It was a beautiful, crisp autumn night on the rooftop of the bar. Both moons were bright, the stars were twinkling and the air was far more pure up here. Alys sat upon an overturned crate, drumming along the sides with a nervously fidgeting fingers. It was close to time for MM's nightly appearance and she had the night off. She had made it a point to have this night off.
When he left her apartment that morning, she knew she wouldn't be going to work later. She claimed fatigue due to anxiety and Tony bought the excuse and told her to just take a sick day with pay. Now here she was...intending to get more than five minutes alone with her masked guardian angel.
He hadn't slowed down at all since the morning, getting home and immediately going to work on fixing up anything and everything he could. When the sunset, Danny had a different routine than normal: he shaved and showered. It was an odd thing to do when he was just going to go out and get sweaty, and it wasn't as if he cared enough about his face being presentable. But he was starting to think of his nights like date nights, even if he only saw Alys for a minute.
His mind wasn't where it usually was, and he never much paid attention to the surroundings on rooftops; especially when he had never run into anything out of the ordinary on them before in these late nights. So he arrived at the bar, leaping to its rooftop from the fire escape. He kept his eyes on the street, never looking inward and paying more attention to the front door as patrons began to empty the place.
"Fancy meeting you here, stranger." Her voice was low, though no one would have heard her speaking. With a deep breath inhaled, she attempted to steady her nerves as she stood up. Those fidgeting hands smoothed over the denim of her skirt, possibly trying to make it a few inches longer than just above the knee. Whenever she was unsure of herself she always reverted back to things she had been taught as a child and teen. It was wrong to be waiting here for him dressed in such a manner, though she was still mostly modestly dressed.
Arms hugged around her midsection as if she were cold despite the jean jacket she wore. A small clearing of her throat sounded before she finally allowed herself to begin walking towards that ledge. "Are you late or am I early, Jack?"
He nearly jumped right off the roof when he heard a voice behind him; it was rare for someone to sneak up on him, although perhaps he was just more relaxed around Alys, even if he wasn't aware of her presence. In an attempt to act cool, he slowly turned toward the sound of her voice... though his wide grin certainly showed in the bright light of the moons. "Hey! Aren't you supposed to be in there?" He thumbed over his shoulder, meaning the bar but, well... "Not that I'm complaining."
He slowly walked toward her, his hands held behind himself to hide their fidgeting. "Um, it's nice to see you." He just had to say that before she answered his question, feeling like she should be aware of it right off the bat.
"Nope...told Tony that I had a case of bad nerves after the attempted robbery last night that you rescued me from. So, I have the day off..." The meaning behind those words hung in the air between them. At least it felt like it to her. She was admitting to being on the roof of her place of work on a night off. The fact that she was waiting for him had to be obvious.
"It's nice to...uh...it's good to see you as well. I sort of figured I would...probably, maybe...see you up here." Just in case it wasn't obvious, she was going to make it so. Then she let out a high pitched giggle born of the extreme nervousness she suddenly felt. It was better than smacking herself upside the head like she wanted to over saying that. At least she hadn't started to stutter...yet; give her time, though. "You look...goo...less beat up. Clothes aren't torn to shreds, I mean." Cough.
Chuckling nervously, doing from foot to foot as he listened to her. He kept his eyes on her face, remembering looking at her in the moonlight like this long ago. She still deserved to have poems written in her honor, he thought. He rubbed the back of his head, chewing on the bottom of his lip as he heard that bright sound spill from her mouth. "Thanks. I... so that's what you said to get out of that? That was smart. Um, you look good too. I like seeing you not look all tired from working. I hope you slept well? I slept really well with you. Uh, not because you were sleeping with me, but I liked that too, but..."
All throughout he knew he was rambling, his fingers picking at the tape around his hands. He just couldn't help himself, though. Of course it was obvious she was waiting for him, which likely lead to the rambling and the next thing that escaped through the mess of words. "So do you wanna do something with me right now maybe?"
Watching him fidget as much as she was actually relaxed her; she wasn't the only one experiencing the awkward jitters of being in close proximity. Rocking back on her heels, she grinned a little, "Yup, that's what I said." A slight pause. "Uhm. Thanks...I think. Do you mean I normally look all tired?" Head was tilted slightly to the side, allowing that mane of near unruly honey blonde waves to cascade over her shoulder.
Her face began to burn and all she could hope was that he didn't notice it in the moonlight. What if he had x-ray vision or something? That thought made her eyes widen visibly and she adjusted her arms and legs to cover the vital areas she wouldn't want seen. Just in case.
"Yeah, I uh...I slept okay. I think I was so worried and exhausted that I just passed out or somethin'...still feel bad that I crowded you. I mean, you were injured...what if I had injured you more or somethin'?" Her turn to ramble.
His words were a mirror to the exact reason she was here on her extremely rare night off yet she hesitated; fighting an internal battle. She had been pushing herself to move on then at some point she had stopped pushing so hard and now here she was. Standing on a rooftop with a man she hadn't even seen without a mask, not even caring about that fact. This was the moment where she would either stay stagnant in her grief over the loss of Danny or she would move forward and be able to breathe clearly again. She weighed her words before speaking. "Yes." No question of what or where...just yes.
