As they left the Inn, hopefully leaving behind all the nasty feelings caused by the latest altercation with the Secret Society of Super Villains, Riley glanced sidelong at Daniel.? She studied him quietly for a moment and then said, "We should have an official first date."

He raised a brow. "An 'official' one?? Was there an unofficial one I missed?"

"You mean you didn't get the memo?"? She grinned.? "No, I mean...? If we're gonna date, then we should, you know...go on one.? So we have a point of reference for our dating time line."

"Ah, I see," he replied.? "Well, points of reference are very important, so I agree, of course.? Did you have something in mind?"

She nodded.? "Dinner and a movie.? Or maybe a movie and dinner.? Or a movie and coffee.? Or a snack whilst seeing a movie."

"A movie, with some sort of consumption occurring." He grinned.? There was probably some double entendre in that one.

A sable brow arched at that, though she didn't deign to respond.? "There's a big film festival out at Star's End all this month.? We could make a regular thing of movie and consumption...you know, if the first one turns out well."

"I never watched many movies when I was learning to be human...just some old ones my parents found to help me get used to speech.? It's been said to me that I should remedy that lack. I would be thrilled to do so with you." He nodded, determined to ensure that it did indeed 'turn out well'.

"Cool.? Serpico's showing tonight.? I've never seen it but it's a classic.? Pacino was nominated for an Oscar.? C'mon."? She gently tugged on his shirt, turning her steps towards the shuttle that would take them out to the Spaceport.

"Lead on," he said, following her.? He'd never been to this part of the city before.

The streets of the Spaceport reminded Riley of Star Wars meets Las Vegas.? There were ocean-going vessels, space ships, people and creatures of every conceivable appearance and almost every street corner was populated by a bar or a tavern or even just a hole-in-the-wall dive.? She nodded to the Stars End Bar and Grill as they passed it on their way to the Googolplex, "That's the place that reminds me of Mos Eisley Cantina.? You know?? From the first Star Wars movie?"

He nodded. "I have seen that one," he said dryly. He saw what she meant, though.? The Spaceport really did look like it came straight of the movies.

They soon arrived in front of the Googolplex and stood staring up at the LED-lit marquee.? "Ooh, there's gonna be some killer movies this month," she said as titles scrolled past.

The movies listed there were unfamiliar to him, with a few exceptions. "I can see I have a lot of catching up to do."

She gave him a little lop-sided smile.? "I can remedy that."? She moved up to the counter and bought their tickets, before going to the door and pulling it open for him.? "Popcorn?? A Coke or something?"

"What are you having?"

"Probably some popcorn.? Can't watch a movie in a theatre without it.? It's against the law or something."

"Far be it for me to break the law. I'll have popcorn, too.? Or should we just share one?"

"Yeah.? Sharing is caring, you know," she quipped.? Then a large, colourful display of enormous boxes of candy caught her eye.? She made a beeline straight for it.?

He laughed, following her to the candy display. "A Kitty with a sweet tooth?"

She gave him a sheepish smile.? "A Kitty with an obsession with all things gummi, actually."? She reached out and grabbed an over-sized box of gummi worms.? "I'll share, but only one of each colour."

"I'm honored," he said with dry wit.

She stuck her tongue out at him before buying their snacks, adding a large cup of blue raspberry Icee at the last moment.? "Okay.? Candy, popcorn, Icee.? We're set."

"After you," he replied, sweeping his arm in a grand gesture toward the theatre.

They entered the theatre and Riley was pleased to see that it was theatre-style seating.? She paused at the bottom of the stairs and looked up.? "Middle?? Back?"

"If I were to guess, I would say you prefer the back," he said, knowing how she disliked feeling exposed. "Correct?"

"Wow," she said with a smirk.? "So short into the relationship and already all of my secrets are exposed?"?

"Mm...not all," he said, with a bit of a roguish grin.

"That's reassuring."? She started up the stairs, glancing occasionally at those already seated.? She didn't see anyone she recognised and couldn't decide if this was a good thing or not.

He slipped silently up the steps next to her, sniffing the air now and then.? At the seats, he reached out to relieve her of some of her junk-food burden so she could sit. She handed him the popcorn box, set the Icee in the cup holder, and clutching the gummis protectively to her chest, slid into the perfect seat - half-way across the row in the dead centre of the huge screen. He settled into the seat next to hers, rested the popcorn in his lap and slipped one arm around her shoulders.

She leaned lightly against him and carefully opened the box of gummi worms.? Her sensitive nose caught the mouth-watering scent of gelatin, artificial colouring, high fructose corn syrup, and fake fruit flavors and she swallowed reflexively.? She carefully put two fingers into the box and extracted a single worm, a half-red-half-yellow one - not her favourites.? She studied it carefully, deciding which was its face.? Luckily, these worms had smiling faces so it was easier to tell which end to eat first.? She bit the gummi neatly in half, right on the seam splitting its red part from its yellow part. He watched her meticulous treatment of the gummi worm with great fascination, unconsciously smiling faintly. He enjoyed seeing this unguarded side of her, without worry for pretense or protection.? Just being herself, in other words. It was like a gift all by itself.

She felt his stare and slowly turned to face him.? She narrowed her eyes just a bit, feeling suddenly defensive.? "What?? I like gummi worms," she said a bit petulantly and finished chewing the yellow half of the candy before popping the red part into her mouth.

"You're very cute when you don't have to hide yourself," he replied softly.? "I like seeing it."

She gave him a tiny smile, but was luckily saved from having to comment by the beginning of the movie.? Which was horrible.? A high pitched, shrieking police siren that would have had her ears laying back, flat against her skull had she been in Cat form.? As it was, she hissed and tried to shrink away from the screen as far as she could. He clapped his free hand to his ear, pressing the other against the side of her head, wincing as the sound went on and on. "This must be the most annoying movie opening in history," he said over the squeal.

She nodded and was immensely relieved when the siren stopped.? She whispered, "I hope that's not indicative of the rest of the movie."? She reached out and grabbed a handful of popcorn and began munching it as an image of Al Pacino - an almost-unrecognisable Al Pacino - bleeding from a wound on his cheek appeared on screen.? "Ever seen Devil's Advocate?" she whispered again.

He sighed softly in relief at the cessation of the horrible noise. "No, I don't believe so," he replied, taking a handful of popcorn right after her...making sure his hand brushed against hers on the way in.

She nodded, a smile at the "accidental" touch.? "We'll have to watch that one, too."? She lapsed into silence as the movie began in earnest now.? Apparently the story would be told in flashbacks.

Riley smirked during the scene when Serpico makes his first collar - a man caught in the act of gang raping a woman.? She was both intrigued and offended when detectives were shown taking the woman's statement with the accused in the same room.? "They don't do that now," she whispered softly to Daniel.? "And look - no lawyers present, either."?

"I bet they don't do that now, either," he whispered in a reply a moment later when the detective hauled off and kicked the suspect in the stones.

She winced but shook her head.? "You'd be suprised what goes on in the interrogation rooms."? Their whispering earned them dirty looks from other theatre-goers and she ducked her head, falling silent once more.

He made a mental note to avoid ever being arrested after hearing that.? He began to idly play with her hair, running his fingers along the length of it.? He managed to stay silent for most of the movie after, but couldn't help snickering when Serpico and the Captain leapt--very badly--from one building's roof to another. "Too bad they weren't Cats," he whispered.

"None too graceful, is he?? Despite the ballet lessons," she added with a grin, alluding to an earlier scene where Serpico had danced through the fingerprint file room.

He laughed, earning himself a dark look from several other patrons.? Instead of saying anything back, he leaned over and gently nipped her earlobe, payback for making him laugh out loud.

She barely contained a squeal and elbowed him in the ribs.? "I'm gonna move if you can't behave," she intoned gravely.

"Shhh," he replied succinctly, drawing his arm a little tighter around her shoulders...just in case she did try to move.

She muttered grumpily under her breath, but snuggled against him nonetheless, eyes back on the screen, alternately munching popcorn, gummi worms and sipping at the Icee.? Extracting an orange-and-white worm - her absolute favourite - she held it out to him with a lifted eyebrow.

He grinned and took the worm, nodding his thanks before chewing on it.? Such an odd texture.? He'd never had much exposure to gummi candies before. She watched him for a moment, awaiting his final verdict.? She wondered if he realised the importance of sharing that particular worm with him.? It was the best combination of gummi flavours possible - pineapple and orange - and was like the Holy Grail of gummi, a rare combination in any given box.

Feeling her eyes on him, he glanced over and smiled. "These are quite tasty," he whispered, leaning very close so it wouldn't disturb the others.

She graced him with a brilliant smile, pleased that he appreciated the goodness of gummi.? Turning her attention back to the movie, she snuggled a little bit closer and laid her head against his shoulder.

He leaned in and kissed the top her head before resting his cheek there, watching the movie.? He didn't try to stop the gentle purr the vibrated in his chest.

The film progressed nicely and she found that she was really enjoying it.? Her mood lightened considerably and all thoughts of the altercation they'd escaped just a few hours before had flown from her head.? It had been a very long time since she'd been just a normal girl, doing normal things like seeing a movie with a cute boy who seemed into her.

He felt it when she relaxed, and smiled, though she couldn't see it. He was enjoying the movie, as well, though he winced in sympathetic pain when Serpico was shot in the face. "Ouch," he said in a quiet murmur.

"He's lucky it was such a small caliber bullet," she said quietly, around a mouthful of a green-and-yellow worm, the third best kind.

"Mm, I wouldn't have have chosen 'lucky', myself," he said, turning so his mouth was almost brushing her ear.

The film soon ended, but she remained in her seat, watching the credits as they scrolled across the screen.? She glanced over at him.? "What did you think?"

"It was good.? Better than I had expected.? How about you?"

"The same, actually.? It's six years older than me, you know."? She took a long sip of the mostly-melted Icee and then stuffed the half-empty box of gummi worms into her bag.? Then she stood and stretched a little.? It had been a long movie, much longer than she had anticipated, and despite the snack, she was hungry.? "Dinner?"

He stood as well, mimicking her stretch, then slipped his fingers into hers. "Sounds lovely. Where to?"

She gave a little shrug.? "The Stars End Bar and Grill does a good burger.? We could play some pool or darts, too."

"Lead the way, then,? he said and she nodded and slipped down the stairs, heading out of the theatre and towards the SEB.
