Alystelle

It was a beautiful, crisp autumn night on the rooftop of the bar. Both moons were bright, the stars were twinkling and the air was far more pure up here. Alys sat upon an overturned crate, drumming along the sides with a nervously fidgeting fingers. It was close to time for MM's nightly appearance and she had the night off. She had made it a point to have this night off.
When he left her apartment that morning, she knew she wouldn't be going to work later. She claimed fatigue due to anxiety and Tony bought the excuse and told her to just take a sick day with pay. Now here she was...intending to get more than five minutes alone with her masked guardian angel.

He hadn't slowed down at all since the morning, getting home and immediately going to work on fixing up anything and everything he could. When the sunset, Danny had a different routine than normal: he shaved and showered. It was an odd thing to do when he was just going to go out and get sweaty, and it wasn't as if he cared enough about his face being presentable. But he was starting to think of his nights like date nights, even if he only saw Alys for a minute.

His mind wasn't where it usually was, and he never much paid attention to the surroundings on rooftops; especially when he had never run into anything out of the ordinary on them before in these late nights. So he arrived at the bar, leaping to its rooftop from the fire escape. He kept his eyes on the street, never looking inward and paying more attention to the front door as patrons began to empty the place.

"Fancy meeting you here, stranger." Her voice was low, though no one would have heard her speaking. With a deep breath inhaled, she attempted to steady her nerves as she stood up. Those fidgeting hands smoothed over the denim of her skirt, possibly trying to make it a few inches longer than just above the knee. Whenever she was unsure of herself she always reverted back to things she had been taught as a child and teen. It was wrong to be waiting here for him dressed in such a manner, though she was still mostly modestly dressed.

Arms hugged around her midsection as if she were cold despite the jean jacket she wore. A small clearing of her throat sounded before she finally allowed herself to begin walking towards that ledge. "Are you late or am I early, Jack?"

He nearly jumped right off the roof when he heard a voice behind him; it was rare for someone to sneak up on him, although perhaps he was just more relaxed around Alys, even if he wasn't aware of her presence. In an attempt to act cool, he slowly turned toward the sound of her voice... though his wide grin certainly showed in the bright light of the moons. "Hey! Aren't you supposed to be in there?" He thumbed over his shoulder, meaning the bar but, well... "Not that I'm complaining."

He slowly walked toward her, his hands held behind himself to hide their fidgeting. "Um, it's nice to see you." He just had to say that before she answered his question, feeling like she should be aware of it right off the bat.

"Nope...told Tony that I had a case of bad nerves after the attempted robbery last night that you rescued me from. So, I have the day off..." The meaning behind those words hung in the air between them. At least it felt like it to her. She was admitting to being on the roof of her place of work on a night off. The fact that she was waiting for him had to be obvious.

"It's nice to...uh...it's good to see you as well. I sort of figured I would...probably, maybe...see you up here." Just in case it wasn't obvious, she was going to make it so. Then she let out a high pitched giggle born of the extreme nervousness she suddenly felt. It was better than smacking herself upside the head like she wanted to over saying that. At least she hadn't started to stutter...yet; give her time, though. "You look...goo...less beat up. Clothes aren't torn to shreds, I mean." Cough.

Chuckling nervously, doing from foot to foot as he listened to her. He kept his eyes on her face, remembering looking at her in the moonlight like this long ago. She still deserved to have poems written in her honor, he thought. He rubbed the back of his head, chewing on the bottom of his lip as he heard that bright sound spill from her mouth. "Thanks. I... so that's what you said to get out of that? That was smart. Um, you look good too. I like seeing you not look all tired from working. I hope you slept well? I slept really well with you. Uh, not because you were sleeping with me, but I liked that too, but..."

All throughout he knew he was rambling, his fingers picking at the tape around his hands. He just couldn't help himself, though. Of course it was obvious she was waiting for him, which likely lead to the rambling and the next thing that escaped through the mess of words. "So do you wanna do something with me right now maybe?"

Watching him fidget as much as she was actually relaxed her; she wasn't the only one experiencing the awkward jitters of being in close proximity. Rocking back on her heels, she grinned a little, "Yup, that's what I said." A slight pause. "Uhm. Thanks...I think. Do you mean I normally look all tired?" Head was tilted slightly to the side, allowing that mane of near unruly honey blonde waves to cascade over her shoulder.

Her face began to burn and all she could hope was that he didn't notice it in the moonlight. What if he had x-ray vision or something? That thought made her eyes widen visibly and she adjusted her arms and legs to cover the vital areas she wouldn't want seen. Just in case.

"Yeah, I uh...I slept okay. I think I was so worried and exhausted that I just passed out or somethin'...still feel bad that I crowded you. I mean, you were injured...what if I had injured you more or somethin'?" Her turn to ramble.

His words were a mirror to the exact reason she was here on her extremely rare night off yet she hesitated; fighting an internal battle. She had been pushing herself to move on then at some point she had stopped pushing so hard and now here she was. Standing on a rooftop with a man she hadn't even seen without a mask, not even caring about that fact. This was the moment where she would either stay stagnant in her grief over the loss of Danny or she would move forward and be able to breathe clearly again. She weighed her words before speaking. "Yes." No question of what or where...just yes.

He wanted to reach out and run his fingers through her hair as he saw it tumble over her shoulder, his hand made a motion that way before he caught himself. "Alys, you can crowd me anytime, injured or not," he said with a goofy grin plastered on his masked face. The hand made a detour, aiming downward to reach for her hand. His naked fingers slid across the upper side of her hand, until they curled into her palms and fingers. His head was dipped, but he titled it upwards to look at her; even with the mask it was clearly a motion showing a bit of shyness. "Good."

"I'll be sure to remember that then..." As soon as the words left her mouth, she wanted to take them back. That sounded far too forward, you dolt! "I mean..." She just trailed off, unable to think up anything that would save her from her embarrassment.

When his fingers touched her hand, her eyes lowered so that her gaze was watching the movement of both of their hands. Her hand reacted to his touch by curling around his untaped fingers. A little nod at his pronouncement and she peeked up from beneath her lashes. Her own shyness was no secret and it kept her voice at an almost whisper as she agreed. "Good."

He almost started for the ledge with her in tow, but two things stopped him: he realized she probably couldn't navigate rooftops like he could; and he didn't really want to move. Not when he was here, holding her hand underneath the moonlight with barely any distance between them. He swallowed the lump in his throat. "Um, so can you teleport to places you haven't ever seen or... can I carry you?"

"I haven't ever tried to. I did teleport to RhyDin without ever seeing it, so I am going to assume I can. I just don't really know how..." That answered both questions. Her fingers curled a little more fully around his as she took a step closer.

"Okay..." he just trailed off as she stepped closer to him. His free hand found a place upon her hip, lightly at first in case she might recoil from it. "There's this great little secret place I know of. You really won't believe it." Maybe he was just talking to fill up time as he enjoyed the closeness of her, or maybe he just was trying to remember where that place was... he seemed to be having trouble concentrating on anything right now.

"Okay..." she replied, mirroring him. Though hers might have been a little more soft as that hand touched her hip. The thought occurred that she should step back but he had just mentioned carrying her...he likely would need to touch her in order to do that.

"Unbelievable is a word I have been using a lot to describe things lately." Then she nodded lightly as she took one more halting step closer and placed a hand upon his shoulder. "I would very much like to see this secret place."

"Good. I promise, you'll like it." The hand slid around to her back, and he reluctantly released her hand so he could lightly lean down and slide his under arm underneath her knees; standing straight with her, he only glanced to her legs once or twice or three times as he held her close in his arms... thank God for the mask to cover that. "I won't be able to do a lot of flips, so please don't judge me too harshly." Shooting her a quick grin before immediately darting for the edge of the rooftop, leaping at the last second and hurdling through the air; he landed softly on the adjacent building, with barely any sense of gravity when his feet touched the cement. He glanced at her face while continuing to run, just to gauge her reaction.

"I'm gonna hold you to that, Sam. No pressure or anything but this will be the deciding factor of whether I ever speak to you again so make it good." She managed to keep her face straight for all of five seconds before she began to laugh while he picked her up. Both legs were kicked straight out like the ladies she had seen in the old movies. Of course, they were dressed far better and the gentlemen carrying them didn't exactly have on a mask or cause the reaction of..."WHEEeeeeeeeee...I am jumping buildings!" That mixture of excitement, complete fear, and the heady intoxication of adrenaline was quite a rush for the mostly subdued young woman. "I think I will have to fire you if you don't do at least one flip," she managed to giggle out as they leapt onto yet another building.

There had been a few moments during the first jump when she was certain she would have to teleport or fall to her death but she overcame the fear; clinging more tightly to him. Now, however...she was just going to show off as well. She pulled her gaze from his face to get a good look at the rooftop of the next building then closed her eyes and whisked them from their spot upon one roof to the other. Opening her eyes, she just grinned. It was obvious she was enjoying this immensely; she didn't have the opportunity to unwind like this. This was what freedom must taste like.

That should have thrown him off, the sudden change of scenery and being about twenty feet ahead of where he was just one second ago... but Danny was going right now on adrenaline and focus, grinning ear to ear as she joined in the fun. He glanced to her, shouting as he took one jump over an extra wide chasm between buildings that seemed much too far when they started the leap, but just barely clearing it. He laughed as if he was surprised he did so. "Okay! One flip! But if you throw up on me, you're cleaning my shirt!"

They crossed midway across town, through areas that Alys might have heard of as dangerous; Danny navigated them quickly and without incident. On their last building with nothing left to jump to, Danny still leaped from the ledge, leaning his head backwards to force his body to turn over backwards; he was upside down looking up at the street below for what seemed like an eternity before completing the flip, landing on both of his feet like a trained gymnast -- he didn't hop, nailing the landing. "Ta-da!"

Both arms were around his neck now and she clapped excitedly. "One flip! I promise I won't throw up!" Then they were free falling and she couldn't help but hold her breath and hold onto him with a death grip. She did manage to keep her eyes open, wanting to experience what it was like to be him in some small way. Free falling while watching the pavement race towards her was definitely a way to do that.

It seemed that they were in slow motion and then they were upright. Alys immediately clapped a hand over her mouth and leaned forward like she was about to vomit; her belly had flopped enough to make such a thing possible. Then with a feigned groan, she removed her hand and threw her head forward towards his neck. She couldn't follow through, however, as cackling laughter overcame her ability to feign seriousness. "That was almost the most exciting time of my life! I give you a 9.3...nono...9.4 because you are cute."

He recoiled as she faked the action, then stared at her through his mask. "Oh, a wise girl, huh? You're lucky I didn't drop you right on your very nice rear end for that!" And right then what she said seemed to hit him. Even with the mask, it was quite easy to read the smug look plastered all over his face. "Cute, huh? Well, I suppose I can forgive you for that stunt since you called me cute."

He still carried her even though it was clear there were no more rooftops to jump. They had ended up at the entrance of a park with the pathway winding through to a small grotto at the center. The park didn't appear to be kept up very well, with weeds and hedges growing untamed. The flowers and plants on the grotto also appeared to be dead, or at least nearing death as winter approached. "Now, I know this place doesn't seem to be much to look at, and nobody ever comes but... that's part of what I like. I'll show you, but I'll have to put you down." A slight frown crossed his lips as he said the last words, obviously quite happy to have Alys in his arms and in no hurry to release her.

Alys feigned a gasp then swatted at his shoulder. "You wouldn't dare drop me on my...oh!" The words finally sunk in. She felt a blush creeping up her cheeks but forced herself not to look away. She even managed to pinch one of his cheeks when she saw that smug look.

Even though they were standing still, she still held onto him like they were leaping through the air. Looking around she shrugged. "Beauty isn't always visible at first...I think I can give it a chance so I can maybe see it the way you do." He wasn't the only one that didn't appear overjoyed at ending their current arrangement. She sighed a little and released one arm from his neck but didn't appear to be hurrying to do the same with her other one.

Looks like they met halfway, as he crouched down and set a knee to the grass as he gently placed her feet on the earth. With the bare skin of her legs so close, he was tempted to press a kiss to them, but refrained... barely. With a glance over his shoulder to her, he set one hand just on the ground in front of him. She would see his back expanding and deflating with deliberate, slow breaths.

Though the park was dimly lit, the light of both moons still provided enough light on the grotto and the surrounding area for her to see what was happening: flowers along the degraded surface of the artificial cave began to open their petals and bloom; grass that was brown and dead turned to a lush green; and sickened vines with brittle stems renewed and even started to grow. Danny remained in this position a moment longer, then stood with a zenlike smile showing on his face.

He looked over to Alys, then the grotto. One hand reached for a recently bloomed flower that was purple and seemed to almost glow underneath the moon. It was plucked and held out to her. "I don't know what type this is, but I know I like them. Hope you do too."

Her fingers brused over the top of his head, as though brushing through hair that was covered by the mask, as he placed her on the ground. She finally let go of him and took a step away. As she watched him, she pressed both hands to her face in amazement. What she was watching defied all logic; it shouldn't be able to happen. Yet it was. Then she watched him pick a flower and hold it out to her. One hand lowered to accept, fingertips brushing over the bare skin of his hand as she did so. "It's beautiful, Jack. All of it. The whole night..." It was definitely one she wasn't likely to ever forget.

"You're beautiful, Alystelle." It was just natural to say, and said without any thought. She was always beautiful to him, and he had waited years to tell her this once again. He didn't drop his hand, but instead moved it to her hair; he passed up the chance earlier tonight, but wouldn't let that happen again. Letting his fingertips slide through her honey blonde hair, but very light... it was like touching a painting at a museum. Maybe he shouldn't have, but he almost needed to just to be sure this was real and not a dream.

Her gaze dropped to stare at the flower; in truth, she was just at a loss for how to respond to that comment. A smile traveled along her lips, momentarily pulling up the corners and causing a small dimple in her right cheek to form. "Thank you." She coughed softly and cleared her throat, suddenly nervous again as he touched her hair. Her gaze shifted upwards in small increments until she was staring into his masked eyes. Words failed her at that moment so she just tilted her head ever-so-slightly towards his hand; just enough to convey that she liked it where it was.

Encouraged by her movement, however slight it was, Danny brushed his fingers through the layered waves of her hair for another moment before his palm ended up on her cheek. He was captivated by her eyes, looking between them as he took a step closer, his opposite hand once again finding familiar space upon her waist. Either consciously or through reaction, his head shifted in the direction of the tilt opposite to hers. "Thank you for spending the night with me." The ambiguity of the statement purposeful, as he likely could have meant last night, this night, or both.

Her breath caught in her chest as his fingers slid through her hair and he stepped closer. That opposite i head tilt wasn't lost on her and those eyes he was so captivated by widened slightly. Her hand dropped to rest upon his at her hip and the other pressed to his chest, just over his heart. "No...thank you. This night has been remarkable. I haven't felt like this in a long while." Since Danny died, she thought then shook it away.

Then she did something that her brain screamed for her to undo...she stepped away. Did she know he was going to kiss her? She felt like he might and she knew she wasn't ready for that just yet. Part of her was; that part that was protesting so loudly in her head. The more reserved part of her couldn't do more than continue to hold onto his hand.

If Danny was asked at that moment if he was going to try to kiss her, he wouldn't have been able to give a firm answer. He wasn't thinking it, not on the surface, but it certainly seemed like he was preparing to. It was only when she stepped away that he realized how close he was -- they were -- to that moment. Was it a bad idea to want to kiss her? He would never admit to thinking yes. Regardless, he still smiled a soft, genuine smile to her. "I'm glad. I haven't had a night like this in a long time either. Maybe we can do this again?"
