The Makayen barn was all bedecked in strings of lights crisscrossing along the rafters. Bales of hay were stacked as seats throughout the inside and outside of the barn; picnic tables and benches were organized down the center of one end of the barn and were laden with food and drinks. On the other end of the barn a dance floor was marked off with railroad ties, metal folding chairs lined along the walls on that end of the barn for those too shy to dance.
Pumpkins of all shapes and designs littered the floor with candles alight within. Lanterns were hung along the walls and placed in the middle of the picnic tables inside the barn and outside, thin colored paper in hues of orange, red, gold, and pale green were wrapped around the lantern globes so that the harvest colors were cast about in a soft glow.
The band's instruments consisted of fiddles, banjos, acoustic guitars, bass guitars and drums that were ready to liven up the evening with various forms of music, guaranteed to be loud and boisterous. There were couples dancing the two step upon the dance floor, others sitting in the folding chairs at the sidelines clapping to the beat.
The farm women were busy pulling various meats from the oven, fresh biscuits and rolls, gravy, and all of the other hot foods were being whisked from the stove to the tables. The men were sitting back with their drinks, upon the bales of hay, catching up on the news from surrounding farms and talking about sports. Some were watching the friendly game going on between the teenage boys out in the yard. Children were running here and there, any mother in shouting distance was the mother that had authority. It truly took a community to raise a child, after all.
