Ben Sullivan

http://i48.tinypic.com/2rrq88m.jpg

Name: Ben Sullivan
Birthdate: November 3, 1963
Age: Fifty-two
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 180
Hair: Blond
Eyes: Blue -- depending on the lighting, can be rather vivid or washed out to a pale almost grey, but typically somewhere in between.

Parents: Alice Sullivan, mother. Died seven years ago. She always told Ben that his father died before he was born, and he's never checked into that, even though she never told him so much as his name. His step-father, Roland Miller, died shortly after Alice did.

Siblings: None

Relationship: Married to Jackie Lee Sullivan. Has an ex-wife, Ella, back in Vancouver.

Children: One son with Ella, Adam, fifteen years old. Three children with Jackie: his only daughter, Lillian Lavande, usually Lily, almost two years old, and twin boys, Hunter Hill and Knox Parker, one year olds.

Occupation: Back home, he was a senior Detective in Vancouver's Homicide unit. Here in Rhy'Din, those skills are being put to work here in Ben's private detective agency, Sullivan and Associates.

Personality: Typically: extroverted on the surface, but guarded when it comes to his personal life. Will start sh*t with somebody with just a word or two. Can come off as aloof or insensitive. Good sense of humor, if on the sarcastic side. Can be obsessive, single-minded. Not always sympathetic to others, but makes an extremely loyal friend. Can be impulsive. Good intuition, usually. Prone to brooding, but if it's pointed out to him, he typically shakes it off (or appears to, outwardly). Occasionally has extreme ... mood swings? Sometimes the life of the party, absolutely wild. Sometimes a little bit violent madman. Sometimes sharp-tongued and calculating, ruthless.

Talents & Abilities: Phenomenal shot. Good to have in a fist fight; dabbled in boxing when he was younger. Cool headed in a tight jam. Excellent at reading people, figuring out what makes someone tick.

Brief Bio: Ben's tried to distance himself from his early life as best he can; it wasn't a happy childhood. His father died young (or so he's been told), his mother remarried quickly, and Ben's stepfather was not kind to him. Between the ages of ten and eleven, Ben was missing from his family. After being found, he was put into foster care and joined the military as soon as he could, serving in the Canadian Forces for five years before joining the Vancouver PD. Married around that time. His son, Adam, was born when Ben was thirty-six. Like father like son, Adam went missing for two years, between the ages of eight and ten. His marriage crumbled -- his wife turned back to heroin and filed for divorce a month or so before Adam was found, alive and well. Ben was willing to give in on any issue except custody -- each wanted sole custody -- but after coming to Rhydin and being, for whatever reason, unable to return home, Ben agreed not to fight that any longer either. However, after months spent writing each other letters, Adam decided to hitchhike to Georgia (where he thought he might be able to find his father), and while he failed in getting there, he did, with Jackie's help, end up reunited with Ben in Rhydin.

Additional Info:

** Has a tattoo of the Champion Sparkplug logo on his right upper arm. It's not really because he's a car fan (though he likes them alright) -- it's an homage to painter Stuart Davis.

** Ben has Dissociative Identity Disorder (formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder), stemming from the horrific abuse suffered at the hands of his step-father. This isn't something he talks about. He barely remembers any of the abuse, and he's only just really started grappling with the disorder, as he stopped going to his therapist in Vancouver before really getting a diagnosis. He experiences the emergence of another personality like a blackout; all time spent with another personality in control is lost time to Ben. They appear as responses to stress or certain situations or emotions, or sometimes to very specific environmental triggers (specific sounds, objects, observations). Most of his coworkers/friends at home have learned to just brush these off as 'mood swings' or don't really press him on his erratic behavior, because Ben tends to deflect with humor or just shrug those instances off.

** Ben can't/won't use portal/Nexus travel. He'll say he just doesn't trust it, but he's actually been strongly cautioned against it by local mages because of his disorder. He's tried twice since coming to Rhydin. Once failed miserably (spitting him right back out and resulting in a nasty internal run-in with one of his alters), and while the second time was successful (traveling with Jackie to Georgia for Christmas), he likely will not try again, as that was only after his alters had quieted for nearly a month -- and that doesn't seem likely to happen again any time soon.

Jackie Sullivan

Date: 2013-01-13 02:44 EST
http://i46.tinypic.com/2vty594.jpg

Name: Jackie Lee Sullivan.
Birthdate: September 7th, 1989
Age: Twenty-five
Race: Human
Sex: Female
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 110lbs
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Dark brown

Parents: Lula Anne and Beau Elliot.
Siblings: The baby sister of three older brothers.
Relationship: Previously divorced. Currently married to Ben Sullivan since April 27th, 2013.

Occupation: While previously a bartender throughout majority of her working years, Jackie has become employed as a secretary at Sullivan & Associates detective agency by her husband, Ben Sullivan. Her day revolves around answering phones, filing, scheduling Ben's day, corresponding with Richard Kensington, and dealing with any other needs that arise in the office so Ben can focus more on his cases and field work.

Personality: When it comes to Jackie, outgoing is an understatement. She will talk to anyone about pretty much anything, to a flaw. She is extremely friendly and has no problem making acquaintances. The only time to watch out is when you make her mad. She will turn into a hissing cat at the drop of a hat and isn't above throwing a few punches at whoever she feels deserves them. She will defend herself, but more importantly she will defend those she cares about with all she's got. She enjoys anything that has to do with being outdoors. Muddin', riding on four wheelers, even laying out in the hammock are all just fine with her.

Talents & Abilities: Just like any bartender to the bone, Jackie prides herself on being able to pass out sage advice to all who come looking for it. She also has the sort of skills any sort of country girl needs. She can fish, hunt, shoot a gun or bow, camp, build a fire, use a knife, find her way around the woods, ride a horse, and even tinker around under the hood of a car.

Strengths: Loyal and stupidly brave, Jackie is a good person to have backing you in your corner. When she finds someone that she likes as a friend, which is just about everyone, she will stop at nothing to entertain, protect, and help them.

Faults: As much as Jackie loves passing out advice to others, she often admits that she can't help herself worth a damn. She can look at the problems of others, decide what needs to be done, and give them a plan of action. When it comes to her own issues she's absolutely lost and often left stumbling around in the dark. Jackie is also horribly head strong and will continue doing something wrong, no matter how many times people try to help her, until she figures it out for herself.

Brief Bio: Jackie has always been tight with her family. She loves them all dearly and is proud of all the quirks in her kinfolk. But while most of them are happy to grow-up, live, and die in Thomaston, Georgia, Jackie always felt that wasn't the way for her. During the rare occasions when outsiders would come into the bar she worked in Thomaston, she would latch onto these new people and try to get as much information from them as possible. Where were they from? What was it like? Where else had they gone? What was life outside of Georgia?

Finally, Jackie got it in her head to leave. She told everyone she was heading out, set on hitchhiking across the country. Most of her family members didn't give this much weight though. Jackie was always the type of girl growing up who said she was running away forever, but would only hide out in the shed until it was dinner time. But she stuck with it, packed a bag, and found herself an 18-wheeler to catch a ride in with some unknown old man.

Ever trusting and tired from the excitement, after a few hours in the big rig Jackie fell asleep. When she awoke the 18-wheeler was parked in RhyDin with the engine off and no keys to be found. The old man was missing, too. It took her a while to get her bearings in RhyDin, but she eventually managed since she had no idea how to get home.

Since then Jackie is well aware of a portal that easily leads from Thomaston to RhyDin, but even with a way back to Georgia Jackie has never been in much of a hurry to leave. Jackie has gone on to establish a solid life for herself in RhyDin and while she visits her Mama and Daddy regularly in Georgia, these days she's in the habit of calling RhyDin her home.

List Additional Information:
* In High School Jackie's brothers were big on participating in sports. Jackie decided that she would show her school spirit by becoming a cheerleader. She only managed to last for one practice. When the head cheerleader started telling Jackie what to do and, in Jackie's opinion, got an attitude, Jackie went off and took a swing for the girl. Since then Jackie was banned from all extracurricular activities.

* Jackie currently attends pole dancing classes. Unfortunately, Jackie rarely leaves a class without an injury. She's not the most graceful student, but she says she's the best at whipping her hair around.

* Her favorite guilty pleasure movie is The Notebook. Jackie has seen it too many times to count and knows all the words by heart. While some people are fully aware of this, she tries to keep it as low key as possible.

* On their second first date, Ben gifted Jackie with a silver charm bracelet that had a little silver bird charm on it. Since then he has been steadily giving her charms to mark important occasions in their relationship. Jackie's bracelet is complete and contains the following charms:

Bird: For Jackie's love of her secret guilty pleasure movie, The Notebook.
Cowboy Boot: For Halloween 2012 when Ben dressed like a cowboy.
Knitting Needles: Jackie knit Ben a scarf for his 49th birthday.
British Columbia: The first time Jackie flew was to Canada to see Adam.
Gun: For the times Jackie and Ben go to the gun range.
Peach: One of Ben's nickname for Jackie is Peaches.
Cherries: Ben and Jackie tied cherry stems with their tongues the first time they met.
Penguin: Jackie constantly complains about the lack of penguins in Canada.
Ice Skate: Because Ben taught Jackie to ice skate winter 2012.
Plane: Jackie flew to Portland, OR to get Adam and bring him to RhyDin to reunite him with Ben.
Stripper Heel: For Valentine's 2013 when Jackie showed Ben her pole dancing skills as a gift.
Heart: For the first time Jackie and Ben said they loved each other.
Cross: A constant reminder to Jackie and a source of strength.
Locket: Reserved for pictures of Jackie and Ben's future children.
Angel Wings: Because Ben insists Jackie has helped save him. Also because she has to be an angel to put up with him.
Cellphone: RIP Jackie's old beast of a phone that she accidentally knocked into the toilet while doing her hair. Ben declared the phone to be dead and bought her a new one along with this charm to commemorate the old one. In addition to that, texting has always been big with the pair and some of their best moments have involved cellphone screens between them.
Ring: For when Ben proposed to Jackie April 9th, 2013

Adam Sullivan

Date: 2013-01-13 03:01 EST
Name: Adam Joseph Sullivan
Birthdate: September 1st, 2000
Age: Fifteen
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Height: 5'02"
Weight: 100lbs
Hair: Dark blond
Eyes: Bright blue - exactly like his father's.

Parents: Ben and Ella Sullivan. Jackie is his stepmother (and his friends hate him for it).
Siblings: A half sister, Lily, and half brothers, Hunter and Knox.

Occupation: Student! Freshman in high school, in accelerated english, history, and composition classes. Not so great at math. Really enjoys art classes, especially painting, but he's taking drawing as well.

Personality: Adam is typically very shy around those he doesn't know well. He was more outgoing when he was younger (and actually used to sometimes get in trouble for being a smartmouth!), but ever since going missing, he's become much more reserved most of the time. He does open up in front of people he knows well. Extremely bright, mature for his age, he's easy to get along with, both kids his age and most adults, as long as he's not pushed too quickly into being social and allowed to open up at his own pace. He's sort of lapsing into typical teenage angst, though, and usually butts heads with his father rather than Jackie (whom he might trust more than he trusts Ben, sometimes).

Talents & Abilities: Very bright. Great at soccer, has been playing since five years old. Has played in little league baseball for a couple of years as well. Talented in painting, just starting to dabble in pencil sketches, too.

Strengths: Quick to figure out situations, even if people try to not be completely forthcoming about them because of his age. Very patient. Understanding of the situations of others when he chooses to be. Annoyingly good at Uno and most party games. Level-headed.

Faults: Can be stubborn. Will sometimes do things he shouldn't, because he's had to grow up quickly in some respects, and doesn't always understand that that doesn't mean he's an adult. Forgiving, sometimes to a fault. Adam's also just getting to the age of being a sullen, backtalking, dramatic teenager, though so far, he's not too unbearable. Often tries to take on too much responsibility, especially when his father is concerned, but even his friends and the rest of his family, sometimes to the point of it being detrimental to his own emotional health.

Brief Bio: Adam had a relatively normal childhood until the age of eight. He grew up an only child in a loving family with parents that weren't overinvolved but still encouraged him to do things he loved - mostly soccer, but art, too. Shortly after turning eight, his father took him, frantic, to a secluded home several miles away from the city, insisting that he'd come back when it was safe and that Adam needed to stay there with Carol, the owner of the property. It was two years before Adam saw Ben again. During those two years, Ben and Ella had separated and filed for divorce, and Ella had primary custody of Adam, even though the stress of Adam's disappearance (and the reappearance of Ben's alters) caused her to turn back to heroin, and the trauma of losing Adam meant she was often extremely overprotective.

Ben still saw Adam often, though Ella was doing her best in the divorce proceedings to get sole physical and legal custody of their son. The divorce still hadn't been finalized a year and a half later when Ben disappeared without warning, ending up in Rhydin with no way to travel back to Vancouver. Things got worse between Adam and Ella during this time, to the point of Adam running away from home to try to find Ben (or Jackie, who could take him to Ben) on his own. Ella's attempted suicide after finding Adam missing again was a wakeup call for her - she relinquished custody to Ben, and since then, Adam has lived in Rhydin, though he visits his mother a few times a year during school breaks.

Adam's forgiven Ben for what happened (a breakdown, a sudden resurfacing of his disorder that left Ben clueless to where Adam was, let alone that he'd been responsible for taking him anywhere), but their relationship is sometimes strained, especially lately. As he grows up, he finds more fault with the way his father pursues help for his illness (or doesn't), and sometimes finds himself resenting Ben for his abbreviated childhood. Neither of them are good communicators when it comes to personal issues (Adam was better when he was younger, but now fully in his teenage years, he avoids those conversations more often than not), and it creates tension between them.

His relationship with Jackie is much better - she mothers him, but not too much, and they're fairly close in age (about eleven years apart), so they get along well. However, Adam tends to be somewhat protective of her, too - Adam's friends are starting to notice that Jackie is very young and very attractive for a stepmother, which has ended in a couple of fistfights between Adam and a few of his friends. Boys will be boys?

He adores his sister Lily. He loves his brothers, too, but he's as wrapped around Lily's tiny finger as Ben is.

Additional Info:

** Likes archery more than firearms, though he knows how to use both.

** His best friend is a wolfboy named Jack.

** Loves hockey, though he doesn't play. Canucks, of course.

** Still plays soccer and baseball, junior varsity in both sports this year.

** Suffers from abandonment issues to a degree, along with mood swings. Sometimes angry outbursts, but usually directed at his father, so that could just be being a teenager.

** Saved every letter Ben wrote to him while they were separated for a few months when Ben first got to Rhydin.

** Sort of plays guitar.

Jackie Sullivan

http://i49.tinypic.com/r879sz.jpg

Name: Richard Allen Kensington
Birthdate: April 27th, 1952
Age: Sixty
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Height: 5? 9"
Weight: 175
Hair: Dark brown and peppered with a well groomed grey beard.
Eyes: Hazel

Parents: Nicholas Allen and Charlotte Eloise Kensington.
Siblings: Joshua Nicholas Kensington (younger brother)
Relationship: Divorced three times and married to Claudia since November 22nd, 2008.

Occupation: The sweeping term for what Richard does is a financial adviser, but he will always be the first to insist it doesn?t even begin to explain what he can do for others. While yes, he will handle the general finances of any business, he also takes interest in helping his clients both invest their fortunes and make solid plans for a stable future. When his clients flourish, so does he.

Personality: Richard is a businessman before all else. He views everything in terms of business and how it can benefit him and his empire. This isn?t to say that he?s a cold or cruel man, not by a long shot, but he only has so much attention to give and it takes quite a bit to really garner it.

Even in the terms of his marriages, both current and past, it was a matter of finding that perfect business partner. There were three previous women who attempted to take the role of being Mrs. Kensington and they all failed quite miserably. They would start out well enough, but as time progressed they would become far too needy and clingy for Richard?s tastes. He needed someone who knew there was a time and place for attention, but more importantly there was a large time to be set aside to work.

Enter Claudia. She is lovely, charming, and more than capable of holding her own. Claudia is fully aware that when Richard succeeds, it allows her to succeed and that is why their marriage has been rather successful for the most part. While Richard does love Claudia dearly, they also understand the balance of their relationship and what makes it work.

Talents & Abilities: Richard has a mind for finer details. He revels in them. Picking out the small aspects of a situation that so many others would let slip through the cracks, that?s the sort of thing that gives him a thrill. His confidence is abundant and it?s very rare he will ever back down from a situation due to being unsure of himself or fearful. He reads people well enough, having a knack for knowing what to say at the right time and even when to take a step back.

Strengths: Give him a problem and he?ll figure out a way to solve it no matter how much blood and sweat it takes. Well, for a price.

Faults: There are many times when Richard can come off much too strongly towards people and his over the top personality can be considered a turn off to others. Not that it gives him the urge to change anything about himself. Instead he says the person wasn?t worth dealing with in the first place.

Ben Sullivan

Date: 2015-05-07 22:02 EST
ben's had the same profile for nearly three years now (except it's just gotten longer and longer) - i'm going to archive the old one here (because i'm weird like that and want to save it) so i can stop putting off writing a new one! :D

Character Name: Ben Sullivan
Race: Human
Gender: Male
Place of Origin: Vancouver, BC
Can Be Found: until he can't be
Profession: Detective
Appearance: About 5'11", maybe 180 lbs, looks to be mid- or late 40s. Blond hair, usually spiked up to some degree, blue eyes that shift with the lighting -- deep, bright blue in dimmer light, washed out to a pale almost-grey in bright lighting.

Can come across as aloof, arrogant, cocksure, alpha (and his body language often reflects it), but he's also personable, quick to smile (often lopsidedly), introspective, private.

Of course, there are also drinking binges, violent rages, and moments of biting criticism.

Mercurial -- that's what it is about him, isn't it?

Sometimes has a young black Labrador retriever trailing at his heels, appropriately named Shadow. The dog is quiet, calm, and rarely leaves Ben's side when around.

Rarely on display, but he has one tattoo: A Champion sparkplug logo on his right upper arm.

------

"We're all different to different people. I'm okay with that."

Everybody has ghosts. Devils, demons, skeletons in the closet. Some try to escape them. Some conquer them -- others are vanquished by them. Some are tortured by them to the point of breaking; some torture themselves to quiet them: drink, drugs, danger. Ben Sullivan created others inside himself to keep those demons away -- keep them caged, make the memories somebody else's, so there are no demons to quiet, no memories to forget.

It's not a foolproof way to cope, and now, decades later, it might be causing him more harm than good. A normal, regular life interrupted by periods of blackness -- a whisper of a waking dream, a few seconds of outward stupor, and he's someone else. Risk taking behaviour. Life of the party. Sharp-tongued philosopher. Brave in the way a frightened ten year old might be.

Violent vicious beast, madman-genius-poet, partyboy addict, neglected lovestarved child.

Each one lives inside of him, just waiting for the right time to live in the real, waking world for a moment, an hour -- a day, a year.

And each time he wakes up, comes back to himself, there's a splitsecond fear that everything will be gone, that one of them has gone too far or he's been gone too long. That while he's been gone, hidden, sheltered from whateveritwas that made him go in the first place -- that while they let him go away to protect him from those ghosts of memories, they've broken everything else in his life beyond repair.

The alternative is exploring those wisps of nightmare-memory, tearing down the internal walls -- loosing those demons from their cages and allowing them free reign. Maybe he could triumph over them. The fear is that instead they will overcome him, consume him, be much too much to survive on his own, as they were when he was only a boy.

So instead, they stay, and sometimes they are gentle and kind, and sometimes they are cruel and cutting, and sometimes they wreak havoc -- "the you that screws around, the you that smashes things, the you that hates yourself - and sometimes hates me" -- but better the devil you know, even if those devils are his own hidden selves.

------

"We're moving towards figuring out what those triggers are, Ben -- the triggers that send you into blackouts and mood swings."

"What do I got, doc?"

"What I see is a guy who's in a lot of pain, and honestly, I don't think you're gonna be able to move forward until you deal with it. Why can't you let yourself grieve? I mean, what's the worst thing that can happen? You afraid you're gonna go away? Not come back? What are you scared of?"

"If I throw out my devils, my angels -- I might go too."
Skills: Excellent with a pistol. Quick-witted. Tenacious. Good at puzzles. Good liar - good at detecting lies. Resourceful -- like you might not believe.

------

"Ben and I almost died tonight. He saved my life -- and a lot of others."

"So he's a hero?"

"Not really, no. Since we've been partnered, his behaviour has been ... inconsistent. Unstable."

"Is he a good detective?"

"Yeah, he is. But he's coming apart, literally. He changes: his voice, the way he moves. I'd swear he has multiple personalities."

"So he should seek professional help and ruin his career?"

"Before something terrible happens, yeah."
