Blood pounded in Andy?s ears as an urgent, internal drumbeat. Faster, it called, faster still. Her lungs ached from the cold and the exertion but as much as she wanted to take deep gulping breaths through her mouth, she forced herself to control the rhythm -- in through her nose, out evenly through pursed lips. Her lungs tried to tell her it wasn?t enough oxygen, she reassured them it was.

Her sneakers pounded across uneven ground, fallen limbs, and underbrush along the hardly visible path. The ground had to be carefully watched and the undercoating of wet dead leaves had to be avoided the best she was able for fear of losing her footing on their slippery surface. Big towering old trees surrounded her for as far as she could see in any direction. The trees were now bare of their leaves with only the occasional pine or holly grove to break up the grays and browns of a barren forest. She spilled out down on an embankment into lower ground into several inches of wet ground.

The water hadn?t been noticed until it was too late to see it. In spring when the snow melted in the mountains, it would be a cheerful creek babbling towards the lake but this time of year it was standing water thick with the heady smell of the decomposing leaves that lay beneath it. Freezing water sopped in through the fabric of her sneakers, soaking her socks and wrapping its icy fingers around her toes. The only thing now she could do was push forward. The mud beneath the layer of water made it more difficult to gain traction. Exhausted, her legs resisted but she funnelled more energy into the muscles of her calves and thighs to power her way through the muddy valley into the gentle rise of the embankment on the other side.

An old wooden structure suddenly loomed before her, hidden by the trees until she was almost on top of it. Decades earlier it had probably been a well-used deer stand. Now, though, it had fallen into such a state of disrepair as to make climbing it a prospect that even Andy would find far too dangerous.

Chase Rhovnik, her pit bull of a cousin with his broad shoulders and dark expressions, stood at its base with a clipboard in one hand and his wrist turned over to keep an eye on the watch counting off every second. Her shoes thudded past a line drawn in the dirt and he called out her time. ?58.54. You?re thirty seconds slower than you were four months ago.?

A defense for herself tried to work its way out of her throat. Seriously? The ground was much softer than it had been in August and there were no fallen leaves to create a slippery overcoat. But she was far too out of breath to gather a sharp retort. Her feet slowed her pace and she came to a stop a handful of feet away while Chase jotted down her time on the little line beside her name before returning his eyes to his watch.

She was first across that line. The fact would thrill her if Chase hadn?t soured it by reminding her that she wasn?t good as she had been previously. He was wrong. She was as good. She was better. The last couple months had made her stronger. Running with Ford as often as she did in the mornings had made her faster. He pushed her, he challenged her.

Great gulps of breath were taken in through her nose and blown out through pursed lips as she raised her arms on top of her head, clasping her hands together as she tried to regain control of her breathing.

Stefan came next, sprinting up the last embankment with long, powerful strides that ate up the ground. Chase frowned over his watch as he read out the numbers. ?59.23. Almost a full two minutes slower than you were four months ago and you got beat by Andy.?

Angry green eyes settled on Andy as Stefan hunched over, setting his hands on his knees as he tried to regain control of his breathing. She turned her back to the look, not interested in his indignation.

?Because she is a ****ing cheater. She took my legs out from under me a mile back,? Stefan accused breathlessly.

Andy forced her voice to sound more gathered than Stefan?s as she turned back towards him. ?Don?t be such a sore loser, Stefan. It makes you even uglier.?

Stefan huffed out a laugh, stalking towards her to eliminate the distance between them. His voice was a low growl as he invaded her space intimidatingly. ?You are ridiculous. Do you know why they made you finish college long distance? Because you?re not worth an education. All you girls are worth is using your cleavage to get dumb men to spill state secrets and making babies to continue the line. You thinking that you?re some sort of field divisional leader is a joke. Get out of my way and stay out of it.?

It was a challenge that she couldn?t back down from even though there was no way it would end well for her. Stefan had more than a half a foot on her and she didn?t even want to consider the weight difference. They were both exhausted from the morning run but that was her specialty. A fist fight would be trampling in on his. She would get in some good blows but he could beat her to a bloody pulp.

She didn?t even allow a moment of silence, not a second to make it seem like she was considering her course of action. He was too close to punch but as soon as his growl came to a close, she shoved him violently away from her. A root caused him to stumble back a step with the push and the back of his head hit one of the legs of the deer stand. There was no shock or surprise that she fought back. He was expecting it. He immediately took a swing, landing a punch against her bottom lip.

Chase was quick to drop the clipboard, reaching to grab both of Stefan?s arms and haul him away from Andy. Stefan put up a fight but Chase, having not run the last hour as they had, had much more energy to peel Stefan away from the fray. Even as the pain to her lip registered and Andy lunged forward after Chase and Stefan, Jakob ran up past the line in the dirt and immediately went to grab for Andy. Jakob didn?t need an explanation of what he was running up on. It had happened often enough in the past. He reached out a big mitt, wrapping his hand around the back collar of Andy?s thermal vest and pulling her much smaller form away from the fray.

?The two of you knock it off!? Chase yelled, disrupting what had been a quiet morning further. Stefan ripped free of Chase to straighten his coat with a dark expression.

Andy?s blood boiled red hot. There were more footsteps approaching but they were ignored. She could think of nothing but the cousin standing in front of her. ?How ****ing dare you! My team and I work just as difficult jobs. Probably more difficult. Say it again and I will rip your throat out!?

?You and Kat are worthless as divisional leaders and you should go get married and have babies so the rest of us can concentrate on work. The only missions the two of you accomplish are pulled off by Jim and Rhett,? Stefan accused with a cruel twist of a grin.

?Enough!? Chase interrupted again after bending down to pick his clipboard out of the mud. ?Andy, grow up. Stop caring so much about what Stefan thinks. And, Stefan, shut the **** up or I?m going to have Jakob let her go. Maybe you?ll pound her into the ground but I bet she damages your pretty little face first. That model you?ve been screwing will dump your dumb *** like a hot potato.?

Andy forced the fight free of her posture and Jakob released his hold on her accordingly. She turned on her heels to walk off with a shake of her head as if dismissing the confrontation, sucking on her bottom lip that already felt thick to confirm the metallic hint of blood. The dismissal was an act, though. The confrontation would not be forgotten. Stefan?s words thudded through her head as a new drumbeat for her heart to set its rhythm.

It was a cunning, hateful rhythm and before the year was through she was determined to shove it right up his ***.

File Number: 332C79980
Contracted date: December 1, 2013
Client: The Royal Family of Northern Teifer

Contracted purpose: To confirm and destroy any existing Northern Teifer weapon stocks in the hands of the rebel group, the Rolanaugts, and secure the border between Northern Teifer and Foarlin.

Memo To All Divisional Leaders:

After the recent AR divisional mission within Norther Teifer proving that the King?s brother has been selling weapons to the Foralin rebel group, the Rolanaugts, the King of N.T. has contracted Rhovnik Enterprises to seek and destroy any remaining weapons stores before the Foralins discover the degree of the involvement of the King?s brother, Prince Holimond. The fear of Rhovnik Enterprises and the Royal Family of N.T. is that if the Prince?s involvement is discovered, the support of the rebels will be seen as an act of war by the Foralins.

Intel is arriving daily from the ground suggesting that there is a stockpile of Northern Teifer weapons in a Rolanaugt encampment seven clicks north of the Foralin village of Oakhurst. Accompanied with this memo is the complete file to be reviewed. The board of directors is requesting submissions on destroying the weapons depot without alerting the Foralins the the fact weapons are Northern Teifer in origin.

Mission submissions are requested no later than December 21 by 5:00 PM.

South of the river in the Old Temple District, Rhovnik Enterprises? RhyDin hub was situated in a three story red brick building that spanned half a block which had once housed a textile mill. Renovations had been made, of course. Security measures were added, offices created where work stations once stood, and what had been a simple basement was expanded to create as much square footage below ground as there was above.

Yet, Andy could still feel the ghosts of industry all around her as she sat in Chase?s office, waiting for her cousin to arrive for the appointment he demanded. ?Chase Rhovnik, Vice President of Field Operations?, read the shiny silver sign on his open door. She rolled her eyes back to his desk where her proposal for the Northern Teifer job sat prominently in the center of his desk.

That proposal was clearly the point of this meeting. Whether he loved it or hated it was still up in the air. However, she was leaning towards the latter.

The question was answered when the pit bull himself stalked into the room, snapping immediately and causing her to rise from her chair to her feet. It was more out of a subconscious desire to meet her attacker on her feet than a show of respect.

?This proposal is criminally stupid and suicidally reckless,? Chase began.

As Chase dropped to a seat in the chair behind his desk, Andy lowered herself to a lazy sprawl in the leather chair opposite of it. The corners of her lips curled upward in a smug smile she didn?t quite feel. ?I prefer bold and daring to stupid and reckless.?

?Stupid and reckless,? Chase repeated, lifting his eyes from the proposal before him back to his younger cousin. ?You are proposing that a team of two or three infiltrates a rebel weapons depot, plants an incendiary device, and then somehow escapes without getting blown up and without getting caught by either the Rolanaugts or the Foralins.?

?Oh, and I suppose Stefan and Iva?s option of a strike team going in there with guns blazing is a much better way to keep a low profile? I?m sure the Foralins won?t suspect anything there,? Andy?s tone was heavy with sarcasm as she reached up to flip a lock of hair away from her eyes and back over her shoulder. ?In my plan, the Foralins? intelligence agency will chalk up the destruction of the weapons depot to an internal struggle within the rebel group itself. There are already rumors that the Rolanaugt commanders -- Daru Shunnan and Maeran Iolano -- have been jostling for the title of ?Supreme Commander? with the Foralins? capture of Nesuu. This is one of Shunnan?s outposts. Not only will the Foralins think that Iolano destroyed this outpost but Shunnan will probably think he did as well. My plan not only destroys the weapons and keeps quiet the Northern Teifer involvement, it increases the instability within the Rolanaugts.?

Chase huffed out an exhale, shaking his head at her as if she simply wasn?t getting his point. He repeated that point once again. ?Which makes it no less stupid or reckless. I?m submitting the other options but I?m holding yours back. If your father saw this, his head would explode.?

?Fine,? Andy replied briskly as she rose to her feet. ?Is that all? I?ve got actual work to get back to.?

There were times when Chase Rhovnik knew it best not to respond. This was one of them. Her frustration bordered on insubordination but it was best to pretend it didn?t happen rather than poking her with a stick. Therefore, he simply nodded before returning his eyes to his computer.

Andy?s eyes narrowed in a slight glare before she whipped around on her heels to head out of his office. The ?Chase Rhovnik? sign rattled with the door in her wake upon being slammed shut.

Katharine Rhovnik

December 29, 2013. 21:16 local time.

The New Haven architecture was only slightly less of a hodge podge than the rest of RhyDin landscape with the difference being that New Haven was almost entirely wealthy. There were great estates and beautiful high rises. There were efficient but lavish brownstones and well-manicured gated communities. Katharine Rhovnik chose to live several blocks from the best shops in a townhouse that was reminiscent of the coziness and exclusiveness of London's Notting Hill neighborhood.

A stately but not overly ornate pair of columns led to a small but open porch. The interior had been remodeled several years before she had moved in leaving a more modern semi-open floor plan. It was a home built for coziness and with the Christmas decorations still in place, the lights dimmed low, and Dean Martin crooning in the background about his sweetheart, Kat's guard for the night, Tony Goodman, was in good spirits.

Tony was only on his second solo night of watching the house. But how difficult could it be? He had been training for this for months and had years of Mologian military experience under his belt. This charge didn?t seem particularly difficult. She was sitting in a fluffy robe with her dark hair about her shoulders singing along with the music and her even sillier cousin, Andy, who had a room in the town-home was off in the kitchen making hot chocolate.

It was going to be an easy night, he decided. Rhett would later point out to him that should have been his first sign that something was amiss.

"Well," Tony stated as he set his hands on the armchair to rise to his feet. "I am going to go sit in the car out front and watch the security feed from my laptop."

Turning to Tony, Kat smiled at him sweetly. "It's kind of cold to go out there right now. Why don't you stay? Andy is making hot chocolate and it's the best, I swear. You will love it." Kat was already standing up to call to the kitchen, not giving Tony a real choice in the matter. "Andy, make sure there is enough for Tony to have some."

"You want to set up the chessboard?" that was back to her guard who had many times through his training kept her company by playing board games with her. Tony huffed out a laugh at not being given a choice in the matter and moved to collect the chessboard.

"Of course there's enough and of course he's staying for some!" Andy's singsong call came as she rounded the corner with a tray in her hands. Her high ponytail bounced cheerfully along with her step as she moved to set the tray down on the coffee table.

Gleefully, Kat clapped her hands together and bounced back down on to the couch, crossing her legs beneath her as she sat. "Tony, have we ever told you that you are the best guard?" she was still wearing that sweet smile as she leaned forward to take a mug, looking to Andy with a raised eyebrow as she pointed to the mug opposite of the one she was taking.

There was a subtle nod of Andy's head to Kat as she took a mug of her own and then stretched out the one Kat had been pointing to as Tony moved to the coffee table to set down the chessboard.

"Yes, yes. Well, let's just not tell Rhett, okay?" He sat back down in his chair, taking a careful sip from the mug in hand to check the temperature of the mug. It wasn't scalding hot. It was warm enough, though, to warm his belly almost as nicely as a glass of whiskey would. "What are you two ladies doing for New Years Eve?"

"My boyfriend and his brother -- not Rhett, the other one -- always have a party. They're doing it at my boyfriend's house this year. I'm sure I'll probably end up there," Andy responded cheerfully as she settled back down beside Kat with her own mug of hot chocolate.

Looking to Andy, Kat nodded along. "It'll be fun, I think. Thanksgiving went pretty well, so I'm sure we'll all have a fun time together. We should go shopping for dresses, Andy. Do you think a sparkly dress is overdone for New Years? Kind of cliche, hm?"

"Kat, this is not a fancy party. Seriously. It's being thrown by Ford and Colt. There's going to be lots of beer and bonfires and fireworks and probably that ridiculous corn-hole game. You are not wearing a dress." Andy rolled her eyes with an aggrieved sigh.

Tony loved the girls' banter. It reminded him much of his sisters. He settled back in his chair with the board only half set up, watching the pair of them over the lip of his mug with a distantly amused smile.

"Right. I knew that." she pursed her lips and tried to think of what else she could wear. "I guess skinny jeans will have to do. Just promise me, Andy, no cargo pants? Let me dress you up a little? Everyone needs a little pizzazz on New Years! Right Tony?" Kat?s attention was turned on Tony as she lifted her mug for a sip of cocoa to hide her growing smile at her cousin?s likely annoyance.

"Kat doesn't think that I, on my own, am enough to keep Ford Daniels interested in me," Andy hummed with a lift of her brows before swallowing a sip of hot chocolate. ?I evidently need pizzazz.?

"I doubt she thinks that because it doesn't sound likely but pizzazz can be fun." This sounded like a dangerous conversation to tread into and the hot chocolate was very good so Tony left his answer at just that. He drowned anything further with a long swallow from the mug.

"Oh pft. Rhovnik women definitely do not need pretty dresses to keep a man interested. I just like dressing you up." The statement was punctuated with another sip of her cocoa. "Besides, I know Ford adores you no matter what you wear. I think he's totally one hundred percent smitten." Kat giggled softly, thinking that the word smitten was far too fluffy and cute to be applied to any Daniels man.

Tony gave a couple nods, slow and steady. His eyelids felt heavy. Very, very heavy. The room was warm, the company spirited. All he wanted to do was close his eyes and fall asleep.

Andy's features screwed up in distaste at her choice of words. Just as Kat clearly knew they would. "Ford doesn't adore me and he isn't smitten. You're ridiculous. How much longer does Rhett have until he has to decide whether or not he wants to marry you?"

Kat eyes shifted to Andy after looking at Tony for a long moment. "Rhett can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants. He's the best man I've ever known and I'm not going to pressure him into anything. And you are still either in denial or insane when it comes to Ford." She was back to grinning at her cousin.

"Wasn't Chase's deal six months for Rhett to decide to marry you or walk away? And that was... wow. Almost three months ago. Funny how time just tick, tick, ticks away." Andy began humming the wedding march under her breath while lifting a hand from the mug to examine the gray nail polish on her hand.

Tony's eyes sank shut but his head remained upright. The girls' voices were a quiet, soothing hum in his head.

"No one, including Chase is going to tell me or Rhett to get married or not, or when. If and when it happens, it happens. Besides, I am pretty sure those were not exactly Chase's words," Kat replied as Andy teased further on the subject.

She would toss a throw pillow at Andy, but she didn't want her to spill the cocoa. Instead, to nip the conversation in the bud, Kat looked over at Tony. She found she had to hold back a laugh. "Poor guy." he was probably too far gone to realize Kat was talking about him.

Kat?s ruse worked as Andy?s eyes followed Kat's over to Tony, watching for a moment as his head started to droop towards the side. He was sinking deeper and deeper into the chair's inviting cushions. "Mm. He doesn't know the five-letter word that's going to hit him when he comes to," Andy whispered softly. ?R-H-E-T-T.?

"Poor guy. Don't you feel a little guilty? I do." she frowned as she watched Tony sinking and finally his head started to lower until...thunk. Kat sat down her mug and then stood up to throw off her robe. "Let's do this before I chicken out. I don't want that five letter word catching us before we're out of here!"

"No. I don't. Seriously, if he fell for that act, he deserves to be fired. Think of it more as a test.... and he failed. In a big way," Andy stated as she rose from the couch to pull free the belt on her own robe, revealing black yoga pants and a black long sleeve tee beneath. "Grab our gear bags, would you? I'm going to leave a note for the five letter word."

"You know... so he doesn't worry," Andy added with a mischievous grin.

Kat?s eyes lingered on the sleeping man for another moment with a slight frown. She liked Tony. Hopefully the five letter word didn't go too hard on him? but they had to get moving. Kat gave a nod. "Bags. I'm on it. And you know that note is not going to do anything but serve to amuse you because Rhett will not buy it for one second."

But Andy's amusement was paramount in her opinion so as the girls left, a small card was left on the entry table in their wake.
