Dakota was a light sleeper.

It usually didn't take much of anything to wake him up. Years of living with the knowledge that a drug dealer could kick your door in at 3 in the morning had taught him the values of being able to instantly awaken at the slightest sound.

Thankfully, those were issues he didn't have to worry about these days. He was still clean, just a little miserable over not being able to use his left hand for much of anything.

He wanted to wake up early this morning and join Rosie for breakfast. She was always downstairs in the morning, and he had been trying to make it a habit of getting up earlier so he could be with her, but he hadn't been very successful with it the last few days.

This morning, around 7 AM, Dakota's left arm randomly swung at something in the air as he slept. That would've been fine...everyone does crazy little things while they sleep. But the problem here was that the back of Dakota's crudely bandaged, badly broken left hand slammed hard into the sharp edge of the oak night stand by his bed, instantly jolting him awake and sending him into a cursing rage as the shearing pain ripped through his hand. Dragging himself out of bed, he just held onto that hand as gingerly as he could, eyes shut tight, breathing in and out quickly, trying to make the pain pass.

It was moments like this that made him wonder why he wouldn't let someone like Jewell just heal it and get it over with.

Nope, he was paying for his temper...that's what he had to keep telling himself. His short fuse had gotten him into this, now he was suffering to remind himself NOT to do anything like it again. He had a good woman, and the last thing he wanted was to screw things up with her by letting her see him explode over something that didn't go his way.

So yeah, in his mind...this was the best way to curb his temper.

Slowly, he held his hand up to get a better look. It was literally shaking, and he couldn't make it stop. With a deep sigh, Dakota began to unwrap the bandage job he had done himself to get a better look.

God, it was ugly....
