Current Day

Alystelle was moving through the RhyDin marketplace at a leisurely pace as she did each day at this time. The numerous carts holding fruits and vegetables were given a glance as she wove her way through them to make her way to the stall that held wheels of cheese and freshly baked loaves of bread.

Once she had purchased enough to feed her two brothers, David, Mara, and herself, she gave a longing look at the honey cake that sat on display in front of her. There were a few coins left and Alys knew that cheese and bread wouldn?t be enough to satisfy all of those growing boys; they nearly ate her out of house and home on a daily basis. That honey cake was given one last regretful glance before she made her way back to the fruit vendors. Thanks to purchasing day old bread in lieu of the fresher baked, she had managed to save enough to add something sweet to their meal. With some luck, William would be bringing home something from the ranch he worked on. The lady that owned it usually sent home eggs or fresh milk and that always helped to stretch out their meager food budget.

?How did we get here??

Alys asked herself this for probably the millionth time since they had all arrived. She knew, for the most part, how they had arrived. The question was more of a generalized expression of her frustration at their circumstances. Everyone pitched in but still they barely scraped by. Alys was on the verge of accepting an offer from a less than savory character that would ensure that the younger three would have a far better life.

?You?ll do what needs to be done for their survival. No use crying over spilled milk.?

She whispered this before forcibly stopping herself before she could start crying. She had promised Danny, when he went back to college after his parents died, that she would always look out for Mara and David. So that is what she would do.

The thought of Danny did what it had always done, since the night her world went topsy-turvy. This time she couldn?t force away the tears that filled her eyes and began to spill down her pale cheeks.

Somehow she made it home to the small apartment she shared with the Brooks siblings and her own brothers. She had a few minutes before she needed to leave for work so she sat down and began thumbing through her battered journal until she reached the page that held the picture of Danny she had drawn so long ago.

Alys had been afraid that she would forget his face since she was certain she would never see him again, so she had drawn it from memory. It had been drawn in vain because she saw his face, in her mind, everyday without fail.

?I wish I could just speak to you once more...?

The image of his face was traced over by a fingertip before she closed the journal and replaced it on the top closet shelf in the bedroom she shared with Mara.

?Time to put away the past and move on with your life, Alys. Time to make good on that promise.?

Not grieving further for what she was about to do; she was of an iron resolve now. Hands were lifted to try to finger comb her hair into something more than the typical low bun she wore before she looked down at her clothes and frowned a little. Alys didn?t really own anything that wasn?t proper and dignified so she simply unbuttoned the top three buttons of her shirt and avoided the mirror as she left. Time to go to work and see if that offer was still available.

She slowly made her way to the bar where she worked as a waitress, being in no hurry to get there. Her boss, Tony, would be there to ogle her the moment she walked through the door and that was when she planned to revive those old flirting skills and take care of business.

?How did it all come to this??

The routine had been the same for Danny for the past year or so now. He?d wake in the morning after sleeping for a few hours, if even that, and go to work on assembling the dojo. If he was able, he?d find an odd job to do around town or at the mall. Then at night, he would put on his mask and make the rounds. He had nothing else; all of his time was spent by himself, around strangers, or in the company of criminals. Though once social, he found himself withdrawing further and further into his obsession all built around his secondary life.

This was just another night, one which Danny couldn?t distinguish from the previous one, or the one before that. He wasn?t even sure what day this would be, if he left on a Wednesday evening but it had become a Thursday night... or was it still Wednesday night? It didn?t matter. All he knew is that this was the time where some of the local bars and clubs closed and there was always something going on that the watch didn?t pay attention to, or were just unable to.

He had decided to go a little outside his usual zone tonight. His activity and dedication had made a positive effect in the areas he frequented, with crime rates dropping mostly due to his efforts. The message was spreading and people were taking notice. But not here. As Danny kept to the unfamiliar rooftops, his eyes stayed on the streets as the bar across the street began to empty. His hand wiped over the smooth cement of the rooftop as he remained in his perch, seeing nothing that would require his intervention so far tonight, though he kept his eye on a couple of stragglers who seemed to be waiting on someone; one of them kept in the doorway and wouldn?t let the door close. Then a flash of chrome reflected by the streetlight confirmed his suspicions. An after hours robbery.

Or that was their intention, at least. Danny was anxious to burn some pent up frustration on the two, especially for the guns. Two jumps had him behind the men, and his landing was even quieter than their whispers. He?d been at this so long it was all so routine, and tonight he wasn?t in the mood. He grabbed the gun hand of the first man in line, holding it steady while he sent a palm into his elbow, making it bend in the wrong direction. His scream wasn?t as fast as Danny; before the sound could reach the second man?s ears Danny had already sent a forearm into the back of his head, crushing it against the wall.

As the unconscious man crumpled to the ground, Danny poked his masked head in the door to shout ?Got a couple robbers out here!? and said no more because suddenly he couldn?t seem to remember where he was. Not when he saw that hauntingly familiar face in the last place he would have ever expected to see it, if he had ever expected to see it at all.

He didn?t consider what it looked like, a masked man standing in a doorway shouting about robbers. The mirrored lenses hiding the width of his eyes as he stared at the face... her face. His mouth slightly agape as his mind raced to tell his body to do something! Anything!

There were no signals incoming. No sense of fight or flight. He remained there, his body shrouded in dark green and his face half-masked while he was standing in the doorway of the bar; trying to comprehend that standing mere feet from him was Alystelle. His mouth then moved without any input from his brain, the word tumbling out: ?You??

Alys was wiping down the bar, and watching as the last stragglers finally began to leave. A hand lifted to wave at the bouncer, indicating that she was fine and he should leave.

?Just gonna finish up here and then I?m leaving too, Marty.?

?Sure you don?t need me to walk you home, Aly? There?s some nasty creatures out there just waiting on a pretty girl like you...?

Alys laughed and shook her head lightly. ?I promise I?ll be alright. Tonight will be the same as any other night.?

The big man hesitated before finally shrugging his massive shoulders as he walked back through the kitchen and out the back door. Alys sighed a little and looked over towards the entrance where the last couple of customers were holding open the door.

She had been distracted enough by Marty?s inquiries that she hadn?t paid much attention to what was going on. Like she had told him, tonight would be the same as any other night. She worked seven nights a week and nothing much ever happened other than Marty throwing out a few guys that didn?t understand that the waitress, and sometimes bartender, didn?t want to go home with some sloppy drunk.

?All right boys, I?m closing up shop....time to go home.?

She turned her back to the pair as she walked to the break in the bar and then around it. When she looked back, the ?customers? were laying on the ground and there stood some guy with a mask covering half of his face, shouting something about robbers as he stood over them.

Cornflower blue eyes widened then were tightly closed as she held her breath and did whatever she did (she really had no idea) to make herself vanish and reappear behind the bar. Alys grabbed the bat that Tony kept under the bar then held her breath, closed her eyes tightly, envisioned where she wanted to be and then did "that thing" once more so that she was suddenly standing right behind the masked man. The very second she ?landed? and opened her eyes once more, she drew her arm back and then slammed the bat into the back of his head. She heard one word leave his mouth prior to doing this, however. He had questioned, ?You?? And so her reply was...

?Yeah me! Cause hey, I ain?t in the mood to be dealin' with punk thugs in the middle of the night. My feet are killin' me and now I gotta stay here so the dumbass Watch can take a statement and haul your sorry butt in. You should be ashamed of yourself. I hope they call your mama.?

That smooth-as-honey Southern drawl was far thicker now than it had been earlier. When Alys was aware of it, she managed to tone the twang down a little, but in times of stress she reverted back to that deep Mississippi lilt.

Two things happened in a very short period of time: he was face to face with a living memory, and then it was replaced with a jarring sensation that almost knocked him loopy. He should be used to unnatural occurrences such as this, but he wasn?t expecting it here and now, and from her. Then again, was it even her or just an uncanny resemblance?

He may have had what equaled to years of training and been tougher than most, but a bat to the head is still a bat to the head. His reaction is what set him apart; though he took a step forward and set a hand on the wall, he didn?t utter any sound of pain and was quick to collect his scrambled thoughts. Before she could realize that the bat swing wasn?t going to fell him and take another shot, he quickly turned; and though he could feel the warm liquid running down his neck from the open wound on the back of his head, he was focused only on Alys.

?I dealt with the punks,? he growled, lightly kicking a foot against one of the unconscious men at his feet. ?So you?re gonna have to stay anyway. Maybe next time don?t attack the guy who just helped you out??

She wouldn?t be likely to notice it, but he was intensely studying her face and waiting for her to speak again. Her voice... if he could see her speak, maybe it would make him believe it was really Alys and not just someone his sleep-deprived mind was making into her. His posture was tensed, since he wasn?t really paying attention to that bat and he didn?t know if she was going to vanish and try to bean him again.

?So what?s your name? I should know that way I can add you to my list of ungrateful savees.?

Alystelle

Those big blue eyes widened further as she watched the man she had just whacked with a bat catch himself from falling.

?Oh crap.?

Here she was, with bat in hand, standing on the sidewalk in the middle of the night with a man that was able to continue standing after being hit in the head. This did not bode well for her, she assumed; so her stance was one of readiness, thinking he would retaliate.

?God Almighty! What the heck do they feed you boys ?round here?? Because she was certain he should have fallen and the fact that he hadn?t meant he was made of better stock than the last guy she had to knock out. Poor sucker, he wasn?t nearly as tough as the masked man in front of her.

Then he started to speak and there was something about that voice; it tickled a memory at the back of her mind. Which led her gaze to his lips...a mouth that looked eerily like one she had kissed so many times in the past. That was impossible, however. There was no way Daniel Brooks could be in RhyDin. There had been a plane crash and it was assumed that everyone on that plane had died. Right along with her heart.

Alys shook her head to clear away the haunting memory of her past love. She needed to be mentally present for this encounter.

?How was I to know you weren?t one of the punks? Good Lord...look atcha.? She waved the bat haphazardly towards him, in a downward motion to indicate his clothing. ?You look like somethin? that done crawled out of one of them comic book things my brother used to read. How would I know you didn?t just escape the loony bin and were pickin? off folks left and right??

Hand on her jutted hip now, she was really starting to fume. ?Standin? o?er two knocked out bodies, wearin? that ridiculous outfit and hollerin? ?bout robbers. I?ll be switched if you didn?t just make me mad ?nough to smack ya with this bat again! Don?t you call me an ungrateful nothin? or you might be findin? the business end of this shoved up your hiney!? She even ?hmph?d? after that; still wiggling the bat in the air between them.

?Why in the world would I tell some psycho escapee from the loony bin what my name is? That is just craziness!?

?Uh,? was all he could get out. Was he just chastised? That hadn?t happened to him in a long time, and never in a situation like this. His body relaxed as he rubbed the back of his head, feeling the injury but ignoring the pain. The confusion of the moment lost him in what he was supposed to be doing, but the more she spoke the more certain he was.

?That?s sort of the thing. Dress up like this to act like someone from a comic book; wear a mask to protect my identity. All that,? he waved a hand around, making sure to guide the bat away from him as she waved it between them. ?Besides, notice the gun there?? The hand turned to a pointer as he gestured near her feet.

?And you?re safe, so I should really go now. Just curious about your name because I thought you were someone else.? There was a beat before he told the lie. ?But you?re not who I thought.?

The lie was for her protection, he told himself. And for both of their sakes. This was Alys standing in front of him and his entire body screamed at him to wrap her up in his arms and proclaim who he was and how... well, it would just be too much for her; too much for him. At least, right now it would. He gave a glance up at the bar?s sign, memorizing the name so he could come back tomorrow dressed in something a little less intimidating.

As he backed away, shielded eyes still glued to her face, he gave one last word to her: ?I?m glad you?re okay.? The words were spoken without the gravel he added to every sentence beforehand. They were genuine, coming from the heart and not from the person hiding behind a mask.

Alystelle

Alys tipped her head to the side as he spoke of dressing this way purposefully to be like one of the comic characters.

?Huh...ya don?t say. So you fight crime just like Spiderman or Superman or somethin?? Rescue damsels in distress?? She looked pointedly at the bat then back towards him with a little smirk on her lips. It was rather obvious what she was hinting at even without speaking the words.

Alys might seem a tad bit more hardened than she had been when they had last been in one another?s company. The necessities were learned in order to survive in a place where humans were the minority and apparently a delicacy for any number of other creatures.

Her gaze fell to the gun and she paled just a bit, which he might not see. ?Yeah, I?m safe. Not so sure ?bout you if you ain?t careful. People in this part of town tend to take matters into their own hands since The Watch is worthless.?

Having decided moments before that he was alright, she had the decency to look sheepish as she spoke the next few words. ?Uh...sorry ?bout your head there. I just saw you standin? there and I mighta reacted before I thought ?bout what I was doin?. No, uh...hard feelin?s, right? I mean, next time somebody comes to rob me, you?ll be here...right?? She may seem so much different until this very moment when her old shyness came back to color her cheeks a little, which he might not see, and to tinge her voice with that old schoolgirl uncertainty.

She gestured to the doorway with the bat. ?You want a root beer or somethin? while I take a look at your skull and see if I did much damage?? Now that she had decided they were on the same side, Alystelle was the epitome of sweet concern.

?I rescue anyone in distress, although clearly someone who can teleport and swing a bat like that doesn?t need much protection,? said with what could be considered a good-natured smirk. ?Besides, I?m sure that?s what your boyfriend is for.?

He nearly cringed after the words left his mouth. That was smooth, Danny, he thought to himself. Not at all like a fumbling schoolboy awkwardly hitting on the prom queen. She was going to see right through that, so a quick recovery was in order.

?It?s no hard feelings, no, and I?ll be around to check up on you. But the Watch and I aren?t on the best terms since I sort of busted up one of their stations and I?m pretty sure am still on the wanted list. So I?ll have to pass on sticking around. Besides, I?d have to take off my mask for you to check that out and, you know, secret identity.? He was rambling, and he knew it, but he couldn?t help himself. At the last part he tapped the mask and gave a light smile, her voice had changed to how he remembered it; he knew each moment he lingered would be a moment that would bring him closer to declaring who he was.

For a brief instant, he wondered if that would be so bad.

Alystelle

Date: 2012-10-01 21:44 EST
?Hey...I don?t really know how to teleport. I just like...close my eyes and imagine where I want to be. Sometimes it don?t work at all. Sometimes I end up in weird places with no idea how to get back.? She grinned a little sheepishly at that admission. ?So, maybe I do need a little rescuing sometimes...don?t let the bat fool ya!? Or the tough girl act.

Alys cleared her throat a little to give herself time to figure out what to say. Which ended up simply being the truth. To a stranger. That wore a mask and tights. Slick.

?My boyfriend died in a plane crash in a different realm...or whatever Earth is called here. Back home...he died back home.? Clearing her throat again, she averted her gaze. Why had she told him about Danny? Good goin?, Alys. God have mercy, she thought to herself.

Alystelle gave a little sardonic laugh as she heard him speak of trouble with The Watch. ?By God, they are just jealous that you manage to do something when all they do is sit on their lazy rear ends. I cannot tell you how many times someone has tried to rob me and I call them and they don?t do a thing. So I just started takin? care of business with this here...? She gave the bat a little tap upon the pavement. He was mighty familiar with her ability to take care of business.

For whatever reason, Alys rushed out with more words then instantly blushed until she could feel the tips of her ears burn. ?I- I could always use some backup...like tonight. He had a gun...and I didn?t see him. See?? She found herself tongue tied and on the verge of starting to stutter again. She hadn?t done that in years really.

She frowned just a little when he said he couldn?t stick around but found herself snickering a little as he touched the mask. ?Yeah, I get it...superheroes and their super-secret identities...? That would have been just fine if she had stopped talking, but no...she had to add more. ?Doesn?t bode well for your dating life, I wouldn?t think...? Could her face grow any hotter than it already was? Surely there was steam coming out of her ears by this point. ?Does your girlfriend know you beat people up and scare poor innocent young women??

She was such a smooth talker.

Daniel Brooks

Date: 2012-10-01 22:34 EST
He could feel his heart sink when she spoke of the plane crash. He never really had time to think about the impact it might have had on everyone else in his life, maybe he felt too guilty to even try. He carried so much weight from that accident, the only survivor, but nobody even knew that much. And here again he was being selfish, thinking only of himself and his problems when his friends sacrificed themselves for him.

?I...? he started, then felt a frog in his throat. Clearing it, his mouth opened to start again when he heard a whistle in the distance. His eyes went past Alys and over her shoulder, where he caught sight of the Watch finally arriving. They shouted and pointed their weapons at him; of course they would, he?s in a mask and appearing like he?s confronting a girl with a bat.

?I don?t have a girlfriend, miss. But maybe tomorrow I?ll stop by and fill out an application to be your boyfriend,? he quipped with a grin, quickly getting his mood to lighten again and acting like the person in the mask, and not acting like the lovestruck Daniel Brooks beneath it. ?So, um, be careful, okay??

With a flash of teeth he tipped an imaginary cap to her, and as the Watch closed in he turned and disappeared behind the corner of the building. Some Watch members pursued, but by the time they turned the corner he was already hidden in the shadows of the rooftops. Danny stood vigil for a few moments, to make certain that Alys was taken care of and in good hands.

Or at least, hands that would be good enough for now. He would only ever trust his own hands when it came to her. She may not have needed it, but she just gained her own personal guardian angel tonight.

Alystelle

Alys leaned in a little as the masked man began to speak again. She was enthralled, hanging on his words; he sounded so much like Danny. It was as if she had him back for this few moments, therefore she didn?t want to let him go.

Of course, when she heard that shrill whistle announcing the presence of the Watch, it broke the spell and possibly a small piece of her heart as well. He was just a nice guy doing a good deed and she just happened to be the lucky recipient. That was it. This wasn?t Danny and she knew she had to stop looking for him in every man?s face. It was time to move on. Danny was her past and her past had almost killed her.

Maybe it was with this in mind that she laughed at that light hearted cheesy pickup line the stranger spoke.

?No girlfriend. Hm. Okay then. I?m not sure there is an application...maybe I should make one just for you?? Then with her free hand she pretended to hold a pen.

?Must look good in tights...? She gave him a once over and made an imaginary mark.

?Check.?

?Must be able to take a bat to the head and still stand...? She grinned up at him then made another mark.

?Check.?

?My name is Alystelle, by the way. Most people call me Alys or Aly or darlin? or sweetcheeks. But if you wanna keep your teeth, I would suggest sticking with one of the first three.? She offered a sweet-as-honey smile before adding...

?Seems like you might be just the hero I have been searching for.?

Alys wouldn?t know yet just how true that sentence was. She had been searching for Danny, even knowing he was gone; every face she saw was his. This stranger was no different, regardless of her trying to make it so. She felt a twinge of guilt in her chest over flirting, even harmlessly, with someone other than him. It had been three years since the crash of that plane and her entire world.

It really -was- time to move on but every face would continue to be his.

She watched as M.M (she had decided this would be his name)...the Masked Man ran off and disappeared around the building. The chuckle was still on her lips at the imaginary cap tipping but soon it faded as she stared after him. It was almost like watching Danny leave...he had been that similar. Or maybe she had just wanted to see it...maybe the man was nothing at all like Daniel Brooks and it was all her imagination.

It was with a sigh of frustration and confusion that she turned to the two Watch members that were asking her questions.

?No, I didn?t see what happened or who that man was. He saved me and then left...? She bit her tongue to stop herself from making some wisecrack about the donuts that had been saved by them finally deciding to show up.

Her gaze strayed past one of them to the corner of that building once more.

Later that morning...

Alys spent the night sitting up on the top bunk of the bunkbeds she shared with Mara. The tiny room afforded them a slight amount of privacy from the three brothers that they shared the apartment with. So with flashlight in hand, as well as her journal, she went about her nightly ritual of telling Danny goodnight.

She wrote letters in her journal, addressed to him; they were always filled with the mundane happenings of her day that she would have shared with him in person had he been there. Some might find this behavior crazy; others may recognize it for unresolved grief and an inability to let go.

Tonight it was more difficult than normal to put the pen down or to soothe that overwhelming feeling of loss. The encounter with the masked man had shaken her far more than she had let on. Not because she had been afraid due to the robbery but because of the man himself. There had been a few moments when she would have sworn Danny was beneath that mask; only to mentally chastise herself that it was impossible.

The sound of his voice, once the gravelly displeasure had evaporated, as well as that partially nerdy (though adorable) unsure way of speaking to her had sounded so much like Danny that it made her heart hurt for want of him. She had forced herself into silly flirtations with the man to help ease that pain and possibly just to hold onto that little fantasy, in the back of her mind, where Danny wasn?t dead but standing right in front of her cracking jokes. She missed his sense of humor and how it never failed to rescue her from the reality of her gloomy life.

Into the wee hours of the morning Alys sat there writing; telling him about the excitement of her night.
