most importantly, why haven't you helped me up yet?!"

Toby blinked at the girl, and the hand that she had thrust out at him. He wondered..why she hadn't just gotten up herself..especially if she had that much energy..

"I'm waiting, Big Guy. Jeez, you know if you have problems with these simple directions, how do you expect to get to second or third base?"

He reached out his own hand hesitantly and clasped his fingers around hers. He pulled her arm and she worked her legs under her, brushing and smoothing her skirt over her small thighs.

"Eyes front, Big Guy." He felt fingers under his chin, poking his head up. He peered at her curiously..dropped her hand. Her mouth pursed into a shiny bunch and she hummed. "You're a little dimwitted, aren't you? Well, that's okay!! Nothing to be ashamed of." She clapped one of her small hands on his shoulder. His head swiveled to look at it. "Honestly, you're not that bad to look at and wow, there's just no give here, is there?" she asked, her fingers trying to dig themselves into his skin. He grunted..shrugged under the touch until she had let go.

"Who are you..?" He wasn't sure if she would answer him or not, considering that he hadn't really-

"OH!! Pfft, well, because you seem a little slow, I'll assume that May told you aaaaall about me, and you just forgot~ You are looking upon the one, the only, ever party-goer Wakana Watanabe~!! In the flesh!!" He watched her twirl on her heel, curl a few fingers under her hair and flip it..and aim a peace sign right up in front of his nose. Although the speed at which she did it..made him reluctant to trust his eyes.

It was over before he knew it, and he found one of his hands captured in one of Wakana's. He tripped after her as she dragged him away from the window, his back burning as his skin pulled away from the glass. She led him to the small sitting area and shoved at his chest. He toppled back, legs catching on a couple beanbags and pillows, and he fell with a bone rattling thud. The black box on the low table jumped.

"SHH!! I didn't push you that hard!! We'll just add clumsy to your list of faults, but you're probably like that 'cause you haven't eaten anything!! I know these things, trust me!! May's last boyfriend was practically starving in more ways than one if you know what I mean!!" He didn't see her wink at him. He rolled to his side and sat up..shaking his head.

"I'm not..her boyfriend.."

"Ara!! You speak!!" He blinked. She..hadn't heard him talk before..? "Well alrighty then, if you're not her boyfriend, then who are you? I'm more inclined to not believe anything you say though, because you are weird, and half naked. Just a fair warning."

"Mmph.." He shook his head again..combed his fingers through his hair. If she wasn't going to believe him, then what use was there in talking..

"You know, you remind me of someone when you do that and it's kinda creepy. Like having a naked Tate right here in the flesh~ Not that I'd want that or anything, heheh!!"

Toby blinked..swiveled his head around to Wakana and locked eyes with her. "Tate.." He knew that name..

Wakana nodded frantically. Then smiled. It was really bright..and startled him a little.. She seemed to go through emotions..really fast..

"But you're not, so it's aaaaall good~" She gave him two thumbs up. "Seriously though, food. You have to be effing starving. And I won't have it said that I'm not a good hostess!! So you just sit right there," she shuffled towards him..bent down and pushed her thumb against something on the black box that clicked. Sound blasted from it in the form of screams and gunshots. Toby scooted back on the floor..staring at the box like it had just come to life. And it seemed..that one side of it had. People were running..yelling..

"Wow, you act like you haven't seen a TV before, Big Guy. Another fault. This bad list of yours is starting to get mighty long. If it doesn't shape up, we might not be able to fix you!!" Wakana kept pushing her thumb into the TV a few more times, then stood back..smiling. "Ahh, this is my favorite show!! You sit there and watch while I get lunch started, okay?

"Tell me something, Big Guy, do you know where May is?" she asked as she opened and closed several of the small cupboards in the kitchen..filled a large pot with water and put it on the stove. "I'm assuming that you came here with her 'cause the school's pretty darn secure."

Eyes flickered between the TV and Wakana. He figured it was safer to watch her. He noticed..that she'd taken off her shoes at some point.. He looked around..they were laying apart in the middle of the floor.

"Hey, Big Guy." He blinked, jerked his attention back to her. She was staring at him. The position of one of her eyebrows was almost comical. "You have a name, don't you?"

"Uh..Toby.."

"Very well, Toby, could you tell me why every single question I've asked you up until now has been met with silence, stares or the ever popular face of duuuuuh?"

"I.."

"Where's May?"

"I..don't know.." he said, shifting on his beanbag. He rubbed his palms over his bare arms. Wakana's face darkened. He found that..he didn't like it. Her features..were really expressive. And they looked better when she was smiling..which she hadn't stopped doing since she'd come into the room. Regardless of how many different twists and turns this conversation had taken.

"Well, she's here with you, right? You've seen her? She's okay?" Her rapid fire questions sounded a bit different..

He wasn't sure how to answer. He knew..that Mayu hadn't been anywhere near here. And that meant that Wakana..had no idea what happened to her.. It wasn't his place to say..mostly because he didn't know all the details.. And he didn't like thinking about it..

In the end, he nodded a couple of times..worked his face into what he hoped was a semblance of reassurance. "Yeah..she's okay.. She..told me to stay here and wait for her. And not to let anyone see me.." Which, he noticed, he'd failed to do.

Wakana had nodded her head to practically every syllable, stroking her chin in ways he'd seen bearded men do. "Alright, Toby, I see the problem. This is a top secret incognito operation!! You're safe with me until our captain returns!! The only other thing I need to ask is do you like beef, chicken or shrimp flavored soup?"

"Uh.."

"You've got until the count of three, otherwise I'm choosing for you."

"I.."

"One-"

"Um.."

"Two-"

"Beef."

"You got it, Big Guy~ Now just watch some TV and I'll have it done in a jiff!!" Wakana pointed at the black box..which had a picture of a crying girl on it now.. He blinked. It was better..than the gunshots. He wondered how they got that girl in there..

He gave Wakana's back a last look..then moved, slowly, back towards the table..to watch.

Wakana's and Hideo's players. Thanks guys!! ]

"Okay, see, now, that's Takeshi, who's in love with Mayumi, but he can't tell her that 'cause she's in love with his best friend," Wakana paused in her explanation and chopstick pointing to shovel several noodles into her waiting mouth and chomped them down. "Where was I? Oh. Takeshi who's in love with Mayumi who's in love with his best friend Ken who's dying of some sort of terminal disease or whatever. Takeshi, who's this really rich hotel heir is able to pay for his friend's treatments and Ken is all grateful for it and wants to pay him back when he gets well. And it tears at Takeshi since he's not doing it for Ken at all, but for Mayumi, 'cause he can't see her as torn up as she is right now.. and it sucks because she thinks he's doing it for Ken and keeps telling him that. Are you with me so far, Toby?"

He slurped on a pile of noodles as he looked at her, then at the TV..and shook his head.

"Ugh, another tally in your cons column. You have to learn how to pay attention!! Especially with things like this!! A girl's got to have her excitement and you have to learn how to keep up unless- Gasp, you make your own excitement, don't you, Toby? Oh, I knew it!! I knew those scars on your chest weren't just products of some self inflicted angst!!"

He looked down at himself. He was holding the bowl in front of him..he couldn't see his scars. Self inflicted. He'd stabbed himself..several times.

Wakana giggled and nudged his arm. "That has to be it!! You do kind of have that yanki stare going on. You're not in a gang are you? When May's with you, she's safe, isn't she?"

He stared at Wakana..dead in her eyes. She didn't..look away. She was one of the only people..that didn't. "You worry about her..don't you.." he asked, lowering the half empty bowl into his lap. Belatedly, he swiped his hand across his mouth and chin.

"What kind of question is that, of course I worry about her. She's my best friend, why wouldn't I? Why would you ask something so silly?"

He grinned, a little, and shook his head. He looked away from the skeptical expression she was giving him..stirred his noodles around with the chopsticks. He didn't want to eat any more..and hadn't really been hungry to begin with. He could still feel the soft pressure of her gaze on him.

"I..don't know.." he said finally. "Mayu..is my friend too.. I guess..I just wanted to ask." He shrugged..rested his chopsticks against the inside rim of the bowl.

"Hmm. I'll accept that, though I'm not going to just ignore you not answering my question and changing the subject. That's also very bad form."

"She safe..when she's with me," he said, nodding, his voice serious. He watched the light shining off of the slimy noodles in the bowl.

"Well alright then, that's good. You could have said that from the beginning, you know." Cheerful and pretty music started to play out of the TV..words scrolling from the bottom to the top of the screen. "Anyway, Toby, I'd love to sit and throw this banter back and forth with you, but I've got class. It's my last one of the day though, so I'm sure we'll see each other again~" Wakana smiled brightly at him and roughly tousled his hair, laughing as, he figured, it bounced right back into place. "That is if you stay here and don't try to meet up with any of your yanki friends. If May's around here like you said, I'm sure I'll catch her or she'll catch you.. or someone will catch someone. How long are you going to be staying with us, Big Guy?"

"I..don't know.." He'd wanted to say that he hoped not for long..but he wasn't sure. He figured it showed on his face, but that was fine. She was busy running back and forth across the floor and stomping her feet into her shoes.

"You don't know?" she asked, her voice a little strained. She came back into his line of sight with her bag over her shoulder again. She had..probably been picking it up when she asked him. "You don't know very much either, huh? But I guess it can't be helped. You're a man, after all." She thrust up her hand and waved it around in circles. "I'll see you later, Toby!! We're having Ishikari-nabe for dinner. So don't miss it, or I'll be upset~ Ja ne~" Wakana yanked the door open and flashed him another smile before she disappeared. The air in the room started to buzz with its new silence. He rubbed at the back of his neck as he turned around..set the large bowl on the table in front of him.

He wondered if it was a bad thing..that they had met. Mayu..didn't know that Wakana was going to be there. She wouldn't be upset..right..? Thinking back on it, he realized he should have told Wakana not to mention the fact that he was there..

Knocks on the door interrupted his train of thought and his head snapped around to stare at it. Wakana wouldn't..and Mayu lived here too.. If it was either one of them, they would have just come right in. It was..probably someone looking for them.. If he stayed quiet-

"I know you're in there, Toby. So why don't you just answer the door and pretend, just for a moment, that you're normal?"

Hideo's player. Thank you!! ]

Toby blinked..stared. He didn't..want to get up. But if they knew he was..

He was saved the trouble of doing so. His chest seized as the doorknob clicked..and a boy let himself into the room. He was small..thin. His blond hair was almost white and kept shifting in front of his eyes. The boy ran his hands over the door as he pushed it closed.

"You have to love Wakana. That Airhead never locks this door," he said, turning his head over his shoulder. Toby watched the wide neckline of his shirt slide down his arm. His skin was ghostly pale. "Oh come on now, Toby, you're going to make me blush," he whined softly, fiddling with his shirt in a way that Toby could only describe as coy. It..was weird..

"How..do you know my name.."

"And now we're getting down to business." The boy spun around and his heel squeaked against the wood floor..the plethora of chains littering his thin body gleamed as they caught the light. Toby watched them instead.. They were..shiny. His question didn't seem as important as it had been a minute ago..

"Hey." The boy snapped his fingers several times. Toby forced his eyes to jerk up to his face. "That's better. Now pay attention because I'll only go through this once." The boy closed the distance between them and leaned down, grabbing his chin and jaw in one of his hands. Toby grit his teeth and pulled back against it, but the boy held on with deceptive strength, the bones of his fingertips burrowing into his face. Their noses were brought level sharply and the chains around the boy's neck hit Toby in his chest.

"Are you listening?" the boy hissed into his face. His breath smelled like mint. Toby's gaze darted up to the only eye he could see: a matte teal one. It reminded him..of Mayu.. But her eyes weren't flat and cold..even if she couldn't see.. They weren't..dead.

He didn't say anything.

"I'll just take your silence as a yes. You don't mind if I do that, do you? Good. Because you don't have a choice.

"You consider yourself May's friend, don't you?"

Toby blinked..grunted. He wrapped his hand around the boy's wrist and squeezed, trying to pry the grip from his face. The boy's arm..was really small. His fingers overlapped.

He felt something sharp dig into the left side of his Adam's apple.. It was smaller than a knife..he hoped. Regardless, he couldn't risk moving anymore..

"Let go of me."

Toby did, reluctantly, finding it ironic that the boy would request that. He'd..grabbed him first. Toby didn't feel the prick of a blade now, though.. And the boy had loosened the hold on his chin.

"Now, I would very much like to do this like civilized individuals because I don't want to be here long and these are nice clothes. So perhaps I'll just skip right to my point.

"I am not your enemy, Toby. Nor am I May's." Toby nudged his chin down into the boy's hold, trying to follow his other hand as it dipped out of his periphory. "That being said, I could just as easily become that, do you understand me?"

"Don't threaten her.."

"Oooh, fiesty. I'm glad to see that rumor about redheads is true. But tell me Toby.. what exactly makes you think that I'm threatening her?"

"Mmph.." He didn't like..the boy's smile. It reminded him of a blade.

"And what makes you think I'm threatening you or anyone else you know..?"

"You're..not..?" Toby whispered, wishing he could put more into his tone than a waver.

"Very good. No Toby, I'm not. Consider this.. a friendly warning of sorts. A pleasant sharing of information, if you will," the boy said softly, drawing a thin silver chain from, presumably, his pocket. He jingled it beside Toby's face..trailing it across his cheekbone. He shook his head..closing one eye to the feeling. The boy's knife-like smile got wider.

"I want you to take this chain, and put that stupid healing vial of yours on it. I must say you're even dumber than you look by throwing away your last one."

Cold fear poured down Toby's neck and he grunted, shoved out at the boy's chest. The boy was quicker. Pain exploded between Toby's legs and in his stomach. The boy's fingernails raked along his jaw as he flew back, landing on the floor behind him..spine curved awkwardly. Through the stinging aches..the opaque sheen of moisture in his eyes, he registered a weight on his chest..the texture of denim. Small chains spilled over his sides. The boy had..sat on him, his small hand working into Toby's right pocket.

The vial..

He grunted, shifted under the boy's legs.

"Now, what did I just say about wanting to do this like civilized individuals? Though I'm not really regretting this portion of our time together." The boy heckled. Toby blinked..warm tears rolled from the corners of his eyes into his hair. He sucked down breath after breath. The pain..wasn't going away fast enough.

The boy leaned down, his hands slithering around Toby's neck. He felt the familiar weight of the vial on his breastbone from what seemed like far away.

"I am doing this for your own benefit," the boy whispered against the cuff of Toby's ear. Warm breath crawled all over his neck and made him jerk in shivers of protest. "Even if whatever was in this didn't help her eyes," Toby convulsed to the words. He didn't..like this. This boy knew things..that he shouldn't.. "It will help other injuries that might befall her."

"Wh-who..are you.. Why have you..been watching us.."

"Ahaha, you're not as dumb as you look. Able to finally put something together all by yourself, were you? It's too bad that you won't be rewarded." The boy leaned back, away from Toby's ear. The silver chains jingled against one another. He had..gotten up. Toby pressed one hand over the vial, complete with chain, on his chest. His other hand covered his eyes. He grunted weakly.

"Who I am is my own business. As for my reasons for watching you and your pathetic friends.. let's just say that it is in my best interest to. May is a classmate of mine, after all.

"However, you need only concern yourself with the fact that I am watching. And should you consider yourself a true friend of May, you will take that vial and keep it close at hand. But that's only if you fail in protecting her, which I sincerely hope you do not. Visits like these are boring to me, and I'd rather not have to do it again."

He couldn't see the boy walking away, but he heard the footsteps.. With each thud of a shoe, there was the music of chains. It too..reminded him of Mayu..and made him miss her jewelry. This boy's perpetual noise..was intimidating.. Like spurs on boots.

"Oh, and one last thing," the boy said, opening the door to the room. Relief swelled in Toby's chest. He was..leaving.. "I'm going to ask that you keep this conversation just between us. Don't forget, Toby.. I'll know if you don't."

He grunted when the door slammed shut, leaving him in the warm cotton-like silence..again. He didn't move for a while. The pain had subsided to something manageable, but he knew that moving his legs..wasn't smart. And the floor wasn't that uncomfortable..

He breathed long and slow..and forced his mind to stop turning in circles. There would be time..for that later.

For now..resting..wasn't that bad an idea..
