Brutin started away with a gasp and sat up, sweat gleaming on his brow. Softly Cookie moaned in her sleep, having caught up his dreams and transferring them to her own. She lay with Lyria and Nadine in a pile next to him but it was Nadine that watched him with a concerned look on his face. He was not about to let this nights events bother him, he had been busy dealing with business and had not been there until it was almost too late.
Tara had almost committed suicide.
He had put all of his energies into keeping his people safe and always had but there was one force he could not protect them from, themselves. Nadine sidled up to him and lay against him, her body warm and comforting and he felt the drowsing overcome him again, despite knowing it would bring more bitter nightmares.
He fought himself against the need for sleep and got out of bed, his sweat covered nude form standing in the open window taking in the moon. He heard Nadine pad up beside him but at first she said nothing, giving him time to collect his thoughts.
"She traded her soul for immortality to be with me forever. Now she finds herself besotted and ready to die for him." He said and still she said nothing in reply. "I sometimes have stood at my window and wondered what my life and this Association would be like without her. I laugh at the ludicrous prospect and move on to important things. Perhaps it is not so ludicrous, perhaps one day she will not be there when the sun sets."
He kept looking out the window but this was his bedroom, not his office, he could not assuage himself here as he could there, it just was not the same thing. It was one thing to have one you cherished die in combat or be lost to disaster, you may rave at whatever gods you worship but in the end life returns to you, but when that cherished person takes their own life you sit all the longer figuring out why.
