Rhydin, 2033

Dusk was slowly losing it?s nightly battle for supremacy over the city of Rhydin. Things had changed over the last seventeen years. Stores had come and gone, their movement noted only in the business section of the yearly phone book. One stood in the same place it had for over two decades. By now the neighborhood buildings had become so permeated with the smell of sulfur coming from Kruger?s Exotic it would take nearly as long for it to subside once the place had shut down. Other things hadn?t changed either, people still walked the marketplace browsing wares or just getting from one place to another. Their faces may be different, but the goals were almost eerily similar.

There were changes to the shop as well, rust coated hinges on a sign that announced the place?s name in weathered paint and wood. That of course would only be obvious to those who?d seen it long ago. The doors still stood wide open, faint light flickering within from the coals of the forge. The almost melodic ringing of a hammer on metal chiming its way to the world beyond. To any who approached, they?d hear a noise of a different sort inside.

?I don?t understand, this is supposed to be done already. You keep making promises and then don?t follow through.? The baritone voice barely carried over the hammering, but from it could be told that the speaker was still young, and that voice would deepen into the one which responded.

?You don?t understand? It?s simple Niko, none of this matters? not anymore at least. There will always be some emergency, someone whose needs outweigh my own. I?m just tired.? That voice, deeper but so similar in tone and tenor was certainly a close relative to the man with the hammer. The sound may have been the same, but the words held on to consonants just a little too long and every *S* held a slur to it.

?You?re drunk. Just be quiet and let me finish.? Frustration laced its way through the words that seemed to carry even more disappointment from the younger man. ?It?s been six months, Pop. You need to get out of this?? The voice trailed off as though unable to find an appropriate word.

By Averia?s estimates, she had exactly twenty-four minutes to get there and back without her disappearance being noticed. That was being generous. But before long, her mother would emerge sans Avy and oh there would be hell to pay for those who let her slip by without notice. She would have to thank Alexander later. He made the best distraction after all. The rooftops were the easiest way to run undetected and so they saw the little archer leaping and dashing from pitch to pitch until Dragon?s Gate gave way to the Marketplace. Vaulting a much too tall wall sealed the deal and so she descended to ground level for the final leg of her breathless journey.

No, we can?t spare anyone right now solely on a feeling, Averia. Her mother had said, wholly unaware of a blood bond forged years prior when she and Adelaide were but children. Who knew that dabbling in witchcraft at a young age would prove to pay off down the line? It was more than just a feeling, she was sure of it. Something was wrong with Addie, the second time she had been given such a feeling in a little over a year and a half?s time. The first she had brushed off, no small feat when she looked back on it. The second she couldn?t ignore. No matter how far Addie had gone, Averia was always aware at the very least of her godsister?s life force and for a few too long moments, it had been extinguished wholly, snuffed like a candle. It was a feeling she didn?t want to ever feel again but the fact she had been subjected to it to begin with unsettled her in ways that she couldn?t quite describe. So she went to her mother, certain that Claire of all people would understand the need to find her and make sure she was okay.

That had blown up in her face.

It also drove her to the front door of Kruger?s Exotic at a late hour in search of her last hope. The quiet disagreement deep in the shop?s forge didn?t quite reach her ears but the energy was unsettled just enough that she hesitated to enter. A few moments of contemplation had her deciding though that if something were truly wrong then she needed to step inside. So the archer crossed the threshold with one last look over her shoulder and followed her ears in hopes of finding the smiths within.

?Nikolai? Mister Allen?? Her voice lifted, a melodic and almost chime like sound that suited the choirs of angels of the highest orders. Perhaps it would serve as enough of a warning to tell of her coming.

?Nick?? He?d heard Averia before he saw her, that instinctive comeback going out at her without thought to the hardness of his tone. He felt a little like a giant when he looked up to see the girl, no she was more than that now. His dark eyes squinted slightly at her, almost recognition gave way to a full dawning that seemed to hinge upon those silver eyes, and perhaps more importantly the way her hair seemed to drink in even the low light of the forge. ?Avy? I don?t think I?d ever have expected to see you? not in here at least. It?s just Nick now. Sorry if I snapped at you.?

Somewhere in the initial shock of being called his full name, and the moment of epiphany to the young woman?s identity Nick missed the rise and approach of Kruger, all at once the hammer and tongs were no longer in his grasp. ?You?re overheating it, keep those things under control boy. She?s just a girl, you?ve seen them before.?

Nick rolled his eyes, but at least his father was actually doing something now. ?You?re one to talk.? The words were mumbled, not wanting to feel the smack on the back of his head for being sassy. ?Go, I doubt she?s here to see me.? Nick moved out of the way, and let Kruger get to work. He licked his lips a little trying to figure out the best way to find out exactly what brought Averia out.

?Are you? Here to see me?? Blunt may not have been it, but it was easiest to get to the point. He pulled the apron free of his torso, and reached for a shirt to cover up with, that half finished dragon tattoo on his shoulder and upper arm became half buried in a sleeve. ?Or are you here for him?? His thumb went over his shoulder, it was his shop after all. The only consolation that Nick could take in his own lack of finesse was knowing that had it been the mother and not the daughter, he?d be the one watching the tripping tongue.

?Nick huh? So you?ve graduated to a grown up name, have you?? Unflinching in the face of brash bluntness, the only sign of her impending impatience came with a gentle bob onto her toes, jostling her quiver as she rocked back onto her heels. There were few places as sacred as a forge, that much had been impressed upon her and her time was short so she knew she shouldn?t linger. ?I didn?t think I?d find myself here either? but circumstances have proven it necessary.?

As Nick neared, she took the briefest of moments to avert her eyes while he pulled a shirt on, thinking polite prudence was better than the inevitable blush that would have filled her cheeks otherwise. It gave her a moment to cast a vague smile toward the older smith, the curve of her mouth limned with inherent sympathy that needed no words. Nick?s question drew her back to him though and she blinked a few times, almost deer in the headlights in the widening of her eyes.

?Um. I, um. Both of you, actually? I need your help and I didn?t have anyone I could ask and trust to do what I need?? It was one hell of a hook, that was for certain. As she led with that, she took a deep breath to steady her thoughts before continuing. ?Something?s wrong with Addie and I don?t know what it is. But I can?t find out on my own so I need someone capable of finding her and making sure she and Kane are okay??

Grown up name? Yeah, maybe those other names make me feel like a kid. Nick only heard a few words from Averia before his own look of concern washed over his face. The hammering had quit behind him, a sure indicator that Kruger was paying far more attention to the pair of them than he was pretending. ?All business then, I should have known.? Kruger?s voice nearly made him jump out of his shoes. He was acutely aware of his father?s presence now, standing there at his side. He was much taller than the silver haired smith, but somehow it still felt like he loomed ever taller. ?What does your mother say??

It was a bit of a surprise to the younger man that his father had yet to say the woman?s name. He could be odd that way about some people. ?What do you need me to do?? Nick?s question ran roughshod over Kruger?s as though it was of lesser concern. Perhaps that was because to him it was. ?What can I possibly do that you can?t with all of your resources?? Maybe it was like she said, a trust thing. Somehow though, Nick felt like he was one of those resources now. So why did that suddenly make him happy? He kept that expression from his face, something made easier by needing to ignore the grunt that Kruger directed his way.

Nick fought the urge to reminisce, Avy seemed more than serious. His head was of a different opinion though, bringing thoughts unbidden. And what about you, Avy? Have you also graduated to a grown up name? He drove his fingernails into his palm and did his best to stay focused on the moment, knowing two things. His thought wasn?t real. It was a defense mechanism that had started not long after his childhood friend had disappeared. That was when he?d started deflecting serious thoughts about her with humor.

"If it were business I'd hire third parties to do this. This isn't business, Mister Allen, it's personal." Little as she may have been, there was no lacking confidence in her tone or the lift of her chin. Defiant to a fault, she set her jaw and squared her shoulders, almost as if she had expected this sort of pushback. No sooner was the m-word out of Kruger's mouth did she speak again. "She isn't here, is she? While I can't speak for her, I can only say that she won't allow me to go personally."

Though her argent eyed gaze lingered on the older Allen for a few unsettling moments of heavy weight, Nick's question snapped her back to him like a taut bowstring released and left to rest. Habit more than anything, really, it was easy to come back to him that quickly. Choosing her words carefully, she tried to frame her request in such a way that the elder of the two might be more inclined to agree. "I think I found the point at which she was sent back to. If I can just get someone there... they can make sure she's okay. But with everything going on, I need to make sure it's someone she knows and trusts. Someone I trust. Impartial enough to act accordingly but close enough to know just when that has to happen. I... I know I'm asking a lot, but I wouldn't do it if I didn't absolutely have to.?

With Nick?s question answered, she turned next toward Kruger, lifting a level eyed gaze to meet the old smith?s. ?You know as much as I do that it?s not what my mother says but rather what she doesn?t say that speaks loudest. And that little crease she gets in her brow when she?s worried and the pull of her mouth that says she?s chewing on the inside of her cheek? Those say far more than ?Blah blah blah, Averia, the balance comes first, no matter how much it pains us?. And you know that too. Don?t you, Kruger??

?Hmmh.. Sure, I know those looks, and the things that don?t get said.? Nick had moved while Averia spoke to his father. Slowly he had gravitated toward her, catching the wistful look on Kruger?s face and having no idea what it meant. He had already decided what he would do. Being close to Avy though, it made the room feel like a scale that had gone completely out of balance. Was there any wonder that he felt like he?d stepped into chaos itself?

?You can do it?? Nick had long ago learned the secret to his father. The man needed a challenge, something complex to wrap his head around. Even now he could see the gears spinning in Kruger. The nod was a barely perceptible thing. It would be missed if you didn?t know how to look for it. What might seem a tick to some, that to abrupt closing of his eyes, and twitch of his chin meant something else to him. He?d already figured it out.

?Before we go any further, I?m going to tell you what I told? What I told Claire when these questions were asked before. I can do it, what I can?t do what I don?t believe is possible is to hide the fact that I?m doing it. You can?t tear holes and not have it be felt. At the time it was better to leave things as they were. What?s changed now?? Kruger?s breath was sucked in, Nick could see him holding it there. He wanted to tell Avy that the man was halfway decided already. He might have if he hadn?t felt like he?d been slapped by discovering only now that there had been a way to go back. One that he?d never been told about. He?d begged for the opportunity only to be told it wasn?t possible.

?Did you know this when you came here?? That wasn?t his real question, that sounded more like. Am I the only one who didn?t know? There was no blame for Averia, just an intense curiosity that needed to be extinguished.

There was a need to reach for the younger smith when he stepped closer, to anchor herself to something or someone solid and present. So much was fleeting, even in the here and now, that for the briefest of moments, a reprieve could have made all the difference. Though her fingers curled as if she might, she instead drew her hands back to cross her arms over her chest instead.

"She died. I felt it. It was only for a few minutes, but she was gone and if that's the case, we have bigger problems than punching holes in the threads of time. Those will heal but she's only mortal." Demi-deified as she was, Averia's mortality was a tenuous thing at best, easily avoided and extended far beyond the span of even the most long lived humans. But that wasn?t the subject at hand, not with Addie in a far off time and place in conditions that Averia couldn?t verify for the sake of her own sanity. Niko?s tone stung, as if accusing them both of hiding things from him when it couldn?t have been further from the case.

?Niko? Nick? there are always ways to do it, it?s just a matter of the cost. What we lose when we do these sorts of things? it can be steep.? Though she may not have been quite an adult, there was an intrinsic wisdom in her words and the regretful look she bestowed upon him. It was then that she extended a hand, reaching for his wrist with a brush of her fingers. Briefly, fleeting, much like everything else was. She dropped her hand soon after. ?I?m running out of time? please, can you do this for me??

?Come on Dad. You have to, and here?s why. You?re here, Aunt Claire?s here everyone is here now. Where?s Kane? Where?s Addie? Don?t you think? I mean shouldn?t they be here? How many times did you tell us that you?d never let anything happen? She?s not here, something happened, where were you?? Later Nick knew he?d feel guilty about that last comment. He knew because despite being angry at the secrets his father was keeping he could still feel the guilt pulling at him. It had come from him though, nerves steeled by something so simple as the needful brush of dainty fingers roughened by that bow strung over her shoulder.

The older man looked from Nick to Averia but said nothing. For what seemed like an hour he just stood there looking at her. Then all at once he started talking. ?I?m afraid I can?t help you Averia? because you were never here.? Just as quickly he had his gaze focused back on Nick. ?Hang the closed for illness in the family sign Nick. We have to go visit a sick cousin.?

Impeccably hard to rattle on the best of days, she still winced at the thinly veiled barb jabbed by son to father. After all, how many times had Claire repeatedly said that what happened was nobody?s fault? They couldn?t have predicted it, they couldn?t have stopped it. But now they had a choice in the matter and the old smith before her was the dwindling beacon of hope. He seemed so close to saying no and truthfully, in his shoes she wouldn?t have blamed him if he had. Surely he understood the cost that she spoke of, of the potential for all that could go wrong. Just thinking about it almost had her wanting to backtrack, to take it all back and implore them both to stay. That she would find another way to fix things. But at last Kruger caved and her elation quickly overwrote any sort of hesitation that might have held her back.

?I wasn?t here,? she repeated, offering him a single nod. It quickly clicked just what he meant and it took everything she had to not spring forward to hug the old man. Instead she settled on the younger one, running right into him for the sort of tight hug that could crack someone?s back if they moved too much.

?Thank you.? Came the quiet murmur, soft words meant for both men but likely only loud enough to be heard by Nikolai?s shirt. When she let him go, she did so slowly, leaving him with parting words given only to him by way of a gentle mental knock, the offering left the doorstep of his consciousness for the taking. I?ve missed you terribly.

I?ve, I?ll. Missed, miss. The sentiment remained but she was out of time and if they didn?t hurry, Addie could be too.

Kruger had turned away, something that meant to him Averia was not there. He knew that his father saw her headlong rush into that hug. For once he was grateful to the man for acknowledging nothing of her presence. Instinct had Nick?s arms going around the young woman. One coarse hand smoothing the hair down the back of her head. He could feel that slight intrusion into his thoughts. It tickled, like spiderweb silk and remained fast in much the same way. The sensation was so innocuous that he wasn?t really sure if it were her or simply his wish for it to be. Either way Nick lowered his head and spoke into those light consuming tresses wondering not for the first time what else they drew into them. ?I?ll miss you too.?

Closed, Kruger stared at the sign a painful reminder of the last time it had been put into place. It had been six months, since the last time he?d used the thing. It had been lying that time too. There had been no mysterious illness, though at least that was closer to the truth this. The truth was harder for him to deal with, and he?d been unable to bear putting the word death on the thing. Seeing that sign again even now made his hands itch for vengeance that he?d sworn not to take. There were a number of ways to scratch those itches, the bottle had been the easiest, even that was gone from him now. He needed a clear head if he was going to do this, That had been half the reason for sending Nick out, to give himself time to sober. Avy had come and gone with claims of knowing the coordinates that they needed to take. Kruger hadn?t asked, calculating until the very end the man had let her go on purpose. That was the second half of the reason Nick wasn?t here now.

Avy?d had limited time, but that wasn?t really a factor to Kruger. Sure it made more sense for Nick to go see her than Kurger, for a brief moment he wondered what her mother would think when she saw him. They needed the information, but he just hoped that Nick would spend an hour or two with the girl. Maybe enough time for the alcohol in his system to go away, maybe enough time for his son to find a reason to change his mind about going along. As much as he wanted that to happen, he was just as sure that it wouldn?t. Nick would make the quick trip to Andrea Anderson?s place and drop a note in her mailbox asking her to cover their absence. Then he?d make a beeline towards the girl who?d set this all into motion, Avy had been the initial crack in the mountainside. Now it was just a matter of time before the rocks broke, destroying anything that stood before the landslide.

Kruger?s skin still tingled, his clouded thoughts making it almost impossible to tear his gaze away from the hated sign. ?I know I promised you, but this is different. If I don?t go, he?ll surely go on his own. I?ll die before I let that happen.? The words were enough to break whatever spell had been holding him. Perhaps it wasn?t a spell at all, but the need of the man to justify what he was doing to the one person he felt needed it. Kruger shouldered a bag of equipment. What needed to be done couldn?t be accomplished from this place. Not as easily at least, he moved away from the ship, out into the marketplace becoming just another face moving from point to point. Nick knew where to go, if he didn?t happen to make it before Kruger was ready the old man would leave him behind. ?Take your time Niko.?

---

Nick?s footsteps echoed through the vast expanse of the underground forge. Their presence announced his arrival to Kruger, an alarm that said only one thing. He hadn?t worked fast enough. Once he?d have been gone already, enforcing his desires on Nick by simply leaving the boy no choice in the matter. ?Sorry it took so long, I had a little trouble getting in to see her.?

Kruger looked up as Nick approached. He was still talking, rambling really, a state that the smith understood having been the victim of it himself under similar circumstances. ?I think her mom is suspicious. She kept giving me weird looks, she did ask about you though.?

Kruger let Nick go on, nodding his acknowledgement of Claire?s interest but saying nothing. ?It was hard to convince her that I was just there to see Avy. Once I did though, she wasn?t too keen to say goodbye.?

?She likes you, of course she didn?t want to say goodbye.? Kruger stood up from behind the anvil and placed a tuning fork into an amplifier attached to the top of it tapping it with the side of a metal chisel. Sound filled the chamber, which became engulfed in a low pinkish light as crystal conduits came to life with the fork?s vibrations. ?Almost got it.? He used the flat end to twist a tuning knob pushing the sound higher.

Eventually what had become two distinct tones melded into a single high note. ?That sounds like? Avy.? The lighting of the place changed as well, one by one conduits went dark until there was only one left, its brightness not quite enough to match what had been but it was close.

?Good ear.? Kruger pulled the tuning fork out of the amplifier and immediately sound and light ceased. ?Can you tell me who this is?? He moved to the bath and inserted the fork into another sound amplifier striking it again. Sound filled the air again, the tone lower, and perhaps a little harder than the previous one had been. ?You know you don?t have to go, I wouldn?t blame you if you were to walk out now, and run back to her.? He looked at his son seriously, hoping that he?d take the offer.

?That?s Addie?? It was hard for him to remember her voice, this sounded so much like her, but that other quality added to it was foreign to him. ?I know what you?re trying to do, but I gave my word. Besides, Avy?s some kind of royalty, I?m just a blacksmith. What purpose would I serve in a place like that??

Kruger nodded, it was Addie, the one that he remembered at least. She wasn?t what Nick remembered, everything had forced her to change. ?Your mother spent time in many such places. What makes you any different? Besides, I doubt that Avy cares about that. Claire might care, but it would never be because of that.?

?Mom was a courtesan??

?Shai is one of the smartest and most adaptable people I know. She did what needed doing, and that is exactly the purpose you would serve.? Kruger cut Nick off before he could finish.

?If that?s how you feel, what happened?? There were undertones of defensiveness in the younger man. He had the right to those in Kruger?s mind. He sighed, giving a small shrug to the question.

?I suppose the easiest way to put it is? I happened. There will be those who say I acted out of character. That it was very un-Kruger-like. These are people who only see the surface. Everything has a cost Niko. In my push to know more I have suffered many of those costs. Sometimes others have done so around me. To believe that my leaving is not within my character, people hold me to strange ideals ones that I can never live up to.?

?What about Annabeth? You stayed with her.? Nick?s tone held only curiosity. Had it held something more provocative Kruger never would have bothered with the answer.

?You?d die for Addie? You value her that much?? At Nick?s nod Kruger let out a heavy sigh. ?I understand, I would too. It?s something you do for those you hold dearest? but, it?s easy to find someone that you?d do that for. I have many. Finding someone to live for, someone who you will choose over that valiant death, no matter the cost? That?s a rare thing Nick. Something most of us realize too late. Who would you live for??

?You just called me Nick. You?ve never done that before.? Of all the things for him to seize on in that, This is the one that he gave voice to, and it made Kruger laugh.

?You have a right to choose what you want to be called. I did when I was younger than you are now. Hell Nick, Kruger isn?t even my real name, a fact that should be blatantly evident to anyone who takes the time to look.? It was an admission that very few knew about. Those that wondered never really bothered asking, probably because they knew it didn?t matter. ?My father?s father was a dwarf named Shattersword. You ever met one named Allen? I haven?t, but younger me needed a place to hide. I guess I just never found what it took to come out of that place.?

More secrets, and this one probably the longest held of his life. He could see how it affected Nick, maybe he?d done something right with him and there wouldn?t be those same needs from the young smith. Whatever Nick?s thoughts though, he jumped subjects. ?So, what are we doing here?? He looked around at the equipment that Kruger had attached to the pieces of the forge.

?Quantum entanglement. Something Avy said had me thinking of that, her ability to feel Addie?s death. I might have expected her to see it, there are things that I don?t know of course. It?s of less importance than knowing the family has a lot of abilities that aren?t general knowledge and let it be at that. Did she hug you again? Avy I mean?? Kruger curled his finger at Nick calling him closer. He looked closely at the shirt Nick wore then extracted one long and unnaturally dark hair from it. ?Entanglement of particles makes it so that when something happens to one, the other knows about it.? He held up the dark strand. ?This is our end, putting Addie on the other side, but information is easy. Creating a corridor is going to take power, more than just power because we need a gravitational source to bend our path to the right place. There?s a formula on the bench over there, go fill in the variables that Avy gave you.?

Nick let out a huge sigh. ?I know, you hate math, but do it right or this trip will go very wrong. I have a few more things to do to the equipment.? Satisfied that he?d given Nick the proper motivation, Kruger slid another tuning fork from his bag and wrapped the long hair about it in a loose spiral. In his head he could hear the numbers making that spiral up. Fn=Fn-1+Fn-2, ad infinitum.

?You said we need power, where will that be coming from? I think I know where the gravity is going to be supplied.? Something Nick hadn?t gotten from his father was the ability to stay in his own head. He needed to talk to get his work done. Not that Kruger hadn?t talked his way through his share of projects. The real difference would be that for those the smith had no one to talk to.

?I had a few ideas, but since you?re here, it would be easiest to come from you.? He looked up at Nick to gauge his reaction. ?I know, you barely feel like you have control over your gift. We don?t need you to do much, start the chain reaction is all. You?re much more in tune with the fire than I am. Further away from the other elements though. That will always be your challenge in the forge, compensating for the lack. It?s not impossible, eventually it will become second nature to you. Fire is a part of you Nick, just try to remember that fire wishes to consume everything, never realizing that by doing so it is killing itself.?

?Are you ready with that?? Nick didn?t respond verbally. Kruger saw the nod even with the other?s back to him. ?Okay, give me the settings and I?ll set the pendulum to moving.? Nick called off numbers for ventilation, moisture saturation, and heating intensities. With each variable, Kruger adjusted the forge to match. High over head the dome held an image of the night sky, it had altered though, becoming what the smith needed. It spread out to a point that it was a perfect double image. The universe as it is, and as it was displayed in full panoramic view. Kruger went to each amplifier and inserted a tuning fork. Saving the one he?d painstakingly wrapped for the anvil at the center of the forge.

?I?ll need Dark Heart now.? Kruger pointed to where the war hammer laid. Nick looked at it for a moment then shook his head.

?You know I can barely move that thing.? He knew, or he should have known. For the briefest of moments he?d forgotten that fact. Mildly embarrassed by the mistake he went and retrieved it himself.

?All right, start with the bath, and work your way around counter clockwise. Finish in the center. That?ll be my cue to begin.? It had been much as he?d suspected when Nick was born. He?d never understand the tie to the flame like the boy had, and the man would continue to.It offered him benefits as a smith, but there were drawbacks for every other element that he?d need to overcome.

Drawing on that strength of his, Nick set the water to heating, the process causing vibrations to travel through the container and into the tuning fork that had been placed. A process that pulled sound back into the forge and intensified with each stop he made on the circuit. Around them conduits were alive glowing brighter than any had in the tuning. Once Nick started the key element vibrating, key because it was the one most attuned to Avy and, by association Addie, a tunnel began to form. It twisted on itself counterclockwise an echo of the path Nick had taken, but its other end revealed nothing. Kruger waited for Nick to get close to him, then he lifted the war hammer and exposed the tunnel to the singularity within. Sound distorted, light was drawn towards them, and that tunnel they?d created bent like a piece of copper plumbing.

Kruger had no more eyes for Nick, he kept his focus on the dome overhead. It too changed, showing that wormhole as it bored its way through space and time to connect what, if the numbers were correct, could only be the Rhydins of then and now. The damage was done, the butcher?s bill would need to be paid. The moment the two were connected the hammer was sealed once more to the black hole within.

?That should?? A sound in the distance halted Kruger?s words. Stone and metal broke under a barrage of vast strength. Where the door once stood, a gaping hole now was and from it came men and women shrieking cries to some god that Kruger had never heard of. Nick was reacting to it faster than he was, shocked at not having felt anything happening. He?d been concentrating too hard, or maybe that haze he?d been keeping himself in had other effects on him as well. That hesitation was gone now, Kruger?s hands caught hold of Nick lifting him as easily as the hammer and throwing him forcefully through the opening. ?I?ll catch up!?

Kruger went to the stairs leading from the top of the pedestal and started down it. If they wanted him, they?d have to climb the spiral staircase. He would have the high ground and their numbers would be of no use to them. Faceless, he wished to remember none of their features as that heavy hammer impacted head and body ruining everything that it touched with a spaghettification of body parts. He couldn?t stop his mouth from opening, and words coming from it. That thing he?d done for so long was necessary now if he had any hope to get through this. His own voice lifting kept their screams from testing his nerve. Where ever that hammer fell things died, it was the nature of the beast. But it was also more than that, now he felt what was happening. The men coming at him, that was the distraction. On the platform above a portal opened. Three very large robed figures stood by the broken doorway, one of them was casting, the other two were stepping from there to the platform above.

Horror struck his face as the dawning came to him. He?d been too quick to react, suckered in like an amateur. Now all he could do was turn and run towards the newest, and greatest threat. He bowled in to the first one?s side as he stepped through, but beneath that robe was not flesh and blood. Armor greeted his shoulder, and he was pierced in a half dozen places by thorns made invisible by the robe. Kruger pushed through the pain, blood ran purple down his arm and torso, but the bigger man was giving ground. A final mighty shove sent him over the edge, he barely had time to note the glow on the back of the man?s hand as he fell from the platform ninety meters to the floor.

The fight, brief as it was had taken too long. The second of them was out, and Kruger could see more of the less armored zealots bleeding into the opening and heading for that portal to the top. When in doubt run, live to fight another day. Kruger bent his knees and exploded in the direction of the gateway and Nick. He passed by the slow moving warrior, slowing only slightly to reach out and grab hold of the tuning fork attached to the anvil. He pushed even harder toward that now closing gateway. Nearly there, he readied to leap into the thing, but his legs no longer worked. The world had turned dark, for some reason that made him giggle, then there was nothing.

To say that Nick?s thoughts were split would have been an understatement. He began to understand the power of chaos on an individual as his mind flitted from one thing to another and another. He stood before that complex formula inserting the variables that Avy had given him. Avy, he?d been so angry when he?d seen her, furious that the house guards had detained him for so long. They?d searched his body, and his story for too long before announcing even his presence, and that was to Claire. This of course only made him mad at himself for having to tell her only the barest amount of truth. Lies, that was really at the core of his mood. They?d begun long ago, only to be revealed now. He?d gone there angry, and everything else had just made his mood sour more.

Avy, he should have been angry with her to. He had been at first because he hated lying to Aunt Claire. She wasn?t his real aunt, and Avy certainly no cousin to him. There had just been a lot of times growing up that he?d been under her care making it impossible for him to see her without bestowing that title. Not telling the truth hurt regardless of the need or reason. He never wanted to become practiced at it. He was finally allowed to see Avy, led through a place that he knew he had no right to be to see someone that he likely never should have known. Nick didn?t belong here, and that feeling he realized was the real reason he?d let everything else get to him.

They?d made small talk until being able to put as much distance between them and any listening ears. Avy, the girl had his head in knots with how well she seemed to understand him. That only made Nick feel simple. She?d made no apologies to him, they both understood why things were happening as they were. Instead she gave him sympathy in her words and in her light handed touch. Funny how something so tiny could still be felt on his skin. How did girls do that anyway? Before he was able to wrap his head around that question, she managed to just confuse his thoughts more. She gave him the information he?d come to get, but wouldn?t let him leave with it. She didn?t want him to leave, or say goodbye. Strange since that was exactly what she?d asked for earlier. He lingered, because it was hard to figure out a way to break free of an embrace that wouldn?t end up hurting. He waited, because part of him liked the way it felt to have her like that. Time was cruel though, weighing on the fleeting moments.

Even though he?d been gentle in his insistence that it was time to go, he was certain she was trying not to cry. What did she want from him? She couldn?t have both, he?d given his word even if he did feel bad about leaving her that way. Sometimes the only way out of a maelstrom was to run hard, and Nick had, from New Haven to where the Old Market bordered Seaside. It hadn?t helped, The conversation with his father had at least slowed the rotation some. That was barely enough to concentrate on the formula. Putting it into practice had done the trick. Once he?d made it around the forge, and the tunnel had torn open there was nothing but the job at hand.

Nick had only a moment to marvel at the opening once the exit had latched onto its exit point. Two things happened that he?d never seen before. The first was a doorway that had never been breached exploded, the second was his father caught completely unaware. It had startled Nick too, but he was the first to move. There were plenty of tools that could be turned into weapons on the platform that topped the pedestal. He started towards them when the floor disappeared beneath his feet. His father was strong, no one would deny that fact, especially Nick who?d seen him easily lift Dark Heart, a hammer that he could barely move. Before he was aware of what was happening his father had launched him through the portal and a dozen feet beyond to land in a pile on the other side.

I?ll catch up! He was still scrambling to rise when his father tore into the front ranks of the soldiers ascending the stairs, shouting a song he?d often heard the man sing when he still fought for sport. Somebody mixed my medicine, it had been funny once now it seemed like a cry of desperation and more anger than he?d ever known the man to show. Nick called a warning as a second portal appeared on the platform. Whether or not that was heard he didn?t know, but his father had abandoned the fight on the stairs and met the figure appearing through the doorway with a blow that he?d seen drop men much larger. The robed figure barely moved. Nick knew his father needed help the moment he?d seen it, even as the figure fell from the precipice he was coming back to the tunnel they?d created determined to keep the second massive figure from getting to the opening in space and time. His father had elected to run, perhaps realizing that Nick was coming, or that there was no way to win alone with attackers on two fronts. He reached for the man who looked to have outpaced the lumbering giant, his father?s face wore the grin that so often meant he knew he was going to win. The portal was closing, but Nick was sure he could grab an arm and pull him to safety. Surprise washed over the old man?s face, culminated by a last laugh as a massive sword hit him in the shoulder and drove at a downward angle that tore through flesh and bone, not stopping until it reached the man?s navel. Nick had enough time before the tunnel collapsed to see the light die in his father?s eyes. Violence followed that closing, an outward shock wave that lifted Nick from his feet and sent him sprawling once more.

?Nooo!? Nick felt blood smearing into his hair as he leaped up and ran to the place the portal had been. There was nothing left of it, just the intangible air. ?Stupid old man? why? Why won?t you ever let me help you?!?

Early August 2016

Annabeth stepped across the threshold from the main room housing the Forge. She'd been here twice since the first time Kruger had brought her, so she knew her way by now. She glanced around, doubting she'd ever really get used to everything down here, but more importantly not seeing Kruger. "I guess he's further down." She'd called to him, but in this labyrinth who knows if he'd hear her. She found herself stopping and watching the stairs where they'd sat and talked. Smiling a bit to herself before ascending up the long spiraling corridor that led out..

A gasp escaped Nick as he heard Annabeth's approach. He stayed very still trying to determine what direction she might be coming from. This place played with sound, or maybe he was still hearing the drone of the tunnel in his ears. He hoped that would go away soon. He determined to try and find a hiding place. He wasn't supposed to be here now or at least not seeing anyone. Or had Kruger done it again and arranged to be here when he knew Annabeth was supposed to show up? One last look at her. That seemed like him.

She looked up at the gasp, and frowned. "Who's there?" She put her hand on the Walther holstered at her waist, and moved toward the exit where she heard the sound.

Somehow no matter where he'd hidden growing up, she'd always managed to find him.If he'd been thinking straight he might have found that suspicious. Right now it was all Nick could do to find a name that wasn't his that he was comfortable with. "It's just... No one. I'm leaving." Maybe no name was even better, get away and leave it as an oddity in the night.

"I don't think so. You're going to come out here where I can see you. And you're going to give me some sort of name." The Walter was in her hand and clear of the holster now.

Nick had no weapons, no armor to speak of, just a set of dirty clothes and blood slowly running from his scalp, and matting down his hair. Crunch time, lie or tell the truth? Why was the decision so hard anyway? He stepped into sight, palms facing Annabeth. "Alex... I'm Alex." His brain had suddenly locked on to Avy's brother for some reason, the name spilling from him like a waterfall.

She almost looked a little disappointed for a moment but then nodded. The gun wasn't put away, yet. "All right, Alex. So tell me what you're doing here. And why don't you come down here so you we don't have to project so much." In an aside almost to herself, "Do 'nuf of that on stage."

Nick's eyes went round as saucers at the suggestion of moving into that tunnel. He wasn't supposed to be here, but even that had very little to do with the absolute horror he would experience if he did. Just the thought of what happened moistened his eye and forced him to pull his lips into his mouth. He shook his head giving her a pleading look not to force that. "I... I just need to go. Please?"

"Then you shouldn't of come down here." Her accent deliberately slipped in. Would you argue with a hillbilly with a gun?

"I didn't mean to, I don't want to be here. I'm not sure how I got here." none of those statements was exactly a lie if taken in the right context. Where had that subtlety come from? He began to wonder if this too were inherited from his father. "Can you... help me get out of here?"

"I can if you come down here and talk to me, Alex." The way she said it indicated that she didn't exactly believe that that was his name, but she'd use it for now.

"I'm sorry, Annabeth... I just can't. I gotta go." He understood now the what and the why. "I miss you." The last was barely said as Nick turned from her and ran.

She blinked and watched him go. He knew her name, and his voice sounded very familiar. She holstered the weapon, and once she was sure he wasn't coming back went in search of Kruger.

--------

Nick had to go, the plan had been not to interact with anyone that wasn?t truly necessary. Where had Annabeth come from? More importantly was the question in Nick?s mind asking if he thought that his father had planned for her to be there, needing perhaps to see her once more whole and healthy. It would be like the man to do something like that. He wasn?t sure if he held that against him now or not. Whatever the reason, that meeting never would happen now. Nick pushed himself to keep moving forward, they?d had a plan, a place that his father said would be safe for them. The disrepair of this area was both a surprise, and a welcome sight. In the intervening years the city?s population had grown, all of these abandoned buildings had long since been cleared away, replaced by new dwellings occupied by families. The place in question, Aunt Raye?s loomed largely before him. How long since he?d played here with Raye affectionately calling him a snotnose? There was affection in it even if she really did feel that way. When he?d gotten older, she?d given him the secret of getting in without triggering the many traps that she?d installed.

Nick couldn?t help but hesitate, could he do it now? Was it still the same? He couldn?t stop his hands from shaking, unable to deal with the events that left him alone in a time when he knew no one. That wasn?t exactly true. He knew many people, it was they who wouldn?t know him. He didn?t use the front gate, only assassins used the front gate in order to lull their victims into a false sense of security. Aunt Raye could be complicated. Instead he vaulted the fence, making sure to keep his hand placements at specific points to avoid the triggers she?d had installed there. Then it was a game of hopscotch along the walkway. He could only use his tip toes as this game had been set up for the stiletto heels Raye favored. There were no points at which Nick could put both feet down, an agility test that was unfair in his estimation considering the innate grace the elfess possessed. That at least brought him to the porch, a sucker?s trap meant for the unwary.

He put his foot on the railing, and sang the song taught to him by Raye. What was it with his family and singing things anyway? ?Niko Niko, bo biko banana fanna fo fiko, Fee Fi Fo Miko, Niko.? It was silly, and maybe that was the point, who in their right mind would guess that the key to getting in would be something so? Raye? He continued to climb, hands going to the places that Raye had drilled into him, while making certain to reach the window by the time he?d gotten to. ?And then I say the name again with an M this time, and there isn't any name that I can't rhyme.?

Getting into the window required something else, another code, that was only an improvement because he didn?t have to sing it. Nick leaned in and spoke to the lock. ?Freddy Mercury has a nice ass.? He had no idea who Freddy Mercury was, or if he really did have a nice ass. None of that really mattered since it was the only way in. The lock snapped and the window opened on its own allowing Nick access to the inner sanctum.

Nick laid on the floor, a fetal ball immune to the moments of time that were slowly ticking by. Five minutes turned into half an hour which almost as quickly turned into three hours and he didn?t move. He lay there, head on the floor staring in the direction of a closed door that he knew to be Rayvinn?s bedroom. He wanted her to come out and catch him, to kill him or clutch him close, but there was no movement in the place. His father had said she might not be there. Raye was unpredictable in her comings and goings. He dragged himself to the bathroom, stripping away his clothes and immersing himself in hot water spewed forth from the shower head. Had they found his father yet? What would happen to Avy? ... there are always ways to do it, it?s just a matter of the cost. What we lose when we do these sorts of things? it can be steep. Avy?s words came back to him and for a brief moment he felt he should be there with her. Selfish thinking, He was needed where he was. ?Where the hell are you Addie?? Would she hate him for what happened? Better to have her cleave his heart in two.

Rhydin, 2033

?Seeker, Alpha Orionis has isolated the harmonic disturbances, but they?ve encountered a problem. They are unable to gain entry into whatever chamber the event is taking place.? Mordeith, Redeemer of Man, Seeker of The Chosen looked across the chamber to the scrying bowl where the speaker stood, even hooded her voice gave her away, the only female to have risen to such a vaunted position as seer.

?You?re sure it?s what we?re looking for?? It wasn?t that he doubted any of them, but there had been so many attempts to find the girl that had turned out to be little more than some small plot or another by the more chaotic dwellers of the city.

?We?ve never had a reading this close sir.? Mordeith crossed to the bowl and looked to the wave patterns that. To most they?d look like nothing more than ripples in a vat of water. To those who could see however, every wave was distinct. So many wrong roads had been taken, but could he chance not following this one just because it might not be correct?

?Have them make a portal for me.? Even as he said the words the thing was forming and he was stepping through to face a doorway that was the possessor of immense warding. This was not like the other places they?d cast their nets. He could tell they were buried deep under ground. He drew in as much power as he was able, and placed his palm against the door releasing it in one tremendous burst. The door didn?t so much as move on its hinges, but the frame itself blew out of the surrounding walls leaving a gap that the members of the Orion Order?s first company poured through like sand through a sieve.

A pair of full Omega order battle mages followed them. It had been Mordeith who?d opened the portal to the high platform, though what had happened up there in the darkness was impossible to tell. Even now as he stepped over the broken remnants of a full forge there was difficulty in seeing everything that had gone on.

?Losses?? His question fell on the seeress who had joined him.

?Twenty initiates, two battle mages. The first down there.? Even with the woman?s hood up he could tell that she was looking over the edge. ?The second was cut in half by his own blade when the portal collapsed on itself.?

Mordeith knelt down by the body of Kruger looked at it for a moment then looked back up. ?And this??

?A smith I think, has a shop in the marketplace. He was the one who did all the damage with that.? A robed arm rose, delicate finger pointing to the place on the floor where Dark Heart had landed. It?s pulsing handle drew Mordeith?s eyes to it almost jealously.

?Have the weapon taken to my sanctum. And have that?? His finger touched Kruger?s forehead directly in the center. ?...dragged outside and marked so that whomever sent him will know we got here first and that we will find her first.?

?With respect Seeker, attempts have been made to move the weapon, but it refuses to budge.? A pair of initiates, grabbing the body by the ankles and dragging it towards the portal. For the first time Mordeith noticed the man?s hand was closed around something.

?Wait!? The pair of them stopped on command. Mordeith knelt over what was left of the smith and tried to pull the object free. The hand refused to let go. ?You! Remove its fingers.?

A third initiate rushed over, pulling a dagger free from his belt and cutting digits from the hand one at a time until the object fell free. He bent to grasp what looked to be an ordinary tuning fork, at least until he noticed that looped around it was a single thread of something. ?Beware of clever men Lansia. Grab anything else of interest, and find a way to get that weapon out of her. I don?t care if you have to bring the floor along with it.?

Mordeith left Lansia to do her work, taking the portal back to the opening just as the body of Kruger was being dragged beyond the threshold. A rumbling began to rise from the place. Atop the platform items disappeared as though they?d never even been there. Above the dome crumbled and fell. Mordeith saw none of this, he was hurrying up the winding path trying to escape the destruction that was happening below. Once he was free, his eyes discovered the extent of the destruction. A massive crater had formed where the underground chamber once was. Lansia, and much of Alpha Orionis had been buried beneath the rubble.

Anger consumed him. He produced a hand that bore a glowing mark that looked like a dragon?s claw within a winged circle. He placed his palm on the torn torso of the smith, and smoke appeared. Where his palm had been a brand appeared identical to the one on the back of his hand, though it did not glow. Scorched across his chest was a message for those who knew what to look for.

It shall be then, when the dead walk once more, the Order shall bring forth a rise of a new god and a blessed age.

It would be up to him to convey to the High Mages, Koviah Bane how he?d lost so many men in chasing down a single lead. Mordeith?s teeth ground together as he stood looking at the body before him. ?Have I told you that I hate clever men? Especially would-be Rhydinian heroes.? He passed a gate over Kruger that deposited the body in the very center of the crater. One initiate approached him with a notebook in hand and showed Mordeith the page it was opened to and the complex algorithm that it contained. ?Maybe too clever for your own good.? The two items combined might make up for the loss, provided they led to The Chosen

Rhydin, September 7th, 2016

Mid-fight he arrived, quiet, inconspicuous. Addie didn?t even notice, so busy dueling that his arrival went unmarked until a call from the crowd drew her attention. It was only by coincidence that her gaze panned across a familiar face that hadn?t been there before. He had made his way inside in a pair of torn jeans and a borrowed belt along with an ill fitting t-shirt in black that read Break all the rules. Apt. The red Converse squeaked as he sat to watch but it took her almost ten minutes to realize he was there and even then she couldn?t believe her eyes.

"That your boyfriend? He?s a looker."

"Wh-what... no. I... I think I'm hallucinating."

I'm pretty sure I can see him.."

"Graceful as ever." The words barely audible over his arms. "You gonna do something up there Addie?"

"Then it's someone who looks like someone else and Rhydin's just ****ing with me." From the ring she couldn't quite hear Nick even though it looked like he might be speaking.

"So he's not your boyfriend?"

She pulled back at the last moment and gave KC plenty of time to crack her one more time. That was going to leave a mark. But she seemed undaunted and threw a vague salute to KC and Kheldar back. "Thanks yo." Then she was stumbling over the ring's ropes before setting off at a dead run for Nick. Watch out, Hurricane Adelaide was about to make landfall regardless of the fact he was sitting. "NIK-NAK!"

If he didn't watch out, she was going to run right into him.

"Looks like she's too busy getting her face busted up." This said to Cyrus as he picked his head up. "That ain't the way to finish things out..." Damn... Nick's bracing for the inevitable collision of Hurricane Adelaide. "Lady!!" He finds a smile, it isn't easy, but it's there.

"Ohmygodisitreallyyou?!" The words came out so quickly that they were almost impossible to make out but she was intent on throwing herself at him for the biggest of hugs.

"Wouldanyoneelsebesittingherelookinglikeme?" He managed to stand in time to catch her and the hug, returning it with possible the tightest squeeze he'd ever managed. "You're all right? I've been worried! Where the hell have you been?" Too much to say and not giving her time to answer anything. "Weeks... It's been weeks! I finally spotted you last night but..." He trailed off with a sigh just enjoying the hugs.

"It's Rhydin! Yes!" She said instantly, still in disbelief that he was there. Tangible, she could touch him even! It was the sort of hug that could realign your back if you did it right but she wasn't going to let go even once he answered. "I've been super busy with life and stuff, you know... it's been, well, it's a long story. But you're here! Ohmygod you're here. Wait. If you're here..." She pulled back just slightly, her hands still touching his upper arms. "Why?"

He actually managed a laugh, it was the first in a long time. He lowered his head until his lips were touching hair and spoke softly. "That's something you need to tell me, that and where the hell Kane is. Shouldn't he be here protecting that ass of yours? I know what happened to you... Some of it. You know you can't hide stuff like that from her."

There was a flicker of conflict across her expression, her gaze tipping side to side, tick-tock. Her hand touched to the hollow of her throat as if to grab a pendant that wasn't there. "I... he's... it's... it's complicated." She began, her teeth worrying at her bottom lip. "That little bitch..." It was an affectionate term even if she was quite perturbed with her god-sister at the moment. "So she sent you to come check on me?"

"Last hope I guess, probably for good reason." It was said flatly, allowing no room for debate on the matter. "And you shouldn't call her that... She's worried, I've been worried, for too long." He might have gotten defensive with Addie, but it disappeared just as quickly.

She blinked slowly before her eyes widened for her to stare at him. Speaking vaguely as he was could have meant so many different things but each one was worse than the one before and her mouth went dry. Addie licked her lips and looked up at him, searching his expression for some kind of a hint. "I can take care of myself." She said softly, as if it would soothe his worries. As an afterthought, she added, "You got taller."

"You can take care of... Not if that up there was an indicator." She wanted to change subjects on him, once he wouldn't even have noticed. "I got taller. Taller than you. You should be home tho..." Nick stopped mid sentence. "No, no stay here Addie Don't try to go back, not yet." He swallowed, and bit the inside of his lip as hard as he could stand.

Addie rolled her eyes. "That was a duel. They're totally different from real fights." Not as though the girl had ever been the fighting sort to begin with. "Took you long enough to pass me up." She'd hit her growth spurt at the unfortunate age of fourteen and left most of the boys in the dust. But the good natured teasing gave way to a studious frown. "Nick, what's going on? Let's go talk, you can tell me about it and it'll be okay, okay?" Reluctantly she stepped away from him, intent on getting her messenger bag from the bar.

"You've seen my father, I'm lucky I passed you at all." The words were forced, as was the chuckle. He looked around the Outback then nodded. "I'd like that, the talking, but everything isn't going to be all right. Nothing is really going to be all right for a while." His eyes squinted slightly, he had so much to say, but couldn't seem to find his voice. Not here... not sober either. "There someplace we can be anonymous?"

"This is true." She conceded with a fond smile. Though they were the only ones aside from Kheldar, she understood the need for a more private setting to catch up on what she had missed. Everything wasn't going to be all right, that had her heart hammering and for a moment, she really, really wanted something strong. "I know a place. C'mon." She grabbed for his hand once she had her bag over her shoulder, ready to drag him for the exit. "Bye Kheldar! Have a good night!"

He had brought nothing that didn't fit in his pockets, so Nick waited for Addie to be ready, hands in pockets he followed her to the door and out. "I've lived here all my life but this city... now is just crazy." He sent a small wave to Kheldar as the door was closing.

The walk from far east Dragon?s Gate to Dockside was a mostly quiet one if only for the need of space between them and anyone that might listen to their quiet conversation.

?No, Avy and Alex are both okay, or they were last I saw either of them." That had him licking his lips and looking over his shoulder for about the hundredth time since they'd started walking. "How much further is this place? There gonna be any ID's needed because I don't think mine would count."

"Almost there."She was mostly quiet for most of the walk from the Outback but sure enough, she led the way down this street and that until they reached the very edge of where Dockside met Old Temple.Set amidst a row of derelict brick buildings, the mostly empty coffee shop was lit by dim neon and flickering fluorescence within. With practiced ease,Addie pushed the door open, eliciting a chime of bells and prompting a tired looking shopkeep to make an appearance from a back room. "No ID needed."

"Besides, you asked for anonymity. Here we go." The man behind the counter cared not about who stood in his shop so long as they ordered quickly and paid him before going on their way. There was only a table or two inside, framed by aging and mismatched chairs, but outside, wrought iron tables sat bolted to the ground at regular intervals, umbrellas folded for the night but meant for patrons of the cafe just the same.

"Kind of outta the way, but that's probably a good thing. I don't want to be in the places I do know." He checked the shop keeper, scrutinizing gaze going from him to the rest of the coffee shop noting exits and looking for security camera's. "So what's good in here?" He shoved a hand into his pocket and pulled free a handful of wadded bills that he'd managed to lift here and there on his way to the Outback. "I'm not sure where to begin with all of this, probably with Avy. Everything seems to begin there anyway." He honestly had no intention of adding that last part, but he'd been by himself a lot since getting here, and it was easy to forget that
other people could hear him too now.

"It's better this way, trust me." She nodded faintly then looked to the keeper behind the counter who looked less than amused at the duo. "Pair of black Irish, make it strong. Please." With an order, the shopkeep set into motion while Addie set a hand over Nick's handful of bills. From a thick money clip in her pocket, she peeled a few crisp notes and set them on the counter. It would only take a few minutes for two steaming cups of Jameson doctored coffee to be set before them. "Let's sit outside, we can talk more." Taking her own cup, she led the way to the the table outside further from the door, half drenched in shadows thanks to a streetlight lacking a bulb. "What's that mean anyways? Everything seems to begin there anyway?"

He took up his cup, eyeing the money clip, then her. He said nothing. This wasn't about money, or where it came from, though he was sure there was a story behind it. He lifted his chin to the clerk in thanks, mumbling it out as well before following after Addie. It was almost like being kids again. He slid into a chair, peering quickly out the window as though he expected to see something, or someone. "Hunh? Well, I mean doesn't it?" He shrugged noncommittally. "She's different now, you're... different now too. I'm just trying to play catch up." He blew across the coffee before taking a test sip for temperature more than anything else. Once he had that determined the cup was tilted further. "Later on that, because we have a lot to cover I think." Another look around, then down to his cup to put thoughts in order. "So, give or take, about a month ago I'm working in my dad's shop, just bitching at him... I probably shouldn't have done that... But yeah, it's late, and in walks Avy," That actually had the corner of his mouth twitching. "She's kind of out of breath, like she'd run all the way... which she had I guess. But she gives me and...us a story about needing to check on you. Her mom won't let her go, won't send no one. She decided to ask us to come and check things. I was up for it, but dad took some convincing... You know how he gets. Never did get how you always got him to do stuff, but anyway she threw down the *I felt her die* line, and I could see the old man caving." He paused to take another , longer drink this time, keeping his eyes on his hands and not continuing for several moments. "Ya ever notice how easy it is for people to leave you in the dark?"

It really was like being kids again, wasn't it? Only this time, she got to be the big kid and pay for things. Maybe she was trying to prove that she had it all together and could look out for herself, especially if Averia had seen fit to send Nick after her to check up on her. With a little more quiet afforded by the hour and the location, she sat down and set her messenger bag on the ground by her feet. While sipping at her over-hot spiked coffee, she quietly listened. Averia knew. Averia knew it all. It became hard to swallow again but she forced down another mouthful of hot liquid. Aunt Claire hadn't seen it fit to send anyone after her even when Averia felt something was wrong. She didn't know how to take it. That Averia had resulted to such desperate measures meant that it had to have been serious. That she would send Nikolai of all people, Addie didn't understand it. Surely he would have been the last person she wanted to go anywhere. "Your dad's a good man, Nick, he means well, really." She said softly, licking her lips as if it would relieve her of the desert state that had taken hold of her tongue. Softly she nodded her understanding. "All too well, actually."

"Yeah well, I was mad. I guess I sade some things I shouldn't have. I might've said that it was all his fault. It occurred to me that even if you'd stayed, there would be some trace of you. Something, anything, but the cryptic answers that we had gotten finally clicked and something did happen to you, because you ain't there Addie. Not even some knockout older you." Nick's thumb traced the crease between the table and the outer plastic guard around its edge. So dad he just flat out agrees, but sends Avy away. She didn't have a lot of time, and I'm not so sure she managed to get back before she was noticed. Might be why I had so many problems getting to see her. She was the one that gave us the when. I wonder what she's doin' now." He looked up from his musings of the table to Addie, brows falling slightly. "I was right though, dad had a formula all mapped out. You know how crazy he would go over those things. I swear he was a mad scientist." He hadn't said it, that was about as close as he could come. Nick turned his face from Addie, snapping his eyelids closed and hoping she didn't notice how wet his eyelashes had suddenly become. "But... Yeah we opened a gate, tore our little hole in the universe, and I'm here." He was leaving things out. The things he wasn't sure how to say without becoming useless.

?It wasn't his fault..." Her mouth opened and shut a few times, she wasn't exactly sure what to say to that. Any of it, as a matter of fact. That Averia had been tactful enough to not only escape her mother's watchful eye but to get so far as Kruger's Exotic to give the men everything they needed to get Nick here, well, that didn't surprise her as much. "You know the Lucians are super uptight asshats. You're a boy, trying to see their future Queen." Explaining away the difficulty he had with a wave of her hand and another sip from her coffee. The whiskey helped mellow her, keeping her from a full scale freak out like she wanted to have. Her gaze was watchful but she politely looked away when he turned away. Though they'd known each other all of their lives, there was still something slightly uncomfortable about seeing someone like that so unsteady. "Okay. So you're here. And that's the tee-ell-dee-are version obvs. Now that you're here, what? Are we going back? Are they coming here? Or now that you know I'm okay are you leaving me too?" Too. Like Kane had. She didn't say that though she wanted to, badly.

Nick's head moved back and forth to all of her questions. "I don't think anyone's coming. I don't think I'm done here, Averia was saying something... she's as confusing sometimes as he was. Temporal divergence. Something that wasn't supposed to be? Besides, I can't get back, I don't know how. I wouldn't take you back now anyway, even if I thought you wanted to go. I mean... Do you?" Two years is a long time and he'd have thought she'd have done so already. At least if it were what she wanted. But maybe there was more for her to do. "I'm not even sure what you're doing here. Why did you leave?" Nick left off the part that was in his head right now,
me behind. He kept his gaze fixed on Addie. "And just who the hell is after you?"

**** . She messed something up, she just knew it. She knew it the moment her parents split before they were supposed to. The dominoes were falling one by one and now Nick was here and, her hand tightened around her cup, her breathing quickening like her anxiety might spill over into a panic attack. The deep blue of her eyes was wide, her slitted pupils dilated to take him in fully. "I... I didn't think we could go back. Kane never found a way and we didn't know what it was we were supposed to be doing to fix what happened anyways." She took a breath to steady herself, tilting back in her seat to stare up at the Dockside sky, overcast and muggy as it was. "I had to go, Nick. I didn't have a choice. They shut Nosgoth away... away from everything, we couldn't contact Rhydin or Lucis or anyone that could help. I, um," she had to pause, collecting her words one by one until they fit together in an explanation that simultaneously answered his question while likely bringing more questions to light. "They took me away at one point... held me for months, but Kane and my grandfather and my uncle saved me. They were all that was left and Ghallon sent Kane and I back here... to fix it. To save them all... but if you're here... that means I haven't been successful yet, have I?"

"I don't know, I wish I did. Aunt Claire doesn't talk about it, at least not to me. I'm not sure when the last time she was in Lucis, or why she stays away. I guess I don't even know what things are supposed to be, because I thought they were as they should be." He took another drink, the time double talk was starting to give him a headache. The massive guys with the glowing tattoos... That's the **** who held you ain't it? You seen any of em? Know where I can find em?" Nick was driving his fingernails into his palm, barely able to contain the wave of rage that was building inside of him. Inside his cup the liquid began to boil. He pushed it aside, and pulled his hands from the table."No... there'll be time for that. Kane's gone... just gone? Maybe that's why I'm here then. Avy didn't tell me what I needed to do, just check on you."

She winced faintly. Addie knew just why Claire stayed away from Lucis, or had until Nosgoth was shut away from the rest of the Nexus. But that wasn't her story to tell so she dropped her chin and peered down into her cup. It didn't have nearly enough whiskey for this conversation. His mention of the men with the glowing ink had her gaze snapping up to stare at him, the terror readily evident in her expression. "Y-yes. Oh gods, they're not here are they? I haven't... no, please don't tell me they're here." He was fury but she was fear. She set her cup down and reached for his nearest hand, an attempt to steady them both when all she wanted to do was run. Kane wasn't there to reassure her or to "protect her ass" as Nick had so eloquently phrased it before and so she was stuck working through the horror on her own. "He... he's around town somewhere, I think. I don't know where, maybe staying at the Red Dragon. But... but I broke up with him," she winced again. That wasn't supposed to come out that way. Quickly she back pedaled. "I mean, um, after I turned eighteen, he wasn't bound to me anymore. I let him go and he went."

His fingers opened slowly for her, curling around hers. "I'm sorry, how long has it been since... he was set free." He could sympathize with her, some things, some people were exceedingly confusing. "I don't know if they are here or not. I know that no sooner did we manage to open the tunnel than the forge was hit. I'm not supposed to be alone here Addie. My father he made me go through, he... He's gone, and that's why I don't have a way back for us. But we'll figure this out, and if I see Kane, he'll hear some things from me too. Regardless of anything, you're my priority. I made a promise to Avy." Even if it felt like she might want him to take it back in the end. I've been keeping my eyes open for anyone that looks like what I saw, but it's a big city."

Her teeth worried at her bottom lip, releasing only for her tip her cup back and swallow down the rest of the contents. It had gone cold by now but failed to cool her perpetually feverish temperature. Her shoulders sank with the news that Kruger hadn't made it through and likely hadn't made it at all. More and more her elation at finding Nick here was chipped away by the realization that the reason why was no cause for celebration. "You aren't alone here now. You have me. And we'll figure this out, you're right." Abruptly she stood up, stooping only momentarily to retrieve her messenger bag. "We'll get you back to her too." With a nod she looked over her shoulder. "Where're you staying? You wanna come crash at my place tonight? I promise my roommate is only a little weird."

"Aunt Raye's place, it's empty, well of her that is." He was glad he'd gotten it out at last, though he had the sense to look innocent when Addie decided to mention getting him back to her. "Don't act like you know me." It was said with a small laugh, because even now it seemed like she did. "Yeah, company sounds better than silence." He pushed away from the table. Is this gonna be just a short distance like the last short distance? Because I might need to get a new pair of shoes." He offered his hand to her, needing the contact probably as much as she had earlier.

She cut him a knowing look that said she wouldn't say more on the Avy subject unless he brought it up first. Cupping her hand with his, she took him away from the Dockside coffee shop and back through Old Temple, intent on the bridge that connected the south and the north so they could then veer west for the coast again. Really she should get a car with all that money she was making. "Quit being a baby, the city isn't -that- big. It's just up in Seaside." Way north, up near Battlefield Park of course but she didn't tell him that. He could find out when they got there. Hand in hand, she led the way.

Rhydin, August 15th, 2016

There were no wise moves for Nick, waiting in the alleyway behind Silverblood Lines lingerie shop was dangerous enough. Every alleyway in this city had its toughs that frequented it. On the other hand, breaking into the access elevator to the apartment above was quite possibly more so. A catch twenty two no matter how he sliced it, but at least he was confident about his ability to defend himself against alley creepers. Something more arcane, that could be suicide and Nick had a job to do and a girl to get home to. That should have meant that he'd remain vigilant enough to stay awake, but really how many hours could he go without proper sleep. He'd only sat down to rest for a moment, but the weariness had chosen that moment to overcome him. At least if the lift door opened it would wake him, though it would leave him sprawled on the floor of the cabin, half in half out and the perfect victim for the guillotine doors to make his life a little less comfortable.

SkipSkipSkip, Camellia, although approaching her 20th, did not act much like a 20 year old. She was skipping along the paved road in the direction of home, with little sound and little fear. Anything nasty enough to cause trouble in this part of town, knew that a vampire lived with a demi-god in this building. So only someone extremely stupid would cause her any trouble. As she rounded to back to the lift, she paused and squinted.....Was...Someone sleeping in front of the door? It didn't look Wait....Was that..? Nooooo....Well, maybe. Addie was here after all, so it was possible, but.... Camellia approached quietly, squinting at Nick as she got closer, actually trying to be quiet now, and doing rather well, too.

Nick's back was indeed against the door, his head forward as light breaths betrayed the sounds of sleep. His knees were bent, the low top converse flat on the pavement, while arms circled his legs to keep everything in place. The dark tank top he wore exposed that half finished dragon tattoo on his left shoulder and bicep, and the jeans he was sporting had more holes in them than a whore monger's alibi. He shifted just a bit, feet pushing his back harder against the door. That had happened fairly
often, and was probably the reason he hadn't fallen over while he slumbered. Oblivious to the world around him, there was no way he would hear the soft step of an elephant, let alone the ones that Camellia was now using.

She drew near, and stopped about arm's reach away, and she squinted at Nick for a long moment......Then she reached out, veeeerrryyyyy slowly....Very Carefully.......And poked him on the nose with her forefinger.

Sleep instinct had his left hand rising, the back of his hand meeting Camillia's wrist and pushing it away. "Stop Hayden." Whatever he was dreaming probably had his younger brothers in it.

Wide eyes. Stare, stare, stare...... She poked him again, just to be sure.....Right on the nose, harder this time.

Nick's eyes flew open and stared at the finger in his face. His hand moved to push it aside again. "I swear to god Hayden, I'm gonna bash you on he head, and I don't care what your mother will..." Looking up, he was disoriented, and more than a little surprised to see not an annoying younger brother, but Camillia. He breathed for several moments before remembering everything. "Cammy?" The question came with a squint at her face with eyes almost too dark. "Shit... I fell asleep! **** me!" He pushed himself upwards and shoved his hands into his pockets looking angry and guilty at the same time. "It is you though... I mean it shouldn't be, but... none of this should be really."

"NNNNIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!! !!" Que the squee. Nick stood up. Bad move Nick. You know this girl's a glomper, and glomp she did! Diving straight into Nick and probably dragging him back to the ground all over again. "OHMYGODSITSYOU" Little bit more squeeing before her wit kicked in. "Um...No, I don't think I will, thanks." She retorted with a grin, and poked him on the nose again. "What the hells are *you* doing here, though?! *I* swapped places with myself like, 3 years ago ...." Que confused face as Nick's words start to, you know, filter and register.

Nick's nod was more like a confused circle. "Wait... switched places. How the hell is that.. Never mind. I was hoping that was you I saw yesterday. You sure spent your sweet time coming back here. How would you feel if I were just a blood splatter on the door right now?" It was hard to chastise even teasingly when being hugged and tackled all at once. That blood spatter might happen anyway at the hands of the girl, accidentally of course. There might be a little backlash that came from that, if the body were ever found. "It is me, but I'm not important right now. I'm looking for someone. I was hoping you could help."

"Pft." She snorted at the mere idea of someone murdering Nick here. "This building is probably the safest place in the whole city." Cam replied, picking herself up with a hop and skipped in place. "Aaahhhh, I can't believe it's really yooouuu, Addie's gonna be so pleased!" Clapping her hands, before she stopped, and squinted at Nick. "Hey now, don't go changing the subject." His words register again. "Oh, wait, you're not.....Okay, so...Who're you looking for?" And no, she doesn't offer a hand to help Nick up. He shoulda known better than to get up in the first place!

He didn't need a hand, or expect one really. "I can't either..." but something had him focus on her. "Addie, that's who I'm looking for. You know where she is? I need to find her, make sure she's.. I need to find her." Paranoia, probably inherited from his father, or maybe just a wise precaution after what happened to the man a week earlier. "Can we go there, like, now? The sooner I find her and figure things out the sooner I can start looking for a way home."

Cam frowned for a second or two, before shaking her head softly. Suddenly, she'd become very serious. "No, I don't know where she is at the moment....I never really got around to finding out where she lives... She's been here though..."

It was a weak lead, almost nothing beyond confirmation that he had been dropped in the right place. He took a deep breath, then did the only guy thing he could. He stepped back and checked out Camillia. "Well, you look pretty good. Something must be treating you well." There was no guilt in him, as he'd left off words that might only hurt like. You're too tall, and not dark enough. Damn I miss you. "Do me a favor?" Nick's stomach rumbled. He was hungry, but he'd lift something on the way back through the marketplace. "Don't tell her I'm here if you see her." He didn't know why, it just seemed prudent. "I mean I don't need more unless..." He gave Cam a serious look. "Remember that time that you me and Addie were walking home and you all thought it would be funny to send me on a short cut through that bullpen? I'm calling in a favor for that." He pointed at her. "I don't know whose idea that was... but you owe me."

"I'm part vampiric, doesn't take much to stay in shape!" She replied with a twinkling grin "Well...It worked, didn't it?!" Flails a little, before giggling. Nick running from the bull had been pretty funny, and it *had* been quicker! Giving him a squint, she nodded softly. "Alright...Although it seems like that defeats the purpose of being here, you know....?" She glanced at his stomach, then at Nick, before gesturing around to the front of the shop. "If we go in through the front door, we can head straight for the kitchen if you want....?"

Food sounded good, well better than good really. "If you call near death by impalement working, I guess it did. You two didn't have to laugh so hard though." Hard to believe that his mouth could go so petulant, but there it was. "Okay, I might be a little hungry." He chose to ignore that his stomach was talking louder than he was. "A little bit. That'll give me a chance to tell you what I need to do." Nick looked down the alleyway, both directions as though he expected to see someone there. "You lead the way though." Famous last words that had gotten him into trouble a lot.

"Yes we did. It was funny." Cam replied with a airy tone, before leading the way, a bright grin plastered across her face as she fiddled with her keys. "You can *start* with why you're looking for Addie, and follow that up with why you don't want *her* to know? I mean.....It would really help...." Cam reiterated as she fiddled with the front door to the shop, eventually getting it to open in such a manner that it wouldn't trip a bajillion alarms.

"Mostly, I was sent here, and I don't want that to make her disappear. Besides, you don't want to spoil the surprise of seeing me, right? Take her opportunity to tackle me too. You guys liked to tackle me a lot, I'm starting to see a strange pattern." It was said with a laugh, wrestling as they went from place to place just seemed to happen. "As for why? People are concerned for her, and asked me to come and make sure she's alright." He wasn't about to say who had come, it was hard enough to think about right now. He waited as Cam unlocked the door, her father was kind of paranoid too it seemed.

SUPER PARANOID. Nick would *feel* the charms and spells brush against him as they crossed the threshold. Fun fact, this also meant some of the lights turned on. Don't ask her how, but her dad wired the spells into the lights. Once they were in, she closed and locked the door once again, before forging ahead past all the various lines of clothes and what have you to the counter. Don't mind the posters Nick! No one there you recognise!

Don't mind the posters... one sure fired way to make him mind them. "Wait... What the hell?" There in all her lingerie'd skin and glory was Addie, certainly not acting like the girl he knew. She's not allowed to wear looks like that on her face! "What does Addie have a fear of clothing now? I mean... C'mon you can practically see her..." Points to what he's talking about, then realizing what he's doing looks away only to come face to face with Addie in even less. "fuck."

Cam blinked, and stopped to peer where he pointed. Then looked at Nick and giggled almost hysterically. "Oh, come on! Like you didn't spend *plenty* of time ogling at Thorn's posters!" She swatted him up the backside of his head, before carrying on with another giggle, unlocking yet another door behind the counter, this one leading to a flight of stairs. "Soooo, someone's worried about Addie and sent you back to check up on her, after she got sent back?"

"Well, Thorn is different. I never wrestled with her... in person anyway." Teen aged minds did all kinds of things. "And that actually didn't help at all Cammy! Now all I can think of is some other thirteen year old thinking... THOUGHTS!" He kept his head down, it seemed the only safe way to walk through the place, his eyes straight ahead on Camillia's shoes, as she led the way through to the back and up the stairs. "That's about the long and the short of it. They knew that Addie would recognize me and trust me. I don't disagree, and it will be great to see her... It really will. It's been two years, did you know that?"

"Well....Keep it in your pants, okay?" Cam replied with a snicker, not at all worried about Nick's state of mind. "Well...Yeah, I've been here for two years or so. Makes sense you'd keep going for two years as well." She said, turning on the spot to look at Nick, and walked backwards with an almost eerie confidence in the direction of the fridge, since they'd in fact arrived in the kitchen now.

"Where else would I put it Cam? Maybe don't answer that..." It was probably too late. "Another reason to keep from telling her is that I'm not sure who else might be looking." He was sure someone was though. Paranoia, maybe but they'd sent her here for many reasons. Nick put his backside against a counter and lifted himself up to sit there. "But that's what I need your help with. How do you feel about breaking into a place with me? Security is kind of minimal." Read that as nonexistent. "But I could use the backup."

"Sweetie, if you haven't figured it out after all that 'wrestling' with Thorn...." The reply came back almost before he could tell her not to. Cam tilted her head at him for a moment. "Uhuh..." And then Cam raised an eyebrow. "First you mess with the timeline, now it's breaking and entering?.....Eh, sure...But first you gotta tell me where we're going" She then pulled the fridge open and extracted some leftover lasagna. "And you eat this.

Nick's eyes went wide, and he gathered up a hanging hand towel and lofted it at Cam. "That's just mean! I'm not here for that... If that were my... I wouldn't have come back okay." He did have reasons to go home. Some were better than others. He gladly accepted the leftovers, not even letting her warm them up. That would take too long, when he could do the job himself. He pushed his fork into the saucy mess. "The only place I know that has what I need. Kruger's Exotic. I didn't have a lot of time to prepare when I got... when I stepped through the tunnel." Read that as none because he'd had too much help from his father. "I'm not really sure of his schedule. He's kind of busy these days if I remember, the duels and the theater and whatever other messes he gets himself into."

"Bah" She waved her hand at the towel, her one weakness! "Oookkaayyy, so we're breaking into your dad's shop......I guess it could be stranger." Came said with another small shrug, and went off to rummage in a cupboard. "What...Exactly, are we looking for there?"

"A very specific pair of hammers, some decent light armor. I need to be able to move in it. I hope I can find something that's still tough enough to deal with whatever is coming." He had an idea, and short of heavy plate, he just wasn't sure. "Maybe a little cash, not a lot because it's my dad ya know? I'm sure he'd give it to me if he were here." If he were still alive and walking around. "I mean not the one that is here but the one that's back there. I hate time talk!"

She giggled again, and nodded in understand. "Maaaannnnn if you need cash, just ask. You know my parents are loaded with more than they know how to use." Between the shop, and he dad's adventuring, they had multi-fortunes in the building alone. "Okay then. Shouldn't be too hard. We can set out as soon as you're finished eating...Ah, there it is!" She exclaimed happily, and pulled out a wrapped bundle that had the suspicious look of a look pick set...

His head shook immediately at the offer of cash. "I'd rather pose for one of those naked pictures downstairs than ask for money." To be frank they weren't naked, but they might as well be now in his head. "I'd get a job, but I need to be able to move. I don't have hours to commit to work... no matter how much I hate turning thief." He eyed the lock picks as he finished off the lasagna. "I'm ready now." The plate went into the sink, and Nick's ass slid from the counter top. "Of course if he's there, someone will need to run interference."

That, is because he's a dirty minded boy. "Good! We'll get going then! The sooner the better. Then you can get around to explaining the bit about people after Addie." Yeah, liked she'd let that slip!

Alleyways, they offered access to everything in this city. It was almost like the building planner was also some sort of crime lord in his off hours. The one nearest the forge had a couple extra large rats in it, and they were vaguely humanoid shaped. For someone with good dexterity and reflexes, as had likely been witnessed as he picked a pocket or two on the way here, Nick had very few skulking skills. Then again he still tripped occasionally because his feet had grown so quickly. He was more than happy to take Cam's suggestion... read that as command... that he wait while she checked the front to see if the place was occupied at this time. "Look, I'm pretty sure that he'll be super busy, he really prefers to do this work at night. It's a little cooler, and easier to see honestly." He may have crossed the line that she told him to stand behind.

Camellia reconnoitered the shop , before squinting at Nick for a moment when he stepped over said line that he'd been told to stand behind until he repositioned. If they were going to sneak then they damn well ought to be sneaking, and a sneaker, Nick was not!

The proper sneaker would find the front doors closed and a solid looking lock on them. No key or combinations on that monstrosity, the how of it was something that his father had come up with years before. "Well?" Nick had been in this alleway a thousand times, this was the first time he'd ever been nervous about it. Of course it was the first time he'd planned on doing something like this too. It wasn't the same as an unwary pedestrian, those things they lost were simply good practice. That's what he'd heard from a certain magical teacher once.

Cam squinted at him some more. "It's empty as far as I can tell. Hell of a lock on the door, my lockpicks aren't going to open it....But, ah, I figured you already knew about that, and have some idea on how to get in?" Camellia asked with a tilt of her head. She didn't seem terribly nervous, since technically they weren't doing anything wrong....From A certain point of view, anyways.

"That one... magnetic lock, pretty cool actually, but yeah, there's a back way in." No need for skulking now right? That would just look suspicious. "My dad used to keep this open for one of the neighborhood kids so he had a place to sleep when his dad knocked him around... Eventually there was no need." The back door was far more conventional, and the lock on it likely something Cam would be able to breeze through. "Course this doesn't get us into the forge, easily either, but I know a way in."
Nick Allen: Assuming that it was there in this time. It had to be right?

Camellia examined the lock for a second, before pulling her lock picking kit out and got to work. "Uhuh....Well....I guess it could be worse." There was a click, and the door opened up easily, she gave a smile and gestured grandly. "You know, technically, this doesn't really count as breaking and entering, since it's your home...." It would hardly be Kruger's shop if it didn't have a forge in it, now would it?

"I don't live here... I'm still out at Belglade most of the time... when I'm not working, or training. Don't tell my dad but I prefer the training." He frowned a bit at that, for a moment he'd forgotten what had happened, and now there was more guilt. "Of course the forge is in there, I meant the way through. This is just kind of a storage unit." Nick led the way in Shelves nearly two stories high lined the walls of the place filled with metals and equipment, nothing finished, but the makings of the alloys used inside. "See, he never changes." He led Cam around workbenches to the one corner and began to scale the shelves. Up here is a spot I used to use to get out when Dad did have me for a night... I mean if he didn't want me going anywhere."

She pulled the door shut behind them as they wandered in and she followed Nick at a close enough pace, watching him clamber up the shelves. "Wait, we have to get in, to get out....To get in?" Convoluted much? "I'd have thought the forge was on the ground level...?" Since that was usually the safest and easiest place for them to be. See, she's never actually been inside the building before?

"Uhm... no? There's living space up there... Just come on!" Nick was at the twenty foot mark when he slid onto a shelf and looked around. "It is still here! I don't know what they used this for when the place was built but I used it to sneak out at night." A long pocket knife came out of his jeans and worked its way under the metal flashing until there was a metallic scrape and squeal of a rusted hinge. "You don't mind being in close places I hope." Then he was scrambling up the chute until he felt the floor over head. "Damn, dark in here, but I think I can..." There was an audible click and then light came down the chute, past the body of Nick as he pulled himself out. He dropped a hand to Cam, not thinking it strange in the least that he should considering he never seemed to get one from her.

Flowering Swordmage: "I guess..." Cam replied, scurrying up after Nick with a huff and followed him along the chute. Of course she grabbed his hand and accepted his help getting out, because! "Bah...Dusty" She complained, with a sneeze and scrunched her nose up. "Probably used to be a coal chute or ventilation"

"That's probably why you never knew about it... All that dirt? Eww... Grrroosss Niko..." Nick rolled his eyes as he raised his voice in an approximation of Cam's. The apartment was pretty dusty too. There were periods when his father didn't use the place, Nick thought this must be one of those. He looked around and nodded seriously. "Like I said he never changes. I think he bought the place with some of these pictures hanging." Leading Cam through the tiny space he opened a door and descended into the forge. "Convenient though." Maybe he would make the move when he got back to Avy... He had to get back to her. "You keep watch, I need to look through my dad's hiding places."

"Mhm.....Um, what am I watching for?" She asked, looking around the forge with interest. He eyes could adjust for the dark, if it was dark, probably better than Nick's could. "Oh! What are *you* looking for, anyways? I mean, what *exactly.* You never said."

"What?!" Nick's head jerked around, he was just beginning to open hidden wall cabinets. "Oh... Just a set of hammers. I'll need them against these guys I think... they remind me of that old cleric sect that was always trying to turn you."

Camellia wrinkled her nose. "Those guys." She shook herself a little bit. "They were creepy..." Came added, before looking and wandering around again, before careful not to touch anything, It probably wouldn't do to touch anything... "So, we need a pair of hammers to deal with possibly crazy, definitely creepy, religious people....Awesome."

"Holy weapons... I mean it can't hurt right?" And it would likely be his best defense. "I think it was the plan to get them all along. If Dad hadn't... Well he'd know where they were." Nick worked his way through cabinets and false topped benches. "Dad always hid the good stuff. He said that a sword is just a sword, but some of this stuff was dangerous." He knelt down to a large chest it too was locked. "Uhm... still got those lockpicks handy?" He nodded to the lock on the front. "This has a number of things in it... maybe that too. I'll go keep an eye on the door."

"Holy weapons?" She repeated, blinking at him and making a small mental note to be careful around them. Part god or not, she was still part vampire herself and that could have a bad effect. She looked at the chest a moment and nodded, moving over to it and pulling her lock picks out. "Shouldn't be too hard...Unless your dad did something special to it?" She asked, looking up at Nick.

"I don't think so, he used to keep his cash in there until it was time to go to the bank. He wouldn't have wanted to mess around too much with traps. He hated that chore when he was alive." Nick was moving through the small waiting room, looking at the only real changes to the place. Some posters on the wall with Addie and a few other girls. A couple of magazines, Sports Beat seemed to dominate the table. Nick looked back at the wall. "Ever heard of a band called Trash?"

"Oh, okay." She replied, and got stuck in while Nick spoke, not paying complete attention to him since she knew what she...Wait. There was a crack and a clatter as Cam's lockpicks slipped and crashed on the floor. "Wait, what was that, Nicky?" Camellia said, looking over her shoulder.

"Trash, there's a poster on the wall. I think..." He squints at the thing looking for names. "I think it's her band. Lead vocals and guitar." He pulled it down off the wall and took it to the table, and there on the cover of Sports Beat was Addie's smiling eyes. There was not going to be a lot of time, but he flipped through until he spotted the article. "Might have another clue too." The poster was folded and put with the magazine which he rolled up and stuck in his back pocket before turning to look at Cam. "Did you just drop your tools?"

"I....Yeah...No, I know what band she plays in.....Ah..Yeah.." Cam said with a slow blink at Nick and looked at him for a couple of seconds, before resuming her work on the chest and collecting her things quickly. "It's ah...An older lock....Probably made by dwarfs, they really know how to keep things locked up..." There was a satisfying click like crunch, and she extracted her picks. "It's open."

Nick had just finished shoving the rolled up bundle into his back pocket, and hurried across the forge. He dropped hard to his knees. Okay dad... let's see how well I knew you." Nick opened the lid, and much as he'd said there was a lot of cash in the top of the chest. His hand went out, hesitating only slightly, index finger curling in to rub at his thumb. "Harder than I thought it would be..." Deftly he slid several bills out and shoved them into his front pocket like they were burning him. -

His thumbs went around the inside edge, and there were several clicks. Nick grabbed Cam's arm and pulled her back as the chest unfolded by itself. "Might be dwarven, but that's had some work done to it." A large Cedar box was inside when the thing finally stopped its expansion. "That..." He indicated the box with a nod of his head and a point of his hand. Then he scrambled to retrieve the thing. There were other things down there, but Nick pretty much ignored them as he carried the box to a counter to open.

Cam was kinda dazed for the moment as she tried to confirm with herself what Nick was saying. She collected her tools and carried them to the counter with Nick, to watch him open the box and started putting her tools away with over deliberate care. Something she tended to do whilst thinking something out.

The lid lifted open easily, within rested a pair of hammers nestled into foam cut outs that matched their shapes. He was sure it was them, there was no mistaking the sword wielding angel on the one hammer or that clawed demon fist holding the broken femur. "I've never seen them before." Nick reached in and plucked the pair out, testing the weight of both Heaven and Hell. "They're balance is..." Nick made a few moves with them. "I don't know why he gave these up for that thing he's using... he was using." Nick's hear twa pounding, he'd wanted armor too, but trying it on might take too long. Instead he grabbed the belt that was coiled up in a spot between the two hammers and looked at Cam kind of panicked. "Let's get out of here, it feels like death to me." He didn't wait to see if she followed or not, suddenly wanting to be very far away from the forge.

She was already picking her tools up and following Nick's footsteps before he was even a foot away. "Nicky, we gotta talk." Camellia said, tracking after him easily. "Let's...Let's go first though." Camellia had the unfortunate ability of being empathic, and she could feel Nick's unease like a wave at the moment, despite locking her mind down. His mood was catchy and she felt the same urge to leave.

Nick refused to look at her, opting for a spot over her shoulder that might give the impression that he was looking at her. "There's nothing to talk about." He grabbed her wrist and pulled at her to follow him back to the stairs and out. He slid down the coal chute, twisting as he exploded through the door. He didn't skulk well, but he did have other talents. Nick's body fell over the side, but his hands caught the shelf edge as though he'd done this before. The climb down went faster than up.

She followed, following after Nick in much the same manner. She didn't have his foreknowledge of the area, but she did have pretty fast reactions times, and came skidding out of the chute and twisted her weight around, coming out a bit faster than Nick did and used the momentum to throw herself to the ground. Being a bit more on the supernatural side helped in these situations and she landed on one knee before standing and dusting herself down, it just so happened she blocked the path out a swell....Convenient, right? She looked up at Nick for a few moments. "Don't lie to me Nicky..."

Nick threw the belt around his waist, and tried to buckle it before realizing it would need some more holes punched into it. Instead he hung it over his shoulder and slid the hammers home into metallic loops. His brows furrowed somewhere between anger and pain. "What do you want me to say? I'm here, he's not, and that's my fault? That if I'd been ready or faster that he'd be the one doing this and not me? That he was stupid and slow and..." His eyes closed, he wouldn't break, there was no time for that. He had to find Addie. "Those people, they don't care about him or me. They want her. I'm not going to let that happen." He tried to shoulder his way past Cam. "Avy wouldn't have sent us if it wasn't important. She needs to know." He didn't say who She was, mostly because if asked he wouldn't know who he meant more.

She didn't let him. Not right away, anyway. She pressed a hand against his chest to stop him, but it crumpled, allowing him past as she stood to one side. "Nick...I know you..." Cam sighed. It sounded hollow in her head. 'I know you. I know you wouldn't have let your dad die if you could have stopped it.' It was too....Hollow. "You go on ahead, I'll lock the door....Make sure you're not followed." He couldn't sneak for love nor money, but she could at least watch his back in the dark. That's what friends are for, after all..Right?

"He was too stubborn to let me try... Damned old man had no right to be that strong." Much as he wanted to , Nick didn't rush away. He wanted to so badly, but there was nowhere to rush to. Instead he took the magazine out of his back pocket, flipped to the beginning of the article and started to read, looking up occasionally to make sure he wasn't going to run into something.or someone. "It can't be that simple... can it?" He looked over his shoulder to see if Cam was following or catching up. "I need to get drunk... and I don't mean by you... so don't ask!"

She watched Nick head off for a moment, before pulling her lock picking set out again and with a few twists and turns, managed to get the door to lock again. Not so much to prove they'd never been there, but to stop anyone that shouldn't go there, from going....If that made any sense at all. "Heeeeyyyy, I only drink quality O Negative! I have some taste, after all. Can't go drinking whatever from wherever."

Rhydin, September 17th, 2016

Things had gone much less awry than he had been expecting. That hadn?t kept him from practicing in the mornings on the beach, as Nick tried to find a way to incorporate the hammers into the capoeira routines that he knew. It should have been like second nature to him, but admittedly he didn?t have his head in the game. He was of course expecting bad men in every shadow, while that might be easily explained by what he?d seen, he couldn?t help but wonder why nothing had happened. He?d been with Addie for over a week. It was great during the day when they found ways to joke and stay busy. At night things were different, especially if Addie?s guy came over. Nick kind of relegated himself to the guest house for those nights.

Tonight wasn?t one of those, it was a walk around quietly trying to find a bottle and finish his letter to Avy night. The sit in a chair focusing so hard that his face was one big brood fest, and he couldn?t hear anything coming if he tried kind of night. Maybe it had something to do with sitting in the dark, but he couldn?t quite get the last few lines out. ?I wonder if this is how Addie feels when she?s stuck on a lyric?? A rhetorical question, since he believed he was in the room all by himself. As quiet as it was, he could have been in the entire house alone.

?Only if I try to find a way to rhyme with ?orange?.? Came an answer unbidden. Padding out of the kitchen barefooted, she had a spoon stuck in a carton of ice cream which she seemed pretty intent on taking with her wherever she was going. Already in her pajamas despite an hour that would usually require some party or another, she instead redirected her path around the corner and over to see what it was he was working on. Pen, paper, that chicken scratch he called handwriting. Sure it was upside down for her but she was trying her best to read it in a most nosy fashion. ?Cha writin???

Once he?d have jumped at being sneaked up on by her. She?d done it so often that it was get used to it or have a heart attack every time. He started to pull the page so she couldn?t read what was in it, then perhaps just to throw her off by acting out of character he just handed it over. ?Just something I?ve been doing since I got here. It started because I didn?t have anyone to talk to, but?? Nick let a huge sigh. ?Maybe I?m just being stupid, but I can?t seem to stop now. I?d hoped to be back by now, but I don?t even know how that will happen. I certainly don?t know what needs doing, and worse than all of that it doesn?t even look like you need me here at all. Not for the reasons I was sent at least.? He picked up his head and peered at the spoon in his hand. ?Is that the last of that?? Indicating the ice cream with a nod of his head. It wasn?t what he wanted to know.

Shaking off the subject change, he was getting too good at that when it came to talking about this. ?Am I being stupid? I mean, she?s way better than I am.?

Sure enough she peered at him suspiciously when he flat out handed it to her instead of playing hide and seek with it. But her curiosity won out and she carefully plucked the piece of paper from his grasp to give it a looksee. Her curiosity bled into confusion and then finally what looked to be annoyance. Pulling one of her bare feet back, she aimed a kick at his shin. It wasn't anything particularly hard (and really, the girl could kick hard), but rather just enough to jar him from his self imposed pity party. Then immediately after, she took the spoon, full of ice cream as it was, and tried to stick it in his mouth.

?You?re being stupid but not for the reason you think.? Addie sighed and then beckoned for him to stand up. ?C?mon, we need alcohol for this.?

Whether or not he followed, she went back to the kitchen where she popped open one of several liquor cabinets so she could rummage through the selection. ?I?m about to drop some real talk on your face so pick our poison because I?m gonna have to drink too. Uhhh tequila, whiskey, or vodka.? Three bottles were taken out and set on the counter.

They?d kind of mastered the forced spoon share over the years. Though it had been a while and there was a bit of tooth contact when she stuck it into his mouth. ?Ow!? It was said with a mouthful of ice cream which he had no problem showing her as he got up to follow. It hadn?t really hurt, but he played like it did going so far as to rub his shin and give her a wounded look.

?Better make it whiskey, vodka makes me want to sing, and tequila makes me forget everything and black out.? She was getting the bottle, so Nick set about getting some glasses for it, large ones because he didn?t know if she was just gonna keep it with her like she was the ice cream. ?Okay, maybe I am having a pity party. Part of me is glad to be right where I am, there?s a lot of things back there that I don?t want to deal with, and at least one of those things is that you?re not there. The rest of me, it knows that I left without telling her anything, but yeah, go ahead with Addie?s words to live by.? He fixed her with a grin that hadn?t changed much over the years. ?Really, I?m all ears. Especially if it will help.?

For his grousing he earned a good natured roll of her eyes as if to say Quit being a baby before she continued on her way. He picked whiskey so she put the other two back in the cupboard and shut it gently. When she turned back, she squinted at the glasses, then at the bottle, and finally at him. But rather than argue, she shrugged and twisted the cap off, filling both glasses far higher than either had any reason to be filled.

?You?re a big dummy. You mean to tell me that all this time, you?ve liked her but you never, like, thought that maybe it?d be a good idea to tell her?? She figured she could start there, gauging just how far gone he was over the girl that Addie pretty much considered the closest thing to a sister that she would ever have. He grinned but she was studious, watching the minute changes in his expression as she asked her question. If anyone was going to get to the bottom of this, she was.

?Of course I?ve liked her. I would?ve thought that was obvious to you. Maybe not?? Asking the question that had already been answered was probably another quirk she hadn?t missed. ?Look, I mean she?s.. Avy, with a destiny and important. Even if I had told her, I had no idea what I could offer her that would have been enough to be bothered. And you know, what if I told her and she just wrecked me? That would?ve changed everything.? Nick raised the glass, hoping that would be enough, but one look at Addie told him that she knew he was holding out on her. He took his lower lip between his teeth, a sure sign that he didn?t want to tell the truth, but wouldn?t be able to hold it in much longer.

?I didn?t want to end up like the old man. Stuck on something or someone that he knew he could never? I just figured that was how things were. How they would be. What is it you aren?t saying Addie?? The knowing each other went both ways. ?You have something stuck in your head too.?

"If it were obvious, I wouldn't be asking. Half the time you picked on her like Alex did and the other half of the time, you'd get this weird look on your face like maybe you needed to go to the bathroom or something." She pointed out with half of a smirk. Her glass was taken up for a sip then set aside in favor of the ice cream. From a drawer, she pulled another spoon and stabbed it into the container so he could partake if he wanted to. With her hand still around the spoon's handle, she paused to stare at him like she was trying to putting pieces together and figure him out.

"Avy. Averia. Little princess girl who tried at every turn to be as strong and fast and cool as you and her brother? You know it had nothing to do with Alexander, right? We all have destinies, dude, me and you and her included, but who are we to say what those are and who gets to be involved?" Though she meant to say more on just why she thought he was being stupid, his soft admission instead rendered her quiet. She dipped her gaze to the stuff on the counter in quick contemplation before she reached for the glass. How right she had been that she was going to need alcohol for this. Without hesitation, she drank down the entirety of the glass's contents and set it down with a hard thunk.

?Nick, that girl has been ridiculously head-over-heels about you, like worse than I was with Kane for all those years?? That still stung. For so long she had pined over the one who had been meant as her protector and in the end she simply let him go. Not only that but he went without a fight. She raked her teeth across the pulp of her bottom lip and worked on refilling her glass. ?She?s gonna kill me for telling you that. Don?t tell her, okay??

He grabbed the spoon and pulled free some of the ice cream only to end up flicking it at her over the comment about how he looked at Avy. ?Why would I think it had anything to do with me? Avy was always competitive. With everyone. I mean? she was right most of the time, but I chalk that up to excessive schooling.? Nick looked away from Addie brows dropping as he remembered how often he and Alex did pick on the girl. He was quick to follow Addie?s example and drain his glass, though his hand went for the bottle and a refill.

?I said things, but maybe it wasn?t for the reasons people thought. Did you ever really watch her face in those moments? There?s a look that comes to it that only lasts for a fraction of a second before that defiant look reappears. I swear it was one of the most beautiful things I?d ever seen. Maybe I could have handled it better, but honestly I only just started to realize exactly how much I do care.? Then his eyes went wider at Addie. ?But don?t think that excuses you! How long have you known and why am I only hearing it now??

He took another drink and chased it down with a spoonful of ice cream. It wasn?t as good as he?d hoped it would be, but he?d tasted much worse, like the night he?d tried to put vodka with mountain dew and had to plug his nose just to finish it. ?Silly me for thinking that her parents, and let?s be really honest and say her father believes he has her destiny lined out already. So I said things, to get that reaction, and to keep myself from having one. I?m not sure that makes any sense, though it might by the end of this glass.?

Ice cream went splat against her upper arm and without hesitation, she leaned her chin down to lick it up. Whatever was left was wiped away with her palm then smeared down the leg of the too short shorts that left even longer legs on display in all of their tanned and toned glory. "She and I were never competitive. But you never realized that she did the things you said because maybe she wanted to impress you? I mean, shit, the girl can read minds and move stuff with a thought and shoot a target from a ridic distance and speak like nine languages... so why would she have to try and impress you by doing more?

"No, you're a dumb boy and dumb boys never notice anything because girls work in more subtle ways. So instead you got to pick on her and hope she realized you were doing it out of the goodness of your heart and to see whatever weird look she'd give you. I oughta punch you in the arm for being so dense."

Addie sighed. It was one of those long suffering sighs that said quite clearly that Nick was a big dummy head and it was obviously all his fault that he never noticed what had been blatantly clear to her for ages. "You remember the summer that you and Alex had the boys only fort and wouldn't let her in? And how she didn't speak to you for weeks after that? Since then abouts. But it wasn?t my place to tell you.?

With her own glass refilled, she drank again. Stealing the spoons away, she tossed them in the sink, put the lid on the ice cream and threw it in the freezer before snatched the whiskey bottle by its neck and beckoning for him to follow her back out into the living room. Liquor and ice cream in the kitchen at a late hour was lame anyways. ?You do know that Aunt Claire and Uncle Noct sorta got together despite, like, everything and everyone going against them. It took until Av and Alex turned five before the Lucian Council declared them legitimate heirs to the kingdom even. It?s like a goddamned soap opera or something and you know what every good soap opera needs? A cute non-royal blacksmith boy to mix things up. Also, you?re a big dummy.?

He?d follow, though it would take a moment as he sat there thinking over what she wa saying. ?Maybe it wasn?t your place, but I wish you?d have done it anyway.? He was a big dummy, but at least he knew that didn?t really matter to Addie. He let six long heartbeats go by, counting the as the alcohol worked its way deeper into him. Then he was moving, following along after Addie as he?d done so many times before. ?I?m big, and dumb, and subtlety is lost on me. That?s the problem with you girls. You spend so much time being subtle that the things you do are only apparent to other girls. It?s like you all completely forget that guys are exactly that.? He dropped down on the couch next to her reaching out to give her a squeeze. ?Don?t worry though, when I get back I?ll let her know how I feel. I?ve spent pretty much the last month trying to tell her in the only way I can. Not that she?ll ever see it.?

Nick slouched down on the couch, kicking off his shoes and letting them fall wherever they decided. ?I?m not sure how to do that yet, but if my dad could figure it out, I?m sure someone else can. I?ve actually considered going and asking him to do it again, but then I remember what happened last time. I didn?t always pick on her ya know. Not when it was just the two of us. I still managed to get her into trouble, but why would that ever change?? Maybe he was starting to feel the whiskey, but he looked at all the furniture, and then Addie. ?We could make an awesome blanket fort in here. Did you ever think of that??

"If I punched you would that be subtle enough for your liking? Because I can if you keep crying about girls being too subtle. We're the fairer sex, you know." As if to reiterate that point, she turned in her seat, yawned and flopped against him, using his lap as a pillow. He could deal, as far as she was concerned. There she sat, quiet and thoughtful as she considered his ramblings.

"You probably shouldn't go to him... it runs the risk of messing with things and Aunt Claire would probably yell at you too.? Turning her head to look across the living room sideways, she snickered after a few moments, the change in subject welcome compared to thoughts of going home or her inability to do so. ?It?s been literal years since the last time I did that.?

?Which obviously means we have to do it.?

?I?m almost past the point of caring about timelines and the like. Almost.? He did care if it would mess stuff up, but wasn?t that already the case? How much worse could it get? He looked down at the head now in his lap, laughing and shaking his head. For good measure he played with her hair. ?He?d do it for you. You know he loved you, right?? Did he tell her that his father had found a way well before Averia came? It wouldn?t do any good now would it?

?Well, we can?t make a fort without blankets, and there?s no blankets if you?re going to turn me into your personal pillow.? Nick swallowed down the last of the new glass and waited to see if Addie was in the mood to move or if he?d have to try and dump her on the floor. ?Where do we start? I think pull some chairs out of the kitchen and make this the biggest one we?ve ever done.?

?If you want to have any sort of a shot at going home, you have to care about the timelines. I got sloppy and now look, I?m fucked. Not literally, but you know what I mean.? She didn?t lay there for long, instead enticed by the promise of a blanket fort to end all blanket forts. Kicking her legs to get herself up, she sat upright then got to her feet with a slight sway. There she looked down at him, a definitive frown catching hold of her mouth. ?I know he would. But sometimes it?s not about ?would? but rather ?should?.?

Should Nick have come back to this time to find her? No. Would he have in an instant even if Addie didn?t want him to? Well, look at them now and you?ll get your answer. But she didn?t linger long on the subject, instead spinning an unsteady circle and setting off for one of the many closets in the whitewashed seaside almost-beachhouse. ?Grab the chairs, I?ll get the blankets. Then we can move the couch and use the middle of the room.?

He had more to say in his head, but those things would have to wait, Addie was up and running. It would be okay to talk about them later, things like fate and providence and how can it be wrong, because it?s probably already happened. Was the past changeable? He had faith that anything was possible in a city so near the chaotic Nexus, but really how would anyone know for certain?

Nick?s liquor fuzzed brain began thinking on epic scales. At least so far as blanket forts went. He did more than just get all the chairs he could find, pulling every seat and couch cushion to the floor. He even went to the spare bedroom and manhandled the mattress off of the bed, It was dropped unceremoniously to the living room floor. Bare couches and chairs were pushed way back as together they tied off blankets into a room encompassing series of low fabric rooftops. As always the side that the television was on stayed open. When they were younger it would be whatever the latest horror movie was out flashing across the screen. Now he let Addie have the choice since she had been here longer and more than likely knew what was current.

The smell of popcorn hung in the air, because whiskey and movies, combined with blanket forts demanded that they have popcorn too. Nick lay on his back, a fist full of popped kernels being depleted slowly as he put them one at a time into his mouth. ?You mentioned destiny? Don?t look at me that way! You did! If it is ordained or whatever, that I am going to be with Avy, even for a little while, then nothing I do here can be wrong, don?tcha think?? Oddly enough the movie they were watching was just out of theaters, but they?d already seen it long ago. Back then it had left him at least with nightmares, but then like now he had Addie close to cuddle up to if it got too bad.

Most assuredly the giant blanket fort would bring questions in the morning when Michi inevitably came stumbling downstairs for cereal and found that all of the furniture had been moved for that monstrosity. For one night though, Addie didn?t care. In her two years since coming to the past, she had tried so hard to grow up quickly, to fill in all of the blanks that had gone blank in the months leading up to her disappearance. In the end it left her in over her head and nearly dead for the sake of being an ?adult?. Somewhere along the way, she?d grabbed more bottles from the cabinet, just in case and they sat just inside the fort?s opening for easy access. Once they got settled, she sprawled on her stomach with half of her attention on him and the other half on the TV.

?That?s not true. Destiny isn?t set in stone. It can be influenced and changed by the things that we do? it was once explained to me, like, every decision we make spawns different possibilities and each of those lines spread out from one another like one giant messed up web. And the more that we change things, the more possible it becomes that we step down a line that doesn?t align with what we thought was supposed to happen. Like? the things I?ve done since being here, paired with whatever else may have happened, has completely changed things even in the short term. Who knows what impact they?ll have in the long run?? Out of breath, she exhaled a huff and scooped up a handful of popcorn to stuff it in her mouth. It was better than rambling.

Popcorn flew, even though Nick knew the jump scare was coming. ?Maybe it does, but those thread have a way of circling back on themselves. I was told that it?s a little like those Deja Vu moments. Like time giving you the chance to make another choice.? He?d had those from time to time, but whether or not he?d chosen differently he couldn?t really say. Nick rolled to take another drink, then flopped to his back again. He took that moment to grab hold of Addie and squeeze her tight. ?I miss this. Why did we stop again? Oh, wait, you got boobs and it destroyed tent fort night.? He couldn?t stop the snort that came from him.

?I might be kind of jealous of you, and all you?ve managed to do in the last couple of years. You?ve changed, and part of me wonders where the shy girl that didn?t want to take credit for stuff went.? He loosened his hold, but didn?t let go of her. ?I?m pretty much the same as I was. Hell Adds, the only girl I ever even kissed has been you? when we were trying to figure out that whole French kissing thing. I suppose that makes me weird, but there?s no helping that now.?

When he jumped, she couldn't help the snicker that came after. It seemed the years had hardened the soft, shy girl until nothing really scared her anymore. What had happened in two short years to cause that? It wasn't as though she had said anything specific but just as he said, she had changed. Not all of the changes were good but they were differences just the same. The squeeze was met with a squeak of surprise before she hugged him back and let him go with an exasperated sigh even as he held on. ?Don?t you dare blame that on me. It?s not my fault that tent fort nights are such delicate things.?

Quiet for a just a brief moment, she filled the silence with swigs of this and that, haphazardly mixing liquors like it was nothing before she finally spoke again. ?You?re different, too. You just don?t see it. You?re more grown up, more mature. More-- wait, really? Oh you poor thing?? She filled his glass with some bottle or other to commiserate what was assuredly a terrible life. ?I?m a much better kisser now than I was. But still. That doesn?t make you weird, it just makes you? ummmmm, what?s a good word for it? inexperienced. That?s it. It?s adorable, really.?

?Inexperienced, is that like a polite way of saying pathetic? But yeah I kind of figured you were better at it. I promise not to try and swallow Avy?s face when I see her again.? He shook his head and lifted a shoulder. ?Whatever the word, I?m sure it fits. I just? let?s change the subject. I wanna know the details of what Avy felt, but I?m not really sure how to ask without being a nosy bastard. You died, and that?s not allowed to happen while I?m still alive. I?m just saying.? There had been a few talks about what was going on in her life, though it was mostly the good stuff and a glossing over of the event that brought Avy to Nick in the first place.

?If it wasn?t the madmen in the cowls, what happened, and leave nothing out.? He could be demanding, maybe it was the whiskey.. Or an adverse reaction to popcorn. That stuff can kill you. Serious talks though required serious positions, and nick pushed himself up so that he was sitting cross legged and facing her. Facing her back at least. Maybe that would be easier for her? Time would tell. His hand wanted to move for the glass once more, but instead he raised it to his tattooed shoulder to scratch a phantom itch. ?There?s nothing you can say that will change how I think of you.?

"No, it's not pathetic, oh my gods, Nikolai. Until I came back here, I'd never really kissed a guy or done anything and then it all changed. And now it's no big deal, I've kissed like... three actual guys here, it's whatever. I'm sure once you go back home Avy'll be all 'Nikolai, oh Nikolai, kiss me, I'm Averia'." in much the same way that the little sister from Hocus Pocus made fun of her older brother, Addie wrapped her arms around one of the pillows in the fort and made all sorts of gross kissing noises. The teasing stopped though when he changed the subject and a rather hard swallow killed the lump in her throat. She washed it down further with a trio of gulps straight from a bottle and set it aside before laying back to stare at the canopy of the fort.

"I think... I think I should probably start at the beginning in order for it to make sense. Otherwise it just sounds... stupid." Where was that bottle? She grabbed it for another drink but it still didn't quench the desert like feeling in her mouth. "I made a friend when I first came here and just before my birthday, um not the most recent but the one before, the eighteenth... he died. More precisely he was murdered. It was... god it was messed up. But it gets weirder from there... my mentor, Hope? The one who got me to Emerald? I was training at the Tower of Fire and, uh... sorta stumbled across his body. She wasn't the one who killed him, she just was preserving him."

She took a breath and a drink at that point, collecting her thoughts into something more coherent. It was hardly a coherent story, pieced together in bits and bobs until it formed a patchwork horror story almost worse than the movies they?d scared each other with growing up. ?I panicked? and then I hatched a plan to bring him back. God, Nick, I can?t believe I?m telling you this. Your dad actually, the one here, helped us make it happen. I brought Sandy back though? it worked?. And then the nightmares started. Once a week at first and then more and more until it was happening every night. So? I started, ugh, don?t hate me? but I had a friend and he offered to help. Sleeping pills, you know? Small time. But it got worse, like that sort of thing always does, and then here in July??

Addie trailed off. Her chest felt tight like she couldn?t breathe and her heart hammered wildly against her ribcage like it might very well break through. It took her longer this time to compose herself, likely thanks to the long pull from the tequila bottle, but finally she calmed herself enough to continue. ?Someone I trusted to help me tried to take advantage of that trust. And I nearly died. Or, I guess if Avy felt it, maybe I did? but Ro found me, got me help? I?ve been pretty much clean since. I? I haven?t seen anyone from the Order since Ghallon sent Kane and I here. I don?t think they know I?m here??

And that was everything. Or at least, mostly everything.

There was a lot in that explanation, though Nick was sure there were more details, but finer points were probably less necessary. He?d picked up on at least one thing that had irked him, but he?d leave his father?s involvement in this for another time. He took a handful of popcorn, then pelted her with a few of the kernels. He wasn?t going to show her pity, or anything that she?d expect from everyone she knew. ?I guess we?re both big dummies then. Only thing is that I know that is just like you to do. You probably would have done the same for me, so on that side I?m kind of grateful you haven?t changed as much as it seems.?

Nick bit his lower lip, a quirk that had rubbed off on him from several places really. ?It just seems weird, I mean I can see some nightmares coming for a while. But to keep having them, for them to get that bad? It sounds more like something went wrong than everything worked. Not that I know much about magic beyond?? He made a bowl out one palm and produced a flaming rose blossom. ?...stuff like this, and I?m not sure that?s really magic or something else.? He closed his fingers into a fist extinguishing the creation. ?What I do know, may have nothing to do with what happened. One of the first swords I ever made, I thought was perfect, but it had the tiniest flaw. It was something that wouldn?t have mattered if the weapon were more for show than use. Over time, as it took blows that little flaw became big, and it broke. I?m not saying that happened, but if it did, I hate that is was you that got broken.?

Laying back down, he reached for one of Addie?s hands, and held it between his own. ?We?ll fix that too while we?re at it. I don?t know how, and right now I?m pretty tired. I certainly don?t want to take all this down tonight.? He turned his head to look at her, squinting just a little in the light of the television. ?I also don?t feel like being alone tonight. Stay here with me? I?ll recite A is for Addie.?

?I?ve wondered if something went wrong? I?ve never done anything so complex before but I thought I did it right. I just don?t know how to fix it if I did mess it up. Not without hurting Sandy. Cane, different Cane not my? er? the Kane that came with me, says that stuff like that messes up the balance. But what?s done is done so what can I do but self medicate and hope it goes away, right?? She shrugged gently and set the tequila aside, dropping her hand afterwards to cup his. ?I?m not broken. I?m just different than I was.?

Addie turned her head to look at him in return, the dim light of the movie?s menu flickering across them both and just barely illuminating the fort?s insides. ?I?m not sure it can be fixed. Just like I?m not sure there?s a way for us? for you to get back home. But if there is, we?ll find it. I?ll get you back to here. And for now, you get to be my pillow.? She lifted his arm and snuck underneath to lay her head against his shoulder. Under other circumstances it would?ve been awkward at best but it was Nick and Nick was safe so she closed her eyes and gave him a little nod. ?I?ll stay here. And you can recite it if it makes you happy.?

Rhydin, October 3rd, 2016

?October means pumpkin everything is in,? Addie insisted. The white, unlabeled bakery box in her grasp smelled heavily of pumpkin spice, lending credence to her statement. Its twin had been dropped off only ten minutes prior at the Old Temple Baronial Manor up the street. The old cathedral was fast fading behind them amidst the sky reaching spires of the district. Ahead, the wall that separated Old Temple from Dockside was just within view. Beyond that, it was a hop, skip, and a jump to their final destination. It was a walk she had made numerous times but only thrice with Nikolai?s company. It meant no music piped into her ears by way of hot pink earbuds like usual but she didn?t mind. It was nice having someone to talk to on the way.

?And really, Aaaaaaavy likes pumpkin too, so you better get used to it.? Teasing limned her words and her smile as she jutted out an elbow to catch him in the side. The divider wall between Old Temple and Dockside marked a change of sorts. The buildings were older, not so nice. But she knew the place like the back of her hand so her alertness stayed the same, somewhere between aloof and barely paying attention. It was Rhydin. How scary could it be for a girl with no fears? That?s what she told herself at least.

?I like pumpkin, and not just because Avy likes it too. I just don?t get why it has to start so early. By the time November rolls around, a guy gets pumpkined out, yah know?? It had only been three trips, but Nick knew the turns well enough to drop into easy conversation with Addie. The wall Ahead was a landmark that he?d discovered also served as a time indicator of when they?d make it back to the house at Seaside. Unless there were some kind of Addie side adventure, There had been a few of those, mostly to get Nick into some clothes that according to Addie was more cool. He didn?t necessarily disagree, but it had been hard to pick and choose when you were browsing people's laundry lines.

It had only been a few weeks, but with nothing earth shattering happening it had been easy to fall into the habit of paying less attention to his surroundings. Her elbow caught his ribs, and had him laughing. ?Am I going to be mercilessly teased about this until my ass gets sent back?? He?d been about to say something different, but he was still avoiding saying words like Dying out loud. ?I?m kind of surprised that you haven?t picked up a scooter at least to make these trips. All those big numbers rolling in, I?d have figured you would start putting a garage full of vehicles together.? Not that he minded walking, it was just the only way he could think of to tease her back that wouldn?t hurt so bad.

"There's no such thing as pumpkined out, only weak men and babies." Addie lifted her chin and set her shoulders as if to punctuate the point. Skipping stepping over the sidewalk seam that separated the two districts, she turned right from the main street and down a side road. Late in the afternoon, the sun stretched long shadows down the narrow path, leaving Addie and Nick to drift in and out of the patches of sun that managed the permeate the narrow slits between the district?s taller buildings. Adjusting the bakery box from both hands to under one arm, she gave him a light shrug. There were things left unsaid, it was likely better that way. ?I prefer walking. Plus? I can?t drive. Everything sort of went to shit back home before Dad could teach me. And Michi wanted to keep the garage for studio space, so that sort of settled it. The exercise is good, right??

Exercise was always good, but he?d never admit that to her, unless she asked like she just had. ?Okay, so I like the walk. You don?t have to look so smug about it.? He wasn?t looking where he was going. Nick?s eyes were up, he did like Dockside, with so many low angled roof tops, and a myriad of small alleyways to tempt him. ?Besides that, with all those cookies you keep feeding me I need the extra exercise.? He put his hand against his stomach and tried to make it look like he?d been taken out of shape by her. ?But I still say you should get a boatload of cars, just so I can borrow one a day for a month. You know I can teach you right? To drive I mean.? He brought his eyes back on the path, there were piles of pallets outside what was clearly a tiny warehouse. He wouldn?t pay attention to those at all if they weren?t in such a state of disrepair. All he would need was to catch himself on a rusty nail and need to get a tetanus shot. Something ahead had him slowing though. A hint of purple, or maybe it was too dark for purple, he?d only seen it for an instant.

Nick?s eyes lingered on the point for several moments before he kicked himself for being paranoid again. The first trip here he?d been spooked by the sounds of running feet. Not that he?d been hearing things but there were a lot of people who found any number of reasons to run the alleys of Dockside. The pair of sailors had passed them by without even saying two words. The whole incident had Addie in stitches, and him blushing.

Don't look so smug about it? You could bet your ass that Addie was smug. Thankfully for Nick, Addie?s eyes were on the road or at least the twists and turns that could easily lead them astray. Reaching over, she poked at his stomach with an exasperated roll of her eyes. ?You love the cookies, don?t even act like you don?t. Bob paid me a lot for them but now that Jacen?s Keeper of Earth, I don?t think that?s going to keep up. So I gotta save what I?ve gotta and not be crazy rockstar-like with my spending.? Plus the Seaside house had been expensive to buy outright, even with Michi?s help. In a city as walkable as Rhydin, she was going to take advantage of the fresh air and exercise. Surely she?d regret it come winter time but it wasn?t as though the cold bothered her. The snow was a pain in the ass, sure, but the cold? No big deal. Sidestepping a knocked over trash can, she was careful not to step in anything gross and nearly missed Nick?s staring. When she looked up again, nothing seemed amiss. ?So maybe you?ll have to teach me another time or something. Ro doesn?t know how to drive, so I can?t ask him either. Michi can! Yeah, don?t worry about it then, if I gotta learn, I?ll learn from Michi.?

Addie looked down at her Chucks as they turned the corner down a narrow path that would shorten the trip to the Dockside manor by at least a few minutes. ?Ew. I think I got Dockside sludge on my shoe.?

?I love the cookies too much. That?s what I?ve been trying to say.? She seemed to be doing all right, but then again Nick had very little on the expense side of things that included bills. ?Maybe wherever Bob is now he can still make purchases.? Or was that some kind of twilight island thing? He checked out Addie?s shoe in passing. ?You?re the one that likes to go this way, I?d be surprised if that is the first victim you?ve had. Maybe you should hope that it is Dockside sludge and not homeless dude scat that you found.? It was tight quarters after that turn, he actually had to back half a pace off of Addie in order to walk normally. He doubted that the place was wide enough for a full sized city sidewalk. It did keep them from having to go all the way to the main drag though, so he?d take the confinement. ?Maybe next time you?ll bypass this and do things like a normal person. That would make you less fun though.? He shoved his hand into his pocket, not really looking for anything, he was just trying to keep from accidentally smacking it into her ass as they walked.

?I don?t know. Half the reason he was able to pay me so well was because he was stripping mining the Isle? so who knows. Maybe I?ll see?? It was worth a try at the very least. The money was nice. The house was nice. Not worrying about bills was really nice. Cutting him a derisive look aside, she made a disgusted sound at the prospect of having such things on the bottom of her shoe. Adjusting the box under her arm so that she could keep tight to the shortcut?s wall, she looked over her shoulder to him as he fell back a step. ?Next time liiiiike??

It was a question that quickly left her mind as she turned one of the darker corners and came to an abrupt stop. The way ahead was blocked and all over again, it was like she couldn?t breathe thanks to the stifling heat of Nosgoth in high summer. Her first thought was to back up the way she had been coming from but Nick was that way and already the cloaked figures had turned to face the source of noise.

?N-Nick? Nick, we gotta go?,? she hissed and tried to shuffle backwards.

He looked up as Addie stopped, his shoulder making contact with her. Plum, it was the shade he?d seen before and it was the one he was looking at now. Nick moved to the side, hand going to Addie?s stomach as he was going to turn her around. A large portion of him wanted to charge forward, and make the duo pay for crimes against his family. He included Addie in that, though they shared nothing more than the bond of growing up together. He might have done just that, if he were alone, if it were anyone with him except for Addie. This was the reason he had come, to keep those guys from her. He moved past her, putting himself between Addie and the pair of alleyway guards.

?Go Addie! Don?t look back!? He was right on her heels, slowing to make the first of the turns and head back towards the exit to the alley. He could hear them behind him, heavy footfalls that were pacing them. Nick should have understood then, but he was too eager to get the girl to safety. They weren?t chasing. They were herding the two of them for an even larger crowd of cloaked zealots. When they came into view his mistake was obvious, where they?d been facing two, they now faced four, and the other two were coming up quickly.

?****, ****, ****, no, no, no!? She shook her head as returning the way they came proved to be a dead end of sorts as well. Although she hadn?t looked back, she could hear heavier steps behind Nick?s light feet. Ahead it was twice as bad. But the alley was narrow and that afforded her the slightest advantage since they were only able to file down it two by two. They were quick but Addie was faster. A grasping hand tried to catch her and she answered by flinging the bakery box in her hands at the frontmost figure. It smacked them right in the face and judging by the startled grunt, caught them off guard enough to give her a second and a half, maybe more. Shoving back against Nick, she tried to push them to the middle ground between their forward and flanking assailants.

?You gotta go, Nick. Get out of here,? she said through her teeth. Though he was certain he was there to protect her, she had flung her arms wide to keep him from moving up toward the larger group. Of all the days to leave her weapons at home it had to be today.

?Come with us peacefully and we?ll spare the boy, resist and he?ll suffer a fate worse than death.? The voice came from behind her and she twisted a look over her shoulder at the speaker. Of the two, it was surprisingly the smaller figure. Androgynous in tone, she couldn?t peg whether they were male or female even in frame. Addie shook her head without hesitation.

?Nuh uh, that?s not how this works. I know this game.? She tried to stall as her gaze darted around the alley in search of something, anything that could help. To one side, a dented garbage can leaned against a closed dumpster while on the opposite, a rusted fire escape clung to the crumbling brick building that stood sentinel over the budding conflict. Various detritus littered the alley floor but none of it looked particularly useful. As she spoke, metallic scalework spread down her forearms until it wrapped her hands and tipped her fingers in dagger like talons.

?Then you will both suffer. Is that what you wish?? The smaller cloaked figure tilted its head at Addie?s back, watching her every move and the man that stood in between them. They hadn?t counted on that though it didn?t come as a surprise considering the orders that had brought them there to begin with.

?No but I know what you want and I know if you hurt me, you won?t get it. So you won?t hurt him either because I know a secret that?ll ruin everything.? Addie donned a smile that glimmered sharply in the darkening alley. What was the secret? Well, she wasn?t telling but it was likely just that she had nothing and was hoping Nick had a better idea than trying to fight six on two.

He?d let himself get lax, and this was the result. Too much time between getting here and finding Addie. All those days where the worst thing that happened was getting walked in on while showering had made him believe that maybe he was carrying on too much. That maybe he didn?t need the weapons he?d taken. ?And I know that you?ll do that no matter what.? He leaned down and grabbed hold of a broken piece of two by four, something that had once been part of those pallets they?d passed. It wasn?t much of a weapon, it certainly wasn?t his own little surprise for these guys. It would be necessary for what he had in mind though. To Addie it was refuse and scattered items. To Nick it was a playground that he knew pretty well. ?Fire escape, be ready Addie? I?m gonna pull a real Nikolai out here.? The catch phrase that seemed to embody everything that was spectacular, and stupid. Nick turned quickly and charged the two coming up behind. He had no intentions of attacking, but he did want them to back a little because he needed the running room. Leaping from one foot, the toes of the other caught hold of the wall and propelled him upward. He planted his hands on the dumpster top got a foot beneath him and leaped for the fire escape ladder, catching hold of the bottom rung and riding it down with a squealing racket that would have had him covering his ears if he?d had hands available. Maybe it would be enough for Addie to unfreeze and start climbing.

Nick clung to the piece of wood, raising his body?s temperature, then channeling that into the wood in his hands. Maybe, just maybe they?d get lucky and some of that muck would be a little more that water or stale piss. He looked for Addie to know she needed to climb, and dropped the flaming brand to the ground. ?Please let that be a busted fifth of something.? He mumbled the words to himself, hoping that Addie wouldn?t catch it and know exactly how hairbrained his scheme had been.

The groan she gave him was subtle in response to his oft crazy plan but it was better than nothing. The girl had come a long way from the awkward, all limbs teenager that had left Nosgoth in a hurry over two years ago. Ungraceful movements had been streamlined into controlled caution, fluid and smooth in the way she set into motion. Nikolai rushed backward toward the two behind them but Addie moved forward toward the four ahead. The bakery box in her grasp was flung into the hood of the foremost figure and she followed it up with a slash of her claws at a newly exposed face and a foot to shove them back. Not nearly as acrobatically gifted as Nick, she still vaulted the smaller garbage can, scrambled onto the closed dumpster and leapt to the fire escape.

?C?mon, go, go, Nick!? She said frantically, taloned fingers curling around the escape?s rungs as she hauled herself upwards. The explosion of motion down below said they didn?t have much time before the blooming fire would prove not enough of a deterrent to the half dozen blood thirsty robes.

He was already moving, swinging around the ladder and climbing behind Addie. ?I don?t think that?s gonna stop em for?? He looked down and the flames were already being smothered by a cloak that one of them had removed. ?Scratch that, we need to move!? When they hit the stairs, Nick?s hand went to Addie?s back, so he could look over his shoulder and not run into her as they ascended the flights of rusted metal. The sound of the ladder descending once again told them both how far ahead they?d managed to get. To him it was one thing, not far enough. Maybe they could increase the distance once they hit the rooftop.

?There, that building with the busted smokestack! That?s Panacea isn?t it?? That put Dockside Manor a bit to the north. ?You can do this, just?don?t think too hard about it!? Thinking about jumping from one roof to another, that would bring in logic, and there was nothing logical about it. ?Deep breath, hold my hand and?? He didn?t finish, just gave a tug and took off at full speed towards the gap between buildings. Addie?d never really enjoyed this, other than taking pictures. That?s why there were so many that had him, Avy and Alex, but lacked Addie. She?d seen it done, knew it could be. A split second before leaping to the slightly lower rooftop, he wondered if she?d stop and send him falling to the alley below.

The unrestrained heights were already knotting her stomach but worse was the sound of rustling robes and the groan of strained iron as their pursuers climbed up behind them. It was reminiscent of choking heat and guttural languages she couldn?t understand. There was no way she was going back to that. Her clammy hand closed tightly on Nick?s, flying like the wind at his side in a flurry of raven hair and wide sapphire eyes.

?Nick, I can?t. I can?t!? What couldn?t she do? Jump? Let them catch her? It was an even split and in the end, fear won out. She closed her eyes and let his momentum guide her. The city felt so different when experienced from above and for a moment, she felt like she was flying. Oh ****, that?s not flying. That?s falling. With style. The leap over the gap wasn?t nearly far enough to clear it but she let his hand go in time to latch onto the roof?s lip for a quick scrabble upwards.

Nick hit the roof next to her, had they not been holding hands, he?d have cleared the gap. Landing in cat, he muscled up and onto the roof ready to catch hold of her if she happened to overbalance and fall backwards. ?You did really really good? and I wish I could say you won?t have to do it again.? Shouts on the building across from them could be heard, and the first of the six figures emerged and started towards them. ?But I can?t, because we?re running out of time.? He put an arm out and backed up until it bumped into her, his attempt to get her moving again. To keep her from thinking about the thing she just did.

Fortunately the next roof was higher, and there was no gap between them as the two buildings seemed to share a wall. Nick did a quick double step wall run, latched onto the rooftop with one arm and one leg then reached down to give Addie something to shoot for. Shoot for seemed to be the idea going around though as something clattered off the wall beneath him.

Addie refused to look back, even when brick crumbled under the weight of a heavy spell to her right. It was one of the only times in her life where she had been thankful for her height and no sooner was Nick up the second wall that she was scrambling up the worn facade of the rooftop. It was a reminder of what she stood to lose should she stop running and for a few moments she was incredibly grateful that Hope had insisted on such long endurance exercises during training. Though she hadn?t looked back, she did look down and any remaining color in her face drained away.

?We are so high up?? She said softly, mostly to herself. It was nearly lost to the shouts of their pursuers and that fact quickly jarred her back into motion. ?Just go! I?m right behind you.?

?Don?t you freeze up on me Addie!? The robed men were getting closer. Alone he could have outpaced them perhaps. But each time that Addie needed to stop and do a cut check was precious seconds lost. Maybe if he?d had Alex with him it would have been different. The two of them could have surrounded Addie and maybe keep her from over thinking where they actually were in relation to the street far below. In Nick?s head there was only one real solution, he needed to get Addie to a level where she was comfortable. That meant down, the only problem was that everything at this point was going up even higher. There was one path, but he was sure she was going to hate it.

Where the building they were standing on met the next the rooftop rose higher, but that building was also a bit wider, twenty feet below was another level to the building, but it would require precision to leap from the edge, over the sidewalk and land on the patch of roof that was ten feet wide if they were lucky. She?d be right behind him, that was what she had said. ?Come on Addie! Do what I do!? Nick took a last look at the half dozen men, only one was straggling behind. It was likely that one had gotten the rest onto the rooftop. It probably meant that he was the most dangerous of them in terms of pursuit to. It was too bad that except for the exceptionally tall one, they were indistinguishable.

He took off along the front edge of the building, leaping towards the wall that faced the street on the next one over. Three steps he took along that wall before losing the ability to stay high. He tucked, hit the lower roof and rolled. Rather than keep going, he turned to check Addie, to see if she truly were, right behind him.

Had they been on the ground, this wouldn?t have been an issue, or so Addie told herself. On the ground she could run like the wind. The rooftops were Nick and Alex?s domain, a fact proven by the deft ease with which Nick jumped and climbed like they weren?t twenty or more feet up.

He jumped.

She stayed behind.

On the roof?s edge, she rocked onto her toes as if trying to convince herself to follow through. Nick was already on the lower roof and that couldn?t have been nearly as scary down there, right? Addie backed up half a dozen steps and took a deep breath, shaking out her arms.

?Just like in Aladdin, Addie. All you gotta do is jump,? she told herself. It was then that the first heavy footsteps hit the far end of the roof she was currently on. That led to a second pair and then a third while the fourth and fifth lagged behind. No looking back or else you won?t move forward. With a hopstep, she lurched into a sprint and took off. The roof?s edge came quickly but when she reached it, she didn?t stop, arms and legs flailing as she flew across the gap. That was a really narrow landing strip though. It begged the question of why she closed her eyes at the last moment instead of watching where she was going. Maybe she didn?t want to see it if she missed and went splat instead. Perhaps it would be better than facing the fervor of zealots with no task bigger than dragging her back to figurative hell. Unlike Addie, they had no qualms about jumping from the roof after the younger adults.

Nick was moving along the edge of the roof back towards Addie. She was coming down dangerously close to that edge. When she got close enough, he bumped her inwards, a move that nearly cost him as he slid over the edge himself, but caught the edge with his hands. He muscled his way back to the top, but those zealots were already in the air. ?I hope you?ve still got them claws out!? Ten feet wasn?t much of a runway, but he charged the wall, leaped and found a bit of traction, and just flipped backwards. Flames erupted in the air as he lashed out with his other leg. An arc of fire that even if it didn?t knock the first of the zealots from the roof forced his robes to to flare up. The second was already hitting the roof between him and addie, and there wasn?t even heartbeats left before the third fell.

He wasted no motion, turning and punching out at the third man, his fists flaming up on impact. Addie?d have to deal with the one closest to her. He already had his hands full with the one in front of him. How long would it be before the first one was able to roll enough to put his clothing out. Maybe they?d get lucky and he?d roll right off the roof. One flaming zealot falling from the sky like some twisted organic comet. It was certain they didn?t have time for a prolonged fight, The rest would be dropping in at any moment. The man across from him was no slouch, Nick?s opening salvo was timed almost perfectly with his landing, and the blows came easy. Now he seemed to have factored in those flaming limbs and was effectively keeping them at bay. No time for this! The words were a pounding shriek in his head, but knowing and doing were always two different things.

Nick threw another punch, followed by one of those spinning kicks that trailed fire. The zealot dodged it smoothly as he had several times already. This time would be different as Nick reached up grabbed hold of the man?s hood and pulled it backwards. He let himself drop over the side, letting go of the cloak and making a last grab for the rooftop. It bit into palms that were still smoking, their heat melting the seal that kept water from leaking into the building. He brought his feet up, using his toes to give him enough of a boost to pull himself back up.

Addie cried out when he fell for the sake of making sure she made it up but he didn?t go far before he was climbing back up again. She had little time to worry and not much room to work with when two plum clad warriors joined them on the rooftop. It had been well over two years since the last time she had seen a member of the Order of Orion but as clear as day, there they were, intent on killing Nick and taking her far, far away. The Order was made up of more than capable warriors with an unabashed lack of qualms about dying for their cause. Big and bulky beneath the weight of his outfit, the man that came at Addie was far slower than the girl, at least at first. As his first grab missed her, she powered a pair of rabbit punches for where the man?s floating rib should have been.

Her closed fist impacted against the thick armor worn beneath the robes and she winced at the audible crunch of her knuckles. Note to self, don?t punch walls or people wearing enough armor to practically be walls. Shaking out her fingers, the talon tips glinted in the sunlight as she slashed out at his face, raking the razors over his flesh and eliciting a pained yell. He grabbed at her wrist, catching her before she could pull back and wound him again. With a yank, he nearly sent both of them toppling from the ledge but at the last moment she dropped any weight she had on her legs to sink like a stone to the rooftop rather than the ground a story below. The man tumbled with her in a tangle of metal scales and plum robes amidst the grunts and growls of close quarters combat.

Never had she been forced to take one of the Orionites on by herself but she had seen them fight. They were vicious and bloodthirsty but she barely registered the rending of her forearm?s flesh by the hooked thorns protruding from her assailant?s armoring. Instead, she focused on getting him off of her as quickly as possible. Putting long legs to good use, she wriggled her knees between them enough to plant a foot to the man?s abdomen. A hard kangaroo kick sent him rolling off and she clambered to her feet with a look for Nick. She saw him just as he climbed back up and before they could engage once more with the plum robed men, she grabbed for his hand and ran for the roof?s edge. It didn?t matter where they jumped so long as it wasn?t anywhere near the purple clad warriors.

?Why it it always raining men when you?re around Addie.? Okay, it was a horrible joke, but he?d just been so relieved to see her still up there. Nick went to the side of the building and looked around. He could see several options that he?d like to try, but nothing he?d want to do with Addie being right there. There was only one real option left that had a margin of success for someone new. At least she had adrenaline on her side. ?Shit ? You?re going to hate this? and I guess I can get you a new pair of whatever kind of pants those are.? New might be pushing it. He could probably find a place to Nick them from. He pointed at a spot that was impossible to reach with any kind of jump. ?That?s where we?re going, that stairwell over there. Don?t look at me like that we can do this. We?re going to use that roof right there. I know it?s somebody?s house, can?t remember whose, but.. Jump slide and jump.. It?s a cinch!? It wasn?t a cinch, and she?d probably get seasick at the end of it. It was the easiest way.

?You want me to go first? I might be able to catch you on the other side? of course you might end up flashing me too so think hard.? He needed to keep her calm, or himself calm. The jokes came when he was nervous right? He?d say both at once but the landing point was too small. It would have to be one at a time.

?That was just bad, Nikolai.? She groaned at his terrible joke and looked off over the edge of the roof. Her heart was pounding in her throat, barely taking the edge off the gashes in her arm as they trickled sticky red down toward her fingers. Jump, slide, jump. That was easy, right? Focusing on the directions, she gave him a single nod.

?You go. I?ll follow. Go fast, we?re running out of time!? She let go of him and took a few steps back, glancing over her shoulder at the quick approach of a second wave of Orionites, hot on their tails.

Well, she was still in a heightened state, but at least she was still able to call him out for horrible jokes. Nick flashed her the I can?t help it grin, then backed up several steps and ran as hard as he could. He hit the edge with a one foot take off, was quick to pull his legs back together. Sometimes falling seemed to take forever, and the impact with the slope of that other roof probably spoke volumes about why it felt that way. He barely had time to think as his speed carried him swiftly down the shingled halfway point. He jammed one foot down and leaped forward once more toward the circular stairwell that was coming up way too fast to do more than work on instinct. The impact sent him careening downwards, which was probably fortunate if Addie was close enough behind him. He managed to catch himself and stop the fall eventually though two of his fingers were bent at odd angles. No time to think about the pain, he was looking for a flying Addie, and would save her the extra fall down the steps if he could.

It was surprising how small the Orionites looked on that roof he?d just been atop. , that only took a second to flash through his mind before Addie came crashing into his life once again. Maybe she?d be luckier on her landing than he was. Still he braced himself to catch her, arms going wide, and bending so that his legs could take the impact of her body. Only after he?d made sure she was as safe as possible would he tell her about his hand. ?This is going to sound like another bad joke but? pull my fingers.? Disjointed, certainly, broken it was entirely possible, but he knew they didn?t work in the position they were sticking out now. He looked back at the roof, and started down the steps. ?Later, right now we have to keep moving.? He?d seen them backing up to make a run at the same route they?d just seen Addie take.

This time around, she truly was right behind him, leaping only seconds after he did. Shingles scraped through her jeans and tore up the heels of her hands as she tried to slow her fall, streaking the roof with red in a macabre display of survival instinct at its best. Just before the steep incline abruptly ended, she screamed and jumped once more, keeping the kicking feet to a minimum as she crashed into Nick on the staircase. It was a jumble of limbs and ouch but with no time to grouse about the pain, she straightened up and glanced down at his hand.

?Oh crap? those are? definitely broken.? She winced. But broken bones healed, especially with her talents, so she turned down the stairs, intent on the ground level. As she did, the upper edge of the staircase was blasted by a particularly powerful spell that sent debris raining down upon them. Grabbing for Nick, she sought to shove him down the stairs in front of her, turning back to angle a look up toward the way they had come from.

?That was just rude!? In a fit of frustration and rage, she stood exactly where she was to focus almost the entirety of her attention into weaving a counter that would hopefully give them more time to make their escape. Crumbling cement dusted her hair white and the metal steps swayed beneath her feet. Undaunted, she furrowed her brow and let loose the force of the spellwork. Destruction was seldom the name of her game but in the name of protecting Nick (and herself), she was going to try at the very least. Et cadet, and fall you will. Air above, make it be. Et descensus, falling still. Earth below, return to thee.

All at once the first Orionite plunged like a rock, dropping mid-air to crash onto the roof?s incline. He didn?t stop there though, blowing right through the building?s ceiling as if the earth itself was pulling him down to the ground. The gaping hole in the pitch would at least put a damper on following Addie and Nick, so satisfied with her work, she ran down the shaking staircase after Nick. Three blocks. She recognized where they were. Three blocks is all it would take to reach the Dockside Manor and hopefully safety.

Rhydin, October 19th, 2016

?And that was TRASH with one hell of an unplugged playthrough of their new album Highs and Lows. Thanks for stopping by, girls. And random guy with them. You?re cool too. Pick up the album today! Thanks for listening to Richard Head with WBGR, because Bigger is Better.? The sound effect cued up by the DJ was more than lewd and sent the girls giggling in the background. ?Oh myyyyy. Now a word from our sponsors.?

WBGR?s station in Dragon?s Gate was small, despite their station identifier, but they did their best to make up for their size with sheer moxie. It had blown a good portion of their monthly budget to get the up and coming band into the studio, but by the gods, they had done it. There had even been donuts. With donuts in each hand, Michi had led the way out and on the narrow street upon which the station sat, the group split. After all, they could only get Misery out of school for so long before they called her parents to report her truant. So Michi took the banshee one way and Addie took Nick the other.

?So there?s this place down the street from DGO. It?s definitely not there in our time, but they have some pretty bomb tacos and cheap beer. Like even better tacos than Ray Ray?s Taco Shack did.? Riding the high of a well played set, she was all talk as they strolled. It was a nice sort of normal. She could almost get used to it.

Nick had been made to watch from the tech booth, something he might have taken personally and acted out by twisting a knob here and there. What that might have done to the live show he didn?t know, but no one was screaming at him. Maybe that part of the board didn?t connect to anything. ?Tacos sound good, can?t remember the last time I had them.? He was giving a last wave to MnM, something that he?d started to call them when they were together. It too was likely backlash from having to pose as someone who preferred the boys.

?You guys sounded good, I?m a little surprised at the venue though. Doesn?t Michi have an in with WHAM? Don?t like girlfriend points trump almost everything?? His face held a smirk, and trouble twinkled in his eye as he looked sidelong at Addie. ?Lead on oh guru to the taco universe. I?ll be your first disciple. Together we?ll convert the entire city and make you queen? or taco mistress? I don?t know. I lost track of the joke at the word taco.?

Nick had learned from experience. He hadn?t left the house today without taking every precaution. His pilfered hammers were concealed beneath his too long t-shirt. Strapped to his back was the newly won shield, though sometimes he thought Michi was giving him the eye over it. That was probably his imagination. He?d even hounded Addie about bringing something with her that would put a dent into any set of armor. ?Seriously, I could eat. Claire keeps making my runs longer, but she has a real eye for obstacles.?

?WHAM got the exclusive on the release party. We had to make rounds for a few smaller outlets. I think we nailed most of them save for KLIT-AM 900 for obvious reasons. And, ya know, don?t want it to seem like we?re only hanging with Yas for that. Michi legit likes her.? Addie giggled, tucking her hands into the pockets of a hoodie two or three sizes too big. Likely stolen from Ro. Girls are sneaky like that. It also helped hide the shape of the revolver tucked at the small of her back and the switchblade just inside the right pocket. The former could do damage. The latter, less so, but it felt more natural in her grasp.

?Did you ever get to see the twins? training routines? That shit was brutal. Hope used to make me run steps in the Tower of Fire and just for fun she?d keep turning the heat up. Nevermind we were in a tower. Made of fire. In the middle of a volcano.? Rolling her eyes, she kept pace with him, leading the way left and then right, straight and then right again.

Nick?s brows descended slightly as he looked over at Addie. ?Are you really asking me if I?d ever seen Avy move with precision and grace? Or are you asking how hard it was for me to tear my attention from her?? He?d seen it, wanted to see it again. ?Hope sounds a little sadistic. Did she force you to touch each step? You know I?d hate that, no matter how good for me it might be.? He may have been looking at Addie, but ever since their last outing to Old Temple and Dockside manors, Nick had been expanding his field of view. The focus may be on her, but he?d long since stopped devoting all of himself to it.

He?d seen something suspicious, it was enough to have him angling to the right and drifting across the street. He?d put an arm around Addie, in a you are my closest friend kind of way. Even with how he felt about Avy, he knew that Addie?d been that since they were tiny. He shot a look at oncoming traffic. Something that took years of experience on Rhydin streets to perfect, as they crossed halfway up the block, much to the dismay of the cars coming at them. In his head if they were being shadowed, it would be a dead giveaway.

?You should train more? you should train alone.? By now he?d given her enough indications to know that he wasn?t fond of the man that she was squire to. ?Or, you know? with me. But somehow I think when I?m heading out, you're just heading to bed.? At least when Ro was around that?s how it seemed to him. He didn?t hate it. He?d be happy so long as she was. Nick suspected that the sentiment might be shared. He also suspected that the bond between her and Avy was even stronger.

?I promise that I?ll stick to the streets, that you don?t have to do what I do, but I have to do things or I get bored.? Hope might have hated him as a trainee, Nick couldn?t keep things simple. An empty stairwell to him was something that his feet should never touch.

?No, Nikolai, I?m not asking if you?ve stared at Averia?s ass while she got ahead of you. I?m asking if you?ve seen how she and Alex got that freaking athletic. It doesn?t just happen running rooftops, you know.? She elbow checked him for emphasis. ?Hope was a fantastic mentor though. I wouldn?t have advanced as quickly as I did without her. Even if she made me touch every step during my runs.?

Since their run in with the Order of Orion in Dockside, each step she took felt heavier, as if it carried a plethora of possibilities, few of which were positive. They had found her, it was only a matter of time before they did again. And this time, she doubted she?d be able to drop one through a roof. ?Look, I train enough by myself but if it?ll make you feel better, we can train swords stuff together if you want. Not, like, every day or whatever, but maybe a couple times a week. None of that buttcrack of dawn stuff though. I am so not a morning person. Deal??

?Deal.? He rubbed at the spot her elbow had connected. It hadn?t particularly hurt, but it did cover the slight snort at her comment about Averia. ?I have seen it, sometimes the only way to get Alex to go to any kind of training was to tell him I?d be there too.? The talk about mentors only served to remind him that after tomorrow he might have to adapt to someone new. It wasn?t something he looked forward to. ?I guess you got lucky, I kind of feel like I?m in limbo. Not that Claire wouldn?t still work with me, but maybe I was fooling myself with the why of going after the shield. Partly anyway. There was some part of me that needed it to be her. Maybe I?m just trying to make up for some of the stupid things I did.?

?Even if you don?t practice with me, you should with someone.? Talking about roof running was enough to have him looking up. Was that a shadow up there? If so what caused it? ?Think we could move a little faster Addie? I?m feeling a little? exposed I guess.? It had occurred to them that the more public her activities became the easier she would be to find. ?You know that them finding you is probably my fault. I?d change that if I could find a way to. Maybe if there were a way to not come back. I?m not sure where that would leave you though. How long before things get bad again, and force you to make the same kind of choices??

He dropped his attention from the roofs to the girl next to him, catching a glimpse of that odd shadow of hers against a parked car. ?Or you?re faced with another similar situation that you just won?t let stand.? A reference to her bringing back Sandy, though he wasn?t going to get too specific about that with her. She?d told him as much as she was willing to at the time. ?I get why you did it. It?s who you are, and probably why everyone loves you.? She might have elbowed him, but Nick?s retaliation came in the form of an arm around her shoulders and a sound squishing.

?Meaning you don?t want me to be alone. Contrary to popular belief, I?m capable of taking care of myself, you know.? Try as she might to not get offended, she couldn?t help the tinge of bitterness in her tone. It was reminiscent of Kane and how he didn?t seem think she was able to walk a straight line without him there to make sure she didn?t trip. ?You know Aunt Claire?ll help you even if she says she can?t or won?t. For all her big talk about not getting involved in things, she has a knack for doing exactly that anyways.?

He looked up but she was looking forward and side to side, keeping the ground level covered with intermittent sweeps of her gaze. While one shadow of hers maintained the same angle upon the ground as Nick?s, the other danced and changed with the winds, gravitating toward Nick on her opposite side. It had a habit of doing that, interjecting itself between herself and others. But after all this time it was merely a side note at this point. ?I don?t think I could do it again. There?s a cost for everything and sometimes it?s just? so much when you upset the balance of things. While I don?t regret giving Sandy a second chance, I can?t help but wish it hadn?t come at the cost of my own well being and, well, you having to come here.? She paused. ?That sounds mean. I don?t mean it that way, I just wish you hadn?t had to come back for me when you?ve got so much back home.?

Her pace quickened, urged on not only by his words but the odd sort of prickling feeling you get on the back of your neck when someone?s watching you. Addie glanced over her shoulder, looking for purple in the crowd of passersby. She saw none but that didn?t mean they weren?t there. ?We?ll take care of things and we?ll get you home. I promise.?

?Not at all Addie, meaning find somebody good that you can learn from. Someone more interested in helping you than sleeping with you.? Nick had already said enough ways what he thought of her current situation. He wouldn?t harp anymore on the details, he would see her respected if he had his way. Some choices weren?t his to make. ?I know, but I won?t risk asking Aunt Claire. If something were to happen, I?d never forgive myself.?

The accelerated pace felt better to Nick. It seemed like they were moving with a purpose, not the tacos, just something else nagging in the back of his mind. ?I?m not so sure how I feel about you not doing it again. Relieved I guess, so maybe we?re both mean. It?s too late to go back and stop what happened, but next time you?ll be able to see things more clearly.? Something in him knew there would inevitably be a next time for her. That only she could make that final choice. ?And, I mean don?t take this the wrong way, but given a choice I?d throw you over my shoulder kicking and screaming and make you go back.? That hadn?t come yet, the choice of being able to force it to happen. There were no guarantees either what they?d find when they got there. ?All things being equal, I?m just as sure that I?d make the trip all over again. For you, for Avy? but for me too. I found something here that I didn?t know I had, that I likely wouldn?t know was there if I?d stayed.? They passed yet another guy who took too much time gawking at Addie. When would she learn to wear real clothes?

Addie was famous, and beautiful, something Nick would reluctantly admit to only because she?d been too close to him growing up. Sometimes all he saw was the awkward girl he knew. It was unsettling to see all these men following her with their eyes. That was it! The eyes, not what he?d thought before, full of lurid thoughts. They had an even more eager look, almost maniacal. How many had that made? Why did the street seem so empty now? Nick?s attention was now split between his inner thoughts, the oddness of the world at large, and trying to come up with something more to say to Addie. Would it be any wonder that he stumbled over a crack in the sidewalk? That would be how it looked, but when he had time to reflect on it he would swear that he was pushed. Almost like a hand between his shoulders gave enough of a shove to make his toe catch the concrete. The next thing he?d felt was the spell rebounding off the Shield of Gondar. There would be no attempts at intimidation this time, no ultimatums for Addie. The Orionites had come, and they fully intended to take him out of their way first.

Muscle memory had Nick acting even faster than his reflexes would have. His pitch forward quickly became a roll that had the shield clattering on the ground as he passed over it diagonally. He rose up, running and grabbing hold of Addie and pulling her into the act as well. He lagged behind, not much, just enough to force them to try and direct their attacks around the space the shield covered.

?It doesn?t matter who I train with and what they want or what was done in the past. It doesn?t matter because I?m with Ro and he makes me happy and he was there for me when a lot of bad shit happened and still likes me despite it. So just drop it, okay?? He was exasperating her, that much was evident, and it put her on the defensive when she felt like her choices were being attacked and picked at. She didn?t get a chance to say much more though because Nick was stumbling, something unlike him considering his nearly acrobatic grace. But before she could put a hand out to steady him, the pre-shock of the spell made the hair on the back of her neck stand up a millisecond before it blew into the shield. Only vaguely aware of the fact she had screamed out of surprise, Nick?s hands on her were enough to jar her out of her shock and into motion.

There was no negotiation this time, only a well placed offensive that sought to incapacitate her and likely kill him. Much like the first time they had been attacked though, neither Addie nor Nick planned on going quietly. Pulling the pistol from the small of her back, she thumbed the safety and ducked low to present a smaller target for their assailants. From afar, Addie was a lousy shot with the thing, having never used it in a practical setting greater than shooting bottles by the train tracks with Michi. But up close, that?s where she wasn?t afraid to pull the trigger. Could they outrun the cultists a second time? After all, they?d only barely escaped the first time and that was by sheer dumb luck.

?Nick, let?s go. Run, run!? Unfortunately it looked like tacos would have to wait for another time.

Underprepared would have been a good description of their last encounter. Not this time, as quickly as Addie had the hammer cocked on her weapon, Nick had a hammer in his right hand. It was hard to say what was more menacing in it, the demonic claw, or the broken bone that it held. He hadn?t needed to be told to run, they were present in numbers again. ?No going up this time!? A quick glance had given away pursuit on the levels above. It wasn?t exactly like the ambush in the alleyway. There they?d been herded, here they were simply being denied access to what was (for Nick at least) one of their strengths. It was smart, but in order to keep them from rising, that would mean maintaining the presence up there. In his head he knew that meant they weren?t up against a single group this time, but at least two.

Security, there was that in having a hard metal plate on his unguarded side. There was also the feeling of being limited, both by the straps that bound it, and the inability to use his body in ways Nick was familiar with. Spell casting, it was at least slower than say a fully jacketed round from a pistol. Nick gave up security for becoming a hard target. With luck they were out to eliminate him first anyway.

Nick had made no secret to his minor raids on his father?s energy drinks, although the why might be more of a surprise. It wasn?t uncommon to see him doing things all over the dueling venues of The Arena and The Annex. Possibly to some effects inspector it would be unclear why there weren?t as many filled pyrotechnics cylinders. Would Addie know what to do though? A black can emerged from his coat pocket, the telltale Phoenix on it would likely stick out to his friend, but the wax that covered the lid was something else. The fuse that penetrated it lit, though Nick had produced no match or device to do so. ?How good is your aim?? He didn?t really listen, she?d better say excellent that was all there was to it. The sparking can was tossed back towards their pursuers as the fuse burned into the can.

It erupted the same as it would have had it been placed for one of those high excitement entries to the rings. There wasn?t just a burst of light and fire though. Just visible within the blaze was a solid container. That was the target, and maybe it would give them an advantage if she managed to shatter it and send a spray of sulfuric acid over their pursuers.

?Not great!? She shouted back to him. It wasn?t the answer he had been looking for but she would still give it the old college try. Though she was still moving, she turned to jog backwards, bringing the pistol up to bear as if she were actually trained to do this. That wasn?t necessarily the case but she had a full clip and a lot of motivation to get it right. Exhaling as she pulled the trigger, she squeezed it twice more after that just in case. The first two shots narrowly missed the moving target and one of the two grazed a blur of purple. The third shot though hit its mark and the anguished cries of those in the spray radius were enough to turn her back around and adjust her speed from a jog to a sprint.

Down on the ground, she was for more comfortable with the twisting and turning streets of Rhydin City and with no hesitation, she took off, trusting Nick to keep up. Much further ahead, the wall dividing Dragon?s Gate from New Haven loomed over Dragon?s Gate Orphanage. Addie was of half a mind to run there but with the children there, the last thing she wanted to do was lead murderous psychos to their home. Instead she ran wide right, ducking down a narrow gap between tall buildings that she knew led to the main street that connected the districts. Such commotion was easily written off amidst the chaos of Dockside but in Dragon?s Gate, it attracted a number of stares. Stares meant bystanders and bystanders meant collateral damage. Too many people had been hurt in her name already, Addie wasn?t going to add to the list.

?Nice shot!? Nick hadn?t needed to look, the reactions of the ones following them was enough for him to know that there was a bit of acid rain happening in Dragon?s Gate tonight.

Nick didn?t want people getting hurt, well not the ones that didn?t deserve it at least. Attention had been the idea though. The more eyes the better in his opinion. Maybe a crowd would serve to help them get away again. It might even bring a little more help from official sources. Say what you want about the watch, but they did serve a purpose. It was kind of a shame that it took a commotion in a better section of town to get them out en masse. ?I know you don?t want to, but? isn?t your mom?s place close??

Nick had been lagging behind a bit, not too far, getting the shield free of his back and onto his arm at a run was a little difficult. He cinched down the bracer onto his forearm and freed the second hammer from his left hip. They?d picked up some distance on the men at street level. Perhaps they were expecting another of those surprises. That hadn?t slowed the men on the rooftops, especially as the buildings became Brownstones and getting from one roof the the next was simpler. They were essentially cut off. If they turned down a sidestreet the force above them would descend and compel them to fight. That of course would become inevitable soon enough, as they would need to turn in order to make their way towards Raven?s place.

?Wh-what?! No? we can?t? Nick, what if they?? She couldn?t finish her sentence, her words catching in her throat. Her thought had been the New Haven Baron?s Manor in hopes that maybe Hope would grant them safe haven if only for a little while. But it would have required taking the long way through New Haven and they didn?t have that kind of time.

Raven?s was much closer. Astoria Lane was picturesque in the fall, capped by a canopy of red and orange leaves as if the very sky had been set aflame by the changing of the seasons. It was also only three blocks and a right turn ahead. The alternative was a left, approximately four blocks ahead, and then another six block sprint down the thoroughfare to get to Hope?s. For all of her fear for her mother?s safety, Addie didn?t think they could get to Hope?s in time. Even Raven?s would be pushing it. Finally she threw her hands up.

?Fine! Go!? She swept a hand to gesture for Nick to go ahead, slowing just enough for him to do so. If they were going to get there, they needed something to slow down the mob. Fumbling through her pocket, she found her phone and haphazardly swiped through her contacts. She punched the call button and pulled it to her ear. On the second ring it was answered.

?Mom? Err? Raven? It?s Addie. Look, you said if I needed anything to call you and I need you. Are you at home? You are? Good. I?m in trouble, can you unlock the front door for me, we?ll be there in?? Addie looked upwards as a passing shadow crossed their path ahead. ?Shit. Ten minutes.? With that she hung up and stuffed her phone back into her pocket. ?Nick, they?re comin? down. Be ready!?

Addie MacKenzie

Those above had managed to not only catch up but to get ahead, giving them the perfect opportunity to head Addie and Nick off before they could make the turn onto Astoria. Right at the corner, a bright red hydrant marked their turn. Addie took a deep breath and just before they reached it, went skidding to a halt without warning. Such a thing took far more concentration than she could have reasonably put into it at the moment, but when she exhaled, she did so with her palm pressed forward toward the hydrant. The shove of energy burst the regulator and the hydrant?s cap shot off with the sudden pulse of water. Though always more in tune with water more than the other elements, her skill in bending it to her will still lacked compared to Nick?s control over his own internal flame. Water sprayed up toward the sky, wetting the street and sidewalks with each gush. Every moment she stood there was a moment that the Orionites got closer. It took every ounce of self control she had to stay there, live bait in the midst of an impromptu plan that Nick would like strangle her for himself later.

Heavy feet splashed into the vast puddle formed by the broken hydrant and as three plum robed men came toward her, she pushed the entirety of her will into flash freezing the water. Feet stuck within the ice and those that were lucky enough to not be frozen on the spot were sent slipping and sliding across the surface. At the very edge as she was, the ice was minimal but enough to slow her footsteps as she swung a look for Nick to track him back down once she could focus on running again.

Be ready she had said. It would have helped if he?d known what to be ready for. Nick could hear the metal of the hydrant shriek in the moment before metal tore itself apart and released the torrent of water onto the street. That was all the time she had given him, enough to vault a parked car and brave the traffic that had become suddenly erratic as the road froze beneath tires and sent cars crashing into one another. Sometimes he envied Addie and the things she could make. He stood now, staring at the frozen waterspout that the hydrant had become.

He?d discuss her timing later, maybe. For now he shouted out her name so that she knew he was okay, then nodded his approval for her display. The whole situation had him angry, it ran deep and hot. These people had been the ones to take from him. Safety from him and Addie, the way home, they?d taken home from both of them and he hated them for it. They were vulnerable now, Addie?d seen to that. How good would it be to strike back? To take a little vengeance for everyone they?d ever touched?

Nick moved, but he was no longer running. Addie thought he controlled the flame, and maybe in part she was right. All he?d really ever done was learn how to let it free when it needed to be, and perhaps coax it into feeding on that which he needed at the time. How long had it been since she?d seen him try to internalize the flames? His foot slipped on the pavement, but he was nowhere near the patch of ice Addie had created. His next step left the sole of his shoe behind as melted slag. For a moment he thought he heard her calling him, but everything was drowned out by the call from within. Everything burns? It was true, he could see it with each stride closer to the nearest robed figure. Flesh would blister wetly, it would peel and char. Voices would rise, but how was that any different than the squeal of a log as it caught fire and sap boiled from within?

Nick put his weapons away, he needed neither Heaven nor Hell for this. He needed only to reach, to touch them and they?d become so much ash. He would, if only he didn?t feel that fire leeching away from him. Something was stealing his heat. Something attached to his arm. He had only a moment to register it, when it let loose with a flash brighter than any he?d managed in the rings. He felt robbed of victory, and suddenly cold, but the sound of the world had returned. The agonized cries of the robed figure turned his stomach. He couldn?t look at him, or at Addie. He just ducked his head and ran as fast as he could.

There was something strangely satisfying about the screams amidst the blinding light. Addie had listened to her fellow captives scream just like that before they died too. It was a suiting way to go out. She could barely see for the light of the shield but she felt Nick?s familiar presence blazing by and she too ran after him. It gave them a few minutes between the ice and the light, just enough to dash down Astoria Lane. Surging at the last moment, Addie took point and ran up Raven?s stairs with such a fury it would have made Nick proud in the way her feet barely touched even a third of the stairs. No sooner did she reach the top did the front door swing open to show Raven just inside, waiting to intercept the girl.

?Nick too!? Addie cried breathlessly when it looked like Raven might slam the door shut before her friend could get inside. It occurred to Adelaide at that moment that Raven hadn?t met the older boy just yet. But she kept it open just long enough for both of them to make it inside before throwing it shut. A sweep of the older woman?s hand sent latches locking and runes flaring as they blinked to life. The protective magic echoed throughout the brownstone, securing doors and windows alike with a resounding thrum as it sealed the place tight. Addie?s sides hurt and in the foyer, she nearly dropped out of sheer exhaustion.

?Holy? shit.? Was all she managed to spit out, leaving Raven to look between the two with a wary curiosity that Addie couldn?t quite sate just yet.

Nick was limping by the time they?d reached the steps. Where his hands were used to taking a beating on shingles, and a myriad of other things that had toughened them up over the years. His feet were another matter. What was left of his shoes might have been okay, had they been walking. He barely made it through the door before Raven had it shut, warded and locked. His clothes were brittle from the heat he?d been pouring out of him. They smelled of smoke, but all he could get was the memory of burnt hair and skin.

Where Addie had nearly dropped, he just collapsed to the floor and kicked off the once shoes. ?I?m sorry.? He?d lost control, gotten caught up in the strength of the flames. It was the bad guys, sure, but inside he remembered being nearly blind to everything and everyone. What if it had been Addie? ?I?m sorry.? He didn?t know what else to say, or if he?d ever be able to feel the same again. Nick buried his head in his knees. Were they victims or heroes? She was a hero, he knew that, about himself he wasn?t so sure. It didn?t feel like something a hero would do. Maybe he could accept it if he were a victim? At least then he?d be able to believe he?d been pushed too far. He had known before it began though, done it anyway. ?I?m sorry??

I?m a monster.

?What happened?? Raven asked, looking between the two. Addie hadn?t been lying when she said she was in trouble, Raven just hadn?t expected them to show up in such a state. ?C?mon, let?s get you two out of the entryway. Come on.?

At her mother?s urging, Addie straightened up long enough to get to Nick. Once at his side, she knelt beside him with her hand turned palm up for him to take. ?They found me. Us. They?re here and they want me. We ran into them a few weeks ago? but we got away. This time though? they weren?t gonna stop. They were gonna kill Nick and whoever else got in their way.?

Raven had gone stock still as Addie answered, her eyes wide in the dim light of the foyer. It made her mouth go dry and her skin awash with a cold sweat. But for as much as she wanted to run and hide from the impending threat, there were two children in her home who needed her more. ?Addie, bring your friend into the parlor. I?ll get the first aid kit.?

Stepping from the entryway, Raven left the pair alone, Addie still kneeling beside Nick. Her skin radiated cold where his was hot. Too hot. When Raven?s footsteps faded toward the back of the brownstone, Addie quietly whispered. ?Shhh, nothing to be sorry for. You saved me. You saved us. You did good, Nick. I cross my heart, you did. We?re safe now, let?s go sit in there instead of on the floor.?

Addie had to be right, Nick needed her to be. He grabbed hold of the door knob and used it to pull himself to his feet. They hurt with every step, forcing him to put his weight on the sides and avoid both heel and ball. The pain was a good thing, driving him to think about his steps instead of what just happened. When they were kids it wouldn?t have been an issue, they?d all spent as much time barefoot as shoed and probably more. His time in the forge had made it necessary to always wear something on his feet. There were other dangers besides the occasional hot coal to avoid. Dropped tools that were often as sharp as the weapons they made could make short work of an unprotected foot.

He looked at Addie as he sat down, knowing this had to be uncomfortable for her. He?d only had a moment to see Raven, but on her return he?d study her hard. She?d been gone nearly a decade, Nick barely remembered her face, there was nothing that would erase the dark hair from his mind though. ?We shouldn?t have come here. I? It was just the closest place.? There was also the fact that he?d always felt safe here for some reason. He slid all the way over to leave room for Addie to sit if she wanted. What did he say to Raven though? He couldn?t apologize anymore. ?It?s good to see you.? See not meet, he didn?t even try for the lie not when everything was falling apart.

?I told Addie awhile back that she?s always welcome here. I know it?s? weird? but I?m not too worried about it. I?m assuming that you already know who I am for some odd reason, but as a friend of Addie?s you?re welcome here too.? Raven afforded Nick a wan smile. The woman was tired, having pulled a double at the clinic only to be awoken by a frantic call just a few hours after falling asleep. Addie had taken a seat beside Nick to check him over though Raven seemed intent on doing the same. When she spoke next, it was for Addie?s benefit rather than Nick?s. ?She?s not here right now, if that?s what you?re wondering. Over at the Owl playing with the twins. Probably a good thing, all things considered. Did they touch either of you??

?No,? Addie answered quickly. It seemed to relieve Raven if only slightly. Aside from the intense spell taking the wind out of her, Addie was unharmed, if a little drenched thanks to the fire hydrant. ?They aren?t going to find us here, are they??

?Mmm, they shouldn?t. The wards blend the building with the ones on either side of it. If you don?t know what you?re looking for, you can?t even see the front door.? With her Raven had two bottles of water and a metal box. The former she handed to Addie while the latter was opened and perused. ?Why didn?t you tell me they were here??

?I? I didn?t think they?d bother you.? As soon as she said it, it seemed so obvious as to why Raven had asked. ?Oh? oh gods, I?m sorry. I should?ve? they haven?t, have they??

?No, though I expect if they find out we?re in the city too, they may reevaluate.? Raven didn?t sound angry, just concerned. She paused in her rummaging to retrieve her phone, tapping out a quick series of messages to make sure Addie?s younger counterpart was secure. ?Let?s get you two cleaned up and you can tell me more.?

Rhydin, October 20th, 2016

Nick had been avoiding Dockside since the incident a couple weeks ago. He?d tried to get his information through other sources, but only managed to fail. At least he?d done that one on purpose though. The idea that hurting Avy or Alex could come from a few words wasn?t something he wanted even risked. It was better this way, going to someone he?d understood to know many things. Panacea?s roof was where he could see it but the street he?d need to clear was too wide for him to get to it. At least with the buildings at this height. He chose to tic tac down into the alleyway instead, and jay walk like a normal person. He?d been there yesterday as well, which is how he knew the two buildings that made up the alley were close enough together for the risky down. He was glad that he was alone for this.

It?d been Addie who?d turned him on to coming here, even if she didn?t know it. The concoction she used at night was the clear indicator. The dreams she?d had, the stresses she?d been through, Nick understood the need to sleep like the dead for her. He did a half dash across the street, timing that last car with a vault that had him flipping sidelong to clear it. You draw too much attention to yourself. It wasn?t the first time he?d thought those words since he?d been here. It had only grown worse since he?d decided that he absolutely needed the Shield of Gondar to aid him. He carried it now, though honestly it looked like a scaled down version of the original. Perhaps it sensed his need was greater than just the sporting venues and that was why it had become the oddly shaped buckler. It was perfect for his style, he?d never deny that.

His hand paused on the door handle a moment before determination pushed him through it and into the shop. It hadn?t changed from what he?d seen the first time. Except that Vash was not visible today. Maybe he was early? Nick checked the clock on his phone and shook his head. He was but not so early that it would make too much difference. With the smallest of shrugs he moved through the shop, looking at the items and having no idea what to do with any of them. Maybe Cane wouldn?t be able to help him, but he might be able to send him to someone who could. There might be some kind of book he could recommend to Nick that would serve every purpose he had. Too many ?mights?, and he was getting to the point where he couldn?t take his own thoughts anymore.

?Hello? Vash??

A tall, lanky dog with a bridle coat hopped down from the store window, nails clicking gently on the floor. He stretched his body and gave high-pitched, whining yawn before abruptly shifting into his human form: a gaunt fellow dressed in clothes that hung on his skinny frame, with graying hair and a braided beard that nearly reached his stomach.

?At your service,? he crooned at Nick from behind the counter. ?What can I do ya for??

There were advantages to growing up in this city. It had a tendency to get one used to seeing the strange as normal. Of course this fact really worked in favor of the vampires who used that lack of reaction to their advantage. Maybe if he hadn?t made an appointment already he?d have reacted differently. Probably not. ?I?m supposed to see Cane? You said to come by today.? There was no accusation in his words, it was clear that Vash probably saw enough clients that were regulars to misplace one kid who?d walked in once, bought nothing and left shortly after.

?I don?t need?? Nick craned his head around looking at the well supplied shelves. ?... I don?t think I need anything like this. I need?? He wasn?t sure, that was why he was here wasn?t it? ?Is Cane here or do I need to come back again?? There was time, the thought was mildly amusing to him, and a complete distraction from the situation. Nick breathed deep, held on, and set to focusing on what he did need. ?Mostly I just need to talk about something, but if I need to purchase something I can do that too. Maybe a good luck charm?? He was reaching now, never good when faced with improvisation, not when it was just simpler to tell the truth and let the chips fall where they would.

Vash was never one to forget a face. Unless, of course, he?d been intoxicated or otherwise altered in some fashion, which was highly likely given that one of the shop owners liked to experiment on him, and who could ever say no to Aoife Duggan?s doe-eyed stare? Lucky for Nick, he remembered their brief chat from the other day as soon as he?d taken a closer look at the boy.

?What do any of us really need?? Sinking into a slothful lean against the counter, the older man smiled and perched his chin on the heel of his palm. After a moment or two, he nodded toward the stairs on the opposite side of the room. ?Cane?s up in the office. Door should be open.?

Silently he nodded, unsure if he was meant to answer the question or if it was meant to be rhetorical. He supposed it could have been a shot at him, though such things were too easy to deliver for anyone to get much satisfaction out of it. Nick looked in the direction Vash nodded, noting the stairwell and began to head in that direction. He did look back toward the other man before heading up.

?Thanks, and you?re probably right.? What did he know really about those deeper issues?

Despite how it looked, he did not hurry up the steps. In fact it would be said that Nick was actually moving slowly to anyone who knew him. The run up to the second floor was half speed, there was no sign of the stunts he?d normally use in a similar situation. He pulled up short as he reached the top, looking through the open door at the man he?d come to see. Cane was facing him, seated at a desk laden with trinkets and knick-knacks, bent over a ledger in which he was busy writing furiously. The noise of his ascent should have been enough to alert Cane to his impending presence, but when the man did not look up, he knocked firmly on the open door. Besides, he?d learned a long time ago that some places you just didn?t move into without permission. He teetered a bit in the moment it took Cane to set his pen down, weight shifting from one leg to another as he waited. The urge to adjust the shield on his back became so overwhelming that it happened almost without his knowing it. Better than shoving his hands in his pocket like a guiltier version of him would.

?Nick,? the Cajun greeted, sitting up and squaring his shoulders.

Even seated it was obvious to Nick that the man had a couple of inches on him. He had a few more pounds on the youth as well, but a lot of that likely came with maturity. He gave his Ramones t-shirt a final tug wishing he?d dressed a little differently. That thought passed quickly. He was exactly what Cane would see; to try and hide that fact would be some other kind of untruth.

?Is it okay to come in?? He looked away from Cane, eyes sliding along the doorway as though he could see a ward if it were present. He?d never had that ability before, but that wouldn?t stop him from hoping.

?Yes. Yes, come in.? Cane waved the youth inside as he pushed up to stand from his seat and stepped around the desk to move toward the door which he shut quietly behind Nick once the boy had moved further inside. ?I thought your name looked familiar.? He nodded to the shield strapped on Nick?s back. ?Overlord?s new squire, right? Nice ta meet?cha.? He held a hand out for Nick to shake.

One final step up into the office was taken when permission or at least the indication that it was safe, was given. Nick?s eyes found themselves locked onto Cane?s face, brushing over the stubble and angles before finding a home as his dark eyes met the man?s. He took the proffered hand in his, giving him the same firm grip he?d have given to anyone.

?Thank you for seeing me. I hope I?m not just wasting your time.? A nod was all that he?d give in response to the question about squireship. ?I probably know a little more about you than you do me. Not much I mean, but my late father mentioned you from time to time.? Nick?s brow twitched as he said the word late, something he had yet to be able to control.

The admission had Cane?s eyebrows lifting in surprise. He pawed at his mouth with a calloused hand to mask his slack-jawed expression and hummed thoughtfully, trying to figure out who it was that he could possibly know well enough to find himself in a situation like this.

?He said you?re smart, I kind of need smart right now, or smarter than me at least.? Nick knew his limitations, given time he?d manage to figure things out for himself. Time was the one thing he couldn?t predict. He had no idea if he had a day, a year, or more to figure things out. He knew that he wasn?t willing for it to be years, he?d make something happen if it came down to that.

?I?m flattered,? Cane admitted, though he looked downright confused. The Cajun combed a hand through his hair, blew out a breath of air, and gestured to the alcove that housed a worn, but comfy-looking couch. ?Why don?t we have a seat an? you can tell me jes? what it is that?cha need from me.? He started in that direction. ?Who?s yer father? Maybe start with that.?

Sitting seemed like a horribly wonderful idea to Nick. It meant loosening the shield from the straps that kept it in place, and holding awkwardly it in his lap. It would also mean that he?d fidget while he was there, but at least he had something to hide the way his thumbs kept tracing across the pads of his fingers. He wanted to be comfortable, but was certain he wouldn?t find that yet regardless of his position. He chose to sit with an abruptness that might tell Cane a lot about how he made his decisions. His feet stretched out, crossing at the ankles and proceeded to move nervously.

?Kruger. My father is, or was, Kruger.? He?d begun with a deep breath, and a hesitation. His gaze lingering on his twitching ankles, which only seemed to slow once that admission was out of the way.

?Kruger?s dead?? Cane interrupted.

?He is, and he isn?t. Here, now he?s alive and well. I?m not from now, though I was born here. This is the crux of my problem I suppose. I?m here, and realizing I shouldn?t be. More than that, I?m having to figure out how to make it back on my own.? He was being too cryptic, he knew that. It was hard to lay all the cards on the table when he didn?t know how the hand would be received.

?I should say that you?re not the first person I have talked to about this. For reasons that I wouldn?t want to see happen, they were unable to give me much help. I have questions, about time, about making changes and knowing them before I step on the proverbial butterfly.? He had more questions, but rather than cloud the issue with those Nick chose to stick to one at a time. ?I?m not looking for some kind of magical solution here. Advice, a plan, somewhere to look that won?t involve more people than is needed.?

?I?ve been here two months, a little more, but it feels like I?m going nowhere. My father had the plan, but he?s not here.? As he talked, it became easier to look to Cane. There was a flood of information in the things he said, but still it was just the first spillage over the dam. These were all things he had tried to think about himself, but the truth was he needed another voice besides his own.

Canaan sat on his corner of the couch in silence, letting the boy chatter nervously without any other interruptions. Even after the silence that settled between them began to stretch in length, he remained thoughtfully quiet. A full minute passed before he cleared his throat and looked up to meet Nick?s gaze.

?Plan for what, exactly?? Cane?s brow furrowed. There were gaping holes in this picture, he didn?t have all the pieces of the puzzle and he wanted them before he gave his opinion, though something told him it wouldn?t change no matter what Nick told him.

Direction. That was exactly what he needed. Someone who hadn?t been there from the beginning to add a little order to Nick?s thoughts. He had begun to realize that he was speaking to Cane as though he already knew things. It was probably part of arguing within himself so often. It was enough to cause a physical change in the boy. His feet pulled inward quickly and planted hard on the floor.

?A plan to rescue Addie, of course. To find a way to bring her home, or failing that figure out what happened to her and stop it. She had a problem a while back, something that was felt by the person who asked us to come and see her.? Nick was skirting the problem that she?d had, not to hide things from the Cajun he was talking to. It was more a measure to protect a little of Addie?s privacy. The story wasn?t his to tell, not that part of it at least.

?It took me quite a while to find her, mostly because I didn?t know where to look. I?m not so sure finding her any sooner would put me any closer to a resolution? not me alone at least. I?m as certain as I am sitting here that Dad knew things already. That he was going to talk about it when we got here, but.. These things cost a lot sometimes, that?s what they told me. Right?? He didn?t expect Cane to know the answer to what he?d been told, rather he was seeking confirmation that it was true. Did it make it easier to accept if he looked at his father?s death that way? No, would be the short answer.

?Do all the good things cost in blood?? Morbid perhaps, but it was something he?d been wondering about for a while now. At least since Addie had talked to him about what she?d done.

?There?s a price fer everything,? Cane murmured. He was frowning, eyes fixed on some spot across the room.

?Don?t get me wrong, I?ve had ideas.? Something Nick had said seemed to have an effect on Cane. He had no idea what was going through the man?s thoughts. Feeling a little guilty for it, he did what he could to push past whatever it was.

?Crazy ideas, things that I know aren?t right. I mean I heard someone say something about locking kids away until they?re thirty so that they won?t get into trouble. I know it was meant as a joke, but that didn?t stop me from thinking about how does one stop the child?? It was a crazy idea, one of many but he?d be cut off before he could expound anymore.

Cane held up a hand, signaling for Nick to take a breath and let him speak. He sighed, then, and pinched the bridge of his nose. ?I?m sorry,? he began, sounding reluctant to be speaking at all. ?Save Addie an? bring her home? I?ll take that ta mean she?s from the future as well.? He hadn?t known that about her. He shook his head, not waiting for confirmation. ?Look, whatever home you wanna take her back to is gone. That--that reality doesn?t exist anymore. Hell, something as mundane as bumping into some random stranger on the street here could have altered the future so entirely that you wouldn?t recognize it when you went back. If you change something now, yer the only person who?s gonna know anything?s different later on down the road.

?****in? with Time is not safe. Maybe? maybe whatever you came back here to save her from is exactly what screws everything up to begin with. It?s shit like that that you can?t account for. You want my advice? Forget yer crazy ideas an? go home. Go back ta whenever it is you came from an? don?t ever come back. An? hope ta whatever higher power you believe in that what you find there is somewhere you wanna continue ta live.?

?I want to go back, because I do know that coming here has made her vulnerable. That?s not my reason though, and as selfish as it is. As bad as I feel for thinking it? Hell I?ve never even said it outloud. Just let it sit in my head like a piece of gum on the sidewalk. You know what I mean, it melts, people step in it, spread it everywhere. It?s impossible to get rid of.? Nick took hold of his lip between his teeth and bit down hard.

?I didn?t really understand this, not til I got here? and believe me I am stuck here for now. One of the last things he said to me. My father, I mean, was that it?s easy to find someone to die for, but hard to find someone that you?d live for? or when you do it?s too late. Go home? I?d go now if I could. Maybe I just figured things out too late. I don?t even know anymore.?

?So what is it you want from me, Nick?? Cane was starting to wonder if the boy was simply at his wit?s end. Things must be dire if he was who the kids were turning to in their time of need. Seemed that was happening more and more these days, a fact that did not escape the Cajun as he sat frowning at the frazzled kid beside him. In truth, Nick Allen was not a child, but it was all Cane could see here in this moment when he was at the end of his rope. ?I can?t send you back, an? even if I could, I wouldn?t do it. I wouldn?t do it for anyone. Not even ta save someone I love. If you don?t got a way back home, then I?d suggest you get as far away from Addie as you can, and get used to the new normal.?

Nick let out a soundless laugh. It was pushed through his nose. It wasn?t a scoff, not at what Cane was saying to him at least. ?See, that is what I?m asking you for. Not the way home, just affirmation I guess. I look at the things I?ve done and realize several things. But since I don?t trust myself to know, I just feel like I?m going crazy. I don?t want to go to someone who knows me, because I don?t need to be coddled, or comforted. I don?t need to be told everything is going to work out. That?s a B.S. answer and I know that, but you know, what if I?m wrong? I?ve been wrong every step of the way.? Resignation pulled all that was jovial out of his face and left him closed eyed and thinking.

?Admitting you ****ed up is a difficult thing ta do. Not very many people can do it with grace.? Cane sighed, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees. ?An? too often, the clarity ta find a solution to a problem doesn?t happen until everything?s gone ta hell. Hindsight?s a bitch.?

?I can?t save Addie, I can?t take her home. I can?t get there myself. I sometimes wonder if I could fix her, at least stop her nightmares, the need to block her dreams. The thing that brought me back here in the first place. I?d go, find a spot out there somewhere and just go if I could give her at least that much. I don?t know what it would take. I mean, is there a difference between Necromancy and Resurrection? What is it? I assume there?s soul involved there.? He was convinced that there was a flaw in her ritual, but his faith in his own thoughts had been flagging. At least until Cane brutally confirmed what he knew but didn?t trust.

?That is what I needed though, blunt honesty. See, you are smart.? Nick managed a half smile, that never quite reached the rest of his face. ?I?m sorry, maybe I shouldn?t have come here. I just didn?t know where I should have gone.? Not to his father, that much he understood. Claire was one hundred percent right about him. He?d do what it took and damn the cost of it.

Cane?s expression had gone rather cold. ?You?d do well ta quit while you?re behind, lest you spread the mess she made even more?n it already has been. You don?t **** with time and you don?t **** with the dead. That?s my advice.? And judging by his not-so-subtle cautionary tone, it was also the end of their conversation.

Nick knew that this peculiar therapy session was at an end. He gave several small nods, one for the two points that Cane had emphasized, and a final acknowledgement to the man. Given a choice, he was sure that Cane would have stayed home if he?d known where things were going. Rising he headed for the closed door, pausing for an instant before heading down the stairs. ?I do appreciate your time, and everything you said. I don?t need to do anything, not with time or the dead. If I?m going to give up everything though, I?d like to understand what I?ve given it up for. I won?t be back here. I?m no magic user, just a kid with a talent and a long way to go.?

He slid the shield over his shoulders and headed down the steps. Maybe Cane could see it too. Everything had a cost, that would include his disappearance even if the price was just the answer to the question.

10/30/16 -- Devil?s Night

Nick couldn?t explain why he needed to go now to mail the letters. It would have taken too long, and perhaps more importantly he?d have been unable to keep from telling Addie everything. He was going to a place that had guaranteed they?d hold them until the date he?d requested. Of course they?d also guaranteed it would take the rest of his winnings from the tournament to do so. Not that he blamed them. Seventeen years is a long time to store something even so small as the box he held. What he had managed to do, was get out of the house with a smile and a wave to Addie and perhaps more importantly, he?d gotten out silently. Paper was one of those things that weighed very little in small quantities. Who would notice the difference of a single sheet, folded as though to go into an envelope? Especially if that envelope were sitting at the bottom of the stack of letters, in a box that likely more than made up the weight in tape alone. How long it sat there on the kitchen table still waiting to be married to a presumably empty envelope only Addie would know. The poorly creased fold had opened the letter enough to reveal what would now be the familiar script of Nick in another of those things he insisted on writing to Avy.

30 October 2016

My Averia,

It?s finally sunk in, I?ve looked and getting back is impossible. It became so the moment that I stepped through that portal. If I could make it back to you, I?d do that in a second. My presence here however has put Addie in jeopardy. You sent me because you thought I?d be clear headed enough to know what to do. I do know, Avy. I have to stop myself from coming. My first thought was to take out the man who opened the portal in the first place. That would work, but that little boy that I was needed him. . It?s kind of funny you know? I was always afraid of monsters when we were kids. Maybe deep down I knew that I was one of the worst? I don?t know how many times he helped me to keep from becoming the monster that I was on Tuesday. Without him, I may have hurt any one of you. I couldn?t bear that. No, it makes more sense to remove me from the situation. I don?t know what it will do to my father. I don?t know the overreaching costs, but I am an Allen boy, and the costs be damned.

Tonight will be the best time. My dad?s away at the theater all day. He?ll have asked Addie?s mom to babysit. I think I could use the roof to gain access quietly. I don?t know why I am bothering to mail these, if things go right I?ll never have existed in your life. I won?t have lived long enough to know how to write. I certainly won?t feel this?

Go. Go get ready, I?ll meet you there. Nick had promised that he would only be a little bit while he took care of something. She had plenty of time to shower and do her hair, to dress down in ragged denim and a white tank top that boldly proclaimed Burn After Use. There was always time. Always. The letter on the table was almost missed in her ironically lazy rush to get her shoes and catch up to Nick. It was Devil?s Night after all, the best parties would be beginning before long. She had only one shoe on when she noticed the letter.

?Damnit Nick, you forgot one.? She grumbled, reaching across the table to snag it. Maybe it wasn?t too late to get it to him before he handed the rest over to the courier?s office. Its haphazard folding gave way to her curiosity and she peeked a little then opened it fully. What he didn?t know wouldn?t kill him, right? Fully expecting a gushy, mushy letter full of How I love thee declarations, she was instead met with a half cocked plan to do something really, really stupid. Cane had been right. Quickly Addie pulled on her other shoe without even tying it and hurried for the door, letter in hand while she tried to fumble free her phone. She barely got the door shut behind her, tripped over the giant paw of the Cerberus sleeping outside, and recovered to take off down the driveway. The first call went to voicemail. She hung up and tried again. The second and third both went to voicemail too.

?Gods above, Nikolai, answer your ****ing phone!? She growled into the mouthpiece, hung up, and immediately sent him a frantic text asking where he was. How long before her had he left? Twenty minutes, maybe thirty. She needed to get across town as quickly as possible. From Seaside to New Haven could easily take thirty minutes or more on a good day. But not if you traveled above street level. With zero hesitation, she climbed the first access ladder she could to scale the wall that separated Seaside?s southern border from the Old Market. If she could just avoid any city guards or other obstacles, she could cut that time in half so long as she didn?t think about just how high up she was. Now if only Nick could see how she sprinted the wall?s ledge as if it were nothing but a curb on the street. Later she might be proud of herself. For now she was positively panicked.

Addie on the walls without being coerced into it would have made Nick proud. He was headed toward New Haven from a different direction. He?d stopped at the courier service, and drained everything he had, but it was well worth the cost to him. Unlike the last time he?d come this way there was no one keeping him from the rooftops. That was still the plan. One way or another this was going to end tonight. He felt the phone vibrate in his pocket half a second before it went off. He pulled it free knowing who it would be. He silenced the ringtone, but watched the picture on the face until it went to voicemail. The next two he used the **** you button, and took off like a bat out of hell. She knew, or she wouldn?t be that insistent.

Nick had a head start, and was confident that he?d have plenty of time to get into place long before Addie could get across town. The brownstone roofs flew by, even when it required wall climbing to get to the next group of town houses. What was it that Raven had said to them? Unless you knew what you were looking for her home looked like it was not there. He knew he was close. If it hadn?t been for the slight oddity of chimney placement he might have missed it entirely. He stopped, it was time to try and break through the wards that made the place disappear. He closed his eyes, remembering every time he?d ever been up on this roof. There were things that he did remember, flaws in the stone that had been there ever since he could remember. Sitting down he concentrated on the wall, willing it to reveal its secrets to him.

He pulled his phone free and looked at the text message from Addie. His fingers slid across the keyboard as he sent something back to her. Maybe he could keep her from coming if he said things just right.

Text to Addie: I?ll be there soon, just have one last thing to do.

Nick?s thumb hovered over the send button, then crushed it as though it weren?t just an image on the screen.

With Battlefield Park on her left and the Marketplace on her right both blurring into an indiscernible mish-mash of rooftops and gaslight lamps, Addie ran until her sides hurt bad enough to slow her. Maybe Nick had been right, she needed to get back to training properly. We can train together. Once this is all straightened out. I promise, we can run every morning and I won?t even complain. Try as she might to keep the darkest of her thoughts from wresting control of her mind, her frantic pace made it impossible to think about anything but. So focused on running without stumbling off the wall, she didn?t even feel her phone hum in her pocket. After all, he had ignored her calls and her text hadn?t received an immediate response so she was left to think the worse.

Neither hell nor high water could stop her now, and no text could either. Soon the wall split to wrap New Haven in its protective embrace, diverting northeast between the district and Battlefield Park or straight east to divide it from Dragon?s Gate. Addie?s pace slowed but her panic didn?t wane, instead threatening to drown her in the swell of worry as she made the leap from wall to rooftop, her stomach lurching when she nearly didn?t make the gap with enough room on the other side. The twist in her gut, equal parts anxiety and adrenaline, kept her from sprinting the final leg of the journey and instead her progress came in lilting leaps and lulls, broken by the narrowing spaces between buildings until the even, straight edge of the brownstones of Astoria Lane called out to her like a beacon in the dark.

?Please, please, please don?t let me be too late.? She muttered to herself as she caught her breath for what would hopefully be the last jump before the connected row. It?d be easy to enter through the roof hatch or drop onto the back balcony when she got there, she thought, and if her mother was there, she was certainly capable of keeping Nick away from his younger counterpart, right? Fingers and feet scrabbled on rough brick as she caught the row?s ledge and pulled herself up much to the chagrin of her aching legs. But that was it, that was the final leap. She made it. With an exasperated heave of her lungs, she jogged across the rooftops toward the nigh invisible place where Number 5 would give way to 6 before 7. In the dark she almost missed him sitting there but the presence of another person on the roof was impossible to ignore.

?Nick? what are you doing??

?Waiting for you I guess. You just missed us, but listen? sometimes you can just hear us playing.? He?d managed to see them on the balcony for a brief moment. He wondered if that were part of the motivation for him to need to try and fly. ?How did you know I?d be here?? Nick pushed himself up to his feet and looked at Addie, unable to hide anything in his face. ?You ever wonder what it?d be like, how things might have changed if one of us weren?t there?? He moved towards the edge of the roof and looked over. ?I?ve been thinking about it a lot lately. I don?t know if it would be better, maybe for you.?

Nick pulled a small chuckle from somewhere as he looked at her. ?You got here fast, what?d you do, fly?? Her top was in too good of condition for that, and he knew it. The truth wasn?t something he could easily comprehend, not from Addie. He?d seen her make some crazy jumps, but he?d been there to give support. ?There?s no going home, but you already know that don?t you?? She?d been telling him all along they?d find a way. He?d been just as certain they would. He knew better now.

?Your letter, you big dummy.? The crumpled letter was withdrawn from her pocket and thrust out in his direction, clutched in her shaking hand. The more he rambled, the more it scared her. What had pushed him to this point and how could she talk him down from what she thought would be the ultimate mistake. ?I? I? Nick, don?t talk like that. Just don?t. Whatever?s going on, we?ll go drink it off and it won?t matter tomorrow.?

Starting toward him, Rhydin?s twin moons shed an eerie light on the rooftop, casting him in a pallid glow. ?I ran. All the ****ing way here along that goddamned wall because it was the fastest way here. And I jumped all those rooftops to come tell you that you?re being crazy.? His question made her falter, ebbing her anger into guilt. Almost two and a half years and she still hadn?t found a viable way back for herself or Kane. ?We?ll find a way for you. I don?t know how long it?ll take, but we?ll find it and you can go home. Okay? Come on, let?s just? just? get down from this roof and we can forget this ever happened.?

He looked at the letter, but her calling him big dummy made him laugh. Maybe he was, big and dumb, that was okay. He knew what he wasn?t though. ?No, it?s okay Addie.? Nick reached behind him and drew out a knife. He stepped towards Addie turning it in his hand to offer it up to her handle first. ?I?ve changed my mind. As much as it would make things not happen in the here and now. I guess I?m selfish. I don?t want to never know the things I do now.? He squinted at her face, looking for something, though he couldn?t say what. ?Some hero huh? I was just a few short feet between taking you out of danger and just couldn?t do it.?

Nick?s head shook a couple of times. ?That really just leaves me with one thing left to do. I need to let Avy know too. You know that I changed my mind, only? In her case it?s a little different. You know?? He wouldn?t blame Addie for not knowing. He wasn?t exactly using all of his words with her. He opened his hand, letting the knife lay on the flat of his palm for her to take. ?You could tell her right? I mean she knows what?s going on with you. Can you project any of that to her??

?Nick?? Her gaze narrowed, supernaturally sharp vision zeroing in on the blade in his hand. Somehow his words could still be heard over the quickening of her heart in her ears. Just barely though. That wasn?t just any knife but rather the dagger she?d used when she brought Sandy back. It had been languishing in her bedside table for months. Addie couldn?t bear the sight of it. But he said he had changed his mind, that was good right? Her shoulders sank as the air left her lungs, her feet carrying her across the flat rooftop toward him. ?Good, you didn?t have to do this. I told you that. That?s the right thing to do, the heroic thing. You made the right choice.?

She tried her best to convince him that everything would be okay but just as quickly as she had been assured that he had changed his mind, he confused her all over again. Her brows knitting, she squinted at him then down at the knife. Only a few steps away, she could have easily reached out for the blade?s handle. ?I don?t? I guess I don?t understand. Talk to me, Nik-Nak. What?re you thinkin? right now??

?I just wish I could talk to her directly. I mean it?s one thing to write to her. If I could get something back from her. If I knew she was answering the things I had to say, or at least could hear them from me instead of waiting.? He moved a little closer to Addie. ?You know that she knows, if she concentrates? if you feel it strongly enough. I may not know how that?s possible, but it brought me here. It did happen.?

Nick clearly wanted to be as far from the knife as he could be. He pressed it into her hand like he was pushing a temptation from him. ?Except there?s too many words, and Avy never said anything about hearing what you?d said. Maybe the distance is too far even for you two. I don?t know.? With the weapon gone from his hand, he let out a relieved sigh. If his choice of weapon surprised her, she?d only have to remember that he wasn?t cruel. He didn?t carry anything but the hammers at his hips. He wouldn?t have used those on a child.

?Maybe just try to give her something for me?? Nick wasn?t giving her time to answer, there just wasn?t time in his mind. Not for long drawn out explanations. Not for denials that would surely come. He really did know better. He closed his eyes for a moment, and called up his last memory of Avy?s face as she swam in the pool with him. He still wished he?d said and done so much more that day. When he opened his eyes, he stepped in and kissed Addie hard the way he?d wanted to do with Avy.

?We made a pact? when we were younger, before my mom died.? Addie turned her hand over, palm up. Moonlight caught a thin barely there scar across her palm just before he pushed the knife into her hand. It was a remarkably well crafted dagger, one of the few truly nice things she owned upon coming to Rhydin. Well, this Rhydin. It had never felt so strange in her grasp, like the entire energy of the thing was off. She wanted to drop it, to throw it far, far away where it couldn?t hurt anyone. ?I?ve felt her, or at least I thought I could. I thought I was just imagining it though??

Addie shook her head, brushing the thought off and looking down to the blade she held in her hand. What could she give Averia from Nick that he wouldn?t be able to give her himself? She found out when she looked up and his lips crushed against hers. It definitely wasn?t like practicing kissing as kids, not in the least. This was way weirder. She froze, at a complete loss for just how to respond.

Nick?s hand closed around Addie?s, tightening her grip on the handle of the knife in her hand. He only had the space of time offered by her confusion. Had she known the truth of why she was here, she?d never have come. One lie successfully told, or maybe writing them didn?t count? His other hand clamped onto the back of her neck to keep her from backing away from him. The only warning she?d get would come from a single tear that he couldn?t hold back as he pulled her knife hand towards his chest. He jerked it hard and quick as though not wanting to give himself a second chance to say no to this. There had been things he wanted to say. Things he thought in his contemplation of the moment that he?d be able to tell her. He?d been wrong, all he could manage was to suck a final breath and slide down her. His grip had loosened on her hand, gravity pulling it and him down to the rooftop. A red rivulet flowed towards Addie, seeking perhaps the hand that had freed it from the body that once contained it. It cared little what it touched along the way, crossing one shadow and another, following the slope of the roof.

It happened so quickly that her brain didn?t even register the motion until it was too late to pull back. She could feel his hands shaking as he held her close, an almost tender desperation in the way he refused to let her go. How could she ever explain that to Averia. A kiss became the least of her worries though, lost to the realization that the dagger in her hand had been yanked with such force that it pierced not only his shirt but the toned flesh underneath. He had driven it so hard that the hilt hit with a muted wump. As if the blade had caught fire she abruptly let it go and sank with him to try and break his fall.

?Nick? oh my gods, Nikolai. No, no, no? what did you do?!? She couldn?t breathe, she couldn?t think, she couldn?t even scream for help. Who could find them on the rooftop anyways? In a tangle of legs and dead weight, she tugged him away from the roof?s edge, cradling him in her arms as she tried to figure out what to do. ?Nicky, don?t do this to me. Please, Nick. I can?t do this, you can?t do this. Please, oh gods, please??

There was blood. So much blood. Think, Addie, think. She had to stop the bleeding first. The knife though, if she removed it would surely do more damage on the way out. Curling her hands around the blade, she pressed against the wet wound, her shoulders shaking with a silent sob that refused to voice itself if only for the fact she couldn?t get enough air to fill her lungs. Beneath the pressure of her hands, the rhythm of his heart was fading faster than she could count.

He was dying.

?No? I can? I can fix this. I can make it better. Stay with me, Nick. Just? hang on a little bit longer, I can fix you.? As she called on every healing arte she had ever encountered to try and funnel life giving energy into his body, a peculiar dance was occurring beneath her. Though her shadow stayed stationary in relation to the moon, the second less Addie shaped shadow quivered and pulsed, reaching for Nick as Addie held him against her. The rattle of a final breath taken furthered her hysterics but pressed a critical tipping point. She had a decision to make and she had to make it quickly.

?I can?? It?s too late to go back and stop what happened, but next time you?ll be able to see things more clearly. Was this the clarity that Nick had spoke of? Any shred of it though was close to being overwhelmed by the torrent of grief that racked her, decimating her composure and pushing her to the very point that had started this so long ago.

?I? can?t.? The change in her conviction bled into a whimper as she clutched him against her, her hand smoothing over his hair as she kissed his forehead once, twice, thrice. ?Oh gods, I?m so sorry, Nick. I?m so sorry??

It was goodbye. Not only to her best friend but to a passenger she had carried for almost two years. Beneath her, her second shadow swelled, seeming to soak up the spreading blood beneath Nick until black and red were indecipherable from one another. As if it were liquid, the shadow shifted and spread until it almost perfectly cradled Nick?s own shadow. Just like that two became one.

Addie could breathe again.

Sightless eyes stared at the sky. They were dark, coffee grounds in a brilliant white mug. They?d held many things over the years, mischief and mirth. They?d been the home to secret desires, and the fear that had always prevented their owner from moving on those wants. From time to time they?d even held looks of such warning to any who would dare to trespass against their owner?s loved ones. On the other hand, pity had never touched those eyes. They?d pitied no one, sympathized sure, understood as often as they knew how, but there was no place in their world for pity, nor a desire to see it from anyone. Now those eyes held another expression they?d never had before. They were empty, they waited as the cool autumn air dried their surface for the relief of a blink that would never come. They burned for a moistening tear from ducts that no longer held enough life to soothe them. Those eyes saw the girl who cried, but there was nothing left to carry it to the man whose head they were in.

What did they see? What was there in the ever increasing darkness for dead eyes to see? But this was the night for it, wasn?t it? If they?d had a voice, they would have screamed for what was above them. Not the girl, she would give them sadness. She already did, though they had no way to express it. This was something different, it was barely perceptible against the night sky. A veil so grey that it blended with the incoming clouds. They were moving, and in a way it was too, though not in any direction, or maybe in all directions at once. Tightly it stretched, as though powerful hands were upon its gauzy expanse doing their utmost to tear it asunder. Strange how they?d never seen the like before, but the eyes of the dead will always see what is hidden.

It started with the smallest of holes, a pin through a pincushion would leave a greater impression. Moment by moment it widened, and those eyes could only watch wishing they had ears to hear the sound of the tear that split the center of the veil. What lay beyond was light too great to view, the eyes wanted to close against it. But that was only a part of the mystery. The light was night white but was just as blinding, blacker than night and burning with an intensity that can only be found in between the null, and the void. Something else passed their field of view, a darkened shadow, or was it a pair of them welded together? They rose from the ground, straight up towards the never light, stretching and thinning as they climbed ever higher. Those eyes felt a tugging, something had ahold of them. Everything blurred together then as they shot upward at speeds that their once owner had only ever imagined. The Inbetween had them, the never light pulled them onwards, it shared one thing with that pair of eyes. It had no pity.

Nick?s body lay heavy on Addie, the blood had stopped flowing and its temperature was slowly dropping to that of the air around it. He did not move, save for those points where her movements affected both of them. Heavy as the lifeless husk was, it began to get lighter. The progress, almost imperceptible at first eventually became impossible to miss. It was as though pieces of him were simply not there anymore, and if she kept her eyes on him she?d notice that at one point a dark shadow passed over him and flew away. That could have been any number of things in this city, yet it was after that point that Nick?s skin became translucent. Visible were the corded muscles of his face, the intricate intertwining of veins and arteries like so much morbid lacework. This too became transparent, his clothes becoming a diaphanous sheet of cellophane a precursor to his sudden lack of physical substance.

Three distinct sounds of metal hit the roof. The first was the shield he?d fought so hard to win. It teetered on her lap for less than a heartbeat before overbalancing and dropping with a clatter. The other two were almost simultaneous. Where Nick?s hips rested, a pair of hammers had fallen. Each distinctly carved into archetypal representations of angels and demons. Heaven and Hell lay to one side of Addie, to the other was the Shield of Gondar. From the center point of the shield to the heads of each hammer an almost perfect isosceles triangle could be drawn. Nick faded further until only his outline was visible, and then nothing was left beyond the three fallen articles, and the copious amounts of blood that had pooled into the roofs low points around Addie.

At a loss for just what to do, Addie had wrapped Nikolai in her arms and held him close, rocking side to side as she sobbed. Tears splashed against her shirt and against Nick?s still face, cleaning salty paths through a smear of red on his cheek. She begged, pleaded, and bargained with every god she could name, her grief swelling to the point that she almost thought she was going to go crazy. He was her last connection to a life she?d never live again and it was as though even that was fading away before her very eyes. Addie looked up at the sky, certain a passing cloud was responsible for the pallor that had struck Nick?s flesh. Soon she realized that she wasn?t imagining the steady disintegration of the boy in her arms, he was actually disappearing right in front of her.

?Nick, no, no, no. Stay with me. Please, Nicky. What the **** is happening?!? Her fingers curled and grasped at him in a bid to keep him anchored. No matter how tightly she held him though, he slipped through her fingers like sand and before she knew it, she had nothing left of him save for two hammers, a shield, and that blood. All of that blood. Everywhere. Her anguished wails cut through the darkness, disturbing the peaceful New Haven night. She didn?t even hear the roof hatch open behind her.

?Addie? What?re you doing up here?? Raven asked, emerging from the ladder that allowed rooftop access. Addie?s cries hiccuped as she swung a look back to Raven, wide eyed and painted in Nick?s blood. As soon as her mother saw it, her eyes rounded in shock and she rushed to Addie?s side. ?Are you hurt? What happened??

?Nick. It?s Nick. H-he?s? ****... he?s gone. Oh gods, he?s gone. I killed him and now he?s gone and I lost him and--? She was cut off as Raven wrapped her arms around the girl to squeeze her tightly to her chest.

?Addie, honey, talk to me. What happened to Nick? Where is he??

?I d-don?t knoooooow,? she sobbed, her voice breaking as she slid into another wail. Raven?s hand smoothed over Addie?s hair as she cooed soothing shushing sounds into her daughter?s ear.

?Breathe, precious girl. Breathe and talk to me. I wanna help,? Raven murmured.

?You can?t help.? Addie sniffed hard and swallowed back another sob. Gods, there was so much blood. ?He? he was talking crazy? about taking his younger self out of the equation a-and? and he said if he did that then he?d never have come back here and brought the Order with him. He? he made me stab him instead. Mama, he died. He died in my arms and I couldn?t fix him or bring him back. I didn?t bring him back and he disappeared. Just faded away like he never even existed. Oh gods, what did I do? What did I do?!?

?Shh, shh, shh? slow down, sweetheart. Slow down and breathe. You gotta stay calm--?

?How the **** can I stay calm at a time like this?! I? I just killed one of my best friends! And then he disappeared. Gone. I?ve gotta? I?ve gotta go. I need to? do stuff.? Abruptly Addie extracted herself from Raven?s grasp, leaving the older woman confused and blinking. She stumbled away from her mother only to double back after a moment, stooping to reverently retrieve the hammers and shield in her bloodied grasp. With her awkward bounty wrapped in her arms, she retreated from Raven?s reach and trudged for the roof hatch. At the last moment she thought better of entering the brownstone soaked in blood as she was and instead she leaned over the roof?s edge. The balcony was just below, about a story and a half by her estimate. It would hurt to jump but it was better than trying for ground level. Addie looked over her shoulder at Raven?s moonlit silhouette standing over the dark stain that was all that was left of Nick Allen, the elder. With a deep breath, she stepped over the side for a controlled freefall to the balcony below. The shock of impact sent pain coursing through her feet since she didn?t have enough room to roll but that would be easy enough on the second jump.

?Addie!? Raven called, rushing to the roof?s edge to peer over the side. Her relief was palpable when she saw Addie only on the balcony below rather than having jumped to the ground from the roof. The dark haired teen looked up and gave her mother a strange, sad smile then made the leap from the balcony to the ground below, rolling to distribute the impact this time. It was a lot easier said than done when carrying the shield and hammers and she nearly dropped all three before recovering so she could scale the back garden?s fence. Raven watched her all the way until the dark swallowed her whole before retrieving her phone for a quick set of text messages.

Twenty minutes later, Addie had dropped both the Shield of Gondar and the Scepter of Old Temple at the foot of the Arena?s corkboard with a hastily scribbled note on a sticky note she had found along the way. Blood still stained the shield and had caked an imprint of her hand around the scepter's shaft. She didn?t bother cleaning either off before she turned to walk away from it all. At the bottom of the stairs stood her godmother, waiting for Addie to finish whatever it was she was doing.

?Aunt Claire?? Addie acknowledged her softly as she stopped in front of the pink haired woman who blocked her way out. Her voice was rough and scratchy like gravel thrown in a blender and her eyes were red and puffy. At least the tears had stopped for now.

?What did you do, Addie?? Claire asked, her tone grave and her expression cold. Raven?s texts had detailed what little Addie had said, as crazy as it all had been. Claire wasted no time in finding her goddaughter for an explanation.

?I? I don?t know?? The younger woman?s gaze dropped toward her feet only for the elder to catch her by the chin to yank her back up to look Claire in the eye.

?What. Did. You. Do?? She asked again. ?Did you kill Niko??

?Yes ma?am.? Addie murmured weakly without elaborating further. The fire in Claire?s eyes was impossible to ignore and it made Addie?s mouth go dry and her muscles tense.

?Where is he, Adelaide? How could you do this?!? Claire?s hold on her chin tightened to keep the girl from looking away. For a moment her bottom lip quivered as if the waterworks were going to start all over again but just like that she shut it down, shut everything down as she returned Claire?s stare with a flat expression.

?Nick?s gone and he?s not coming back,? she said quietly and jerked her face to one side to free herself of her godmother?s grasp. With that she shouldered past the woman and climbed the stairs in search of? something else. Anywhere but here. Anything but this.

((Thank you SO much to Nick for bringing this storyline to life and for all of the work he put in. <3 ))

Free of the shield?s burden and weighed down only by her grief and the heavy hammers at her hips, she slipped into the night of Dragon?s Gate with a set destination in mind. Through the winding streets of Dragon?s Gate she strode until the wall gave way to Old Market. From there she crossed the bridge dividing north from south and dove into Old Temple. Still there was no stopping her and finally she found herself on the cusp of WestEnd.

2346 Alfheim Street was a rundown two story building that had been converted into a duplex late in the last century. The upper level was dark save for a dim porch light that flickered with the fluctuations of energy that were often found deeper in WestEnd. The lower level, accessible by a short flight of stairs, glowed with the promise of a fix great enough to wipe her sorrows away. She had been here many a time, either with Yuri or on his behalf as she shuffled his product around the city.

Go in, forget all about this. They?ll get you higher than a kite and you won?t have to worry about it. She told herself. Her feet remained rooted to the pavement outside. Motion at one of the windows denoted someone peeping around a curtain to see who was out there. Addie didn?t even look their way, still staring at the door as if she could will herself through it.

Or don?t, because that?s what got Nick sent here to begin with. Your stupid decisions, Addie. That?s what killed Nick. Her conscience was none too kind with her delicate composure and her bottom lip wobbled with the threat of renewed crying. She rocked forward onto her toes then fell back onto her heels instead. A hand covered in dried blood slipped into her pocket to free her phone. By memory she found the message thread she was seeking and tapped out a simple send.

Text to Ro-not-Romeo: 2346 Alfheim.

She bumped the send button and looked at the time. 11:45 PM.

Fifteen minutes. If fifteen minutes pass and he isn?t here, then we?ll go inside and forget about it all. The blood covered girl slumped to sit on the sidewalk to wait, her knees pulled up to her chest and her chin set atop their peak with only her shadow to keep her company. Just the one shadow, still and stretched long by the moonlight.

The Hollows was under siege.

It wasn't an uncommon thing. It had long since been established that that enormous, foreboding apartment complex was a haunted place. A damned place, rumored to have been build over some cursed ground decades upon decades before. Whatever it had been before its original abandonment, its boarded windows and ragged halls had long since become home to some modest number of the unwanted among Rhy'din's refugees. The undesirable, the unfortunate, the forgotten. They lived and they died there. Sometimes they came back.

Sometimes they brought other things back with them.

The residents of the Hollows had long since become accustomed to the random attacks. Tonight wasn't much different and they responded, as they often did, meeting force with preparation. One of the de facto leaders, Romeo MacKenzie was there as he so often was, always in the thick of the trouble. Where he was needed, MacKenzie found the thick of it, with bow and sword and fist and a bellowing roar that drew attention to him like moths to the proverbial flame. He was tireless. Undaunted. It was like something from a movie...

His phone went off. The tone was Addie?s.

...or one of those commercials about phones during movies.

There had been a lull in things, where he had found himself with a moment to catch his breath and time to check his phone. An address. He wasn't familiar with it but that part of town was...

"****," Ro snarled and thumbed out a sloppy reply.

Text to Pizza Girl: I'm cummin

The hushed whisper of a magic command saw the bow in his other hand disappear in a wisp of mystical green and silver smoke, before the platinum haired youth was shoulder past some of his compatriots. "Hold it down, Forning," he told one steely-eyed man in his middle years who looked more like a bum than a fighter. "**** came up." He angled his steps towards the main gate of the Hollows, strides lengthening with need.

"Yo, man, you crazy? There's gonna be like a hundie o' them out there. You're gonna get..."

Fists clenched, Romeo drew in a deep breath, leveling a hard stare at the clogged path before him. Shoulders squared, his chest rose, and then... Ro roared.

Near visible waves of sound, tremors in the air, shot out ahead of him in a cone. The path before him was cleared as everything in it was leveled flat to the hard concrete and grass. Street lights a hundred feet away popped and shattered. Before anyone could move or say a word, he took off at a dead run, winded but determined.

There were barely two minutes left when his sneakers made an audible sound on the street on the approach to Addie, scraped heavily on the cobblestone.

No cheeky response met his misspelling, no pseudo-seductive note of flirtation nor promise of all the dirty things as was so common in their text thread. No, she had instead sent the message and tucked her phone away, intent on not looking at it until midnight. By the time Ro turned down Alfheim, Addie had lost and regained her composure no less than four times. Luckily for her, she had it under temporary control when he arrived. Still she sat on the pavement, one knee tucked to her chest and the other leg extended out in front of her. The blood on her flesh and clothing had dried, painting her a gruesome picture of inconsolable gore. She barely even moved in the time it took him to make it down the half dark block and it wasn't until he was practically upon her that she finally looked away from the drug den before her.

"Oh." She said softly, caught between surprise and regret. "You came."

He wasn't sure what he would find when he reached his final destination or what he was going to do if the worse had come to pass. Seeing her was a relief at first, until he got close enough to see the blood. To smell it.

"I..." Romeo faltered and then stopped before her, dropping down to one knee until he could looked up into her sad blue eyes. "You needed me. I'll always come..."

She had wrapped her arms around her slight rib cage, her fingers grasping as if she thought she too might disappear. It made her ribs ache but the pain couldn't compare to the lingering anguish that plagued her in the moment. Even in the dim light of West End's edge it was easy to see that she was on the verge of tears. Though she looked at him at first, she soon looked past him to the house she had been sitting in front of for almost half an hour.

"I'm sorry..." She mumbled, licking her lips to wet them. "I didn't mean to... to bother you or... I don't know... whatever I guess. I just... I didn't want to **** this up... god, I ****ed everything up... everything, Ro..."

He tried to hush her with a soft sound and instantly reached for her. She was gathered up into thick arms and hugged against his chest. She was rocked from side to side gently. "If I was bothered, I wouldn't be here, mo chroi. You needed me. I came. Tell me what happened."

Rag doll light in his grasp, she melted into his hold on her as her barely there composure thinned even further. "I need to go inside... need... something. To just get out of my head and never come back. I know they've got good stuff... all I gotta do is walk in. I can't, but I want to. So bad, Ro..."

"You don't need that ****, Addie." His voice was quiet, as pained as it was reassuring. "You're strong. Stronger than you know, mine darlin'. You don't need that stuff. You don't." His face was nuzzled into the side of hers, one hand lifted to smooth over her dark hair.

"I killed Nikolai." She retorted, as if that reason alone meant she had to go inside. Her hair was sticky with drying strands raked with blood, from where she had pushed it out of her face only to smear Nick's sacrifice across her world worn canvas further.

"You." He stopped. "Nick." Ro paused. Then he squeezed her tighter and shifted to haul her into his lap. "Talk to me, Addie. What happened?"

"I don't... I don't know. It happened really fast. One moment he was talking crazy, the next he kissed me and he took my hand and made me stab him." She mumbled, malleable to a fault when it came to his shifting. "I couldn't fix him, Ro. I tried... but I couldn't. And then... then he disappeared. Right out of my arms. Did you know if you catch a man right between the fourth and fifth rib with a knife, he'll bleed out in less than a minute? I didn't know that... but it's true..."

A dozen questions came to mind as she babbled to him, one after the other as she shared the confusing series of events. Instead of posing them to her, and Goddess above did he want to, Romeo continued to rock her and let her get the words out. He pet her hair and kissed her temple, letting it for for a short while longer before he spoke again. "I'm sorry, Addie. I'm so sorry..."

"I wanna go in..." She repeated her earlier statement, trying not to whimper alongside his ear before shifting to bury her face in his chest. He smelled like exertion and acrid magic, a sharp contrast to the tang of blood that seemed to radiate from her flesh and clothing. "Or somewhere else. I can't go home... his stuff is there. Can we go back to your place?"

"Goin' in won't fix anything," he told her softly before drawing her slowly back. His eyes fell to hers, searching. "We... there's nothin' you wanna see back at the Hollows, Addie. It's not any nicer right now. Let's just get a hotel room. Doesn't have to be fancy. We can just be alone. Somewhere quiet. I know a little place nearby that's decent enough. Come on."

Slowly, he urged her up to her feet while still holding onto her.

"Right... you're right... just, anywhere but here. Or home... I just can't..." Like a newborn foal, it took everything she had to stand upright without letting her legs give out on her. After the repeated cross town runs, the trio of conflicts of the evening, and the internal war that was waged in front of 2346 Alfheim, she was exhausted. Ro anchored her in a way she was grateful for but had no words to thank him just yet. At the edge of her self-centric concern, she instead thought to ask the inevitable. "What's happening at the Hollows?"

Another soothing sound was loosed against her temple, one arm tight around her slender waist and holding her steady despite his own deepening fatigue. He kissed her twice right there on the temple and coaxed them forward into a walk, towards another part of West End.

"Just another bad night. They happen. You know." She knew but she didn't know. Romeo had long since explained to his girlfriend the sorts of occurrences that turned his home into a mini warzone on a semi-regular basis, though he had kept her away when the trouble flared up. "Just another bad night in the Hollows. We don't need to go there tonight."

"I can help, you know." She mumbled. He had given her the Disney version of it all, the clean cut don't worry about it explanation that only served to make her worry more. There was little she understood about the Hollows and Ro's lacking transparency served to only exacerbate that fact. Her feet shuffled as they walked, dragging like her shoes were made of stone. She could have helped, maybe on a better day, but tonight the girl looked like she had gone as an extra from Carrie and could have used a shower before anything else. "Where're we going then?"

"I know you can." It was easy to tell that he meant it too. "I'm not ready to add one more burden to yours. Not yet. Not now. Let it be just mine and X's burden for just a little while longer. You? You're my medicine. You lighten the load. You're my safe haven." The backs of his knuckles stroked gently over her cheek. "Little motel. Clean sheets. Hot showers. Little Chinese restaurant on the first floor. Used to by my treat to myself years back after I scored some real money."

"Don't say that... you can't take poison and call it medicine. You can't run blind into a war zone and call it sanctuary." Addie wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand, a last ditch effort to keep her tears at bay. Her shoulders dropped with the weight of her disappointment. Such a distraction would have been welcome amidst the chaos of her life. For all that he had whispered of the Hollows' troubles, she could tell he was stretched thin. So many mouths to feed, so many weak to protect, so many that he carried with the help of only a small cadre of brave souls willing to step up to the task. "I don't have extra clothes with me... but I have money. Is it far?"

"Just a couple blocks," he reassured her and gave her another squeeze. Romeo wasn't ready to talk about the troubles of the Hollows. Not yet. "It's not far. You pay for the room. I'll buy food when you're hungry. We can take a long shower. Talk. Get you some sleep. Anything you need, mo chroi. "

"Promise?" She asked.

"Promise." He kissed her temple again.
