After leaving the Red Dragon, David and Riley enjoyed a leisurely stroll.? She was snuggled against him, arm looped through his, head resting lightly on his shoulder as they walked. As they entered the Market District, Riley was doing a little window shopping as they passed by some of her favourite stores. Although he wasn't a big shopper himself, he made a mental note of which stores she seemed to linger on the longest, filing the information away for future present material. She lingered in front of a jewelry store for a moment, eyes caught by a platinum, sapphire, and diamond wedding set and an antique cameo on a bit of velvet ribbon.? She actually let go of David and moved up against the window when she spotted the cameo, a soft sigh escaping her throat.? "Look at that," she breathed.
"Wow," he said, moving up beside her.? "That's quite a piece."? He glanced sidelong at her, wondering if she was just admiring the jewelry in general, or if the significance of it was affecting her, too.? He was always extremely careful about bringing up relationship matters with her; she got panicked easily.
"Looks like something my grandmother had.? She left it to my cousin in her will, though."? She gave the wedding set another long, lingering glance but said nothing about it, before turning to take his hand and continue their walk to Carito's.? "I can't remember if you've ever told me about your grandparents."
"I never knew them," he said, stroking her wrist lightly with one finger.? "My parents left China when mom was pregnant with me, and we've never been back."
Riley glanced at him, a brow raised.? "And they never came to visit, either?"
He shook his head.? "It wasn't that easy to leave when I was younger...and they were too old to travel.? They passed away a few years back.? My dad went to their funeral service, but I couldn't get time off work, and mom didn't want to go back."
She made a thoughtful moue.? "Kinda sounds like what happened with my mother's parents.? They were not well pleased when she married a gaijin. I should say my grandmother was upset with Mama-san.? Grandfather was happy for her.? He really liked Daddy.? Even flew in from Kyoto when Daddy graduated from medical school when I was three."
"He ever convince your grandmother to accept it?"
She shook her head sadly.? "It got worse when I was born, being half Japanese and all.? Grandmother wouldn't accept it.? I met her exactly once, when I was 15, at Grandfather's funeral.? She refused to speak to me."
He reached up and stroked her shoulder softly.? "Her loss," he said seriously.? "People are f*cking stupid sometimes."
She caught his hand and pressed a kiss into the palm of it before asking, "How long have your parents been married?"
He smiled at the kiss, loving the feel of her extra-warm skin on his.? "Thirty-seven years," he said.? "They got married about three months before I was conceived."
"Wow," she said softly.? "My parents have been together for...I think 33 years.? Maybe 34."? She glanced aside at him.? "Is it bad that I can't remember exactly?"
He flashed her a quick grin.? "Nah, I wouldn't remember either if it wasn't pretty much exactly a year from their marriage to my birth."
"At least it wasn't a year after," she teased.? Then she sobered and her steps grew slower.? "Ever think about that?? Marriage, a family, staying together until you die?"
He snorted at the first bit.? "That would've caused big trouble for them back in China."? He nodded.? "Yeah, I've thought about it.? I had intended to propose to Charlotte, back in San Fran, if I'd gotten my shield."? He stopped, leaving unsaid the part she already knew well, how everything fell apart for him.? He felt a little surprise at the lack of pain or sadness the memory produced in him now.? Then he realized that it really wasn't that strange, considering he was happy now.
"That's what Andy and I decided to do - wait until I graduated from law school.? It would have been hard to be married to him before then, with me still in Boston and him in Pittsburgh."? She sighed unhappily.? "He...well, you know what he did.? It was a week before our wedding."? David's lack of apparent sadness brought a tiny smile to her face; she liked to think it was because he was happy now.
"Yeah," he said, nodding.? "Hell of a thing for him to do."? He didn't really have a lot of pity for people who took their own lives.? It was just a big cop out, if you asked him.? Worse, it always left a lot of unhappy people behind.? He paused for a second, then asked, with extreme casualness, "Ever thought about it again?"
"Rhys and I were engaged."? She didn't say much else until they were almost at Carito's.? "He never had the chance to get me a ring."
"I'm sorry."? He squeezed her hand and let the subject drop before they ended up having a depressed meal.?
"Me, too," she answered and stepped up to pull open the door to the restaurant.? Instantly they were assailed with the scents of tomatoes and mozzarella, garlic and basil, a heady wine.? The hostess smiled hugely when she spotted Riley and David and then immediately took them to their favourite table, the one with the best view of the small Romanesque fountain and its plantings.
He took a deep breath of the delicious smells that permeated the restaurant.? It made his stomach growl.? He waited for Riley to sit down before dropping into his own seat.? While he knew she'd be annoyed if he pulled the chair out for her, it still felt rude to sit down first.
She grinned at him.? "You're such a good boy," she said and glanced up at Mr Carito, the restaurant's owner himself, stopped by their table, bringing with him a basket of bread sticks, a saucer of piping-hot marinara and a bottle of house red.? "Signora Riley!? Signore David!? How lovely to see you again!" the huge man bellowed cheerfully at them.
"Bongiorno, Signore Carito," he answered, all but exhausting his knowledge of Italian.? "Good to see you, too."
Carito slapped David on the back, a chuckle of laughter as big as the man pouring out into the room.? "We have fish tonight, Signora Riley.? I think the Kitty likes fish?" he asked with a little twinkle of mirth in his eyes as he poured two glasses of wine for David and Riley and set the bottle down on the table.
She grinned.? "Yes, the Kitty likes fish very much.? What kind is it and how is it prepared?"? She picked up her wine and took a sip of it.? As always, Carito had picked out the perfect wine, rich, heady, and flavourful.
"It is Orata al Cartoccio, Signora Riley.? Sea bass with shrimp and clams and garlic and tomatoes, wrapped in paper and baked."
"That sounds great," he said, taking a sip of the wine as well.? Restaurants were about the only place he drank wine, unless a host offered it to him, but this stuff was really good.? "What do you think, la mei?"
"I think I want that," she said.? "And risotto and a salad?" she asked and glanced up at Carito.? He nodded and turned to David.? "The same, Signore David?"
"Yes, please."?
"Bueno.? Back soon," Carito said and whisked off towards the kitchen, bellowing out an operatic aria in a surprisingly amazing voice.? Riley smiled, watching him for a moment and then turned back to David.? She reached across the table for his hand.
"Wow," he said, moving up beside her.? "That's quite a piece."? He glanced sidelong at her, wondering if she was just admiring the jewelry in general, or if the significance of it was affecting her, too.?
