Lord Brutin

Brutin turned in his chair and looked out the window, the City Clerk continued to glare at him. "I cannot fathom how this atrocity has been allowed to continue, quite frankly, innocent citizens murdered in the city and their deaths claimed in the offices of the Oracle. And yet the City has done nothing about it." Brutin finished and turned to look at the Chief Magistrate who sat beside the City Clerk.

The Magistrate was angry and made no show of trying to cover it. "Those innocent victims you speak of are slavers!" the man spat, making a point to spit in Brutin's direction, yet having enough sense not to hit him. Brutin confirmed he had not been sullied and then sighed.

"I also heard two city guards were found murdered as well." He said casually and the Magistrate stiffened visibly. "Such a shame that trained swordsmen would fall on their swords like that." He remarked off handedly as his eyes roved back to the Magistrate's.

"The manner of their death was not made public." The Magistrate shot back and Brutin shrugged.

"It is hard to keep a decapitation secret." Brutin replied and the Magistrate glared at him.

"Amazing to think that a man 'falling on his sword' could manage to decapitate himself." The Magistrate shot back and Brutin shrugged.

"I would not lament their loss my good man, they were not doing anything anyway." The City Clerk gasped and the Magistrate hissed through gritted teeth as Brutin locked eyes with him. "After all, had they been upholding the law and seeking murderers perhaps they would not have been distracted and tripped." Brutin said calmly and evenly.

"They were murdered just as sure as those filthy Slavers had been murdered!" The Magistrate made ready to spit again and Brutin came out of his wandering thoughts to glance at him, the man's anger was going to make him a mistake soon enough. "Why should I investigate the murders of scum when my own men have been murdered and the city would be safer with their murderers dealt with." The Magistrate nearly shouted.

"tsk tsk, manners my good man." Brutin cautioned him calmly. "Let me say this then, you have known murderers and unknown murderers, the killing continues. Perhaps if you investigated what you did know and could do something about then you would have one less murderer on your hands. Perhaps even two...." Brutin allowed the words to trail off icily.

The Magistrate stiffened visibly and the City Clerk looked at him in wonder. "Are you saying...." The Magistrate began but Brutin put his hand up in the air to silence him.

"Do not speak of such things. Just assume that if you did your job and brought this group Nyte blah blah blah to justice I would be obliged to you. I would perhaps even have reason to launch my own investigation into the deaths of your own guards and help see justice done. I am after all a law abiding citizen of RhyDin now and would simply love to do my part." Brutin let the overly honeyed words show his contempt and added a smile for good measure.

"You are blackmailing me!" The Magistrate shouted and Brutin frowned and glared at him.

"For telling you to do your job?" He snapped back and then composed himself. Letting out a breath to calm himself he got down to business, checking for dirt under his fingernails. "At present time there are approximately fifty guards set in pairs around the city on patrol. There are anywhere from 100 feet to one half mile of space between them at any one time and they have no means of communicating with each other in the field." Brutin said and then fell silent as he looked up at the Magistrate for his dramatic effect.

"I certainly hope that no others trip."
