"London calling to the faraway towns
Now war is declared - and battle come down
London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls"

Riley glanced inside the Red Dragon at Salvador Delahada, and watched Judah Bishop walking away from the Inn with Aoife Duggan, hand in hand with her, like he wasn't some common criminal. Well, he wasn't, but that was besides the point. Riley looked back at David, who was standing on the porch with her. "Let's go to London."
David turned at Riley's words, and nodded. "Sounds f*cking great," he said to her.
She held her hand out to him. "Right now. Let's go see Mindy's Feeb friend. He's got a portal thingy that we can take to Baton Rouge, and then we can hop a flight to Heathrow. We can see Danny in less than a day."
"Hell. I'm game." A break from this crazy city would be awesome. He took her hand, too.
"Perfect." She twined her fingers with his and tugged him off the porch. "I'm f*cking serious. I can't... I can't f*cking do this anymore, David." Her voice was soft, drained of emotion and energy.
He nodded in agreement, walking down the stairs. This had to be ten times harder for her than it was for him, and he was really damn tired of it himself. "You need a break. I need a break."
"Every time I turn around, one of those two chuckle heads is making my job impossible. I hate it. I hate them. Both of them." She closed her eyes, letting him lead her home. He slipped his arm around her shoulders, for once not caring who might see it, and held her against him as they walked. She snuggled against him and laid her head on his shoulder, glad to be leaving the Inn behind them. Hey, maybe there'd be some Makos to munch on once they got closer to Zen. "I'd quit, too, but for the fear of laying this mess in someone else's lap and Dris tracking me down and murdering me in my sleep."
"Nah, don't quit. Just take a vacation with Dan and I. You'll feel better for it."
"Until I have to come back to this mire of...farce." She fell silent then, reserving further discussion until they were home.
"Maybe they'll kill each other while we're gone," he said hopefully.
"Oh, yay! That would be too perfect for words. Hey, do you think we could stay away until like the 9th of August?"
"Why, what's the 9th?"
"My birthday. That would be a spectacularly good present."
He glanced over at her. "I didn't know that. Sure, why not?" He filed that information away, resolving to get her something nice.
"Cool. I'll let Jin know we'll be gone for the next two months or so. I'm sure he'll be pleased with that."
"F*ck Jin," he said shortly.
She blinked and looked up at him, shocked at his outburst. She'd been under the impression that David liked Jin, respected his dedication and commitment to bringing justice and law to the city. "What? Why?"
"Where's he been this whole time? I haven't seen him at the station for more than a week."
"Oh. It's hard on him, you know...with her being involved and everything."
"Sure, and it's so easy on you," he said, shaking his head as they turned the corner and left the Inn and its hated, complicated patrons behind.
She sighed.? "It's not easy on me.? It's stupidly hard.? But I'm used to it.? Well, to the crazy hours and the pressure and the stress. The inhuman perps who keep dying and coming back over and over... That I doubt I'll ever get used to."
"I know. But I don't have to like how Jin just vanishes for a week when you need all the help you can get."
"I could fire him.? But then I'd be even more screwed than I am already. If I had a clue about what I'm doing...if the laws and justice system in this town weren't so completely f*cked up..."? She stopped talking and just shook her head.? She was making excuses for missing so many things that she wouldn't have if she were on firmer, more familiar footing.
He understood the impulse to make excuses. Especially when there was more than a little truth to them. "I keep thinking the same thing," he said.
"The impulse is just to cut and run, David."
"Yeah. But...do what, then?"
"Go home.? Start a dance and yoga studio there.? Forget the law. Or maybe work pro bono and take only the cases I want. Be a children's advocate or something."
"Home...Boston?"
She nodded.? "Yes."? She looked up at him.? "You could come.? Daniel would probably come, too."
"There's no probably about it," he snorted. "That guy'd follow you if you moved to a condo in Hell." He paused for a long moment, not looking at her. "Maybe I would, too," finished quietly.
She stopped walking, just in front of the wall that separated the city and WestEnd.? "What are you saying?"
He went over to the wall and leaned up against it, looking at her. "I've been thinking about your offer the other night," he said. She went and stood in front of him, arms loosely crossed over her stomach.? She looked up at him, staying mute and giving him the chance to speak. "Were you serious?" he asked her quietly.
She answered without thought. "Of course I was serious."
He nodded. "Just had to be sure." She nodded.? She understood. He took a deep breath. "I think...no, I don't think. I do want to. But..."
"But...?"
"Two things. First, obviously, we have to talk to Dan about it."
"Of course.? What's the second?"
"There'll be no hiding it anymore if I move in."
She gave him a tiny smile.? "I haven't really been hiding it lately, have I?"
He matched that little smile. "No...not really."
"Well, then... Is that the only problem?? Keeping it secret?"
"Well. What's it going to do to our jobs? Assuming we don't cut and run."
She shrugged.? "I honestly doubt anyone's gonna care.? And if they do, I'll quit.? I'll go back to the studio."
"Hm." He nodded slowly. "You're serious," he said. It wasn't a question. "If you're willing to do that, then I'm bound as a man to be just as brave." He flashed a quick grin, but his eyes weren't laughing.
She chuckled.? "There's that man code again.? Is there a girl's guide to the man code?"
"The first rule of the man code is you don't talk about the man code."
"Oh, my bad.? I didn't know the man code was also the Fight Club code.? C'mon."? She reached out and grabbed his sleeve to tug him through the opening in the wall that would lead to the Zen Gardens. He followed her, stepping through the opening and glancing around. Seemed quiet tonight.
