?Within the next few months, we need to visit several cities and towns that are in need of restoring.? Shawn?s voice continued on past welcomes and pleasantries. Each chair was finally occupied with the proper Guardian, and the room hand a faint under glow of curiosity and excitement. Jeremiah however, could not erase his solemn expression. His last conversation with Storm left a sour taste in his mouth and still he felt that he could do nothing.

?I believe that splitting up into groups will be the most effective, and will make these visits easier. The first group is Anton, Laurin, Adrienne and Rukiya.? Since the Fire was closest to him, he handed a single piece of parchment to her, ?Here are the listing of places and what they need. The next group is Cornelious, myself, Emeric and Kiara.? The next paper was given to Kiara, ?The next group is Paola, Patrice, Andrew, and Renan.? Another piece of paper was passed over, this time to Renan, ?And the last group is Storm, Jeremiah, Celeste and Devin.? The last paper was given to Devin, and Shawn?s hands folded on the table.

Jeremiah did not try and peer over to Devin to read their agenda, but he did share a curious look with Storm. The groupings were put together for a reason, and it was just a matter of why. While he had his theories, now was not the time or place to voice them.

?With that out of the way, why do we not get right down to the middle of things?? The eldest Earth smiled, his thick stream of silver at his temple glistening under the light, ?The biggest topic to discuss is the Chaotics.?

Jeremiah watched Storm tense, as well as several others. His inability to help her bit him to the core.

As Storm listened to the different groupings, her thoughts were hidden behind her pale face. Traveling through portals was still not pleasant, but she did not get as sick, and was even ready to begin on time. Once her name was called, she only raised her brow at Jeremiah. The two strongest with the two that held the most potential? It was a possibility. A finger tapping silently against the dark wood of the table, her gaze shifted over to Kiara. The Guardian that caused the most trouble grouped with the eldest? Highly unlikely, and that had her curving her lips.

The look was not held for long, and she could not help but tense with the new subject that was brought to the table. At the room held an eerie silence, Shawn continued, ?The plan for invasion is the beginning of summer, with intention of replacing harmony after the attacks of the Air and Earth Realms. About half of us will go, along with recruiting other Elementals.? He fell silent then, waiting for input or questions.

Storm did not hesitate, ?I request to push the date till the end of the year. We have not had much time to meld our gifts together. Not many are truly prepared for what is to come.?

?Would your personal choices reflect your request?? Another voice spoke through, this one smothered in disapproval.

Storm looked at Jeremiah, and expected him to say that. Instead, she was looking down the table at Emeric. Surprised but not caught off guard, she looked back to Shawn, ?Yes, that is part of my request.? She tried to ignore the rising flush in her cheeks, ?I will not be in any position to go, and-"

?That was your own mistake, not ours.? Andrew sent Emeric a distinct warning look, but he continued on, ?You have chosen your priorities. Do not expect the rest of us to alter plans just for you.?

More surprised than supportive, everyone stayed silent. Storm ran her tongue over the top row of her teeth, and faked a smile, ?I have already dedicated several years of my time and service for our people. What have you done??

?I am afraid that we cannot push the date back that long, Storm. We have already waited so long for the Guardians to be complete; time is not on our side. Though your gift is the one most needed, we must move forward. If you have another idea, please, share it with us.?

Storm?s lips pulled tightly at the corners, and gently shook her head. Her chin rose slightly, and she did not give Emeric the satisfaction of her anger. Instead, her face remained expressionless and she stayed quiet.

?Anyone else??

Eyes of dark amber flicked to the agenda as Shawn passed the piece of parchment over. Only a flicker of expression over his usually mobile face had marked the announcement of their group or the quick exchange of looks Storm and Jeremiah shared. His lips thinned a bit and the shade of his eyes grew brighter with mild agitation as he looked over the list of towns and cities on the agenda. They were the ones that had been hardest hit in the Fire rebellion and Chaotic attacks; towns and cities with residents most likely to harbor resentment and anger toward any Fire that entered their Realm.

It took a moment for the bitter words being tossed around the table to register, and when they did he looked up from the parchment sharply. The tension between Emeric and Storm was more than obvious, but the cool disdain between the two was utterly foreign to Devin?s nature. His own temper tended to flare fierce and bright ? and die out just as quickly. Emeric grated against his nerves, harsh and raw, but Storm?s perpetual unease and sometimes-obvious instinctive dislike was almost as bad.

But reflections of that nature did nothing to solve the problem. If there was one thing that Devin hated, it was to remain passive. He rubbed the tri-colored pendant hanging around his neck absently between thumb and forefinger as he turned the issue over in his mind. The metal warmed with the contact, silky-smooth where it was worn down and rough where the engraving still stood clear.

Contrasts. The thought flashed into his mind along with an idea, and he finally spoke up. ?Contrasts. Antagonist elements. We bind within our Element during the choosing ceremony ? can we bind across? Or sideways? If we could merge several elements, we could duplicate the effects Storm achieves. If you,? Devin?s eyes flicked to Storm, ?taught us the techniques to act where the Elements touch and bind, we could proceed as planned in the summer.?

From looking at Storm, Devin turned his gaze to Paola. She had already gained a reputation as a scholar ? and even more of one for her maverick ways, sharp tongue, and disdain of traditions that she claimed were corruptions of older ways. From Paola he looked to Shawn. The eldest Guardian was an even more formidable scholar than Paola. Devin had no idea if his idea made sense to the others, much less whether or not it was feasible. If anyone would know, those two should.

Paola

Paola visibly relaxed as her group was called. Her vibrant eyes went from one, to the other and she did not bother to hide her grateful smile. The most even-tempered of the whole lot! Her hands itched and begged for the parchment to be placed in it?s place, but she would make sure to read the cities as soon as the meeting was over.

The next series of moments took Paola?s grateful expression away to one of utter horror. How could Emeric say such cold words? Paola might not know Storm well, but she knew of her hard work and good intentions. ?Guardian of Ice, hmph,? she mumbled under her breath only to have Anton smartly nudge her. Smirking and not caring who saw, she only rolled her eyes at Storm?s response. Where was the wit and defense? And furthermore, why did everyone just keep their mouths shut. As if on cue, her eyes rolled to the Fires. They had an open mouth and opinion on everything; say something!

But Shawn steered clear of the snide remarks, and Paola could do nothing but let it go. It was not her problem, and if Storm needed her help, she would ask for it. Now her gaze moved to Celeste, and the Water barely shrugged. Bah.

All anger and resentment was pushed aside as Devin spoke. Like the intellect she was, it was like she was eating is words the way she lingered on each careful syllable. Her mind was already formulating the reactions of such a bold move; so involved that she nearly missed Devin?s look. ?It is a risky move,? she started, tapping lightly against her chin, ?such blood bonds can bring serious problems if they are so strong that they transfer gifts in exchange. I know there is a way to temporarily bring such an exchange. It?s called.. ah.. hmm,? her blanking brought a rosy complexion, and she looked to Shawn for assistance before embarrassment took over.

Adrienne

Date: 2008-02-19 23:59 EST
Always quiet, Adrienne was busy taking notes from the beginning. Blue ink barely stained her palm as it glided seamlessly from feather tip to parchment. She had no time to react to the groups, or to catch looks between others. Once the lists of names were given, there was a small pause that gave her a moment to glance at her own grouping. It was one that she could work well with, knowing that the Fire?s outburst would fall on deaf ears. The moment was over and gone before the next issue was addressed, and Adrienne dipped her pen into the ink to refresh.

The topic of Chaotics was something that Adrienne had heard plently of for the past year. She knew much about their lifestyle, and her quiet nature kept her hidden from questions. Knowledge was precious, and she would not share it until it was necessary. Her busy hand began to note Storm?s suggestion, until the voice next to her startled her and drops of blue splattered across the paper. Inwardly scowling, she blew onto the paper so that the droplets would dry and not spread. As the snide comments were passed around, she made a side note about the confrontation. A leg brushed across hers and kicked Emeric?s, and Adrienne looked up to Andrew. She pursued her lips slightly, and made no further evidence that she was aware of the ongoings. All opinions were not even expressed within as she continued to write.

Her lips twitched at the corners as Devin spoke up. She was glad to have the newer Guardians speak in a positive manner. Despite the rumors of his anger becoming out of hand and affecting others, his desire to mend problems made him a visible asset. The bouncing ideas to Shawn and Paola only confirmed her opinion.

?Yes, temporary exchange is possible, through blood bonds of battle, but that is not something that can be practiced continuously. Any time we continue to manipulate who we are, eventually the change will become permanent.? Shawn paused, obviously considering. ?I would like to look into it more, but my suggestion is to not exchange gifts more than twice before the invasion. Training would be very long and intense, should this be the case.? He smiled slightly, and gestured between Paola and Devin, ?The pair of you should look into this further, and present an outline of a plan the next time we meet.?

?Anyone else??

When the room fell silent again, Shawn nodded and placed an easy smile on his face as if they had been talking about pleasant things. "For now, that shall be the end of this meeting. We will meet again within the next couple of weeks to hear of Paola and Devin's findings and prepare further." With a lost nod, everyone began to stood and collect their personal belongings. "Storm, may I have a last word with you?"

"Of course." Waving her father's questionable look, she moved from her seat to the closest one to Shawn once it was vacant.

"I am sorry for the circumstances that have fallen upon you. While I wish I could fix the problem, I cannot. If, you are able to come up with another solution, bring it up at the next meeting along with Devin and Paola. If you cannot," he offered a sad smile, "then I have to go along with the summer. I hope you understand."

"I know that you seek the best for us. I will continue to think upon another solution," patting his arm lightly, she then stood and walked out of the room. Most had gone off to perform their daily tasks, while others stayed behind and conversed quietly amongst themselves. Storm saw Paola and Devin, preparing a date to meet so that they could begin their research, Rukiya and Kiara standing together, though Kiara was looking to Jeremiah and Cornelious. Despite her desire to know what conversations were at place, she gave a few parting words with her father before eagerly heading for the portal to Zephyr Cottage.

She allowed her anger to surface now, simmering and bringing an angry flush to her face. Emeric was old-fashioned in is ways, and Storm almost wished that he had stayed after so that she could truly say the words that reflected her thoughts. Her stomach began to feel uneasy with the emotions that stirred, but she plowed across the bridge to the Four Winds forest, and braced herself for the harsh portal.

Storm Divine

Ewan worked on the tree in the back yard. One of the limbs was threatening the roof with the weight of the weather, and he was making sure it would not come crashing through. He was rather certain Storm had some protection against that, but it was best to keep up appearances for the neighbors. "Avery, hand me that rope there, please."

Eager to please, Avery bent down to retrieve the rope and hand to over to Ewan. Finding his father's doing entertaining enough, he got as close as he could to watch the fixing process. With no warning, Storm nearly came bursting out through the portal that she had placed in the backyard. At first, her face was flushed with emotion, but after the trip through the portal, her face lost almost all color. Barely giving more than a mumble of greeting, she was quick to rush inside to relieve herself of the nauseating feeling.

Ewan and Avery shared a look. In that look was all that needed to be said that left the project unfinished and both of them heading inside. Avery went on to his room, and Ewan went in search of Storm. "Beloved?"

The sickness had hit her hard, but it was not long lasting. Now she was hidden behind the closed door of the necessary room with her face against the cold flooring. She tried to settle her anger, knowing she would make herself worse if she continued. "Water, please?"

He found her closed away, and called through the door. "Of course." There was quick step to the kitchen to obtain the glass of water, and just as swift return. "Storm," he tried the door, "I have the water. Do I need to send for someone?"

She had not locked the door in her urgent need of release. "No, I will be fine. Just.." finding that lying on the floor did not support her words, she moved to sit up, "I just got myself worked up." She muttered, raising her hand up for the water. Her face was pale still, but her eyes were more clear.

One hand moved to the nape of her neck, the other hand released the water to her care, but traveled close by to assist her with the drinking of it if necessary. "Come, beloved, drink a bit and relax. In a moment, I will help you to bed, or the lounge if you prefer, and you can talk. I think though, Avery will want to see you either way to be sure you are well."

"Yes, of course." She said softly, a more steady hand taking the water. She was still tense, but after a deep inhale, she tried to do as told. Once Avery had heard his name, he had already sneaked out of his room and grabbed a hold of Ewan's leg, peeking a look to Storm. She pushed some of her hair out of her face, and mustered a smile, "Sorry to give you a fright, little one."

Ewan rested a hand on Avery's shoulder and gave a reassuring squeeze. "Go on, son, and see to your school project. It needs to be done before we travel. You see mother is all right." Avery, however, gave Storm a hug and kiss to her cheek to help her get better even faster, at least that was his thought, before he did as he was told. Ewan looked after the boy a moment, then crouched down before Storm. "Come, beloved, let us get you off the floor." He reached to support her in the endeavor.

The arm that was not holding her water, gently wrapped around Avery and her smile became more genuine. After watching him leave, she took another drink of her water. With Ewan's assistance, she slowly stood, and considered her options. The bed and bedroom was closer, and so that is where her direction lead them, "I am sorry to give you a fright as well." She said softly.

"That you did, but it is a good thing I rarely overreact," he offered in a rueful smile. He helped her to bed. "Something else I can get you?" Gentle touch of fingertips across her forehead. "Maybe you should rest and we will talk later."

Propped up against the pillows, she closed her eyes and sighed softly at the gentle touch to her forehead. "No, I will be fine." She set aside her glass of water, and reached out for his hand, "Will you stay in here with me for a little while? I promise to not take out my frustrations with you."

His hands wrapped about hers, and he nodded. "Of course. And you are welcome to take out as much of your frustrations as you need on me." He kissed her forehead. "What has happened?"

Storm Divine

Date: 2008-02-21 01:13 EST
After the kiss to her forehead, she scooted over so that he could at least sit down next to her. "The Guardians want to invade the Chaotics in the summer. I have to be there, and I cannot be. I tried to change the time until after the baby is born, and some.. " her face twisted as she tried to find the proper word and could not, "one told me that the Guardians cannot change their schedule just because of my personal decisions and priorities." Even now, her irritation was apparent.

He took the space offered to sit, and he listened to her frustrations. There was something to be said, but instead he only prompted, "And your response to that was?"

"That until he has made the same sacrifices I have, that he can keep his comments to himself." Though the look on her face reflected that she might have picked a better selection of words.

His own look revealed much the same, but a smile soon curved that expression. "Beloved, you can have such a temper. Storm indeed." It was light teasing, but he pressed the moment along, and asked. "What is the resolution then, or is there not one?"

Despite her frustration, she could not help but laugh softly, "Yes, I know," and she did not sound guilty over the matter. Feeling the need for physical comfort, she brought up one of his hands to kiss it's palm. "The resolution is to think of another solution, or they will continue with the plans."

He moved about, with care moving over her to lay next to her and gather her in his arms to cradle her against his chest. "Surely there is another solution. Why wait so long until summer? If you must be there it would be better before the physicality of your pregnancy became too demanding."

She went eagerly into his arms, finding the sense of security she needed. She snuggled up close, and breathed his scent in, "The reason why we are waiting is so that we have the time to work together more." She pondered his comments, biting on her bottom lip, "I suppose we could go sooner... but.." she stopped her sentence. How was she to tell him that the timing did not impact the risk? "... I will ask once we return."

"Do what you need to do, beloved. I wish I could be of some use, but this is your duty and your world, and all I can say is I will do my best to support you in this."

She smiled softly, wiggling up an arm so that she could gently caress his face. "Thank you, beloved." She moved so that she could rest her forehead to his, "What were you doing in the backyard?"

"Tending to the tree with the limb sagging over the rooftop. I thought it best to try and tie it away until the spring took off some of the weight."

"Hmm, and Avery was helping?" She let her hand slide to rest around his neck and closed her eyes. His gentle touches and support had erased her anger.

"That he was. Always good to have an extra pair of hands around when tending to yard work." A light chuckle and a kiss to the top of her head. "He should be working on the seasons project for school right now." The fact they could hear little, or at least Ewan could hear little, made him think that Avery was doing just that.

She released another soft sigh, and still did not open her eyes. "Perhaps next time I will be able to help." A soft smile, "I am sure he will do a fine job, he has excelled well under Phen's care. I will give it a look over tonight."

"You, beloved, have matters on your plate enough. Our son and I will see to the mundane things." He laughed, and revealed the cause of his laugh, "Unless, of course, taking a whack at a tree limb would help you with your business."

"And you do not have matters on your plate?" But she chuckled low, her body relaxing fully against him, "It might help with my mind, not necessarily my business, if you will."

He did not respond to the matters on his plate, but he did understand what she meant at the last comment. "Yes, indeed."

His lack of a response was enough of an answer for her. She smiled, but an unexpected roll of her stomach had her groaning softly. "This child better be a saint." She mumbled on a sigh as the moment passed, "I think I am going to try and nap, see if I feel better after."

"Let us get you properly settled then," and he moved to help remove her boots and see her under the covers. A kiss to her forehead, he whispered, "Rest well. I will check in on you later."

?Storm!?

She looked up as a voice came in to accompany the sound of the opening doors. Her intention was to finalize her notes for the meeting that was going to be taking place in a few hours. One book displayed in front of her, she set the quill down and stood to greet Jeremiah, ?Just getting ready for the meeting.? She gave him a warm embrace, ?It is good to see you.?

He returned the embrace, their past tensions seemed gone within the instant, ?The feeling is mutual.? His smile reflected the same, and he gently put her at arm?s length so that he could look her over, ?How are you feeling??

?Better than the last time we met, though the portals are still unkind.? Once she felt he had completed his short exam of her, she stepped away and back into her seat.

?Good. You certainly look much better.? He pulled up a chair to join her, ?And how is Ewan, and little Avery??

?Everyone is doing well, thank you. And you? How have you been?? Seeming as though her work would be currently set aside, She took a moment or two to close the book and shuffle her papers into an orderly fashion. ?Keeping your nose from trouble??

?As if you would expect anything less from me.? He gave an indignant grimace, before chuckling it off. ?Just doing the usual thing. You know me.? Storm?s eyes narrowed on him and he moved the change the subject, ?Are you ready for the meeting? Were you able to find what you were looking for??

?I have an idea, yes. But in honestly?? She let out sad laughter, ?I do not think it will work.? Letting out a breath, she brushed the crimps of her hair from her face. ?There is nothing I can do but go with what the choice is, Jeremiah.?

?We will make it work. Whatever happens, everyone knows that you have to be there. It is the degree of your involvement that is unknown.?

?That does little to settle. Let me finish up here, and then I will meet up with you for some tea before the meeting." She watched as he walked out, and sighed again. No matter what news was going to come about, she would keep her chin high and help as she could.

Even after Storm?s look gave Jeremiah no answers, he looked across the table at Paola and Devin. While there were no official seating arrangements, Jeremiah had always remained in the same seat, and so had everyone else. But today, Paola and Devin rearranged their seats so that they could seat together. While it only interrupted Anton and Renan, it seemed that everyone was giving this change some attention. Jeremiah assumed that it was so that they could ldook over their notes without having to pass down papers, but Storm?s continuous glances was giving him second opinions on the matter.

?Before we move on to the battle bonds,? Shawn briefly looked up from his notes to glance at Paola and Devin, ?I want everyone to know that we are going to start visiting the cities by the end of next month. Each group will take a day or two within each city, and go one right after the other. So, this should not take longer than a week. Rukiya?s group will go first, then Kiara?s, Renan?s, and last will be Devin?s. Clear?? When several heads bobbed in understanding, Shawn moved to the next item.

?First, we will hear of Devin and Paola?s findings. Then if anyone has anything else to add after that, they may speak.? This time Shawn?s deliberate glance went to Storm. When more head?s bobbed, Shawn offered a hand palm open to the duo to give them the floor.

Devin Archon

Date: 2008-03-20 04:24 EST
Emeric was glaring daggers down the table at their rearranged seating. The Water had already stifled sharp words at least twice before the meeting began. Storm was looking towards them and away in a series of glances that tried to be unobtrusive and failed. And Devin didn?t care a bit. Straight black hair almost mingled with curly blonde as he and Paola bent together over their notes.

Soft words, barely a murmur, exchanged, and Paola gave the back of Devin?s hand a light touch after Shawn?s question. Devin nodded, smiled quickly and then looked back at the rest of the gathered Guardians. Bruises were fading to green and yellow on his copper skin, the deep gash on his cheek had scabbed. Those watching him enter the room would have seen the slight limp he still walked with, might have seen the careful way he moved.

But despite all the surface damage, when Devin spoke up his voice was clear and confident. ?It took quite a bit of looking to find out more on battle-bonds than rumor and hearsay. But we have some answers, now. Not all that we need, but enough.? He paused, touched the tri-colored pendant around his neck, and then let his hand settle briefly on Paola?s.

?From what we can tell, battle-bonds are risky and hard to achieve. It seems to take a very specific set of circumstances to set one up. Even if everything seems to be prepared correctly, they can still fail if there?s too much imbalance in Elemental strength between the ones bonding. And failure ? well, we don?t want to fail.? Devin frowned and pushed hair back from his eyes before he went on.

There were some looks of confusion from the other Guardians, a few nods of agreement or understanding. ?I?m probably beginning at the wrong end. Think of a battle-bond as a bare step below the blood bond of marriage. It can vary in strength from bonded pair to bonded pair, but in the strongest exchanges, the pair will each feel some of what the other does. What affects one will affect the other. There are two main differences.?

The words hung in the air for a moment before Devin continued. ?The ? not exchange ? augmentation of powers, when each gain the abilities of the other as well as their own. And battle-bonds fade, over the course of a month. There?s some connection to the moon.? Another frown, another shake of his head, and Paola set her hand lightly on his forearm. The cool touch of her hand was enough to soothe his agitation for the moment.

?We don?t know why it is, just what has to be done. There?s some equipment we would need the help of the Earths to produce. It seems that blood is extracted from one of the pair undergoing the bond, and injected into the other, and then the process is reversed. And the whole time, both must be calling up their Element to their fullest capability.? Devin paused, ?It can only be done at night, and under a new moon. Then? the strength of the bond grows until the moon is full, and fades to vanish with the next new moon.?

Covering Paola?s slim fingers with his own warm hand, he looked at her to continue, to fill in anything of importance he might have missed, and to present their thoughts on what that would mean for training before any attack against the Chaotics.

Paola

Date: 2008-03-20 18:23 EST
Paola also was aware of the soft murmurs, casual ? and not so casual ? glances that they received with the changed seating. While Devin might now care and not return the glances, she did not understand what the commotion was about. No one told her that there was specific seating, and with only one set of notes, it made sense for them to sit next to each other. With having nothing to hide, Paola did not mind the faint exchanges of touch, or lingering looks from Devin. She was relieved to see that he was recovering well, though his limp tugged her brows down to lines of worry.

While Devin spoke, she kept her eyes glued to the several pages of notes, mentally checking off the things that he mentioned. The complexity of the bond was giving her some concern, and she knew that it would concern Shawn as well. She could hear the slight inhale within the room as Devin placed the bond just below marriage bonds. She could tell that he was struggling with description, and placed her hand lightly on his forearm for encouragement.

Once he placed his warm hand over hers, she cleared her throat softly. She could feel a particular pair of grey eyes fixated on their joined hands, but Paola acted like it was nothing, ?There are still several items that we have to sift through before we are completely certain that we are not missing any steps. I am sure that you all see the severity of what this bond is. I believe there is a reason that this technique has not been repeated since the Lost War. Consequences can be near fatal if we are not careful. However,? she smiled as if she was speaking of something completely different, ?I ? we, will not allow such mistakes to be made.?

?If everything goes according to plan, we could possibly begin the first bond within a few weeks. We have the potential to have either four or five cycles to train before we attack. That depends on the dates that we will be gone. Which, we can discuss at a later date.? A more pointed look to Shawn, ?Also, we may want to begin deciding which Elementals are going to be going. I know that we are all not going to go, and I know that some of us cannot bond,? now her eyes moved to Storm, ?and we are going to want to have enough people to have every available combination of bonding, if that is at all possible.?

There was little else that Paola could say without further discussion, and her vibrant eyes looked between the sixteen that were gathered.

Storm Divine

Date: 2008-03-22 03:14 EST
Everyone was listening keenly to what Devin and Paola had discovered, and some were taking notes. With each piece of research discovered, Storm heard the nail go into the door that she wanted open. She was scribbling notes about the effects of the bond, rather than the process itself. That was of no concern to her. The potential of the plan could not be denied. During a natural pause in Paola?s findings, Storm looked down at the notes and suggestions she had so carefully written down but hours before. With an inaudible sigh, she turned the parchment over.

Storm caught herself before she looked at their joined hands again, and Shawn?s voice interrupted her thoughts, ?The progress looks very promising. Well done, to both of you. Before we continue on, do we have any objections?" He looked specifically to Storm, and she barely shook her head.

?Who is going to be looking over these bonds?? Emeric?s voice broke through the silence, ?None of us have experienced these bonds. I find that it will be difficult to learn without a leader.?

?Are you offering yourself?? Kiara quipped with a smirk.

?I believe I am the best qualified, yes.? Emeric well ignored the questionable looks, ?I have experienced more bonds than anyone else here, with my pure bloodlines and the bondings I have experience through my family. I have an extraordinary adapting ability.? His shoulders squared as he defended himself, ?I am one of the best trainers within the Waters to control the gift.?

Before he could continue, Shawn barely lifted a finger to show that he was going to interrupt. ?While none of us doubt your capabilities ? there is a reason as to why you were chosen ? I believe Storm is the best qualified to conduct the training along with the information provided by Devin and Paola.?

Emeric did not conceal his look of disapproval, ?So, instead of the most experienced trainer you have, you intend to turn everything over to a pair of Guardians with little common sense or wisdom and no restraint, and to another who neglects her duty to instead pollute her bloodlines?"

Devin's eyes narrowed and he freed his hand from Paola's to lean forward with his elbows on the table. His voice was scathing in tone, and his eyes flared with a distinct gold light. "And in all your vast experience of bonds, when were you battle-bonded during a time of war? Keep your mouth shut on the matter until you know what you're talking about or until you've risked more than your pride for this." The fading bruises and scabbed gash were wordless indication of what Devin referred to. Paola?s hand sneaked under the table to rest on Devin?s leg in hopes to calm him down, though her face began to flush with anger.

Storm gaped, and before her own anger could surface, Shawn lifted his hands palm out to maintain order. ?Paola is an understudy of mine; I have no doubts of her capabilities. Devin put out several sacrifices in order for some of this information to be obtained. They both have the same, if not, more of a desire to find the answers than the rest of us. As for Storm,? he began to tick items off of his fingers, ?she is the Divine, and has a considerate amount of control over all the elements. She does not feel the effects of bonding ? which it would be foolish for her to participate in this bonding as she has no need to exchange powers. She has also trained others in controlling their gifts, and has had to become a student of learning every other element. It is not a matter up for argument.?

"If it is not a matter up for argument, then I will abide. But I can only hope that their reckless idiocy and disregard for all our traditions and bloodlines will not infect those they train. I intend to be well on my guard." Emeric flicked his fingers at Devin, Storm and Paola. His tone hinted at patient restraint in the face of lesser beings, and reeked of condescension.

Seething rage jerked Devin to his feet at that, and his chair went skittering backwards before it toppled over. The crash of the chair as it hit the floor sounded abnormally loud in the suddenly quiet room. ?Retract that.? His voice was very, very quiet, but his eyes were shading from gold to incandescent white. It was a warning of how very angry he was at Emeric?s words.

Paola?s eyes went wide and she flinched as she heard Devin?s chair go flying backwards. She looked at all the faces in the room, and the way all expressions faded into nothing. Her body went rigid, but she merged with their silence.

A warning that Emeric didn?t know to heed. The older Water was bitter at what he felt was the casual disregard of his skills and opinions. He was disdainful of the so-called abilities of the three younger Guardians. And he never backed down from his words. Emeric stood slowly, with great care to replace his chair before he stepped back from the table. ?I have nothing I wish to retract. I can understand such recklessness from a Fire,? the word dripped disdain, ?but obviously I should have expected no better from the Airs.?

?I would suggest that you reconsider your evaluation, Emeric.? Storm?s words were crisp and chilled. ?I think that there is something to be said that everyone else supports this decision except you. The Guardians are supposed to work together and be balanced, and instead you seek to take that away.?

The insults to Devin were nothing new ? it was the same condemnation he heard from every corner, from himself. Too reckless, no common sense, no restraint. But to lump in Paola, and yes, even Storm despite their differences, to the same insult; to accuse them of willfully risking the lives of others ? that was beyond the pale. Shawn?s half-formed words, designed to calm the situation, were cut off when Devin snarled back to Emeric. ?You will retract your words, you fething piece of Goddess-rejected scum, or I will make you eat them.?

Devin was rapidly losing what little grip he had left on his temper, the quick-flaring raging inferno of it, but there was enough restraint left that his Fire was well-contained. Instead it was several rapid steps that took him towards the older Water, the limp caused by his wrenched muscle only slightly slowing him down. Emeric backed a half-step and then flushed with anger at the reaction. He deliberately took a step closer to the young Fire, and his words were cold as ice. ?Rejected? I wasn?t the second-best choice.?

Paola?s face flushed again at Emeric?s words, and she leaned to whisper to Storm, ?Why is nothing being done about this?!? Storm only raised a finger in a sign of waiting, and they both looked towards the standing Guardians. Everyone was holding their breaths.

That was the final straw. The flimsy hold Devin had on his temper snapped, and he swung out with the back of his fisted hand at Emeric?s jaw. The impact of flesh on flesh sounded with an audible *crack*, and Emeric staggered back, lifting a hand to his bleeding mouth where the impact had split his lip. There was a look of stunned disbelief on his face. ?You? hit me.? The tone changed, from shock to anger. ?You hit me!? And Emeric straightened and lunged for Devin.

Jeremiah Pahadz

Jeremiah watched the entire scene with masked emotions. He did not undertand Emeric?s particular anger towards these three Guardians, but he had the feeling that Emeric would act towards all of them in the same manner. While he had he concerns for this bonding, Jeremiah would never insult his fellow Guardian in the manner that Emeric had done. He agreed with Storm, that his behavior would tear the Guardians apart rather than bring them closer together. It was for this reason that Jeremiah did not move when Devin punched Emeric.

When Jeremiah realized that Emeric was going to return the favor, he quickly stood and wrapped an arm around the Water?s chest. ?That is enough.? When Emeric struggled against him and while Devin did not seem to falter either, Andrew stood to stand in between them.

?That is indeed enough. Such behavior will not be tolerated from either of you.? Shawn stood them, his eyes entirely focused on Devin and Emeric, ?Both of you and interrupted our meeting for selfish motivations. Each of you are dismissed. Immediately.? When neither moved, Shawn rested his hands on the table, and leaned forward. ?I will not allow for the pair of you to behave so poorly when we have such serious matters on our hands. We will discuss a proper punishment at a later date. For now, neither of you are contributing in a positive manner. You are dismissed.? Shawn repeated again and waited until both men had left before sitting down again to finish the meeting.

Storm Divine

Jeremiah, Cornelious, Storm and Ewan headed for the meeting room, the silence comfortable among them. The silence echoed through the halls and reverberated into the rooms. ?I do not think the rest are here, yet.?

?We are a bit early yet. Not all Elementals arrive on a timely matter.? Cornelious directed the last comment to Ewan, opening the door to let everyone inside. Within the middle of the modest room was the large oval table with sixteen chairs, each engraved with different symbols.

Storm exited the room for a moment to return with an extra chair. Giving her husband a reassuring smile, she set his chair on the wall right behind her. There was no room to squeeze another chair under the table. It was designed for only the sixteen.

They were not only for very long. Soon the Guardians began to enter, either alone or with a small crowd. She introduced everyone to Ewan, and almost all seemed to know who he was without the introduction. While a few seemed curious to his attendance, no one questioned or opposed.

With only three Guardians still missing, Emeric stepped through, his face revealing nothing. His eyes instantly went to Ewan, and distain was evident on his face. Even as Storm tried to give a cheerful introduction, Emeric ignored Ewan altogether.

?You do not have to be here, if you do not wish to.? Shawn said without looking over his notes to the Ice Guardian. Emeric made no further indication, finding that ignoring the situation made more of a point to sit down. While everyone began to take their seat, Storm smiled over to Ewan with a wink before claiming her seat. The wait was only for Devin and Paola now.

The Elemental?s disdainful look named him before any other introduction offered. While it amused Ewan that Emeric played so well to the way he had been described, showing such amusement would have been poor form. He stood by his chair for a time, showing in some small measure, respect for those who belonged there and he would wait until all chairs were taken before he sat as well.

In that time, he gave a half smile, the fullness of it in his eyes and not his mouth, to his wife before he turned to observing the room again. It was an unpretentious, spartan sort of room. Well, judged, he felt, to the lack of adornment providing a more suitable atmosphere of sober discussion and undistracted thought.

However, he was not ignorant of the something intangible in the air. It was not as one could see the effects of the Elementals as they gathered, they did not display banners or obtrusive badges of their power as nobles of his world would, their arms and shields marking them for who they are. It was more like the feel of other on the senses. Ewan analyzed the feeling, compared it to his time with just his wife, and wondered at the difference. It was, in part, a very telling sensation that in a way, did its own part in satisfying his desire to learn more of Storm?s people.

It was upon the investigation of the room itself, the use of materials and their intent, how each fitted in its place with another, that he relaxed in a measure, let his body feel as one with the room, and not unlike how he used the distraction, the thought of being part of his surroundings, he encouraged others to find his presence as ordinary as a panel of the wall.

Devin Archon

They had left Devin?s house in the Fire Realm in good time for the meeting, walking at a brisk pace toward the portal to the Realm of the Guardians. Laughter as Paola gently mocked Devin was cut short when a tall Fire stepped squarely into their path. Faraji ? the Fire who had originally been selected by Renan for a position as Guardian; a position which had been yanked from his grasp and handing to Devin. Now his face was twisted into bitter rage as he confronted the pair.

Devin took a slight step forward, just enough to put himself a bit in front of Paola, and then went perfectly still. Tension knotted through his back, shoulders and neck, but it didn?t show on his calm expression or in his voice, level but touched with a hint of coldness beneath the pleasant words. They had never gotten along. ?Faraji. How unexpected to meet you here. I would love to stay and chat, but unfortunately we?re short on time at the moment.?

Faraji?s red eyes narrowed on Devin and then shifted over his shoulder to give a slow look, head to toe, over Paola?s form. It was a look that undressed her mentally, spoke wordlessly of possession, and then discarded her as of no further worth. It was a deliberate provocation, one that Devin did not miss. Finally Faraji?s voice grated out in response. ?Mixing with the lesser Elements, Devin? How very like you. She?s pretty enough in a pale way. Perhaps I?ll have her too.?

Jaw muscles set and jumped as Devin clenched his teeth hard to bite back his initial response. They didn?t have time for this ? their lead time before the meeting was rapidly melting away. But that initial restraint couldn?t take the sting from his response, or the threat that was also evident in the slight shift of his body weight. ?She?s much too good for you, Faraji, and wouldn?t want a discard. Now if we?re done here, step out of the way and let us move on.?

Paola did not flush or hide her face as she was deliberately gawked at. Her persona of the snobbish bookworm was carefully taken, having what seemed complete disinterest in the current happenings. Faraji did not bother her, nor did he get under her skin ? it was a waste of energy. Instead, she was concerned with the way Devin?s shoulder and back tensed and with how his anger immediately surfaced next to uncontrollable. She did not give the other Fire the satisfaction of her retort.

?We?re not done, Devin, and we won?t be until I get back the Guardianship you stole from me. I should have the White Fire, not you. You don?t have the guts to use it as it should be used.? Faraji?s features twisted with hate as his red eyes narrowed. Paola was forgotten for the moment as if he had never seen her ? he had only been using her as a prod to dig at Devin?s infamous temper. When the younger man hadn?t lost control as he would have only a few months before, Faraji?s hate increased as did the calculation in the back of his mind.

Devin?s fist clenched, hard, and then released. His eyes, changeable as the Fire he was, flared through shades of gold and yellow to searing white. Only the feel of a cool hand on his shoulder kept him from lashing out with the White Fire that Faraji felt he should hold. When he spoke again, his voice was cold as ice. ?Apologize to Paola and step out of the way, Faraji. Before this turns into something neither of us want.?

?I do not require apologies from animals.? Paola gave a sharp smile, ?It is beyond their capabilities.? She gave Devin a look that sent several messages: to calm down, to hurry, and her affection.

The mocking bow Faraji gave then was much too florid. His voice was as smooth as silk as he straightened and stepped off the path, addressing Paola directly. ?My sincerest apologies, Lady Paola. I shall hope to? meet? with you again.? The way he lingered over the word ?meet? made his implications more than clear. Rage shone clear in his red eyes as Paola just gave that sharp smile again, and his smile was twisted as he turned to walk away.

The confrontation had taken more time than they had to spare. They were several minutes late by the time they passed through the portal to the Guardian Realm, and later than that by the time they made it to the meeting hall. Devin was still agitated by the encounter, riding a knife-edge of restraint and rage. The white heat had faded from his eyes, but they were still sparking with flashes of orange and yellow over gold.

Emeric?s coldly polite, condescending tones were almost enough to snap Devin?s control when the Water spoke up as Devin and Paola entered the hall. ?So very nice of you to finally take time from your busy lives to join us. I suppose we must learn to make special exceptions for three now instead of just one.? It was a jab at Storm as well as Devin and Paola, and again the muscle along Devin?s jaw jumped and twitched while he clenched his teeth.

Crossing to the meeting table with Paola, Devin held in his words. If it weren?t for the telltale flare of white that shone and then vanished under yellow and orange in his eyes, or the jumping muscle of his jaw, it would have looked as if Emeric?s words hadn?t even been heard. Devin gave a curt nod of acknowledgement to Ewan and then held Paola?s seat for her before he took his own.

?If you need special exceptions as well Emeric, than please, share it with the rest of us so that we can be of service. We are here to support each other, are we not?? Paola adorned a rare, charming smile, she made sure to introduce herself to Ewan first, extending the starting time further, before taking her seat.
