Shakespeare for Kids!

Ever heard of the Reduced Shakespeare Company? Meet the Rhy'Din Shakespeare Catastrophe!

http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/images/stories/large/2010/03/16/CompleteShakespear2.jpg
(From left to right: Jonathan Granger, Mataya De Luca, Max Yako)

Formed for one day only, the RSC - that's the Rhy'Din Shakespeare Catastrophe - will whisk your children away and attempt to show them how great Shakespeare can be! With music and sword fights, danger and excitement, and the occasional inter-actor squabble, no doubt, these workshops are filled with fun that even the adults will enjoy!

Also, keep your eyes peeled for two very special performances ... A Midsummer Night's Dream (reduced for three performers and couple of reluctant volunteers), and Macbeth (also reduced). Not to mention both performances will end with a little something ripped straight from the other other RSC - that's the Reduced Shakespeare Company this time. The Complete Works of Shakespeare in Nought to Sixty Seconds!

For the young and young at heart

A 4 foot wide moss covered path leads to what appears to be a circular standing stone structure (think stone hedge)25ft across and 10 feet high the upright and cross stones forming 12 arches the arch at the end of the path being the only empty one, being used as an entrance, a sign that reads ?for the young and young at heart from ConColor Inc.? centered on the cross stone, in the other 11 is an internally brightly lite perpetual sheet waterfalls starting at the cross stones and flowing downward to a wide circle of river pebbles , spanning the top of the structure is a tight network of interwoven branches and glowing vines. Just off the path on either side of the entrance is a life size peacock in life like colors of softly glowing crystals when they are walked between their tails rise and fully open as their heads move back and forth.

On stepping inside guest are handed a 12 inch wide woven basket by a young woman as from one of several nearby roost bars a medium bird size dragon (crow) flies over to them, the reason for the basket and dragon will be revealed later. At the center of the structure stands a (8ft high and 3 ft. across) cylindrical clear crystal aquarium naturally decorated and housing a colorful assortment of large tropical fish, surrounding the aquarium is a 3foot walk space and surrounding this a 3foot high and 4foot wide counter the outer foot of wich is another aquarium similar to the central one in d?cor and inhabitants , from this counter two other young woman cook and three others serve hotdogs, hamburgers and fish strips on a stick (precooked hotdogs, hamburgers and fish dipped into a thick batter and deep fried) ,small bags of sweet potatoes spiral fries, clear unbreakable crystal cups of near frozen milk in an assortment of fruit and chocolate flavors dried fruit spears on a stick and leave shaped ovals of red and green transparent hard candy.
A pace inside of the waterfalls arches is a slowly rotating softly glowing clear crystal spiral as thick as a man waist(36 inches) of finger thick clear fibers arching off upward, and ending an a horizontal palm size(6 inches across) display platform.

Clockwise from the entrance the first displays in unbreakable crystal in lifelike colors figurines of birds, the second fish, the third insects, the fourth animals, the fifth fruit flavored rock candy, the sixth wrapped finely decorated mini cupcakes on a stick, and the seventh bagged honey crystal candied fruit, the eighth slide whistles, the ninth kazoos, the tenth reed pipes and the eleventh wind chimes all made of brightly colored unbreakable crystal

Now is the time for the purpose for basket and dragon to be revealed as a guest stands in front of each spiral they tell the dragon what item from that spiral they want and the dragon gets it and delivers it to the guest basket after the final spiral the dragon returns to their entrance roost.

One of the cooler things about owning property in WestEnd was the ability to really do some good for the community. When Riley had first bought the building that would eventually become the Zen Gardens, she had encountered a group of tatterdemalions living in the ruins of the area. She'd dubbed their leader Oliver, after the titular character in the Dickens novel. He hadn't remembered his real name and had liked the story of the orphan from 19th-century England.

In the three years that she'd lived in WestEnd, she'd done all she could to help out Oliver and his band of kids--giving them jobs, feeding and clothing them, protecting them, and ultimately convincing a few of them to leave the WestEnd and seek adoption through one of the city's many orphanages.

But one of her favourite things to do was to spend time with the twins, ten year old Begonia and Pete. When she and David had begun planning for Children's Day, it was the twins that she had in mind when selecting the activities, games, and even the food.

They arrived early and spent an hour or so just walking through the grounds and browsing at the kiosks, booths, and merchants. Then they played games, where David won Begonia a teddy bear and Pete scored himself a robot. After the games, it was time for David to go to his first bagua demonstration, so Riley treated the kids to funnel cakes, root beer floats, and chili-cheese fries as they waited for the Black Cat Martial Arts demonstrations to begin.

Once David and Chien Phan Long, David's star pupil, had finished their sparring matches and Chien had shown off the more acrobatic moves of Chinese wu shu, David joined his wife and the twins for Mataya's Rhy'Din Shakespeare Catastrophe. The kids joined 'Taya, Max, and Jon on stage and learned to sword fight, Pete played the part of Puck and Begonia the part of Helena in the RSC's rendition of Midsummer. The kids--and David and Riley, too--had a wonderful time and couldn't stop talking about their turns on the stage.

Then it was time for Riley's littlest students to present a piece from Swan Lake and Begonia decided that she wanted to begin taking ballet lessons from Riley, but Pete thought it was dumb and wandered off to play more games, winning himself a slingshot and his sister a ballerina doll.

They had lunch then, and played more games, rode the giant Ferris wheel and roller coaster, and then watched the fireworks that filled the skies above the hotel.

It was almost midnight when Riley and David finally arrived home to Twin Oaks, and the children were exhausted. Instead of taking them back to their hovel in the ruins near Zen, Riley tucked them into bed in the guest room at the top of the stairs and was pleased to see Finn laying across the bottom step, guarding the children against intruders.

As Riley fell into bed that night, equally exhausted, she had a happy and satisfied smile on her face. She'd fulfilled the dreams of two kids who had nothing...and fulfilled her own dream of being a mother, too.

Ever wonder what it might feel like to have a little magic at your fingertips? Let us show you! Come and see....

----------
http://ak1.polyvoreimg.com/cgi/img-set/cid/56484363/id/z51Av3mYRA6YCGyekv0wjw/size/y.jpg

Maggie took her place on stage in front of the audience and introduced herself. ?Hullo! My name?s Maggie Harker. I?m six years old and ?n? I?m a,? she looked over at her aunt, who whispered something to her, ?student at the Harker Duelin? ?n? Defense Acad?my.? She fussed with her teal and white dress. ?I?m here today to tell you ?bout makin? magic stuff!?

Murmurs went through the group from many of the adults about how young Maggie was. Some, of course, were about the irresponsibility of letting one so young play with magic. The children, though, were all eyes.

?Most important rule is ? never do magic stuff without a growed up or another kid that really knows what they?re doin?! Let me tells you right now, not all growed ups know that magic isn?t always somethin? that we pick to do. My Gran says sometimes it picks us and we have to learn how to use it!? The child looked over the crowd. ?For all you growed ups out there, if your kid has magic stuff and you don?t, find someone to teach ?em! ?cause if they don?t learn, they could accs?dently hurt someone!? She took a breath and looked over the faces. ?So, like my Mama says ? don?t try this without your magic teacher watchin?!? She gestured to those getting ready to present their portion of the show after her. ?I brought a few with me!? She grinned impishly.

She took her plush bear off the stool that was next to her and set it on the stage. ?This my bear, Snowstorm. Right now, he looks like an ord?nary toy bear.? She crouched very carefully since she was wearing a dress. ?He?s what they call a summon and he only works for me.? As Maggie petted the toy, it came to life and shook itself. ?Snowstorm has two jobs. He?s like a sports team, he does defendin? ?n? goal scorin?!? Every so often, she looked into the crowd and waved at familiar people. As Maggie talked, the little bear grew and stood on his hind legs. He was half the size of a full grown polar bear when Maggie stepped back to let the children in the audience view him. Excited noises and clapping went through the crowd.

Watching the bear, she trotted to the side of the stage and hauled someone to the middle of the stage.. ?This is my Aunt Rhi. Say Hi, Aunt Rhi!?

Rhiannon wiggled her fingers and grinned. ?Hi.? Most of the audience waved back. A few catcalls were tossed Rhi?s way by some of the men watching.

?Aunt Rhi?s gonna shows you all what Wizard Blades looks like so?s I can show you how Snowstorm does one of his jobs!? Hearing his name, the now full grown polar bear let out a soft growl. ?You ready, Aunt Rhi??

Since she was working with Maggie, Rhiannon used crystal magic. She cupped her palms together and a clear crystal formed. She murmured a word or two. The crystal exploded and sent icy shards toward Maggie. The bear shook his shaggy coat which began to glow. He stepped between the shards and Maggie to absorb the magical ice daggers.

?That?s what we call the Armor spell! It helps keep people from gettin? cut up by the sharp things!? Maggie explained. ?Now, I?m gonna shows you one of the winter spells!? She nodded to her aunt who repeated her prior actions and sent the crystal shards flying. Instead of being absorbed by the bear, this time it was countered with something else! Maggie delivered her charm in Greek as she was used to doing and in Common so it could be understood by the crowd. ?χιών, καλώ την πολική αρκούδα και τους ανέμους του χειμώνα! Hiona, I call the polar bear and the winds of winter!? Maggie roared along with the bear. The freezing wind that rose up to stop and freeze the icy shards in mid flight also drifted out into the first few rows in the audience. Once the exchange was complete, Maggie stilled the bear with her hand. Snowstorm began to revert to the visage of the plush toy. Rhiannon whispered in Maggie?s ear then move back to the side of the stage. Maggie nodded in response then set the bear up on the stool again.

?The last thing I?m going to shows you today is what they call an ill-oo-sion. That means it?s s?pposed to make you see somethin? that?s not really there. ?loosions aren?t real. They can be like scary movies!? Her eyes got all wide and her voice was bit breathy as she explained. ?They?re very good for scarin? people without hurtin? ?em! So, if you?re ?fraid of spiders, ?member,? she wagged her finger at the group, ?this is not real!?

Maggie didn?t sing I?m a Little Teapot like she normally would have. Instead, she told a story. ?Once upon a time, there was a lady named Ah-rack-nee. She was very good at weaving pictures into cloth! Her teacher was named Athena.? Maggie grinned. ?She?s my Mama?s aunt!? Behind Maggie, a shimmering spider web began to form. ?One day, someone asked Arachne who taught her to weave such pretty things. They asked if it was Athena because Aunt ?Thena is the goddess in charge of that stuff.? Maggie sighed woefully. ?Arachne,? she shook her head ruefully, ?did a very dumb thing. ?rack-nee told a fib!? Shocked sounds came from the children. ?She said she had no teacher there was nobody on earth or in heaven that weave as good as her!? A spider about the size of a tarantula could be seen weaving the web behind Maggie. ?now, my Aunt ?Thena didn?t like that much! so, she made herself an illusion and when she went to see Arachne, she looked like a very old lady. The old lady that ?rachne saw, told her that she shouldn?t be boastful because her weavin? talents were a gift from the gods.. You knowed what that word means?? Hazel eyes looked over the crowd to murmurs from the kids.. ?Boastin? means talkin? smack.? Maggie gave her parents a big grin. Rhiannon and Dennis Harker were in the audience. The spider in the web had grown larger as Maggie told her tale. ?Arachne smarted off ?n? told what she thought was an ole lady that Athena could bring it anytime ?cause she could do better than any ole goddess!? She made wide hand gestures and it looked like the spider was going to chomp her hand off! Gasps came from the audience. ?And ? that was when Aunt ?thena sent the ?loosion away! There she was! She told ?rachne that she accepted the challenge!?

Maggie peeked over her shoulder at her creation in progress and grinned. ?Oh, hi, George!? was the gleeful greeting to the spider. The large spider?s fangs were bared then retracted. ?So, where was I?? Maggie paused a moment in her story as a few reminders were tossed out. ?That?s right! Thank you!? She waved. ?They had a contest with someone judging. The judge couldn?t decide who did a better job of it! They were both very good! Aunt ?Thena got angry because ?rachne had been mean and not ree-spec-full of her teacher! So.. Aunt ?Thena smacked Arachne then tore up the bee-yoo-tee-ful work she did!? The web behind her tore in half. ?Arachne was sooooooo very sad that she hanged herself up with a rope!? The spider hung from a single strand of silk and was still. ?It made Aunt ?thena sad, too, because she didn?t want Arachne to die!? She gestured to the motionless spider. ?So, Aunt brought her back to life, but as a spider. Arachne and all her children and their children, would always be weavers!?

The illusionary spider dropped down to the stage next to Maggie. Screams and shouts came from the crowd. ?Remember, now.? A wave of her hand dispelled the image. ?Things aren?t always what they look like!? Maggie gave the audience a graceful curtsy. ?I?m Maggie Harker and I thank you very much!? She turned toward the others with a bright grin. ?Ok, who goes next??

Eregor

?That would be me!? Looking sharp in his top hat and tailed coat, Eregor stepped out of the wings and bowed to Maggie as the girl took up her plush bear, waved, and skipped off the stage. Turning to the still-clapping audience, he joined them in applause with a smile. ?Maggie?s fantastic, isn?t she?? Raising both hands, he held them until the clapping died down before continuing. ?Thank you all for stopping by on this glorious day, here at the Imperial Grand, to see our little magic show. My name is Eregor, and I believe you have all met the lovely and talented Rhiannon Brock.? One hand swept back to where Rhi stood, and dropped as she stepped forward, beaming. ?We?d like to show you all a little bit of how magic can change between different casters.?

?If you ever try your hand at magic,? added Rhi, ?be creative and let your imagination shape the spell. For example, you saw me earlier sending crystal shards at Maggie, a spell type that on Twilight Isle is called Wizard Blades. Gory?? She turned to regard her cohort with a grin and a wink. ?Show them how you like to cast that one!?

Matching that grin, Eregor gestured and a flurry of shapes formed in the air in front of him... a flight of hummingbirds, but made of paper, origami flyers brought to life through magic. They circled up and around his head before darting across the stage towards Rhi. Just before the first one struck, however, she vanished and reappeared upstage, wagging a finger at him. Meanwhile, the origami birds fluttered over the audience, looping in smooth, synchronized motions before settling down atop the heads and shoulders of delighted boys and girls. ?Just a little something to help you remember all the fun you?re having today,? explained Eregor, the children?s laughter bringing a smile to his face. ?Now, you just saw Rhi get out of the way of my little birds; that was a spell known as Displacement. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn?t; that?s part of what makes magical dueling fun!?

Stepping back downstage, Rhi held up one finger to draw the audience?s attention. ?For example, while it worked with the magic blade-birds, displacing is no good against something like this!? Speaking something in Greek, she pointed towards Eregor and a bolt of lightning streaked across the stage; he raised a hand, and a circle of golden light formed in the air between them just before the lightning struck. ?For a Mage Bolt like that one, you?re better off with a Shield.?

?One last thing we?d like to show you, before we go for now... earlier Maggie showed you how illusions can be used to distract someone with a fright, but they can also be used to dazzle and amaze; this type of spell is collectively referred to as a Mind Whip.? Eregor tapped the side of his forehead as he spoke. ?So let the two of us, together, leave you all with a little bit of dazzle to take you into the rest of the festivities here at the Imperial Grand today, such as Shakespeare for Kids and the Black Cat Studio Ballet and Wu Shu shows... and be sure to come back for our mid-day show featuring Madame Rachael Douglas and Empress Mallow, and their spectacular sorcellerie!?

Rhiannon smiled brightly and added, ?Jacen Balthazar and Siofra Kelley are scheduled to be making presentations later on as well. We are all part of a dueling team called Forces of Nature.?

Turning to face one another, Rhi and Eregor bowed and took a step forward, and then another, before beginning to circle each other around the stage. As they circled, like a slow and intricate dance, their hands moved and lights began to appear in the air above and around them. The lights under Rhi?s direction shaped themselves into mermaids, dancing and swaying in mid-air as they moved out over the audience. Eregor?s display formed abstract swirls of color, a kaleidoscopic backdrop against which the mermaids performed pirouettes. Then, as the lightshow reached a crescendo, a rather silly-looking spider dropped from the ceiling and waved to the audience right before everything went dark.

The lights rose and there was Maggie standing in front of Rhi and Eregor, the plush bear in her arm. All three of them bowed to the cheers of the audience, and again, before turning with a final wave and heading offstage.

Rachael Blackthorne

The scarred woman confidently strode onto the stage at the Imperial Grand Hotel at the start of the scheduled afternoon performances. A white top hat adorned her raven hair, which was worn loose about her gold threaded brocade tuxedo jacket covered shoulders.

"Bonjour, Monsieurs, Madames, petits! I am Madame Rachael Douglas, and together with my partner, Empress Mallow, we plan to dazzle you with feats of sorcellerie."

The spotlight that highlighted her entrance now trailed behind her, in search of the other part to this magic demonstration.

"Mon dieu, it appears that the Empress is, how do you say, fashionably late for the performance. Perhaps it is best that we should start without her, non?"

Laughter from the smaller and younger members of the audience drew Rachael's attention to the blue silk covered table where the items necessary for the performance had been set up. Among the props was a white fluffball kitten that preened and posed under her blue glitter top hat adorned with a white silk star lily.

"It seems that my fou f?lin has, how do you say, beat me to the punch, after all." The Watchwoman's lips twitched with unrestrained amusement. "Very well. Mallow, it is showtime."

She withdrew what appeared to be a simple magic wand from an inside pocket of her tuxedo jacket, and waved it dramatically over the kitten. A kaleidoscope of colored light washed over Mallow, and she zipped under cover of the light show to the platform set up so that the relatively tiny kitten could be seen easily even by those in the back seats to the performance.

"For our first display of sorcellerie, we shall try Wizard Blades versus a Shield?." Rachael's words trailed off as a hailstorm of blue plastic swizzle sticks flew her way when Mallow swished her bottlebrush tail. Laughter issued from the audience. "Empress, you are supposed to wait until I say ready to do that?." She realized her mistake as more of the swizzle sticks flew at her, accompanied by more audience laughter. "Mallow, non."

A collective "Aww!" rose from the audience when the kitten flopped on her belly on the platform, and put her paws in front of her sapphire blue eyes.

"Let us try that again, non?" Rachael waved the wand in a circle before her, and a shimmering blue energy field formed. "Now, mon petit f?lin. Ready."

Mallow sat up and swished her bottlebrush tail. The swizzle sticks gathered up and shot for the blue energy field, which dramatically fizzled out upon contact.

"Tres bonne, petit. On Twilight Isle, that is an effective attack strategy. We will now show you what can happen if someone expects such an attack. Mallow, you know what to do this time, non? Ready."

Rachael waved the wand over the swizzle sticks and they shot out toward the kitten, but halted in mid-air before Mallow to fall harmlessly around her. Another collective "Aww!" escaped from the audience at the out and out adorably cute big-eyed expression on the kitten's face.

"That, mon amis, is what is known as using a Mind Whip to stop the blades. The Empress, of course, has her own special way of performing such an attack on the mind, non?" Mallow preened on the platform to bursts of spontaneous applause from the crowd, which made the kitten preen even more.

"And now, for our final performance of the day, we shall show you what a mutual attack looks like. This is where two spells combine to gain points for both in the ring. Mallow, you know what to do, non?"

Almost indignant mews issued from the kitten, as if to say 'Of course I know what to do, you silly human pet!', which brought out waves of laughter from the audience. Rachael's lips twitched fiercely with amusement.

"Very well. Mallow. Ready."

Rachael's Lunar gray Gargoyle dark lens shielded sapphire blue eyes stared intently at Mallow, while a barrage of blue silk pillows simultaneously flew from the prop table to pelt the kitten's human pet.

"Tres bonne, petit. That combination was known as a Mind Whip on my part, and Meteor Shower on the part of the Empress. Her form of that spell is much more harmless than the spell sounds, non?"

Mallow preened on the platform again to bursts of applause.

"And that concludes our part of the performances of sorcellerie today. Again, I am Madame Rachael Douglas?." Rachael's words trailed off as Mallow leaped from the platform to be caught easily in her human pet's arms. "And this is Empress Mallow. We bid you farewell for now, and look forward to seeing you on Twilight Isle in the future. Au revoir!"

Rachael bowed gracefully with Mallow in her arms. Under cover of the applause and cheers from the audience, she spoke softly to the kitten, "One day, mon petit, I will not be there to catch you. But that day is not today."

They left the stage while the stagehands cleaned up the props in preparation for the next act to begin.

Pharlen

Date: 2012-09-04 12:33 EST
A daytime showing of the VonTombs family, quite a rarity, but when Desdenova brought home the flier, it sounded like a fine way to get out and enjoy the late summer warmth and to meet some of the people that their son had made friends with.

Jack, sleek and handsome as always in a dark pinstriped suit from an earlier era carried little Alice on his shoulders. The todder was all dark eyes and amazement, ready to escape and cause any amount of panic by vanishing into the crowd.

Which was fine, Pharlen kept reminding her notoriously paranoid husband, as she had tracking devices on all of their children. Desdenova hung onto his father's hand, but clearly was looking around at the other kids, resplendent in one of Jack's old college t-shirts and shorts. Jackie brought up the rear in all of her rock-a-billy teen glory, the best way to get her bright red lipstick past her dad without a lot of bellowing.

With Pharlen and Alice's mommy-daughter Dorothy of Oz dresses, the family looked like they were ready to put some harm onto any maverick wicked witches.

"Who are you looking for, bratface?" Jackie asked her brother too sweetly.

"Mo-om!" Desdenova promptly complained.

"Who is he looking for?" Jack asked, amused at Desdenova's prompt resorting to parental intervention.

"MOM!" the boy squalled.

"I will put you ALL back into the car," Pharlen reminded them tartly.

"Aw, you're a hardnose," Jack grinned at his wife, transferring Alice to her arms. He scuffed Desdenova's cheek, keen green eyes picking out the various games of chance.

"Come on, kid, show your Pappy how good your arm is. Let's go clean out the big prizes," Jack encouraged with a chuckle. Desdenova beamed up at his father, never dreaming Jack was planning on weasling out information on whoever he was looking for.

Parents had evil mojo, that's for sure.

"Gonna go watch the hotties sparring, Ma," Jackie chortled, "And dance!"

"Meet at the dessert booth in four hours, or I swear I'll make pinatas out of all of you!" Pharlen yelled after her scattering family. Alice cheered at Pharlen's bellow.

"Let's go watch the shows, princess," Pharlen chuckled, towing along her little black haired doppleganger.

Of course, before Pharlen stuffed her sugar crashed family into the old Chevy panel van and took them home in various degrees of fun coma, she would meet the Lo's and present them with her card.

A very simple card, reading only "Pharlen Von Tombs, CNUL 345", but say her name thrice and she would appear.

Her thanks for their wonderful event, and for befriending Desdenova.

Desdenova VonTombs

Date: 2012-09-04 12:46 EST
Desdenova's arm and eye were good, very good, and he didn't even resort to any cantrips to cheat, either. Jack beamed as he watched his son peg balloons with darts and snag bottles with rings. Time spent teaching his kids to flick a scalpel paid off in interesting ways.

But as Jack always said, you should share your interests with your kids.

"Who's that little cutie?" Jack asked idly as Desdenova lead him to grab hot pretzels. He didn't exactly indicate anyone from a group of kids walking by, but Desdenova's head whipped around and studied faces. He grumped, grabbing his pretzel.

"No Mia?" Jack asked, all innocence. Desdenova glowered.

"Dad! You're being all RhyDin. Mia's my friend. She goes to school with me now, I see her every day. She's one of the nerdlingers."

Jack sighed, clasping over his heart.

"My own son, a computer nerd."

"Dad!" Desdenova complained.

"So you're saying you'd rather hang out with a pretty girl your age than your old man?" Jack teased. Desdenova cackled.

"Duh."

"That's my boy," Jack grinned, squeezing Desdenova's shoulder and pulling him to his side for a hug. "Well, you can run off and play with her if she shows up, but you're on your own for sister torments. Unless you want to dish on any evil she's done you're holding back as blackmail."

The Von Tombs were definitely not the Cleavers.

"Mmm but that would mean I had something to dish on Jackie and you'd make me tell you, and I wouldn't get anything out of it," Desdenova pointed out. Jack beamed proudly, even had a tear in his eye.

"You make your old man proud as hell, boy. Come on, let's get some of those cakes."

"Katt makes those, they're really good. If you ask, she'll let you take a cake home," Desdenova beamed, hugging his father tightly.

"Ah, and we'll send your mom later to get another one. Let's go, kiddo."
