After leaving the Red Dragon, David and Riley enjoyed a leisurely stroll.? She was snuggled against him, arm looped through his, head resting lightly on his shoulder as they walked. As they entered the Market District, Riley was doing a little window shopping as they passed by some of her favourite stores. Although he wasn't a big shopper himself, he made a mental note of which stores she seemed to linger on the longest, filing the information away for future present material. She lingered in front of a jewelry store for a moment, eyes caught by a platinum, sapphire, and diamond wedding set and an antique cameo on a bit of velvet ribbon.? She actually let go of David and moved up against the window when she spotted the cameo, a soft sigh escaping her throat.? "Look at that," she breathed.

"Wow," he said, moving up beside her.? "That's quite a piece."? He glanced sidelong at her, wondering if she was just admiring the jewelry in general, or if the significance of it was affecting her, too.? He was always extremely careful about bringing up relationship matters with her; she got panicked easily.

"Looks like something my grandmother had.? She left it to my cousin in her will, though."? She gave the wedding set another long, lingering glance but said nothing about it, before turning to take his hand and continue their walk to Carito's.? "I can't remember if you've ever told me about your grandparents."

"I never knew them," he said, stroking her wrist lightly with one finger.? "My parents left China when mom was pregnant with me, and we've never been back."

Riley glanced at him, a brow raised.? "And they never came to visit, either?"

He shook his head.? "It wasn't that easy to leave when I was younger...and they were too old to travel.? They passed away a few years back.? My dad went to their funeral service, but I couldn't get time off work, and mom didn't want to go back."

She made a thoughtful moue.? "Kinda sounds like what happened with my mother's parents.? They were not well pleased when she married a gaijin. I should say my grandmother was upset with Mama-san.? Grandfather was happy for her.? He really liked Daddy.? Even flew in from Kyoto when Daddy graduated from medical school when I was three."

"He ever convince your grandmother to accept it?"

She shook her head sadly.? "It got worse when I was born, being half Japanese and all.? Grandmother wouldn't accept it.? I met her exactly once, when I was 15, at Grandfather's funeral.? She refused to speak to me."

He reached up and stroked her shoulder softly.? "Her loss," he said seriously.? "People are f*cking stupid sometimes."

She caught his hand and pressed a kiss into the palm of it before asking, "How long have your parents been married?"

He smiled at the kiss, loving the feel of her extra-warm skin on his.? "Thirty-seven years," he said.? "They got married about three months before I was conceived."

"Wow," she said softly.? "My parents have been together for...I think 33 years.? Maybe 34."? She glanced aside at him.? "Is it bad that I can't remember exactly?"

He flashed her a quick grin.? "Nah, I wouldn't remember either if it wasn't pretty much exactly a year from their marriage to my birth."

"At least it wasn't a year after," she teased.? Then she sobered and her steps grew slower.? "Ever think about that?? Marriage, a family, staying together until you die?"

He snorted at the first bit.? "That would've caused big trouble for them back in China."? He nodded.? "Yeah, I've thought about it.? I had intended to propose to Charlotte, back in San Fran, if I'd gotten my shield."? He stopped, leaving unsaid the part she already knew well, how everything fell apart for him.? He felt a little surprise at the lack of pain or sadness the memory produced in him now.? Then he realized that it really wasn't that strange, considering he was happy now.

"That's what Andy and I decided to do - wait until I graduated from law school.? It would have been hard to be married to him before then, with me still in Boston and him in Pittsburgh."? She sighed unhappily.? "He...well, you know what he did.? It was a week before our wedding."? David's lack of apparent sadness brought a tiny smile to her face; she liked to think it was because he was happy now.

"Yeah," he said, nodding.? "Hell of a thing for him to do."? He didn't really have a lot of pity for people who took their own lives.? It was just a big cop out, if you asked him.? Worse, it always left a lot of unhappy people behind.? He paused for a second, then asked, with extreme casualness, "Ever thought about it again?"

"Rhys and I were engaged."? She didn't say much else until they were almost at Carito's.? "He never had the chance to get me a ring."

"I'm sorry."? He squeezed her hand and let the subject drop before they ended up having a depressed meal.?

"Me, too," she answered and stepped up to pull open the door to the restaurant.? Instantly they were assailed with the scents of tomatoes and mozzarella, garlic and basil, a heady wine.? The hostess smiled hugely when she spotted Riley and David and then immediately took them to their favourite table, the one with the best view of the small Romanesque fountain and its plantings.

He took a deep breath of the delicious smells that permeated the restaurant.? It made his stomach growl.? He waited for Riley to sit down before dropping into his own seat.? While he knew she'd be annoyed if he pulled the chair out for her, it still felt rude to sit down first.

She grinned at him.? "You're such a good boy," she said and glanced up at Mr Carito, the restaurant's owner himself, stopped by their table, bringing with him a basket of bread sticks, a saucer of piping-hot marinara and a bottle of house red.? "Signora Riley!? Signore David!? How lovely to see you again!" the huge man bellowed cheerfully at them.

"Bongiorno, Signore Carito," he answered, all but exhausting his knowledge of Italian.? "Good to see you, too."

Carito slapped David on the back, a chuckle of laughter as big as the man pouring out into the room.? "We have fish tonight, Signora Riley.? I think the Kitty likes fish?" he asked with a little twinkle of mirth in his eyes as he poured two glasses of wine for David and Riley and set the bottle down on the table.

She grinned.? "Yes, the Kitty likes fish very much.? What kind is it and how is it prepared?"? She picked up her wine and took a sip of it.? As always, Carito had picked out the perfect wine, rich, heady, and flavourful.

"It is Orata al Cartoccio, Signora Riley.? Sea bass with shrimp and clams and garlic and tomatoes, wrapped in paper and baked."

"That sounds great," he said, taking a sip of the wine as well.? Restaurants were about the only place he drank wine, unless a host offered it to him, but this stuff was really good.? "What do you think, la mei?"

"I think I want that," she said.? "And risotto and a salad?" she asked and glanced up at Carito.? He nodded and turned to David.? "The same, Signore David?"

"Yes, please."?

"Bueno.? Back soon," Carito said and whisked off towards the kitchen, bellowing out an operatic aria in a surprisingly amazing voice.? Riley smiled, watching him for a moment and then turned back to David.? She reached across the table for his hand.

He took her hand, grinning and shaking his head a bit at Carito's...presence.? "That guy should be on TV," he said.

"No kidding.? He'd totally give Batali a run for his money."? She sighed with extreme content, caramel gaze leaving David's face long enough to do a circuit of the room and then rest on him again.?

"Sure would."? He fell silent, watching her.? He could see how relaxed and happy she was, and it made him feel the same way.? His mind went back to the first few times they met, and a little grin curved his lips.

"What?" she said, spotting that smile.

"I was thinking about when I first got here," he said, "and first met you."

"And how we got on like gas and fire?"? She snorted and took a sip of the wine and grabbed a bread stick, ripping it neatly in half and dunking it into the sauce before taking a bite.

"Yeah," he answered, chuckling.? "We had our share of clashes." He snagged the other half of the bread stick and ate it.

She huffed.? "Bread stealer!"? Then she gave him a smirk and opened her mouth to say something, but her attention was suddenly caught by a woman who was crying and smiling at the same time.? Her boyfriend was kneeling next to her, holding a ring out to her.? Riley smiled softly and nodded towards the couple.? "Looks like someone just got engaged."

He turned to see where she was looking.? "He's doing it right, too.? Good for him."? He glanced surreptitiously at her to see how she was reacting to the sight. She was watching, a complicated look on her face - equal parts happiness and sadness.? She glanced back at David and caught him looking at her.? With a little duck of her head, she smiled self-consciously and tucked her hair over her ear.? "That's really romantic."

"Yeah.? This is a great place for a proposal."? He stifled a chuckle at her automatic grooming motion.? He was pretty well acquainted with the ways the Jaguar manifested its emotions by now.?

Luckily, she was saved further embarrassment by Mr Carito dropping off their food. He made a big show of unwrapping the fish from its paper wrapping.? It was displayed beautifully, nestled in amongst shell-on shrimp and clams still in their shells, fat, juicy Roma tomatoes, and springs of fresh rosemary and parsley.? "Bella, si?" the big man asked and the proceeded to serve the bass, cutting large portions first for Riley and then for David.

"It's great," he said, watching Carito serve the food.? "Almost too nice to eat."? He grinned.? "I think we can manage, though."

Carito laughed, poured them more wine and then disappeared back into the kitchen.? Riley inhaled deeply and then dug in, sampling bits of everything and moaning in culinary ecstasy.? "Sophia is a freaking genius in the kitchen," Riley commented around a big mouthful of tender, flaky fish.? "She's gotta be like a goddess or something."

He made a noise of agreement, unable to speak through the helping of fish he'd already shoveled in.? It tasted even better than it looked.? Eventually, he reluctantly swallowed the mouthful, and took another sip of the wine.? "Damn," he said appreciatively. Comfortable silence ensued as they dove into their meals.

After eating everything in sight and even cleaning the few remaining shrimp nubs out of their tails, Riley sighed deeply and pushed her plate away.? "Wow," she said breathlessly.? "That was...amazing."

"It was good for me, too, baby," he said, grinning.? He remembered her comparison of food to sex.

She cracked a grin at that and prodded his shin gently with the toe of her shoe.? "Behave.? We're in public."

"I'll try.? Dessert?"

"Tiramisu?"

"Yup."? He lifted a hand, calling a waiter over to order tiramisu for two. The tiramisu - plus tiny demitasse cups of espresso - appeared at their table a few moments later, and Riley was silent again as she applied herself with single-mindedness to her cake. He didn't eat his for a moment, instead watching her.? He always enjoyed seeing her eat, how intent she was, and how much she loved it.? After a bit, he started in on his own cake.? It was just as good as he'd expected it to be.

"Ugh.? I think I may explode."? Her plate was clean and now she was sipping the strong, bitter coffee.

"My stomach is very happy now."

"Mine, too."? She sat back in her seat and sighed.? After a short silence, she cocked her head to the side and studied him for a moment before saying, "When Danny and I first got together, I asked him his feelings about marriage."

"You did?? He's never mentioned it."

She shrugged and played with the tiny cup and its saucer.? "He said only if I wanted to." He nodded, waiting to see if she'd say more. After a pause, she continued, "I guess it's like what he said about you and I - monogamy isn't in the nature of a Cat and he's more cat than he is human."

"You think he's not interested in marriage?"

She shook her head.? "He'd do it if I wanted it, but not because he wanted it.? He's happy the way things are now."? She sipped her coffee, very carefully keeping her voice and her expression neutral.

He knew, though.? "Are you?"

"I'm happy, yes.? I love you both very much."? Again her face, her voice, her body were all held in very careful arrangement so as not to give anything away.

He leaned forward just a bit.? "Is that all?" he asked softly.

She frowned and set the coffee cup down on the table in front of her.? "Is what all?? Isn't that enough?"

"When your voice and face get all neutral like that, it means there's something you don't want to say."? It wasn't exactly an answer.

"David," she started and then shook her head.? "I'm happy.? I love you both," she said again.

He nodded, letting it go.? "I'm happy, too," he said.

"Good."? She reached for his wrist, turning it gently so she could see the face of his watch.? "Crap.? It's late."? And it was nearly 11:30.? "Danny's gonna wonder what happened to us."? She looked around for Carito or a waiter to get the check, even though she knew that they would likely be shoved out the door and told their money wasn't any good there.

"Yeah, we'd better go."? He stood, deciding that the best thing to do was just leave some money at the table.? Then Carito couldn't refuse it.

She chuckled at his tactics and took his hand.? "Good thinking," she said and steered them for the door, trying to sneak out before they could be stopped and forcefully given their money back.? The night was cool and overcast and for a moment, Riley missed having a jacket or a sweater. She had a David, though.? He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close against him as they started the walk home.? There was something nice about walking at night.? He'd always been a fan of it, and the recent bout of sleeplessness had only enhanced it.

She was silent as they walked, her thoughts far away in the past, occasionally daring to dart ahead into the future.? Would they become a unique family like AAA?? Would she soon be Riley Tej-Lo?? Would they adopt children??

Perhaps unsurprisingly, his own thoughts were very similar.? He had a feeling about the look he'd seen in Riley's face when she watched the proposal, and when she looked at the wedding set.? It seemed to him that she was very subtly hinting that she wanted more than just a couple of boyfriends.? He wondered, though, how she would react if he ever brought the subject up.? It couldn't get much touchier than marriage, really, when it came to touchy relationship material.

As they passed by a dress shop just at the edge of the Marketplace, Riley halted dead in her tracks and looked up into the window display.? There, on a mannequin with perfectly coifed blonde hair and a lacy veil, was a dress of ivory taffeta.? It was strapless, the bodice tight and fitted, the waist asymmetrical, the skirt long and slit to knee-length on the right side.? The breath caught in Riley's throat and she dropped David's hand without thought. He stopped a second after she did, turning to see what had caught her attention.? It was a wedding dress.? Three times in one night, now.? Was fate trying to tell them something?

"When I was a little girl, I'd beg Mama-san to let me borrow her best lace tablecloth," Riley's voice was soft and firmly seated in the past.? "I'd take it up to my room and make Archie, our dog, be my maid of honour.? I had the whole thing planned out by the time I was twelve.? It'd be in October and my colours would be burgundy and gold.? It'd be outside, under the trees, in the late morning."

He rested one hand lightly on her back, listening.? He smiled at the image of her as a child, planning out her perfect wedding.? Every girl he'd known had done that at one time or another.

"Andy's mother pushed us into a June wedding, in their church in Toronto.? The colours we picked out were purple and silver, instead of burgundy and gold.? But my dress was the one I'd wanted forever.? Nothing like this one.? This one is so...chic and elegant."? She turned away and took a deep breath, squaring her shoulders and walking towards the bridge once more.

"You'd look beautiful in it, Riley," he said, with complete sincerity.? He could already see her wearing it in his mind, and it was almost enough to bring tears to his eyes.? In a good way.

She gave him a soft smile and cast a final, longing look over her shoulder at the dress before turning around to face WestEnd and putting the notion of marriage and weddings firmly out of her mind.

He didn't say anything as they crossed over the bridge and were well into WestEnd.? When he did speak, it was soft and carefully neutral.? "Dinner was really nice tonight.? We don't get to do that much."

"It was very nice," she agreed and then stopped, looking at him sidelong out of the corner of her eye.? "That couple in there...? Do you have the same opinion of marriage as Daniel does?"

He paused in mid-step, and looked over at her, then away.? "I'm all human," he said obliquely.? In his head, he saw a sudden flash of an image; he and Riley at the altar, with her in that dress.? It sent a warm flush through his body, seeing that image.?

She made a sour face.? "I'm the one who excels at non-answers, not you," she reminded him and turned to face him.

Now he looked up into her eyes.? "No," he said softly, "I don't share his opinion."

She nodded and then said in a voice barely above a whisper, "Neither do I."? Then she turned and crossed through the gate between the Central District and WestEnd.? The Gardens were now only a few blocks away.

He didn't say anything else, but he took her hand again, walking with her as they drew close to home.? Part of him wanted to come out and ask her directly if she was hinting at wanting to get married, but he knew she'd never answer a question like that.

She moved quietly through the ground floor, automatically checking to see if there was anyone left in any of the businesses.? All the lights were turned off and the doors firmly shut.? Then she headed up the stairs and went into 2A, sniffing to see where Danny was.

He paused in the doorway to the loft, and glanced up the stairs.? "I've been monopolizing you lately," he said.? "I should let you and Dan have some time alone."

"You sure?"? She paused in the doorway and turned to face him, nostrils flaring to take a bead on his mood.

He nodded, then stepped into her, kissing her lips softly.? "I'm sure."? He smiled at her.

She returned his kiss and hugged him tightly.? "Thanks for dinner.? I'll see you after class in the morning?"

"You bet," he answered, squeezing her close.? "We've got more lessons to work on."

"And a floor to tile, too."? She cupped his cheek and then headed back inside, quietly shutting the door once he was headed up the stairs to 3B.

Daniel was sitting on the couch, watching television when Riley came in.? He looked up from the TV and smiled at her.? "Hello, sundari," he said.? His gaze flicked past her for a moment, noting the lack of David.

"He said he's been monopolising me and gave us the night off."? She gave him a little smirk and headed to her Closet of Holding, stepping inside and shedding her clothing in exchange for something more comfortable.

He rose from the couch and walked into the bedroom area with her.? "Very kind of him," he said, chuckling.? "Did you have a good dinner?? I smell Carito's."

She reemerged from the closet, wearing a light cotton chemise in a turquoise blue print with multi-coloured lotuses and chrysanthemums.? She tied closed the belt on the matching robe and nodded.? "We had baked sea bass and tiramisu.? It was really good."

He sat down on the edge of the bed and studied her.? "Something's bothering you," he said.? It wasn't a question.? "Want to talk about it?"

She sighed deeply and reached for the hair brush on the dresser and then sat next to him, giving her hair its nightly hundred strokes.? "We saw a guy propose tonight."

"At the restaurant?"

"Yeah.? Down on one knee, candlelight, ring in his pocket, the whole nine yards."? She sighed and flipped her hair over her shoulder, a curtain of sun-kissed sable between them now.? "It was wicked romantic."

He tilted his head, watching her closely.? "Sundari, are you saying that you want to get married?"

"I almost did, you know.? Twice," she said by way of a patented O'Rourke Non-Answer.

"Yes, I know.? I was speaking more in the present tense, however."? He didn't think he had misjudged the reason for her current mood, despite what she said.

She shook her hair back and began braiding it, pulling the tail over her shoulder when it got too long to continue with it behind her.? "Yes, I think I would like to get married at some point in the future.? Maybe adopt a baby, too."? Her voice was very soft, very hesitant and she refused to make eye contact with him.? Everything about her screamed vulnerable and scared.

He reached out, running his hand down her arm slowly.? "You know I would marry you if that was what you wanted," he said quietly.?

She stood suddenly and put the brush back on top of the dresser and turned to face him, her arms crossed loosely over her chest.? "Yeah, if that's what I wanted, not if that's what we wanted.? Do you know how unromantic that is as a proposal?? 'Hey, baby, if you think we should be married, well then, let's make it so!'? No, thank you."? She took a deep breath and shoved aside the sudden flare of anger.? "I want you to want to marry me, Daniel.? I want you to want to spend the rest of your life with me, raising kids and growing old."

He drew back slightly from her sudden anger, narrowing his eyes in surprise and a little annoyance.? "I'm sorry," he said.? "I realize that might not have come out well.? You know the idea of marriage isn't a natural one to me.? That doesn't mean I don't love you.? I do love you.? I do want to be with you."

She softened in the face of his annoyance.? "I'm sorry for barking at you, Danny."? She went and sat next to him once more.? "I'm human, well, mostly human.? I want what most humans want.? A husband, kids, grandchildren, a white picket fence and two dogs.? I feel like I should apologise for not being able to get past that."

He reached out and took one of her hands in both of his, holding them against his chest.? "No, no...it isn't your fault.? It's only natural for you to want what humans want.? It's me who should get past it."

She shook her head and then leaned against him.? "No, Danny.? You shouldn't.? You can't help the way you feel anymore than I can help the way I feel.? You're not human enough and I'm not cat enough."

"Have you spoken to David about this?" he asked, rubbing his cheek against her shoulder.

She took a deep breath and nodded.? "Sorta." He tipped his head to look up at her, waiting for her to elaborate. "I saw a wedding set - you know, an engagement and the wedding band - in that little antique jewelry shop and then as we were coming home from Carito's, I saw a gown.? He'd have to be dumber than a box of hair not to pick up on it.? He feels the same way as I do, Danny.? He was going to ask his girlfriend in San Francisco when he made Detective."

"I see," he said very softly.

She kissed him very gently, simultaneously changing the subject away from something that made her highly uncomfortable while at the same time exploring the level of interest in pursuing something more than kissing. He responded immediately, pressing his lips against hers a little more firmly.? No matter what he was thinking at the moment, it wasn't enough to stop him from loving her touch. She climbed into his lap, one knee on either side of his hips and gently guided him down to the bed, not breaking the kiss as they moved together.

His fingertips dug into the muscles of her back when she pushed him back.? A soft growl escaped his throat, and he nipped gently at her lip. She sat up just enough to untie the robe and let it slide off her shoulders and pool on the floor next to the bed.? Then she skinned off the chemise and dropped it to the floor as well, leaving her naked, her skin like glowing honey in the dim light of the loft.

Hours later, she opened her eyes and smiled at him, her skin still flushed with blood and heat and desire.? Wriggling a little, she managed to get comfortable curled in the foetal position, she sighed heavily, a smile like the Cat who'd just gotten the cream spreading over her full lips.? "Mmmmm..." she moaned and stretched luxuriously.

His eyes were half-closed, the perfect picture of feline contentment as he watched her stretch.? He couldn't resist reaching out to lay a hand on her flank, stroking the smooth skin there softly. She jumped and the muscles underneath his hand jerked like a fly-bitten horse.? She lazily shoved his hand away.? "Tickles," she said in a content, breathless voice.

A lazy smile spread across his lips as he pulled his hand away, propping his head up on one hand to watch her. She gave him a slightly shy smile and then rolled onto her back, looking up at the ceiling.? "That was nice," she said at length.

"I though I was the one with the gift for understatement," he said, chuckling softly.

She grinned and then slid off the bed, padding naked and barefoot through the loft to the bathroom.? A moment later, the sound of the shower running could be heard. When she was finished, she got out and dried off.? "I'm gonna make some tea, I think.? Want some?" she called out from the bathroom.

"Thank you, sundari," he said and laughing, "I'm English.? Of course I want some tea."

"I was thinking about girlie tea, you know like chamomile with some honey.? Not that strong stuff you lot drink."

He chuckled.? "I'm not that particular, really.? Chamomile sounds lovely."

"Deal."? After hanging up her towel, she went out into the kitchen, still naked and surprisingly unconcerned about it.? A few short months ago, she would have covered up immediately, but after spending so much time in the company of another Lycanthrope, she'd grown accustomed to being naked.

He, of course, felt just as comfortable naked as clothed.? Sometimes more so.? Clothes had a tendency to rip and shred annoyingly when one moved too fast.? He followed her into the kitchen and leaned up against the counter.

As she waited for the water to boil, she opened the fridge and stared into it, hoping that something would leap up and grab her attention.

"Hungry?" he asked facetiously, knowing full well she always was.

"Peckish," she answered and reached in for an Asian pear.? She bit into it and sighed happily at the sweet, juicy taste.? "You know what?" she said around a mouthful.

"What's that?"

"We need to invent a meat tree."

He blinked in surprise.? "A...meat tree?"

She grinned and chuckled.? "Well, yeah.? Stay with me here."? She leaned against the counter, stretching her legs out and crossing them at the ankles while she talked and ate her pear.? "See, fruit comes from trees and you can just go to the tree and pick off a pear or an apple or whatever."

"Right," he said, then he caught on to what she was saying.? "Ah, I see.? You want a tree we can pick meat off of," he finished, laughing.

"Yes!? Exactly.? I could just go and pick some beef jerky off of it, or like a whole salami or something, you know?"? The kettle began its shrill whistle and she handed him her half-eaten pear to hold as she made their tea.

"That would be brilliant," he said, contemplating the image in his mind's eye.? "I wonder if we can find a mage to create one?"

"Ooh.? That would be wicked cool."? She added huge dollops of honey to both mugs and then exchanged a mug of tea for her pear and took her little snack into the living area and flopped down on the couch. He took a sip of the steaming tea and went out to the living room, sitting down next to her.?

"Have you been out to Twin Oaks lately?? Like within the last week or so?"

"I was out there a couple days ago, yes.? How come?"

"The yard's done and David's finished the upstairs bathroom.? We just need to tile the floor and do the counters."

"It's starting to look wonderful, isn't it?"

"It really, really is."? She finished off her pear and then fell silent as she sipped her tea.? She was picturing the house when it was done, with Danny outdoor kitchen on the big patio in the back garden, next to the pond and her piano and maybe a barre in the music room upstairs.? Maybe they could convert David's bedroom into a nursery, too, at some point in the future.

He smiled again, watching her.? It was nice to see her so happy about the house.? Then his smile slipped just a bit, for an instant, as he thought of her earlier admission of wanting marriage, a 'normal' life.? The house was a nice start, but normality was something that might never belong to them, as things were.

She caught that shift in his mood and gave him a concerned look.? "What is it?" she asked and leaned down to put the mug of tea on the floor near her feet.

He shook his head dismissing the thought for the moment.? "Another time," he said.? "It's late, and we should get to bed."

She wanted to protest, wanted to force him to sit there and talk to her, but knew it would only lead to a fight.? And after the glorious f*cking she'd just gotten, she wasn't about to cause an argument and ruin her afterglow.? So she nodded and stood up, leaning down to pick up her tea and take it to the kitchen, leaving it in the sink to wash in the morning. Then she went to the front door, making sure it was locked and then turned the lights off.? Moving around the loft, she checked each window and the door to the patio to make sure they, too, were locked before sliding into bed.? It felt weird for there to be only two bodies in it, instead of the normal three.

In bed, he pressed up against her, purring softly, and slipped his arm around her.? He let out a soft sigh of contentment. She echoed his sigh and snuggled against him, his purr answered by her own deep, subsonic rumble.? "Love you, Danny," she whispered as she hovered on the edge of sleep.

"I love you, Riley," he whispered back, not even sure if she was still awake to hear it.? Soon after, though, he fell asleep himself.

One of the benefits of running a busy cafe was that while you were at work, it was easy to avoid thinking about things you didn't really want to think about.? This held just as true for a Cat as it did a human.? Daniel found that every time there was a break during the day, he found himself sitting or standing there, staring at nothing, and thinking about his conversation with Riley the night before.? While she hadn't come right out and said it ? and never would, he knew ? he could definitely tell that not only was she interested in being married, but that his attitude towards it was bothering her.

Problem was, he couldn't help feeling the way he did.? Though he'd been exposed to human ways since his teenage years, there was a large, essential part of him that wasn't human, could never be human.? He was already bucking his feline nature by staying with Riley and being monogamous to her, and while he really didn't foresee a time when he'd want to go off and be with someone else, the idea that he would essentially be forced into a permanent arrangement made the Leopard uneasy.

It bothered him, though, that it seemed like he wasn't able to give her what she really wanted.? He loved her, wanted her to be happy.? Yet he couldn't make her truly happy by wanting to marry her.? Being willing to do it wasn't enough; she would feel guilty about that, thinking that he was only doing it for her.?

What's more, when he'd spoken to David at lunch time, Daniel had brought up the subject in the form of mentioning that Riley had told him about the proposal they'd seen.? While he had no doubts about David's love for Riley, he wanted to hear about his feelings on marriage.? It hadn't taken him very long to establish that David was definitely interested in getting married again one day, with a strong indication that he would prefer it to be Riley. It was almost cute how David had danced around that subject, clearly trying to avoid making him jealous.

After that, though, Daniel found himself thinking hard about their situation.? He had more than suspicion that he was actually hurting Riley's ? and by extension, David's ? happiness by letting the situation go on as it was currently.? Maybe it would be better if he stepped out of the way, let them be together alone.? It would hurt to do that, but it would hurt a lot more if he was right about holding her back.?

When it came time to close up the Cafe, he did so almost in a daze, hardly paying attention to what he was doing.? When he finished, he went up to their loft.? He found Riley there, sitting on the couch, reading a book, with music playing.? It was bluesy kind of music, Stevie Ray Vaughn, he thought. That selection was usually a sign that something was making her pensive.? He had an idea what it was.

Riley glanced up when Danny came into the Loft...and was bludgeoned with the agonising scent of his worry, frustration, and sadness.? She stood and set the book aside without remembering to mark her place - honestly, she'd even forgotten the name of it at this point - and went to his side, folding him into a fierce hug.? It just seemed to her that he needed one.

Daniel wrapped his arms around her and squeezed her almost uncomfortably hard, burying his face in her hair.? She smelled of sadness, concern, and some fear.? It made his heart break, knowing that what he had to tell her was going to make it all worse, at least in the short term.

"What is it, Danny?? You're scaring me," she whispered against his ear and then leaned back to look into his eyes, searching his face for any hint of what had him so upset.

He looked into those caramel eyes and steeled himself for what he knew he had to say.? "Sit down, sundari," he said.? "We have to talk."

She went cold and it felt as though her chest was caught in a vise grip.? She nodded dumbly and went to perch on the edge of the couch where she'd been sitting when he'd come home.? This was like a nightmare - she knew what was coming, she'd heard the talk a million times in her dreams.? Her mouth was suddenly dry and she had to clasp her hands together to keep them from shaking.

The sudden wave of fear and sadness that rolled off of her hit him like a sledgehammer to the chest.? What was he thinking?? How could he do this to her?? He almost lost his nerve right then, something that had never once happened to him before.? He almost turned away, almost said he wanted to marry her, just to stop that flood of emotions from streaming out of her.?

He closed his eyes, and took a deep breath.? He couldn't stop now, or he'd hurt her a thousand times worse in the future.? "I've been thinking all day long about our talk last night," he said, reaching out to take her clasped hands in his own.? "It's become clear to me that I can't give you what you deserve.? As much as I love you, I can't give you the normal life, the marriage, the children, that you want and that you should be able to have." The words poured out of him in one big rush, as he hurried to finish them before he lost his will to continue.? "I would spend the rest of my life with you if it would make you happy, but we both know that you would feel as though I were only doing it to please you, with no thought for myself.? Maybe that would even be partially true.?

?Regardless, it would affect us, our relationship.? We would always be wondering if something was missing, and something would be.? Not love, because I do love you, Riley.? Humanity, maybe.? All this time I've spent with you, I've been teaching you to accept the Cat, but maybe I should have been learning how to be more human."?

He took another deep breath, sighed it out.? "When I look at you and David, I see the love that's grown there, and I see the possibility for both of you to have what you want, what you deserve.? But only if I'm gone.? The three of us may be happy together, but this won't fulfill your dreams and desires.? I'm holding you back from those by being here."? The flood of words trickled to a halt, and his body sagged, as if all the energy had gone out of him.

Riley's eyes filled with tears but she didn't say anything, even when they spilled over.? She'd long since learned to cry silently; there was less danger in it.? She tried to take a deep breath, tried to formulate coherent thoughts, tried to do something other than just sit there with hot tears streaking down her face.? She made some wordless noise of protest and shook her head.? Then the walls came tumbling down and she bent forward at the waist, the breath leaving her body in a sudden explosion of high-pitched keening.? She felt sick to her stomach; her head was a swirling mass of pain and confusion.? She covered her face with her hands and sobbed.

"Oh, sundari," he said softly, putting his arms around her and hugging her close to him.? "I'm so sorry."? His vision swam as tears well up in his own eyes.? "I'm so sorry,"? he said again.?

She shook her head again, clinging to him fiercely, denying his words, denying the truth that she knew was in those words.? "No, Danny.? No...you can't...? No," she repeated the word over and over as if it could erase his words, could erase the veracity of it.? But ultimately, and to her utter horror, she knew he was right.

"Shh," he whispered.? "Shh.? I would do anything for you, my love.? I would stay if I weren't sure it would hurt you more in the end.? You know I'm right.? The best way I can show you how much I love you is to clear the way for you to be truly happy."? He stroked her hair softly, over and over as he spoke, trying to blink away his tears.? It didn't work, though, and they quietly spilled over.

"I did this, Danny.? I wanted him.? I'm selfish.? I can tell him to go, Danny.? Stay, please.? Don't leave me.? Please."? The words waterfalled from her mouth in a rush of feelings, of desperation.? She pulled back, looked into his eyes, her own wide and filled with tears that continued to streak down her face to drop from her chin and leave dark splotches on her shirt.

He shook his head firmly, holding her shoulders gently.? "I have to.? I can't let you give up your chance at real happiness.? He loves you, as much as I do."

Daniel was right, of course.? Her talk with David last night, even if it was an intricately choreographed dance around the subject, had given her insight into David's feelings for her.? Yes, he'd told her on several different occasions now that he loved her, and she had discovered that she returned the feelings just as strongly, it was still kind of a shock to learn that what had begun as a purely physical relationship had somehow morphed to the state it was in now.? She let go of her Leopard and stood shakily, wrapping her arms around her stomach to stem the tide of nausea that threatened.? "What will you do?? Where will you go?? The house, Danny...? the Cafe."? She was grasping at straws, trying to think of ways to make him stay, to keep him with her.

"I'll go back to Oxford, spend some time with my parents.? They're getting old.? You and David can live in the house.? The Cafe...give it to Anisha, or rent it out."? He looked away, out the window, down at the floor, anywhere but at the pain on her face.?

"But...but what about me?"? Her voice was so tiny, so thick with tears.

"You'll have David, and a chance at the happiness you've always dreamed of."

"Please, Danny, don't.? Please.? I need you.? I need you.? I love you."? The sobs started anew and she sunk slowly to the floor, curling up in a miserable heap as the strength left her legs.

"I love you, Riley.? That's why I must do this.? I'm so sorry, sundari.? One day, I hope, when you've found your happiness, you'll be able to forgive me."? He crouched, kissed the top of her head softly, then stood and went quickly to the door and out before she could beg him to stay again, because he knew he would give in if she did.

She was nominally aware of the door closing and the complete absence of her Leopard's scent in the loft, but they were too deeply buried under her own grief, her own guilt.? If she'd never given in and slept with David, if she'd never fallen in love with him, she'd still have Daniel.? Hell, if she could more readily accept the thinking of her Cat, she wouldn't want so desperately to be married and have a family, she wouldn't yearn for all the trappings of humanity the way she did.

On the way out of the Gardens, Daniel saw the familiar figure of David returning from his work on the new house.? He drew close to him, clasped his shoulder firmly, and said quietly.? "Goodbye, David.? My brother.? Go see Riley, she needs you now."? Then he turned away and Shifted so quickly it seemed as though his clothes just exploded.? He ran off, so fast and quietly that not even someone like David could follow him.? A moment later, the wail of a Leopard rang through the night air of WestEnd.? Then all was silent again.

David flashed a smile when he saw Daniel approach, but the smile faded when he saw the expression on Daniel's face.? Before he could ask what was wrong, Daniel said goodbye to him, and told him to go see Riley.? Then Daniel was gone, shifting into Leopard form and running off.?

"The f*ck just happened?" David said, turning to look at the Gardens.? From here, it looked normal and peaceful.? Something had obviously just happened.? He ran towards the doors, hesitating when he heard the scream of a big cat, then going through the doors quickly and up to the loft.? He burst through the door hard enough to bend a hinge, and saw Riley curled up on the floor, crying.? "Sh*t", he said, falling to his knees next to her and gathering her in his arms.? "What's wrong?? What happened, Riley?"

She vaulted from her crouch on the floor, hurtling into his arms with a fierceness that frightened her.? She held him tightly in an embrace that would certainly have cracked the ribs of anyone other than David.? "He's gone," she sobbed and buried her face in his shoulders, sobs wracking her slight shoulders, the tears flowing freely, soaking his shirt.

His ribs creaked under the force of her grip, but he didn't even notice.? He knew immediately she meant Dan; it could only be him, after what had happened outside.? He held her tightly, stroking her back softly.? "Let it out," he said softly, "I'm here for you."? There wasn't any point in trying to find out what had happened, yet, she needed to cry it out first.? Once again, his years as a cop came in handy.? He knew how to help hysterical victims, and this wasn't so different.

Her sobs slowly stilled, the tears stopped flowing, and she was left with that annoying hic-coughing thing that always lingered after such hard crying.? She took a deep breath, growling in frustration at her inability to stop them.? She disentangled herself from David's arms, instead taking his hand, and drew him into the kitchen, where she proceeded to get a bottle of water from the fridge and sip it in the hopes that the stupid hic-coughs would die.

He didn't protest or resist when she pulled him to the kitchen.? He also didn't ask the typically stupid question that people asked at times like this, 'Are you okay?'? That was just dumb, of course she wasn't okay.? Okay people didn't lie on the floor crying their eyes out.? Instead, he held her hand as she drank, waiting for her to talk in her own time.

She finished the water and took a deep breath, absurdly pleased at the complete lack of hic-coughs.? "He left, David.? He...he's gone."? Her voice was soft, barely above a whisper, and her eyes flooded with tears again.

"Why?" he asked simply.? As hard as it was working, his brain couldn't come up with any possible reason Dan would leave her, he loved her so much.? It didn't make any sense.?

She looked at him in abject misery and said in a thready voice, "Because I'm human and because he's a Cat."? While that didn't exactly answer his question, it reduced the issue to its barest bones.

He waited until she put the water down, then hugged her again, pulling her tightly to him.? "Christ," he said, still not understanding, but wanting to comfort her however he could.? "I'm sorry, Riley.? Really sorry."

She shook her head and withdrew from him into herself by turning away and moving aimlessly around the loft, picking things up without looking at them before putting them back down.? "Why couldn't I just be f*cking happy with him?? Why couldn't I just...be happy with what I have?? Why do I always f*ck everything up?"

"It's not your fault," he said moving so he could keep her in sight.? He didn't crowd her, just stayed near.? "If he left, it's because he chose to.? I don't understand why, but I know that much."

She frowned severely at him.? "How is it not my fault, David?? I drove him off.? I wasn't satisfied with him.? I had to have you.? Then I wasn't satisfied with you both.? I had to have a piece of f*cking paper and a god damned ring on my f*cking finger."? She snorted angrily and picked up a piece of a geode she'd discovered in the Sonoran desert and flung it at the wall.? It shattered, falling to the floor in a thousand brilliantly faceted pieces and leaving a dent in the wall, too.? "As if either of those things prove something.? As if having neither of those things prove that he didn't love me."

"The heart wants what the heart wants, Riley.? It's not fair to deny yours.? Talk to me.? What happened?"

She took a deep breath, closing her eyes and sought her splintered Centre.? With her eyes still firmly closed, her hands fisted tightly at her sides the only indication of her mood, she said, "He told me that he couldn't give me what I need, what I want.? He said that he's standing between us, that you and I have a chance at happiness together and that if he stayed, he'd only be hurting us all in the end."

That shocked him into silence.? He could have guessed for a thousand years without coming up with that answer.? "I...," he started.? "Sh*t."? He had nothing.? A flash of pain went through him.? It was his fault, wasn't it?? Not hers, his.? He was the intruder, the one who pushed himself into their lives.

She growled softly, the sort of growl that ancient human ancestors heard and shrieked in fear.? "Don't," she said, her voice rough, inhuman.? She smelled his guilt and she Would Not Have It.

He froze at the growl, watching her very carefully.? He didn't think she would try to hurt him, but in this state, there was no telling.? He was silent for a minute, drawing on the iron will that he'd spent his whole life developing.? She was right, this wasn't the time for assigning blame.? He was looking at it the wrong way.? Dan had done this for them, out of love for them.? Taking the blame would be denying Dan's sacrifice.? As he thought that, he realized suddenly that no one had ever done something like that for him before.? Balance returned, and he spoke.? "There's no fault here.? He did what he thought was right, because of love."

Her eyes flooded with tears again and she slowly sank to the floor, her back braced against the wall, knees pulled up under her chin.? She nodded at length, but remained silent.? She couldn't think of anything to say, beyond the continuing urge to berate herself, to blame herself, to beg David to find Danny and bring him home.

He sat down next to her, shifting so he was facing her and reached out, gathering her into another hug.? He kissed her temple softly, then rested his forehead against it.? He remembered what it felt like when Charlotte had left him, and tried to think of something to say that would save Riley this pain she was feeling.

She unfolded enough that she could climb into his lap and let him hold her cuddled against him.? She closed her eyes and listened intently to the steady beat of his heart, filled her nose with the warm, comforting scent of his skin - sunshine, water from the river and the pond, sawdust, spackle, and underneath it all, just him.? She took a deep, staggered breath, and tried to relax.? "You're not going to leave, are you?" she asked him a terribly vulnerable voice.

"What?? God, no," he said, shocked.? "I love you, Riley."

"He said the same thing.? And he's gone."

"I'm not going anywhere," he said firmly.? "I know what I want, and it's you."

She nodded, subsiding into silence once more, not entirely certain, however, that she believed him.? Everyone left her eventually - Pippa, Andy, Deacon, Rhys, Danny...? It was only a matter of time before David's name was added to that list.

"I won't leave," he said again, petting her back in long, slow strokes.

She licked her lips and opened her eyes at last, tilting her head up and looking at him.? She knew she looked awful - bloodshot eyes, splotchy cheeks, the tip of her nose red as a firebrand.? She gave him a forced half smile and said, "It's times like this that I wish to Christ I could get sh*t-faced."

He cocked his head at her, curious despite the situation.? "Not at all?"

"Well, if I drink faster than I metabolise the alcohol, sure.? But it's expensive."

"Who cares about expensive?? You deserve to get blasted if you want to."? He flashed a quick grin at her.

She chuckled softly.? "Wanna go find a seedy bar, get sh*t-faced and pick a fight?"

"Hell yeah.? I think we could both stand to work off some emotion right now.? It's either that or get sh*tfaced and f*ck like rabbits."

She slid off his lap and reached down to take his hands.? "I have a better idea.? Take me to the range.? Let me try out the big guns.? Maybe that .50 caliber?"

He took her hands and stood, the grin coming without effort now.? "Damn, now that's hot.? I knew there was a reason I liked you so much."

That drew a quicksilver, startled but genuine laugh from her.? "Then maybe you'll let me beat you up?"

He winked at her.? "Maybe.? I'll make you work for it, though."

"Good.? I need it.? Lemme change my clothes real fast and then you can show me a good time, big boy."

"You're on, babe."
