Paola

The sun was just touching the horizon when Devin knocked on Paola?s door. He leaned one bare forearm against the frame as he waited for her to answer. He could have worn more clothing in deference to Storm?s anticipated presence ? instead he had opted for comfort in a pair of loose linen pants and nothing else. Slung over one shoulder was a small padded bag that held the needles Laurin had so carefully made for this exchange. Nervous energy had him tap-tapping on the door frame as he waited.

"No need to be impatient!" A sing-song teasing voice broke past the barrier of her door as her sensitive hearing picked up the tappings of his foot. It was not that she was not ready, but she found herself looking at her reflection in the mirror. The buttons of her shirt were up to her collarbone, no makeup grazed her face, and her curls appeared to look in permanent disarray. And just what did Devin see that she missed? This not being the place for such thoughts, nor did she have the time, she hurried her steps to the door and she swiftly opened it. "Ready?" A gentle smile appeared while she shut the door behind her.

?I?m always impatient! And usually ready.? He added that as she opened the door. Her smile brightened her features, brought warmth to an expression that could look remote. He gave her a cocky smile and tucked one of the unruly curls behind her ear before he continued. ?I think I?m ready for this, at least. And you?? He took her arm as they set out on the walk to the remote area where they would set up the circle. Storm knew where to meet them; Devin glanced up at the sun that seemed to be sinking either much too fast or much too slowly. It wouldn?t be much longer, now.

"As ready as to be expected." While she had little choice but to take his arm, she did it happily and without any complaint. They took several steps away from her home, before realizing that it would be a touch colder than pleasant, and Paola wished she had brought her cloak along. Finding Devin's source of heat the only option, and one she rather enjoyed, she walked closely to him, "I feel now is an inappropriate time to point out that while we may know most of the procedure, we have not a clue of what will happen after?"

He had to chuckle at that. ?And they say that I?m reckless.? He lifted his free hand to rake his hair back from his eyes as they walked. Rather enjoying their closeness as they walked, he didn?t expand the circle of warmth that radiated from him. ?It?s a good point. The journal didn?t really say much about it. Just that the reactions were different in degree and kind, even between the pairs.? Devin frowned slightly and looked at her with concern turning his eyes coal-black. ?I?m hoping for the best.?

"I am as well. At least it is just us, and Storm's presence will help tremendously if something were to go poorly. I am glad we decided to go first without waiting another moon cycle for everyone to be ready." She dismissed his concern with a smile. It was not that she lacked any, but she embraced her choice and her need to know what was to happen.

Mention of Storm?s presence only deepened his frown. ?I know that Storm has the ability with shields to deal with this, and there?s the way she can touch all the elements ? but I?ll be honest. Her being the one to stand in the warding circle scares me. If something goes wrong, it?ll not only risk her but her child along with the pair of us.? He?d no sooner spoken the words than he shook his head sharply. ?And I shouldn?t be dwelling on it. You?re right, I?m glad we?re trying this now.?

She was glad that he had let the subject go, because Paola was unsure herself. While she wanted to reassure that Storm would not put herself or the baby in danger, it could not be said with absolute certainty. "I know that we are nearing close, and I do not want to have thoughts of anything other than what needs to be done when we get there. So," she took a deep breath, and held it for a moment before releasing, "regardless what is to become of tonight, it will not change what I think of you."

Coal-black hadn?t brightened in his eyes, nor would it with that statement. He looked at her sharply as they neared the circle, and then abruptly halted. The idea that something during the bonding might alter either their emotions or opinions hadn?t even occurred to him. He turned to face her squarely, putting his hands lightly beneath her elbows. ?Do you think it might? For if that?s the case, then don?t make the promise and feel yourself forced to try and hold to it later.?

"I do not know what to be prepared for. I do not say things just to make you pleased or happy. I say that because I feel that way. Truly." Slightly insulted that he would think that, her back straightened as she looked at him straight into those black eyes.

He saw the stiffening posture, the slight coolness that fell over her expression and glinted in her turquoise eyes, and his hands tightened very slightly on her elbows. ?If there?s no question, then there?s no need for the saying. But since you have, then you should be just as certain that nothing that can happen tonight would change what I think of you.? It was a blunt statement that left the core matter untouched between them ? neither had actually said what they thought of and for the other.

Paola had no desire to touch upon that core tonight, and let it fuddle and confuse their minds. The chill and aloof nature wanted to overrule, but instead she forced herself to relax. She even attempted to smile, "That puts me at a great relief to know so. Thank you."

Sheen of bronze over the black concern was an indication of the relief he felt when she relaxed, when she made that try at a smile. He?d thought her statement was an indication of doubt ? perhaps it had more simply been a way to seek reassurance. Once again the gnawing self-doubt that he struggled with had led him into over-reaction. So when she thanked him, he leaned forward to kiss her forehead and then finally released her elbows so they could walk the remainder of the distance to the circle together. ?Thank you.?

Storm was already putting work into creating shields by the time the pair arrived to the remote location. She gave them no greeting or acknowledgment. All of her focus was on creating shields that involved all of the elements to create the most protection as possible. They needed to be protected from each other, and while she would not admit out loud, she was the one that required the most protection. With this in mind, she made her shields accordingly.

"That should be the last of them." Storm scratched her forehead around the hairline briefly. They were far away from any homes or Elementals on the Guardian plane, in a place Devin had simply named as "the circle." It took her more time than expected to create the various shields she needed, a different set for each of them as well as the entire circle. Stepping away to a safe distance, she nodded to the pair, the darkness of the night illuminated by floating balls of light.

Devin held the pair of fragile needles with their slender glass tubing carefully as he looked from Storm to the shields and then over at Paola. The night sky was dark beyond the balls of light, with no moon to illuminate it. He took a deep breath and then handed one of the needles to Paola. ?Are you ready?? He began calling up his element as he asked the question, and coal-black concern vanished as his eyes kindled and lit, brightening steadily through all the colors of fire to finally blaze white.

Paola could only nod in return to Storm as she backed away beyond the shields made for the bonding. She tried to smile for Devin, but it only appeared on half of her face, "Yes." It was said simply, taking the needle before calling her own element forth. Her vivid eyes grew even brighter, like two blue candles placed against the darkness of the night. With her needle in place, she watched Devin to match her timing to his. The winds picked up, blowing around her ankles, and slowly but surely up around her frame.

Unlike Paola, he was holding his element fully, but entirely contained for now ? not even a spark to escape. It seemed safer, without knowing what effects this bonding would have. Balling his hand into a fist and tensing his arm, he watched the vein at his elbow show in relief through a white-haze. A last look was given to Storm before he plunged in the needle. He would have warned her to be careful, not to take any risks ? to close them entirely within the shields and protect herself and her unborn; it had all been said before, and so he simply nodded once, gave her one of his cocky, confident smiles, and inserted the needle into the vein.

When Devin paused, Paola did as well. Her hand was also closed into a fist, and she squeezed to bring out the vein that was the most distinct. Her winds were coiled up around her tightly now, condensing her strength to offer all that she could. Taking the needle and carefully making sure the blood collected would not spill, she carefully inserted into her arm. The pain did not bother her, for it was just a small pinch and nothing more. It was the worry of all the things that could go wrong. Slowly squeezing her fist still, the blood began to gather.

Storm also accessed her gift, only to have the ability to manipulate the shields if needed be. Her sight refined with the small amount of light offered. While she had been given instructions on the process of the bonding, she was still uncertain. Rather than offering assistance, she continued to watch with anticipation.

For all the difficulty there had been in finding out about the battle bonds, once the crabbed notes of Abeni had been deciphered the process was remarkably simple. Under a new moon, using the needles, the pair drew their own blood. Holding their power, they exchanged it. No words to be spoken, just actions. Devin?s vial filled with blood, and he held it carefully so as not to lose any. When it was full, he withdrew the needle, ignoring the thin crimson trail that escaped from the puncture wound. He was actually shaking from the effort of holding his fire at full force and so tightly contained. When he stepped forward, and closed the distance to Paola, his hands were rock-steady.

When Paola saw Devin move towards her from the corner of her eye, she tried to see if her vial was full or not. Unable to see, but thinking it was full since it wavered with any tipping, she slowly pulled it out. Her face showed no sign of pain, and a small dot of red on her arm grew and began to trickle. When he closed the distance to her, she could not bring her eyes to look up to him. All she did was offer her other arm for him to put the needle in.

He could understand the worry, the fear that might keep her from raising her eyes to meet his, and still wish that she had for this moment. But words were held in abeyance for now, as he took her arm. He shifted it slightly to better see the blue line of her vein through her pale skin and the haze of fire-white in his eyes. His hands were hot on her skin, barely less than painfully so. One deep breath and he slid the needle in, and the blood in the vial began to trickle into her veins. He could feel it, as if somehow it were still contained within his own body. He could feel the fire surge, pulse, race as it sought out this new playground.

It was just before the needle was slipped into her arm, that she brought her eyes up to look at him. The heat of his hand was almost painful, but in a more familiar fashion. As soon as the needle entered, she felt like he had inserted the rawest form of Fire into her arm. It stole her breath, and clouded her vision. She could not tell if it was a painful experience or not - all she could feel was fire brighter than the sun. There was only a small piece of her mind that was set on the task, and not to experiencing. She did not even wait for him to pull his hand off of her once the blood from his vial was gone, before she blindly reached out and found his arm with luck, sliding her needle seamlessly into him.

When he had felt the fire invading Paola with his blood, it came to him, why they had to be holding their powers. It was to keep some control over the elements in the in-between time before the exchange was complete, so that one would not destroy the other. He barely had time to understand it, before all understanding was washed away. With her blood came something he had never truly felt before ? a rush of cold, with the air that she was holding. Air that was ? Goddess ? it was fuel for his fire. Pure, clean, cold ? as the vial emptied and the needle fell out of his arm, he convulsed, and with the convulsion, the fires lit. Augmented by Paola?s air, they exploded in a swirling maelstrom upwards to lash at the shields.

Storm tensed as she watched the jerking movements of Devin. She wanted to look away, and knew that she could not. She was prepared for the Air to fuel the Fire, and watched the shield that encased Paola shimmer as Devin's fire came much too close to her. "Hold it down, Devin." Her voice was crisp and rose to make sure that she had been heard. "She is not that strong in comparison to you. You must find that balance to control yourself."

Paola dropped her needle, her eyesight failing her. All she could feel was heat, the way it smothered her senses. She felt like her skin was red and blistering from the changes, and started to step back. Loosing her coordination, she tripped over her own feet. She gasped, Storm's words only muffled sounds, and she tried to push herself away from her sitting position.

Another convulsion wracked through him, brought him to his knees, and the fires surged and raged higher as Paola?s air fed the flames. He fell forward, with his hands knotting into the turf, and gasped as he struggled to regain his lost control. Storm?s words were an anchor in the raging inferno; he clung to them, to the desperate fear that woke for Storm herself and her unborn ? for Paola. A last lash of white-heat slammed out, almost reached the boundaries of the women?s shields, and then abruptly vanished. He was cold ? he?d never been cold before, never understood how terrible the sensation was when people spoke of it. Now it was shivers that shook his body, and when he looked up through the fall of hair into his eyes, they shone not with fire-colors but vivid, vibrant turquoise.

Storm set her lips in a firm line, watching pain and change so evident of each of their faces. The streams of white fire did not scare her, but she was certainly grateful when Devin regained control. She knew Paola was in the same pain, but it was not as dangerous as Devin. "Take deep breaths, Devin. You will grow numb to the difference." Her attention turned to Paola then, seeing her struggle in what appeared to be blind pain. "Paola," her voice gentled, and she took a hesitant step forward, "the heat will not harm, nor has the air left you."

"I cannot see." Her voice rose to pitches of terror and panic. She bumped into another shield as she could no longer back up, but she still tried to move. Her eyes were an odd combination of blue and varying colors, from gold, to red, to black. Since she could not move any longer, she was ripping her cloak off from her to try and release the heat.

He couldn?t still the shivers. Paola?s voice, the shrill panic of it, cut through the cold he was feeling ? and still he couldn?t stop shivering. He couldn?t touch his fire through the cold. She was tearing at her cloak, looked as if she would rip at her skin next if that wasn?t enough. He forced his body to obey, and half-rose, half-stumbled over to fall back to his knees next to her. He was freezing, and there was no color but the cold turquoise in his eyes as he reached for her hands, her arms. Storm?s presence was still there, calming his own incipient panic, but he still couldn?t find words.

"Devin. Help me." She gasped for air, her hand reaching out to grasp his arm. It no longer felt hot to her, but simply like grabbing another's arm. "It's too hot." Her hands where shaking fiercely as she tried to undo the buttons of her shirt. Logic still did not make its way to the front of her mind.

I?m too cold. The words echoed in his mind for a moment, a strange half-born echo that wasn?t entirely his own. Too hot. His hands were shaking as well as he reached for hers, caught them on the buttons of her shirt. Finally words came with his need to calm Paola, to protect her. ?I?m too cold. Warm me. Paola ? warm me. Let the heat into me.?

It never ceased to surprise Storm, how easily she could detach herself from feeling to just watching. It was clear to her that both of her fellow Guardians were confused, but she was not sure that they were truly in pain. It might be their minds telling them something was different, and sent them into a panic. As much as she wanted to interfere, she did not want to any more than she already had. She needed to see if they could manage alone or not.

"I cannot... I cannot." Her shaking fingers were caught in his against her chest. Swirling eyes were staring at the color of his. Her breath was ragged, and she tried to close her eyes and focus on his voice. She needed to pull herself together. She searched for the new source of this heat that smothered her. Finding it like a knot that was taut against a line, she pulled and simply released the heat stored in her and expanded it around her.

Sparks caught and swirled in the air with the rush of heat Paola released ? but that heat was enough to break the terrible grip of the cold on Devin. One last shudder released the tension that had held him taut and shivering, and he was able to inhale a gulp of air. Dust kicked up from the ground with the breeze that rose as the tension faded away. It would take time and practice before either of them had a firm grip on their temporary elements. For now, it was enough. From holding her hands, he shifted to pull her against him, to lean against his chest with his arms around her shoulders. ?Goddess, Paola.?

Most of her panic released with the heat, his blood finally mixing well enough with hers to where she did not feel as uncomfortable. Her breathing was still rough, but the color of her eyes controlled to her normal hue, and she stopped accessing her gift. "Devin." Her voice wavered as he pulled her close. He did not feel the same - there was no unusual, comforting warmth, "Devin," she repeated, her arms going around him, "I felt like I could not breathe... and... and?." she was clearly shaken from her past experience.

?But you can breathe now, and see. Not too hot, not too cold ? it?s all right, Paola.? His voice was calming, as soothing as he could make it. The turquoise finally faded and vanished from his eyes and dark brown concern mingled with amber as he pressed a faint kiss against her hair. From there he turned his gaze up to the standing Storm. ?I?m sorry.?

"You have nothing to apologize for. I think it might be best that you stay with her for a while, yes? It seems that you each can help calm the other when changes bring a panic about. I will see you both off, and then I will need to go. I trust that you know how to contact me if needed be."

Paola clung close to him, not yet ready to be released. "I thought you were harming me." She said softly to him, several worries and fears that she felt now surfacing. When Storm began to speak, it gave her mind a chance to slow down and return to a more average pace. She was alive and well, and so was he. No one was harmed, and everything worked to plan. "Stay with me." She murmured familiar words to him again, not yet wanting to lift her face from his chest.

At Paola?s soft words of fear he closed his eyes. He could not tell her how close to true that was, or how much it scared him to think on that. He responded to the quiet words against his chest, ?Of course,? before he spoke again and more clearly for Storm?s benefit. ?Of course I?ll stay. Thank you, Storm, for the risk you took and the shields you built. If we need you again, we will call for you, you may be sure.? Devin looked at Storm a moment longer before he bent his head and tightened the cradling grip around Paola.

"I would rather be here to help than not be here at all." Her ears picked up some of the soft words that they exchanged, but to give them privacy, she ignored it and continued with the last of the shields. She felt tired, and could only hope that the search for her husband later would not be a difficult one. "You can just gather her up and take her, or at least help her up. We need to be going."

?Of course.? He felt as if he had run miles without traveling any distance at all. His mind was screaming that there was no energy left in him, but his body disagreed and surprised him with the ease that it stood. Even with Paola?s slim form cradled in his arms it was little more difficult than normal. Somehow, it felt wrong for something so draining not to have affected him on a more physical level. He gave a nod of respect and gratitude to Storm, and then began the hike back to their quarters in this realm.
