"London calling to the faraway towns
Now war is declared - and battle come down
London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls"

-- "London Calling", The Clash

Riley glanced inside the Red Dragon at Salvador Delahada, and watched Judah Bishop walking away from the Inn with Aoife Duggan, hand in hand with her, like he wasn't some common criminal. Well, he wasn't, but that was besides the point. Riley looked back at David, who was standing on the porch with her. "Let's go to London."

David turned at Riley's words, and nodded. "Sounds f*cking great," he said to her.

She held her hand out to him. "Right now. Let's go see Mindy's Feeb friend. He's got a portal thingy that we can take to Baton Rouge, and then we can hop a flight to Heathrow. We can see Danny in less than a day."

"Hell. I'm game." A break from this crazy city would be awesome. He took her hand, too.

"Perfect." She twined her fingers with his and tugged him off the porch. "I'm f*cking serious. I can't... I can't f*cking do this anymore, David." Her voice was soft, drained of emotion and energy.

He nodded in agreement, walking down the stairs. This had to be ten times harder for her than it was for him, and he was really damn tired of it himself. "You need a break. I need a break."

"Every time I turn around, one of those two chuckle heads is making my job impossible. I hate it. I hate them. Both of them." She closed her eyes, letting him lead her home. He slipped his arm around her shoulders, for once not caring who might see it, and held her against him as they walked. She snuggled against him and laid her head on his shoulder, glad to be leaving the Inn behind them. Hey, maybe there'd be some Makos to munch on once they got closer to Zen. "I'd quit, too, but for the fear of laying this mess in someone else's lap and Dris tracking me down and murdering me in my sleep."

"Nah, don't quit. Just take a vacation with Dan and I. You'll feel better for it."

"Until I have to come back to this mire of...farce." She fell silent then, reserving further discussion until they were home.

"Maybe they'll kill each other while we're gone," he said hopefully.

"Oh, yay! That would be too perfect for words. Hey, do you think we could stay away until like the 9th of August?"

"Why, what's the 9th?"

"My birthday. That would be a spectacularly good present."

He glanced over at her. "I didn't know that. Sure, why not?" He filed that information away, resolving to get her something nice.

"Cool. I'll let Jin know we'll be gone for the next two months or so. I'm sure he'll be pleased with that."

"F*ck Jin," he said shortly.

She blinked and looked up at him, shocked at his outburst. She'd been under the impression that David liked Jin, respected his dedication and commitment to bringing justice and law to the city. "What? Why?"

"Where's he been this whole time? I haven't seen him at the station for more than a week."

"Oh. It's hard on him, you know...with her being involved and everything."

"Sure, and it's so easy on you," he said, shaking his head as they turned the corner and left the Inn and its hated, complicated patrons behind.

She sighed.? "It's not easy on me.? It's stupidly hard.? But I'm used to it.? Well, to the crazy hours and the pressure and the stress. The inhuman perps who keep dying and coming back over and over... That I doubt I'll ever get used to."

"I know. But I don't have to like how Jin just vanishes for a week when you need all the help you can get."

"I could fire him.? But then I'd be even more screwed than I am already. If I had a clue about what I'm doing...if the laws and justice system in this town weren't so completely f*cked up..."? She stopped talking and just shook her head.? She was making excuses for missing so many things that she wouldn't have if she were on firmer, more familiar footing.

He understood the impulse to make excuses. Especially when there was more than a little truth to them. "I keep thinking the same thing," he said.

"The impulse is just to cut and run, David."

"Yeah. But...do what, then?"

"Go home.? Start a dance and yoga studio there.? Forget the law. Or maybe work pro bono and take only the cases I want. Be a children's advocate or something."

"Home...Boston?"

She nodded.? "Yes."? She looked up at him.? "You could come.? Daniel would probably come, too."

"There's no probably about it," he snorted. "That guy'd follow you if you moved to a condo in Hell." He paused for a long moment, not looking at her. "Maybe I would, too," finished quietly.

She stopped walking, just in front of the wall that separated the city and WestEnd.? "What are you saying?"

He went over to the wall and leaned up against it, looking at her. "I've been thinking about your offer the other night," he said. She went and stood in front of him, arms loosely crossed over her stomach.? She looked up at him, staying mute and giving him the chance to speak. "Were you serious?" he asked her quietly.

She answered without thought. "Of course I was serious."

He nodded. "Just had to be sure." She nodded.? She understood. He took a deep breath. "I think...no, I don't think. I do want to. But..."

"But...?"

"Two things. First, obviously, we have to talk to Dan about it."

"Of course.? What's the second?"

"There'll be no hiding it anymore if I move in."

She gave him a tiny smile.? "I haven't really been hiding it lately, have I?"

He matched that little smile. "No...not really."

"Well, then... Is that the only problem?? Keeping it secret?"

"Well. What's it going to do to our jobs? Assuming we don't cut and run."

She shrugged.? "I honestly doubt anyone's gonna care.? And if they do, I'll quit.? I'll go back to the studio."

"Hm." He nodded slowly. "You're serious," he said. It wasn't a question. "If you're willing to do that, then I'm bound as a man to be just as brave." He flashed a quick grin, but his eyes weren't laughing.

She chuckled.? "There's that man code again.? Is there a girl's guide to the man code?"

"The first rule of the man code is you don't talk about the man code."

"Oh, my bad.? I didn't know the man code was also the Fight Club code.? C'mon."? She reached out and grabbed his sleeve to tug him through the opening in the wall that would lead to the Zen Gardens. He followed her, stepping through the opening and glancing around. Seemed quiet tonight.

"I miss Danny," she said softly.? "He'd go hunting with me tonight."

He glanced over at her. "If you're that full of energy, I'm sure we can find a way to use it."

She gave him a tiny smile.? "I'm not sure you really want to make that offer, David."

"No?"

"I'm...scared of hurting you."

"I'm stronger than you," he pointed out.

Her brows rose.? "Your point?"

"I could stop you from hurting me."

Without warning, she spun to face him, her hand lashing out in a knife-palm strike aimed at his neck. His arm automatically whirled up in a circular block fast enough to make his sleeve crack like a whip, deflecting her arm out and harmlessly to the side. She gave him a cocky little smile and threw a punch with her other hand, intending to catch him right on the tip of his chin.

His head rolled to the left, slipping the blow as he stepped in a blindingly fast half-circle to her left, which incidentally brought his left arm, still raised from the block, into a collision course with her left shoulder, where it would push her back and off-balance. The fist she'd thrown at his chin turned into a grabby hand and she caught his shoulder and rolled onto her back, taking him down with her.? Once there, she twisted at the waist and was atop him now, legs straddling his hips while she attempted to pull his arm behind him, up into a painful lock.

He slapped his free hand down onto the ground just before he hit to absorb the impact, then jerked his captured arm forward sharply, abandoning technique for a just moment to use pure strength to haul her entire body around and off of him. She let go almost immediately as she felt him begin to toss her away, coming to rest on her stomach just a foot or so away.? She got her hands underneath her, stopping her face from smashing into the the ground, and pushed to her feet and stood, hopping a few feet backwards, grinning at him.

He slid his legs under himself and popped up to his feet as well, meeting that grin with one of his own. He rubbed his hands together, dislodging a few pieces of gravel from the hand that stopped his fall. She stood loose, relaxed, crouched slightly, watching him for any indications that he might make a leap at her. His hands rose, weaving small circles in front of him, and he darted a step towards her.

She took a step back, pulling her head back, hands raising to deflect anything he threw her way. He smiled, taking a few quick steps to the right, circling towards her. And she circled left, keeping him squarely in front of her.? She grinned at him, something very un-Riley-like lurking in her eyes. His left hand darted suddenly for her face. She raised her right arm, blocking the blow with her forearm, and threw an open-palmed strike of her own with her left hand, aimed at his solar plexus.

His hand closed on her forearm and he stepped back, jerking her right arm to full extension and beyond. This also made her left hand's strike fall far short. Shifting her weight to her right leg, she took a step into him and then used those stupidly long legs to her advantage and swung a kick with her left, aimed at his right hip. He stepped left into her, pressing their bodies intimately together so he was well inside the arc of her kick. His left foot landed behind hers and he pushed hard on her forearm that he still held.

"Ooh," she breathed as he pushed himself against her.? She brought her free arm up, and grabbed his duty belt, hanging onto it for dear life. He winked and jack-knifed his torso forwards, swinging his right arm across her chest and forcing her backwards at the waist. She went limp, letting him knock her over as far as he wanted.? She still had a death grip on his belt and if she went down, so would his pants.

Well, couldn't have that. Not in the middle of the street, at least. He simply dropped forwards, letting her fall and him land on her. "Oof," she said as she landed hard on the broken, chaotic cobbles of the streets in WestEnd.? "Urgh," she said when he fell on top of her.? Her hand was pinned between them, her fingers still curled around his belt, her other arm still caught in his hand.? She tried to pull her legs up and shove him away with her feet.

He grinned down at her, making no move to stop her legs from sliding up under him. She paused at that grin and then relaxed underneath him.? "You're going to have to replace this dress," she said softly.

He snorted. "Billing me for it, huh?"

"Yep.? And if you wanted so badly to get me onto my back, why didn't you just say so?"

"Hey, who swung first?"

"Who challenged me?"? She wriggled her arm out from between their bodies and tweaked his nose.

He snapped playfully at her fingers. "You chose to take it as a challenge," he pointed out.

"Oh, puh-leeze.? You meant it as a challenge.? You just wanted to show off your bah-whatever skills to the pretty girl."

"Well. Can't argue that. I do love showing the pretty girl my skills."

"Uh-huh.? Get up, before something decides to eat us,? Riley said with a half-smile. He stood smoothly, pulling her up with him. He even brushed the back of her dress off.

She rewarded him with a kiss on his cheek for that chivalrous effort.? "Can we go home now?? If we're leaving in the morning, I have to pack...and call the Feeb."

He smiled. "Sure, let's go,? he said and he started walking towards the Gardens, taking her hand and drawing her with him.

The hotel was on world-famous Bourbon Street, in the heart of the French Quarter.? It was a little boutique affair, a restored 18th century town-house, with seven rooms and breakfast in the banana-tree lined courtyard at 8:00 a.m.? David and Riley's room was on the second floor and came complete with a balcony that overlooked the courtyard and the city skyline beyond. Riley was sitting on the bed, watching David as he stood on the balcony looking over the city.? "It's kinda too bad that we can't spend more time here.? I love New Orleans," she said to him.

"It's pretty," he said. "I've really only seen the pictures from Katrina. Not much like this." He waved a hand out at the view from the balcony.

She rose and went to stand next to him on the balcony, reaching for his hand and twining her fingers through his.? "The French Quarter's on higher land, so it wasn't affected nearly as badly as like the Ninth Ward was.? When we go to the airport tomorrow, you'll see, even five years later, how bad Katrina was."? She leaned against him softly, her head on his shoulder.? "I have to call Danny and tell him we're coming."

"Good idea," he said, nodding. He squeezed her hand softly and turned to look at her. "I bet he'll be surprised."

"Heh.? Yeah."? She kissed his cheek and went back inside to track down her purse and her cell phone.? Finding both, she sat down on the bed again and dug out the slip of paper Danny had scribbled down his parents' phone number on.? She dialed carefully and listened to the funny double ring of the British telephone service.

After a couple of rings, the phone was picked up.? "Hello?" The voice on the other end of the line was a woman's soft soprano.

Riley's brows rose.? This was rather unexpected.? She'd assumed that Danny would have answered, though why that might be was currently beyond her.? It wasn't as if she were calling Danny's hotel room. He was staying with his parents. "Uh, Mrs Tej?" she hesitated.

"Yes, this is she. Who is calling, please?" The woman's accent was quite similar to Daniel's but much more precise and clipped.

"My name is Riley O'Rourke.? I'm a...uh...a friend of Daniel's."

"Oh, yes, of course. Daniel has told us all about you, Riley. May I call you Riley?" The woman sounded somewhat surprised; clearly they had not been expecting a call from her.

"Yes, please do.? Is he there?? May I speak with him?"? Two things popped in Riley's head - one, she was talking to Danny's mother and two, Danny's mother's accent made her want to stand up perfectly straight and use her nicest manners.

"Of course, just a moment, please, and I shall fetch him." There was a soft thump as the phone was set down, and then, faintly, the woman's voice calling Daniel's name.

She snickered and called out to David, "His mum sounds like Mary Poppins."

David snorted. "If she starts singing, you better put it on speaker."

She laughed.? "Of course.? You know what we should do in the morning before we go catch our flight? We should go to Cafe du Monde and have coffee and beignets."? She was still listening into the phone, waiting for Danny.

"The hell's a ben-yay?"

"They're like doughnuts.? You'll love 'em, Mr Police Officer."

David nodded, giving a little grin. "I see how it is. Believing all those cliches."

Before she could respond to that, there was a clatter and a thump as the phone was grabbed up. "Sundari?" Daniel's voice asked. There was mingled surprise and hope in his voice.

She grinned at David and then said softly into the phone,? "Hi, there."

She could hear his answering grin. "Hi yourself. You've no idea how great it is to hear your voice."

"I've missed you so much, Danny."? She closed her eyes against the sudden threat of tears.

"I've missed you, too, pyara," he said softly. "Wait. Are you here? On Earth?"

"Yes, in New Orleans.? David and I ran away.? We're on a flight in the morning to Heathrow.? Think you can meet us there?"

"Ran away? Has something happened? You're coming here? Of course I can meet you. There's nothing I'd want more."

"Yes.? Yes.? Yes.? Good.? I can't wait."? She grinned as she addressed the myriad questions flying at her.? "Do you want to say hi to David?"

"In a moment. Are you all right?"

She sighed deeply and squeezed shut her eyes.? "It's a mess back there.? Things are out of control and I...? I couldn't handle it anymore.? I had to get away."? Her voice was soft, weary, showing the fine edge of stress that she'd been carrying around for the past month.

"I'm so sorry, sundari. I should have been there." He sounded like he wanted to jump through the phone line and hug her.

"No, no.? You needed to be there for your mom and your dad.? I've got David here.? And in 24 hours, I'll have you, too, and all will be right with the world again." David walked over and put his hand on her shoulder as she spoke, offering what comfort he could. She raised her hand and covered his, giving it a soft, grateful squeeze.

Once again, she could hear Daniel's smile. "Yes, all will be right. It's going to be a long twenty-four hours, though."

"I know," she said with a tiny frown.? "Wanna talk to David now?"

"Sure."

"Okay, just a sec," she said and handed the phone up to David.

David took the phone and held it up to his ear. "Hey Dan," he said. "How's your Dad?"

"He's doing well," Daniel replied. "The surgery went off without any complications. He's already protesting he's well enough to go back to work. Mother won't hear of it, of course."

She got up off the bed and went to the mini-bar.? She opened it and dug around inside for a moment, a smirk on her lips as she heard Danny's words through the phone.? "Like father, like son, I'm sure."

"That's great," David said, smiling a bit. "Uh...how about you? How're you doing?"

"I've been fine. It's been great to see my parents again. I waited far too long, honestly. David," he said. His tone turned serious then, "What happened? Why is Riley so worn out?"

$10 for a Milky Way bar?? Riley snorted and shut the small fridge.? She turned and went back to the bed, standing next to it.? Her brow rose and she gave David a little warning look ? don't answer that, she was telling him silently. David ignored that look and scowled. "It's that bastard Bishop," he said. "The case is such a f*ck up. We had to let him go."

"I can tell there's a lot more to it, but I'll let it go until I see you two in person. By the way, I'm glad you're coming, too, David."

"Thanks," David said. "I'm glad I am, too. We both need the rest." Riley growled softly and held her hand out for the phone.? "Give it," she said.

"Riley's going to bite me if I don't give the phone back now," David said grinning. "So here you go." He handed the phone to her with a little salute.

The sound of Daniel's laughter could be heard clearly by both of them. She stuck her tongue out at him for the salute and then sat down on the edge of the bed again.? "I want the record to reflect that I did not threaten to bite him," she said.

"So noted," Daniel said, chuckling.

"Good.? So, here's the details on the flight and stuff.? You ready?"

"Hang on, let me find something to write it down with." There was some muffled scraping and thumping, as if he were opening drawers, then, "Ready."

She gave him the flight number and arrival time.? A thought struck her.? "Danny?? Do your parents know about the Arrangement?"

"God, no," he said.

She gave a nervous chuckle.? "So, uh...how do we explain David?"? She glanced up at the man in question.? "Not that there is any explanation for him..." David casually flipped her off, lying back on the bed.

"Well...as a friend? It's not untrue."

She laughed and then poked him, her nail digging in between his ribs and tickling.? "Yeah, okay.? And do they know about Rhy'Din?"

There was a momentary pause as Daniel clearly heard David squirming and little gasp as Riley's finger hit a particularly ticklish spot. He snickered, then answered. "Yes, I've told them all about it. They told me they knew a few professors who'd sell a kidney to visit another world."

David slipped his arms around her waist and pulled her over backwards, hoping to catch her in mid-sentence. "Tell them they can come ba.. Ack!"? She landed on her back on top of David, head and shoulders on the bed on the opposite side of him, feet nearly straight up in the air.

"They can what?" Daniel asked, sounding a bit confused.

David snorted, and let out a little chuckle. Success. Riley struggled to sit up again, elbows maybe digging into his stomach and chest unnecessarily hard.? "They can come back with us if they want."? She turned a gimlet eye on David.? "Jerk." He grunted at the elbow, then made a kissy face at her.

Daniel laughed. "Sure, we can have a parade, too."

"Ooh, that sounds like a cool idea.? Maybe it'll help get me back into Dris's good graces."? She gave David a little salute of her own, a one-fingered salute, and then slipped off the bed.? "What time is it there?" she asked Danny. David clutched his heart in mock pain, writhing like he'd been shot.

"It's just after eight."

She rolled her eyes at him and then leaned against the wall between the door to the hallway and the door to the bathroom.? She was watching David.? "What have you been doing with your time?" she asked Danny. Seeing that she was eyeing him, David winked and slowly started pulling shirt off, flexing his stomach muscles. She made a tiny, unconscious noise and bit down on her lower lip.

"Just catching up with my parents, visiting a few a friends, nothing...what's that?"

"What's what?"? She was now glaring daggers at David.? She mouthed, "Stop it," at him. David grinned wickedly and pulled his shirt off entirely, raising his arms over his head and stretching luxuriously, every muscle in his arms and torso standing out in sharp relief.

"Did you say something, sundari?"

She bit down harder on her lower lip and resolutely turned away from him.? "No, I didn't say anything.? Uh...watched any football on the telly?"

"I've seen a few matches, actually," he replied, sounding a little confused.

David smirked and relaxed, admiring her rear...and making sure that it was obvious he was doing so if she happened to turn around. "Oh, yeah?? Isn't the World Cup this month or something?? Is England playing?"? She was desperately aware of David approaching the state of nakedness and the scent of his pheromones and like all men do at some time during their life, she was distracting herself with sports.

"I believe so, yes. Is there some reason we're discussing football, sundari?"

David decided it would be a good idea to get rid of his cumbersome jeans, and slid them down off his legs, now lying on the bed in just his boxers. She heard the zipper of David's jeans and risked a glance over her shoulder.? "Oh, Christ," she muttered and turned around again quickly.? "Uh...? What was that?"

"What's wrong?" Daniel asked.

"He's being mean," she answered, in a tone like that of a petulant child. David sat up and grabbed his bag, rummaging around in it for a moment, then held up his prize. It was Mr. Tie.

"David is? What's he doing?"

"He's uh...undressing."? Unable to resist, she risked another glance at David.? "Oh, no," she said softly, and like a moth to flame, turned all the way around to face David fully now.

Daniel let out an abrupt laugh. "Well, surely that's not so bad."

Seeing that she was looking again, David hooked a hand into the hem of his boxers and started to slide them down. She shut her eyes with a sudden gasp.? "But I'm trying to talk to you," she whined.

"You'll see me in person soon enough, my love. Go, have fun."

She made a little wanton noise, though for which of her boys it was intended was anyone's guess.? "I miss you," she said softly.? And then, even softer, "I love you."

"I miss you, too," he replied. "And I love you, very much. Tell David he'd better take care of you."

David was, by this time, entirely naked, with Mr. Tie wrapped around one hand. He was clearly quite happy to see to her care and keeping. "I will.? I'll see you tomorrow.? Bye, baby."? She hung up and opened one eye.? Then she tossed aside her phone and went straight into David's arms.

"I could never drive here.? I'd be on the wrong side of the road all the time," Riley said as Danny drove them from Heathrow Airport on the western fringes of London, northwest into the heart of the English countryside.

"You'd get used to it, sundari," he replied.? "There are plenty of Yanks living here that manage. It just takes some time."

She snorted.? "Yanks is it?? Is that what we are?" She glanced over her shoulder to David, sitting in the back seat of Danny's father's new Vauxhall Astra convertible.

"Well, technically, yes," Daniel said, chuckling.

David shrugged. "Yank's better than Chink."

"Or Jap," she added.? She reached out and laid her hand on Danny's thigh, still amazed that she was close enough to touch him.? "So tell me about where we're staying."

Daniel glanced over at her and smiled softly. He'd been missing her touch and her presence the entire time he'd been back in England. "Well, it's a former farm that's been converted into a bed and breakfast. It's got its own little valley in the Bucks Chilterns. It's quite gorgeous countryside, really."

She sighed happily and closed her eyes, laying her head on the headrest.? "It sounds wonderful.? Can we all make a promise to not talk at all about Rhy'Din the entire time?"

"I've already spent days explaining all about RhyDin to my parents, so I'm fine with not spending any more time on it," Daniel said.

"Suits me," David put in from the back.

"Perfect," she said softly.? "What can we do while we're here?? Stuff to see or do?? Is there a pool?? I brought my suit."

"No pool, I'm afraid. The weather's not really warm enough for outdoor pools most of the time. There are tons of hiking paths nearby in the Chilterns, though. There's also a nice pub only a ten-minute walk away. It's run by a lovely Nepalese family, interestingly enough."

"Ooh.? Walking through hills and then a pint at the local.? Yes, I approve of this.? Are we gonna get to see your parents?? Or is your dad still recovering and not up to visitors?"

"If it's a quick visit, I'm sure it will be fine. Mother will shoo us out when she thinks he's had enough. We can certainly spend some time with her, though."

She smirked.? "I can't wait.? I want to see the woman who raised you." She glanced into the back seat now.? "You're next, you know.? We need to go see your parents, too."

"Uh," David said. "They're pretty traditional."

She arched a brow.? "So?? I'm guessing Danny's parents are, too, and god only knows what Mama-san would do if we tried to tell her about the Arrangement.? Her head might explode."

"Yeah, well...not only that,? David replied. ?If my parents found out I was...dating...seeing...sleeping with... Christ, I don't even know what to call it.? Whatever you call it, if they find out I'm with a Japanese woman, they'll probably disown me. There's still a lot of hate for Japan in a lot of China."

"Oh.? Yeah.? There is that, huh."? She fell silent and chewed on her lower lip for a while, watching the cars passing...on the wrong side of the road.

Daniel asked them, "So what do you two think of the UK?"

"It's nice," David said. "Seems peaceful."

"I love it here,? Riley said. ?It's so quiet and green.? Reminds me a lot of the area outside Kyoto, where my grandparents lived."

Daniel smiled. "Glad to hear it. I'm still fond of this place. Ah, here we are," he said, turning onto a long narrow road lined with large chestnut trees. At the end of the road was the B&B itself.

Riley closed her eyes again as the setting sun was filtered through the canopy of leaves.? She parted her lips slightly, rolling the smell of the land around on her tongue.? "Horses...and deer, too," she said softly.? She could feel her blood rushing at the scent of game.? She looked sidelong at Danny, wondering if he felt it, too.

There was a hint of a feral gleam in his eyes when he looked over at her. "The deer come right up to the garden sometimes."

"Oh, my," she said softly, thinking there was the distinct possibility of venison in their future.

David snorted when he realized what they were talking about. "Think they'll like finding half-eaten deer around?"

"Half-eaten?? Are you kidding?? Riley asked. David answered her with a smirk.

They reached the end of the road and parked near the building. "Let's go," Daniel said, hopping out. "I got us their flat. It's more private, and has a kitchen of its own." Riley slid out of the car and pulled the seat forward for David, before going around to the back to grab her suitcase and bag.? David had made her unpack once he'd seen the amount of things she'd wanted to bring originally.? Then he very closely supervised as she repacked and fit her entire wardrobe for the four days into only one bag.? She had bitched and grumped and muttered blackly under her breath all the while, but was grateful when she didn't have to pay extra to check a bag at the airport.

David scooped out his single bag, and glanced over at her. "Bet you're glad now, huh?"

She made a sour face at him.? "Yeah, shut up."? She reached into the...? "Wait, Danny?? Is this the bonnet or the boot?"

"That's the boot. The front of the car is the bonnet," he said, grinning.

"Ah.? Thank you."? She reached into the boot and scooped out her suitcase and her bag, slinging both over her shoulder and stepping away from the car to look the place over.? It was green, quiet, cozy.? Danny had made a good choice.

Daniel led them to the B&B's flat and opened the door with the key he'd picked up before getting them from the airport. He stood aside, motioning them in.

"Oh, there's a fireplace," she said when she walked in.? She dropped her bags in the doorway and went over to the hearth. Kneeling down in front of it, and despite the relative warmth of the early summer evening, she began making a fire using wood from a small basket near the hearth.

"Going to curl up on the rug, too?" David asked, following her into the living room.? Meanwhile, Daniel picked up her bags and brought them into the bedroom.

The fire was laid and cheerfully warm.? She grinned up at David, kicked off her shoes and laid down on her side.

A little grin played over his lips. "Can I rub your belly?"

She moaned softly and turned onto her back, hiking her sleeveless shirt up, displaying her firm, taut belly.? She slitted her eyes, like a contented house cat, and began purring, even before he touched her. David reached out with both hands, laying them onto her stomach lightly before flexing his fingers, digging them into her hard muscles and relaxing, then digging again, much like a cat's kneading. As happened every single time he touched her, a little thrill of desire shot through him. She arched her back, hands sliding down her sides to her waist, where she made quick work of her shorts, pushing them down her legs and kicking them carefully away from the fire.? "Danny?" she called out.? "Where are you?"

"Right here," Daniel replied, coming out the bedroom. His eyebrows rose at the sight of her lying there already half-undressed. A little growl rose in his throat and he hurried over to sink down onto the floor next to her, reaching for her hand. She used his hand to pull him down closer to her and rose up a little, meeting his mouth and kissing him thoroughly, demonstrating just how much she'd missed him over the past five days. He kissed her like it'd been five months instead of five days, burying his hand in her hair and holding her mouth against his with a soft moan. David sat back, giving them some time together without crowding in.

She parted from his lips reluctantly and pressed her forehead against his.? "I missed you.? I forbid you to leave me again for this long."? She reached up and cupped his face.? "The three of us need to talk about something," she said a little louder and then sat back, folding her legs into a half-lotus.

Daniel let out a little sigh when she moved away, nodding. "I don't want to ever do it again, either." He glanced over at David, then back to her. "What's up?"

She, too, looked at David for a moment before looking back at Daniel.? "We...uh...talked about something the night before last and we need to know how you feel about it, too."

"You want David to move in with us, don't you?" he asked, smiling. It wasn't that hard to figure out, really, especially considering what happened the last time they'd had a conversation that started rather like this one. Not to mention Daniel knew his Jaguar pretty well.

Riley blinked and then darted another look at David, seeing the surprise echoed in his face.? She looked back at Daniel and nodded.? "Yeah.? That's right.? What do you think?"

"What, did you smell that?" David asked, surprised.

Daniel laughed. "No, no, I just know Riley," he answered David, then asked a question of his own. "Is this something you want, too, David? Would you be comfortable living in the same house with both of us?"

David was silent for a moment, then nodded. "Hell, I've been sleeping in your bed for the past few weeks already. I spend more time there than in my own. Can't see it being much different."

She looked back and forth between them, a slow smile breaking out as she heard their words.? "So, it's a yes then?"? She sounded and probably looked like a kid who'd just asked her parents if she could keep the stray puppy that had followed her home from school one day.

"It's a yes from me," said Daniel in a decent Piers Morgan impression.

She cracked up.? "And what does the Hoff have to say about it?"

"What?" said David. "I'm way cooler than the Hoff."

"But the only other choice is Sharon and I'm so her already."

"Actually, the Hoff is gone," said Daniel. "It's Howie Mandel now. He's much better. I've been watching it," he confessed.

"Oh, yeah, totally.? You can be Howie then, David."? She smirked at Danny.? "That bored without us, huh?"

"Absolutely. Lonely, too. No purring presence next to me." Daniel chuckled, then looked at David. That aforementioned purr started up again as she, too, looked in David's direction, awaiting his final verdict.

"If I can be Howie, I'm definitely in," David said, smirking a bit. "Long as I don't have to shave my head."

"No, that will not be required," she said and then threw herself at them both, hooking one arm around their shoulders and pulling them into a tight hug. Daniel laughed, squeezing her tight and purring loudly. David leaned into her too, not even minding how his shoulder was crushed up against Daniel's. If they were going to be living together, it would be stupid to be all squeamish about casual touching. She kissed David and then Danny and hugged them tightly again.? "I think we should keep David's place, just in case one of us gets sick of the other two and wants some alone time,? she said.

"Good," said David. "Since I practice there, too."

She let them go and sat back. She glanced towards the kitchen, idly wondering if there was food in there already or if they'd have to go shopping.? She was beginning to feel hungry; her stomach was vociferously reminding her that they hadn't paid extra for lunch on the plane. Finally, unable to resist the lure of food, she stood and padded silently on bare feet into the kitchen.

"There's food in the fridge already, pyara," Daniel said, hearing her stomach growl.

"Hurrah!"? She moved immediately to the fridge and pulled it open.? "Holy sh*t," she said quietly.? "The samosa faerie visited!"? She pulled out a plate covered with both potato and meat samosas. Doing so in turn uncovered a plate of foil packages.? She gasped and set aside the plate with the samosas without thought, reaching for the foil.? "Is this chicken in foil, Danny?"

"It is, indeed," he answering coming up behind her and planting a kiss on the back of her neck. "It had occurred to me that the two of you would be hungry after the flight and drive, so I put together a few things earlier this morning."

She shivered at the kiss and then set the plate in her hands down next to the samosas.? She hugged Daniel then and kissed him.? "You're the bestest boyfriend ever," she said quietly.

"I try," he said modestly, resting his head against her shoulder for a moment. Then he straightened up. "Come on, let's bring this stuff to the table and eat." She handed him the chicken and carried the samosas into the little dining nook between the kitchen and the living area.? She glanced over at David.? "Hungry?"

"I could eat," David said, coming over to join them.

"I don't understand that.? How can you just be all...lackadaisical about food?? It's food, for Pete's sake!? It's life.? And when Danny makes it, it's like...sex!"

"So eating this is like having sex with Dan? That explains a lot,? David quipped.

"Well, sure it is.? Why do you think I keep him around?"? She winked at Danny and grabbed a samosa, biting it in half and chewing contentedly.

"You only love me for my ingredients," Daniel said with a mock pout.

"And the way you ...uh... hmmm..." she said, her brow creasing as she wracked her brain for an innuendo concerning cooking.

"Handle your meat?" David suggested. He was, after all, the King of Innuendos. Riley had even taken to calling him The Todd after a character on a TV show.

She cracked up, nearly spraying David with a mouthful of half-masticated potato.? As it was, she choked and started coughing before standing and going to drink from the tap in the kitchen.

"Nice timing," Daniel commented. David took a short bow, smirking at Riley's reaction.

She took a deep breath and straightened before going back to the table and sitting down.? "So, have you tested the bed yet?" she asked Daniel, a question she'd asked him months earlier when they'd gone to Boston.

"Of course," he said, just like he had in Boston. "It's quite comfortable."

"Awesome."? She unwrapped a foil package, scooped up the contents and shoveled them into her mouth before standing and moving into the living area.? She paused, back to the boys who were still at the table, and glanced over her shoulder at them.

"Done already?" Daniel asked, glancing over at her.

She didn't answer him, just slipped her shirt off, tossing it to land atop her discarded shorts.? Then she winked at them, wearing nothing now but her bra, panties, a string of sea-glass beads, and of course Danny's ring.? "I haven't even started yet.? Both men stared at her, food forgotten. She grinned and reached behind her back, quickly unfastening her bra and dropping it to the floor as well.? She took another step closer to the bedroom door, hooking her thumbs in the leg holes of her panties and tugging them down her legs before stepping out of them.? "Are either of you joining me or am I going to do this alone?"

There was a clatter as a pair of chairs fell, knocked over in their haste to get to the bedroom. She giggled and flopped down on the bed, reaching for them both.

"How oft do they their silver bowers leave
To come to succour us that succour want!"

~ Edmund Spenser, "Faerie Queene"

Riley had managed to slip away from the boys to spend some time alone. She loved them both ? well, loved Danny and lusted for David ? and knew that they meant well and cared for her deeply, but she hadn't spent more than five minutes alone in more than two months and the lure of the quiet, green English countryside was exerting its siren song on her. So on the morning of their third day at the B&B, while Danny was on the phone with his mother making plans for the three of them to go to his parents' home for dinner, and David was busy in the garden practising his bah-whatever, Riley sneaked out the back way as only a silent, stealthy Cat could. She'd had the presence of mind to leave behind a note that said, ?Out for a walk in the woods to the west.?

She headed due west, across a field of something that might have been wheat or hay. The valley that the B&B sat it was lined on three sides by thickly wooded hills and it was these trees that drew her, tempted her, called to her. She'd spent too long in the desert; she'd been raised in a similar landscape, green grass, thick woods, streams and ponds, and she found she missed it terribly. Soon, she left the fields and the other marks of civilisation behind and entered the trees with a feeling like coming home.

She had her iPod strapped to her arm, but it seemed somehow sacrilegious to drown out the birdsong and the soughing of the wind in the trees and the buzzing of the cicadas with music, even if it was mostly blues guitar by Stevie Ray Vaughn. The sounds of nature would restore her, the sights and scents of the forest would rebuild her centre and bring back the balance that was so missing inside her.

She moved silently through the trees, winding her way between grand tree trunks that were three or four of her in circumference and tiny saplings that were as slender as her wrist. Feeling slightly self-conscious and really glad she was alone, she chose a tree seemingly at random and wrapped her arms around it, pressed her cheek into its rough bark, and gave it a great, big hug. The tree was a tall, stately oak and she couldn't get her arms around the girth of its trunk. She felt as though she was hugging a giant. She thought she could hear the sap rushing through the tree, and a sound like the laughter of an ancient and amused creature. She closed her eyes, her cheek still pressed tightly to the trunk and thought for a brief moment that she could feel the branches of the tree lowering to hug her back.

She opened her eyes and froze. There were branches hugging her, bark-covered arms with fingers that were lined with oak leaves wrapped tightly around her. She must have made some tiny noise of surprise and fear, for the arms slowly raised, going back to their place in the sky. She took a shaky step back and looked up. A face, an old, wizened woman's face with apple cheeks and a wide, benevolent smile looked back at her. Riley knew in an instant that she was in the presence of a Faerie, but there was nothing of the mind-numbing, bowel-cramping, ice-water-in-the-veins kind of fear she'd felt before when faced with the Fae.

?No way,? Riley whispered. ?No freaking way. This has got to be another dream,? she reasoned. Otherwise, why wasn't she afraid?

?Why a dream, child?? the tree woman asked in a voice that had seen centuries. ?Why not reality??

?Trees don't talk. They don't have faces or arms. They don't hug people.?

?Ah, child. You are not a person. You are special, aren't you?? the tree woman answered, the smile growing even wider, more loving, more gentle.

Riley's eyes narrowed at that. Her first instinct was to deny the words. She was a person. But then good sense caught up with her and reminded her that she turned into a great big Jaguar once a month. She gave the tree one of her patented lopsided smiles. ?I suppose I am,? she said.

?Nay, child,? the tree responded. ?I speak not of your dual nature, though be certain it is worthy of my respect. I speak of older blood that courses through your veins. Wild blood, Fae blood.?

Riley shook her head slowly. ?No,? she said firmly, but respectfully. ?I think you're mistaken. There are no Faeries in my family.?

The tree laughed, a sound like the hoof beats of a herd of running deer or a stream dancing over rocks in its bed. ?Child, have you not always felt an affinity for the forest?? it said. ?Have you not always found rest and succor in the trees? There is wild blood in you, child, and no mistake. Else why would the Summer Lady be here for you??

Riley whirled around and dropped into a defensive crouch, her lips skinning back from suddenly elongated fangs, a low dangerous growl rumbling forth from her throat.

A woman was standing some ten feet away. She wasn't tall, nor was she short. She wasn't fat, nor was she thin. She was, in fact, very plain and average-looking. One's eyes would simply slide over her if she was standing in a crowd, moving on and instantly forgetting her. She was truly unremarkable. Riley's nostrils flared delicately as she tested the air. Nothing ? no scent rolled off the woman's body. In fact, if Riley's eyes had been closed, she wouldn't have known the woman was there at all.

?Calm, child,? the tree said softly. ?The Seelie Queen means those of her blood no harm.?

Riley straightened slowly and let her teeth go back to Human. Again, even though she was standing in the presence of a Queen of the Faeries, she felt no fear, only a deep curiosity. ?You're Titania?? she asked the woman.

?Yes, Riley Brighid,? the woman said. Her voice wasn't so unremarkable. It sounded like sunshine glinting off water, children's laughter as they ran through a lawn sprinkler, and the cold, sweet taste of Popsicles on a hot July afternoon. The Power the Seelie Queen put into the speaking of Riley's Name made the hairs on the back of Riley's neck stand straight up. ?The loss of your brother, the fire mage, stung me and my Court deeply, as did the loss of your child.? The Summer Lady's eyes flooded with tears as she spoke, and Riley nearly staggered and fell to the forest floor under the weight of the Queen's sadness. She reached out to keep herself upright and her hand was caught by a branch that carefully lowered her to the ground. Titania moved forward and sat carefully, daintily, making Riley feel as graceful as a pregnant hippopotamus on roller skates. Tears spilled down the Queen's cheeks and fell silently away like tiny crystals to the ground.

?Thank you,? Riley said softly, rapidly blinking away her own tears. ?Is what she -? meaning the tree at her back, ?said true? Do I have Fae blood??

Titania laughed and Riley wanted to laugh right along with her. It was as if the clouds had rolled away from the face of the sun. ?Always blunt and right to the point, aren't you?? the Fae said. ?No time for pleasantries, no desire to make small talk. Very well. Yes, you have sidhe blood, Seelie blood.? Riley's eyes grew wide and she shook her head in denial. ?Oh, but it's true, child,? Titania continued. ?Your four-times-great grandfather fell in love with a woman of the Summer Court. I Saw what the union would bring, so I allowed it, allowed the woman to become mortal for a year so she could love Cormac and to bear his child, P?draig.? The Queen paused as Riley gasped. These names sparked recognition of looking over genealogical charts with her grandmother.

?Her name was listed as Brighid O'Reilly. I'm named for her,? Riley said softly. ?She died during the Famine, though. That's why Cormac and the baby came...went to Boston.?

?She did not die, Riley. Her year amongst the mortals was over. She returned to the Court, though it broke her heart to do so.? Titania sounded sad and troubled by the loss.

?You Saw what the union would bring? What does that mean??

?I Saw you, child,? Titania said gently. ?I Saw your life. I Saw what you were destined for. The Angel, The Cat, and The Mage. I Saw that you would be at the heart of an eternal struggle between the Light and the Dark.?

Riley closed her eyes, unwilling to accept this. She felt like some character in a Tolkien novel. ?That can't be true.? She opened her eyes again, this time allowing the pain and frustration and anger that had been piling up over the past year to show in her eyes. ?Hell won. The Dark Court won. John's dead. Rhys doesn't have a clue who he is. Christ, I barely survived. All that...that bullsh*t about destiny and our vital roles to fulfill in stopping the end of the world is just that ? utter bullsh*t.?

Titana's hand reached out and she placed it over Riley's heart. Riley could feel the heat of the Seelie's hand even through her shirt and the simple touch brought her a small sense of comfort, a hint of what could come. ?You have been badly wounded, Riley,? the Queen whispered. ?And you have found neither respite nor rest from your pains.?

?I'll survive. I always have. It's what I do.?

?But child, monsters are born of pain and grief and anger. It has already begun, hasn't it? The entropy mage withers in your gaol. The gossip mongers strike at you from behind their smiles. You have forgotten your true purpose in accepting the burden of ensuring justice. You have let your anger and pain weaken you. Let me help you, child. Let me give you succor. Let me heal you. Your burden is so heavy.?

Something inside Riley snapped and her will crumbled, but it was nothing like what Maeve had done in her dream. It was as if Riley's heart finally won out the struggle with her head and forced her to allow Titania to help her. Riley nodded and closed her eyes, bowed her head and whispered, "Yes." The Queen pressed her hand harder over Riley's chest and it was like a dam had burst. Scarlet rage, indigo fear, pale blue sadness, putrid green guilt poured out of her, coursed through her body like lightning, searing and painful and beautiful all at once.

After the tide of colours receded, Riley was left with a calm, deep, quiet stillness inside her head. It slowly spread out into her body and down into her limbs, like sunshine on a lazy summer Sunday. Riley's pains and cares vanished, leaving her filled with peace, feeling as though she were floating in a pool of warm water. She slept, relaxed in body and soul for the first time in a year.

Only the sun's position low in the western sky and the elongated shadows cast by the trees indicated how long Riley had been asleep. She still felt warm, peaceful, perfectly relaxed. The fears and the worries were still there, but they seemed somewhat diminished, or perhaps she was just stronger now, more able to deal with them. Her head rested on something soft and warm, and she suspected that Titania had let her rest her head in the Queen's lap while she slept.

When she opened her eyes, she saw that Titania had dropped her glamour while the Cat slept. Now Riley could see her in all of her otherworldly, ethereal beauty and it tore at her heart. Gone was the Plain Jane creature Titania had been before Riley had fallen asleep. She'd been replaced by a woman who would make the girls who graced the covers of magazines run and hide their ugly faces. Her hair was still brown, but now it was the brown of sleek, glossy Thoroughbred horses. The Queen's eyes had changed, too. The irises were now triplicate rings of blue- the outer ring was the summer sky above the Arizona desert, the middle ring was polished azurite, and the inner ring cornflowers. Titania smiled and Riley wanted to weep at her good fortune in being allowed to gaze upon this Botticelli come alive.

?It will last, child,? the Queen said softly. Riley shifted, sitting up slowly, her own seemingly unremarkable caramel-brown eyes locked onto those wondrous orbs of blue. ?The peace you feel, the warmth and the strength. It will last until you do something that runs contrary to yourself. And you run the risk of doing that every day, don't you?? Riley looked away, shame and embarrassment welling up in her breast, but the Seelie reached out and caught her chin and pulled her head to face the Fae once more. ?No, child. It is not a terrible thing you have done. You have acted from a place of good intentions, of love, of respect, and of altruism. But take care that these things don't become the heavy-handed machinations of a despot.?

?You sound like Lucien,? Riley said softly.

The Queen smiled. ?He is a wise man, child. One whose advice you would do well to heed. One of whom you need not make an enemy. Take the steps you need to ensure you remain in his good graces. You have other wrongs to right as well, Riley Brighid. I need not renumerate them for you.?

Riley nodded and rose, feeling that her audience with the Summer Lady was at its end. The Queen, too, stood, but reached for Riley's hand and pressed an object into it. Riley frowned softly and held her hand up to her face, examining whatever Titania had just given her. It was a necklace ? a silvery-coloured chain, from which hung a small cork-stoppered phial wound with silvery wire. It held a tiny amount of golden, sparkly sand. ?What is this? Faerie dust?? Riley asked without thinking.

The Queen laughed, that rich melodic laugh that poured across Riley's skin like honey. ?No, child. It is a one-time boon. Smash the glass and a Seelie warrior will appear. But use it wisely. There will be no second time.?

?Thank you,? Riley said as she slipped the necklace on. The phial hung down, nearly weightless, between her breasts. She could feel it there, nonetheless, like a tiny ray of sunshine above her heart, warming her. Titania took a single step forward and placed a gentle kiss against the centre of Riley's forehead. ?Remember all that has transpired here,? the Queen said. ?And one final piece of advice, if I may?? Riley nodded and then Queen continued. ?Be not afraid of love. It is the Mother's greatest gift to us all. You are extremely fortunate to have the love, devotion, and respect of many people, Riley Brighid. Honour those gifts and return them without trepidation and without reserve.?

?I will,? Riley said softly and glanced down at the phial. When she looked up once more, Titania had disappeared and the tree had returned to normal. Riley closed her eyes and wrapped a hand around the tiny Faerie gift and then turned, headed back to her boys.

"Riley's been gone kinda long," David said.? It had been almost four hours, according to his watch, which he'd set for local time.? He was sitting on the couch with Dan, watching a soccer, or football as they called it here, match. Daniel glanced at the time, as well. "Well, it's rather relaxing to go walking in the woods, and there's no question she could use the time to unwind. Still, you're right, this seems like a bit much. I should go find her," he finished, standing up.

"Want me to come?" David asked.

"No, you should wait here, just in case I somehow miss her, unlikely as that is," Daniel answered, heading for the door.

David started to protest that he didn't want to sit around waiting, then reconsidered.? It was the smart thing to do.? Then there was the whole super-kitty nose thing.? Dan would have a lot less trouble finding Riley's trail than he would.? So, he just accepted it and nodded.? "Right."

"Be back shortly," Daniel said as he left. He turned towards the woods in the west, and the note had indicated, and set off at a modest pace, nostrils flaring as he searched for her scent, which he found quickly enough. His pace increased, now that he had the trail, all senses alert and searching.

Still feeling somewhat out of sorts from her encounter with the Summer Lady and the dryad, Riley emerged from the treeline, only to spot Danny coming at her from the direction of the B&B.? She waved and picked up her pace, jogging easily towards him across the fields.

Well, that was easy, Daniel thought with a bit of relief when he saw Riley come into sight. He smiled and waved back. "We were starting to wonder," he said when she got close enough.

She gave him a sheepish smile when she heard his words.? "I'm sorry.? I...uh...sorta fell asleep.? And oh my god, do I have a story for you guys."? She took his hand, lacing her fingers with his.? "Is David still at the farm?"

He squeezed her hand lightly, happy to be touching her. "A story? Yes, just in case you came back while I was out looking." As he spoke, his nostrils twitched. There was a strange scent on her, one he'd never smelled before. It smelled like sunshine, green plants...summer, but more so. Like the distilled essence of summer.

She smirked a little at the sniffing.? "A story.? But I don't want to tell it twice, so c'mon."? She took off at a slightly faster jog, long legs eating up the ground easily. Daniel matched her pace smoothly, glancing over at her occasionally. She seemed a lot more relaxed now, too. This was a good thing, in his opinion. At their pace, it didn't take very long to make it back to the B&B. Riley reached the door and pulled it open, waiting for Daniel to go inside before following him in.? She went to the living area, gave David a "Soccer?? Seriously?" look and then switched off the TV.? "Sit," she said to Danny.

David looked up when Dan came back in, followed closely by Riley.? His reply to her look was a shrug and a nod in Daniel's direction, since he'd been the one to start watching it first.?

"Brain washing the hockey fan, Danny?? Turning him to the dark side of sports?"

Daniel sat obediently, and looked up at her. "Of course. It's all part of my master plan." He grinned over at David. "You've done well, my young apprentice."

David snorted. "Thanks."

She laughed and then shook her head.? "I already apologised to Danny, but I need to apologise to you, too," she said, looking at David.? "I fell asleep out there."

"In the woods?" David asked. "Is that a Cat thing?"

"Sometimes, yeah,? she answered. ?But in this case, no.? I...uh...? I met a couple of Faeries out there."

Daniel Tej

Date: 2010-07-02 16:21 EST
"You what?" David exclaimed, sitting up quickly from the slouch he'd been in.

"You met Faeries out there?" Daniel echoed in surprise. Her usual reaction to any sort of dealings with the Fae was near-frozen terror, and she was showing none of that right now.

"Yeah, but hang on.? Let me explain before you mount a faerie-hunt.? They were Seelie Fae.? The Queen of the Seelie Court in fact."? She looked back and forth between their faces, both etched with the same lines of concern, surprise, and shock, and felt an overwhelming surge of love, yes love, for them both.

"Seelie?" David said, looking a bit confused.? He remembered her mentioning Unseelie Fae as being the ones who'd tortured her, but never any mention of Seelie.? Obviously, from her reaction, they were some kind of good Faeries, that much was easily deduced.

Daniel relaxed a bit when she mentioned the Seelie. He'd talked with her extensively about the Faeries, so hearing that she'd met with the nicer Court was very good, if surprising, news. "Why did the Queen come to you?" he asked. He also knew enough about Faeries to know that didn't happen often.

She swallowed and started pacing after Danny's question.? "She uh...she says I have Fae blood."? She glanced sidelong at them to see how they received this knowledge, while continuing her pacing.

"Is that why they were after you?" David asked.? To him, it didn't really matter if she was part Fae.? He'd already dealt with and accepted the fact that she wasn't human.? What kind of not human didn't change anything.

Daniel was silent for a moment, digesting that unexpected bit of news. "Well, that certainly explains why she came to you," he finally said.

She shook her head and stopped pacing for a moment. She'd forgotten that David wasn't familiar with the societal structure of Faeries.? "See, there's three kinds of Faeries - Seelie, Unseelie, and Courtless," she began, speaking to David.? Most of this would be a refresher for Danny.? "The Unseelie are the bastards who have been hounding me because of a deal that was made between their Queen and some demons.? If you want, I'll explain that to you later."

"Go on," David said, sitting back again.

"The Unseelie are obviously evil, mean, nasty f*ckers.? They're known as the Dark Court and the Winter Court.? The Seelies, on the other hand, they're known as the Light Court and the Summer Court.? They're slightly less evil, mean, nasty f*ckers.? In fact, they can be quite helpful to mortals, but at their core, they're still Fae and they're still self-serving. Until today, I've never had any dealings with the Summer Court.? My...brother, John, though.? He was a friend of the Queen's."? She looked away for a moment, sadness and grief lining her face.? She took a deep breath and continued.? "Titania, the Seelie Queen, told me today that my...four? five? whatever times great-grandmother was one of the Summer Court.? She was made mortal for a year because she fell in love with my however-many-times-great-grandfather and wanted to bear his child."

"Huh," David said.? That was a lot of information to absorb at once.? Good thing cops were used to getting a ton of facts dumped on them.? "So...she just dropped in for a chat, then?" Daniel listened quietly to the exchange, curious to know as well.

She smiled.? "Yeah, kinda.? I guess.? She gave me two gifts, and some advice."

"What kind of gifts?" Daniel asked, remembering stories about accepting presents from Faeries.

"What kind of advice?" David asked, having not heard those stories.

She chuckled softly at the barrage of well-meaning questions.? "Well, the second gift she gave me was this -" she reached inside her shirt and tugged out the crystal phial and held it out the them.? "She said it's like a...faerie Bat Signal.? I just smash the glass and a Seelie Warrior comes to the rescue.? It's a one-time only deal, though."

Daniel's eyebrows went up at the sight and the explanation of the necklace. "And she asked for nothing in return?"

She shook her head.? "I know, huh?" she said, addressing the unspoken skepticism in Daniel's question. "The first gift she gave me is a little harder to explain.? She uh..." she broke off, forehead creasing in thought as she searched for an explanation.? "I guess she healed me."

Daniel Tej

"Healed you...of what?" Daniel asked.

"Everything.? The pain and guilt and fear and rage and sadness I've been feeling for the past year or so.? She...she touched me, here," and pressed her hand over her heart, "and I felt like...lightning coursing through me and this big...rainbow of colours spewed out of me and every negative thing I've been carrying around since Patrick died...felt less.? I feel peaceful, at ease, stronger than I have in a very long time."

Daniel nodded slowly. "I can feel and smell how relaxed you are. I thought maybe it was just from the vacation, but clearly not." He smiled. "If I ever happen to meet Titania, she'll get a big 'Thank you' from me for that."

David nodded his agreement.? Whatever this Faerie Queen wanted, she'd clearly done Riley a big favor.

She smiled softly and finally stopped pacing.? She dropped bonelessly to the ground and sat lotus-style in front of them.? "I want to trust that the gifts are given out of a true concern for one of her blood.? But...I'm worried that accepting them like I did is gonna come back and bite me in the butt, you know?"

"You think that by accepting the gifts, you're now in debt to the Queen?" David asked, trying to sort out the issue.

"Yeah, it's the old Celtic law of Reciprocity.? An eye for an eye, etc."

"And there's no way to know what she might want," Daniel said. The motives of Faeries were all but unguessable to mortal minds.

"Yeah.? So...? I think I'm in debt to both Courts now," she said softly. Daniel growled softly. "Seems to me that the Unseelie Court should owe you now, after all they've done," he said.

"Yeah, but reason does not figure into the Dark Court's vocabulary."? She was still fidgeting with the phial, watching the dust or whatever it was in there pour from one end to the other.

"Isn't there some kind of protection you can get?" David asked.? "Some kind of anti-Faerie shield or something?"

She laughed, but then sobered.? "You know...we're in the heart of Faerie country here.? I'm sure someone's gotta know something about a charm or something else I could carry with me."

"I'm sure there have to be people in Rhy'Din, too, who know enough about Faeries to know how to protect against them, too," Daniel added.

She nodded and then looked down at her hand...her left hand.? It was bare.? She'd taken Daniel's ring off before she'd showered earlier that day and hadn't apparently put it back on.? She looked back up at Daniel.? "My ring?? It's not silver.? What is it made of?"

"The ring? It's stainless steel, I believe," Daniel said, raising a brow in surprise.

"Steel is iron, right?? Refined iron?"

"Yes..." Daniel said, then got it. "Oh! Yes, of course. Cold Iron is the bane of Faeries."

"It is, huh?" David said, thinking about the steel-jacketed bullets in his pistol.

She held up her hand, showing it to them.? "I wonder if it's a coincidence that I'm not wearing it now.? I've worn it every single day since you've given it to me."

"When Faeries are involved, coincidence seems to go out the door," Daniel replied. "I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Titania influenced you subtly to leave it off."

She nodded and chewed her lower lip.? "See?? Self-serving.? I think I'm gonna start carrying a knife.? A long, stainless-steel knife."

"Why not a nice stainless steel gun with some nice steel-jacketed bullets?" David asked.

"Guns are so inelegant.? They require no finesse or skill."

"Is that so? Would you care to prove that at the range?" David shot back.

"Oh, god.? This isn't going to be another one of those challenges where I let you beat me, is it?"

"Let me...? I held back on your lovely ass," David pointed out.

"Held back?? Was I human the entire time?? Did I try to eat your face?" Daniel looked back and forth between the two of them, trying not to laugh.

David waved that off.? "You'd never have touched me if I hadn't let you.? The only time I even initiated an attack was that feint to your nose.? You've seen me practice.? If I'd gone all out, it would have been over in seconds." He folded his arms and sat back smugly.? She knew damn well how outclassed she was...not that he expected her to admit it.

She gave him a dramatic rolling of the eyes.? "Yeah, whatever.? Because you're a man, and you have a fragile male ego, I'll allow you to continue with your delusions."

"Are you children done?" Daniel asked, chuckling.

"Only if he is," Riley said petulantly.

"She started it," David said.

Riley snorted. "How old are you again?"

"Twelve, same as you," David said and chuckled just a bit.? "Okay," he said, "Seriously.? I really do think you should consider carrying a gun, for one main reason.? Distance.? You don't have to let someone get close enough to touch you, like you do with a knife. I can teach how to handle it, if you need it."

Riley looked over at Daniel, a brow arched.

Daniel glanced over at David, then back at Riley. He nodded. "You've been attacked so many times, sundari. Maybe we let our nature fool us into thinking every threat can be met with tooth and claw. I trust David's judgment, his experience in these matters. If carrying a gun might save you from getting hurt, I'm all for it." He started to say more, then stopped and shook his head. He couldn't even put into words how much it would hurt him if she were seriously injured for lack of a weapon.

She made a sour face.? "I hate guns.? I really, really do.? And yes, I know, guns don't kill people, people kill people, etc.? But..."? She trailed off and shook her head.? "But if you think I should carry one... Can it be small?? And maybe sexy, too?"

"Of course, it can be both.? And for the record, women with guns are totally hot," David said.

She snorted.? "Oh, my god.? You are a dog, you know that, right? So, you're both okay with the idea of me carrying around a gun."

"I wouldn't have suggested it if I didn't think it was a good idea," David said seriously.

"Danny?? You're comfortable with this idea?"

"Of course. You won't be packing silver bullets, after all," the Leopard answered with a chuckle.

She took a deep breath and blew it out slowly.? "This goes against the Path, you realise.? What kind of Buddhist would I be if I carry around a weapon?"

"One who understands her job is very dangerous," David said.? "Besides, you remember I was taught weapons by a Buddhist, right?"

She sighed, realising that she was now out of excuses.? "Fine.? But you have to teach me the right way, okay?? And you have to be patient with me and realise that I hate guns."

"First we'll have to do is cure you of that attitude.? You can't get good at anything you hate."

She made another sour face and then pulled her knees up under her chest and wrapped her arms around her shin.? "They scare me," she said softly.

David nodded.? "Good. A little healthy fear is the perfect way to start.? It prevents stupid mistakes.? I'd be more worried if guns didn't scare you at all."

She smiled softly and then nodded.? "Fine.? I guess I'll put myself into your capable hands.? And you know that Danny will eat your liver with fava beans if you get me killed, right?"

"You like being in my hands anyway," David pointed out.? "Of course I won't get you killed, it'll be fine."

"Promise?"? She was displaying a rare vulnerability here, and it made her more than slightly uncomfortable.

David put his hand on his heart. "I swear."

She nodded slowly, eyes moving back and forth between her boys' faces.? "Okay.? So...do I have to carry it in my bag?? Or do I get one of those cool little holsters that I stick down the back of my jeans?"

"We can figure out the details of carrying later," David said.

"Okay."? She rose to her feet and headed into the kitchen.? She was starving.? Big shock, huh? Both men rose and followed her in the direction of the kitchen.? "Do you want to go out for dinner?" David asked.

She opened the fridge and spied a bowl of peaches.? "Ooh," she said softly and grabbed one out.? She took a huge bite and found it to be wickedly juicy.? Like roll down your chin and hand juicy.? "I'm good with whatever," she said, but with her mouth full of peach, it sounded more like, " 'M goof mif wuteffer."

That got a laugh from even the normally taciturn David.? "Goof indeed," he said.

"Wait, wait," Daniel said.

Riley paused, her mouth open, half-eaten peach nearly to her mouth.? "What?"

"We're supposed to be meeting my parents for dinner. I'd totally forgotten, what with Faerie encounters and gun lessons."

She blinked, her eyes growing wide.? "No way.? Now?? Tonight?"

"Well, yes. That's what I was talking to Mother about when you left."

She looked down at her clothing - running shorts, a sports bra, and running shoes.? "I should probably shower and change, huh?"

Daniel looked her up and down. "You look perfect to me, but yes, probably."

David seconded that 'perfect' opinion with a little wolf-whistle.

She rolled her eyes and walked away from them, headed to the bathroom and still carrying that peach.

The three of them were on the way to Daniel's parents' house, with Daniel driving his father's car again.? The ride was a little over half an hour, which gave Daniel plenty of time to prepare Riley and David for tonight's dinner.? "They'll probably be making something very English for dinner," he was saying.? "I think I'm more interested in Indian food than they are.? They were born here, though, so I suppose it's not all that strange," he finished, smiling.

"Hmmm," Riley said thoughtfully.? "Very English food scares me.? It has weird names, like toad-in-a-hole and Spotted Dick.? And there's always gravy.? Like all over everything."

Daniel laughed, nodding.? "I'm sure they'll let you put your own gravy on, though.? I expect Mother will make a roast or something of that sort.? Large portions of meat," he said, grinning.

"Oh, well, in that case, yay very English food!"? She glanced over her shoulder at David.? "Will we get traditional Chinese from Mama Lo?"? She was still pushing for a visit with David's parents and was beginning to think that maybe the three of them should go back to Boston in the fall as well.

David snorted.? "Traditional Chinese screaming, probably.? Maybe traditional Chinese pottery being thrown."

"Because of me?" Riley asked softly.

David answered, "You, and me for picking you."

She sighed and turned around to face forward.? "So...no visits to the Lo household anytime soon."

"It's for the best," David agreed.

She grumbled quietly, unhappy with the answer but determined not to start a fight over it.? She glanced at Danny, watching him for a moment as he drove.? "Will I have to behave perfectly?? I can, you know.? I have very good manners."

"Well, I'd certainly appreciate it if you didn't blow your nose in the linens and eat with your hands," Daniel answered.? "I've told Mother and Father quite a bit about you already, and I would really rather they liked you."

She giggled.? "It's kinda too bad we're not having Moroccan food.? Then I really could eat with my hands and no one would look askance at me.? So...any topics of conversation that are off limits?? Politics?? Religion?? Are they Hindi?? Do I have to wear a sari?? I will, you know.? I think they're gorgeous."

"No, you don't have to wear a sari," Daniel said.? "What you've got on is perfectly lovely.? If you start talking about politics, be prepared to hear quite a bit.? Mother's quite interested in the topic.? They're not Hindi, my great-grandparents converted to the CoE when they fled to England from India at the turn of the century.? They wanted to fit in better."

"CoE?? That's...Anglican, right?? Catholic light?? Well, I'll skip religious discussions in that case.? I don't know much about Christianity.? Politics, though.? I'll assume they're liberals?"

"Relax, pyara," Daniel said.? If the babbling wasn't enough of a giveaway, the increasing scent of nervousness rising off of her was.? "Just be yourself.? I'm positive they're going to love you."

She nodded and took a deep breath.? She closed her eyes and sought her centre, remembering the feeling of calm, relaxed power that had been restored to her this afternoon.? When it was solid once more, she opened her eyes and reached to lay her hand atop Danny's thigh.? "I'm sorry.? I'm freaking out over meeting them.? I've only met one...uh...boyfriend's parents before, and his mother hated me.? Actually, hate isn't a strong enough word for the feelings she had towards me."

Daniel's hand dropped from the steering wheel to rest atop hers for a moment, squeezing gently.? "I can't imagine what mother wouldn't want someone as smart, successful, and beautiful as you for their son.? This other boyfriend's mother clearly had judgment deficiencies."

"It was Andy's mother.? The truth of the matter is that we were too alike and apparently she wanted someone a little less...um...opinionated."

"Someone who wouldn't mouth back at her, huh?"? David asked.

She gave him a glare over her shoulder.? "Shut up, you." David gave her a smirk, a little salute and then went back to watching the countryside. "I'm gonna cram that salute right up your butt one of these days," she said, thus proving the reason behind Mrs Gavin hating her to be valid. She relaxed...somewhat...and looked out of the car at the passing scenery.? "Is there much call for ballet and or yoga teachers in Oxford?" she asked, seemingly out of the blue.

Daniel glanced over at her. "I can't say as I have ever looked into it, honestly."

"Did David explain to you the dog's job I've done of Bishop's case?" she asked him, borrowing a phrase from his lexicon.

"No, he hasn't said anything of the sort," he replied, looking back at David briefly.? "He doesn't think you did much wrong."

She made a sour face and crossed her arms over her chest defensively.? "Well, tell that to the sodding magistrate who released him.? And to Lucien and to Dris, too, while you're at it.? I have this horrible feeling that I'm going to get canned once we're home."

"That seems unlikely," Daniel said.? "You've done a lot of good things for the Watch as well.? Besides, wouldn't it reflect badly on the governor if he fired the person he hand-picked after a single mistake, large or not?"

"Or it could look better.? Taking out the trash before it begins to stink sort of thing."? She turned sideways in her seat so that she could see them both without straining her neck.? "David...? What sort of relationship did you have with the DA's office while you were on the Force in San Fran?"

"I didn't have much of one," he answered.

"Gee, that's helpful," she said flatly.? "Okay, let me go at this at another angle.? Do you remember what you said to me the night we had that big fight while taking Bishop Number Two to the morgue?"

"Yes..."

"About how DAs don't apprehend criminals?"

David nodded.? "Right."?

"Well...you're right," she said softly.? "DAs, which I am basically now, don't get involved with apprehension or any sort of police work.? That's well...that's the police's job.? The DA's job is to prosecute, based on whatever evidence you police sorts bring us."

"That's true here," David said, waving a hand at the world around them.? Meaning Earth, not RhyDin.

"It needs to be true there, as well.? I need to separate myself and the MoJ from the Watch.? I need to turn over the care and keeping of the Watch to someone else."

David was silent for several minutes, considering.? Finally, he nodded.? "You're right.? If there's ever going to be something resembling a real system of justice in that city, they'll have be separate."?

She gave him a wry smirk.? "How many times in the beginning did you shout at me for not allowing you to do your job because I was too busy doing it for you?"

"A few," David answered, giving her a little smile.

"Yeah.? I'll pitch the idea to Dris, provided he doesn't can me, when we get home."? She turned back to face front again, and scrunched down in her seat a bit.? "Are we there yet?"

"Not much longer," Daniel answered.? He glanced over at her.? She seemed more contemplative than anything else, which was much better than nervous about meeting his parents or worried about being fired. After about five more minutes, they arrived at the Tejs' house.? Daniel parked the car on the street next to the house and hopped out.? "Here we are," he said, gesturing towards the house.

Riley ORourke

Date: 2010-07-06 19:59 EST
She stood on the walk for a moment, looking up at the house.? It was a three-story, attached, brick facade town house.? It looked exceedingly English to her exceedingly American eyes.? The tiny front garden was overflowing with climbing roses and the heady scent of the flowers made her nose tickle.? She moved up to stand next to Danny and curled her arm through his, still staring up at the house.? "You grew up here?" she asked softly.

"From about fifteen, yes," he answered, leaning lightly against her for a moment before leading them towards the door. She followed along behind him, a feeling of panic rising in the pit of her stomach.? "This is ridiculous," she muttered.? After all, she'd faced down juries, hostile witnesses, vengeful Lycans, demons, and psychotic faeries.? Surely meeting her boyfriend's parents wouldn't be anything as scary as that, right?

As they approached the door, it swung open, revealing a tiny woman with very Indian-looking features.? She was an inch or two under five feet tall, and very slim.? She wore a pleated skirt and a matching sweater set. "Come in, come in," she said, holding the door wide.?

Daniel lead them inside, disengaging his arm from Riley's in order to give his mother a quick hug.? Then he said, "Mother, this is Riley."?

She smiled down - way down - at Danny's mother and extended her hand.? "Mrs Tej, I'm so happy to meet you," she said sincerely.

"Please, call me Margaret," Daniel's mother said, taking Riley's hand in both of hers and smiling.? "I'm delighted to finally meet you.? I must say, you're even lovelier in person than on the telly.? Taller, too," she finished, with more than a hint of humor. David's eyebrow rose, and he looked curiously at the back of Riley's head.? They'd seen her on TV?? She'd never mentioned being an international celebrity.

Riley flushed a little and nodded.? "Well, it's probably helped by four-inch heels," she said a little wryly.

"They're lovely shoes," Margaret said.? Then she turned to David, holding out her hand.? "And you must be David.? I'm glad you could come, we so rarely get to meet Daniel's friends." Riley took a step to the side, letting David come forward.? She glanced over at Danny and gave him a soft smile. David took her hand a little gingerly, she seemed so small and fragile, it was hard to avoid the feeling that he was shaking hands with a china doll or something.? "It's a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Tej," he said.

Daniel caught Riley's look and smiled happily back.? "How's Father?" he asked, turning back to his mother.

"Protesting loudly every ten minutes that he's perfectly fit to be up and about," Margaret answered, rolling her eyes.?

"Will he be able to have supper with us?" Daniel asked hopefully.

"Yes, of course," Margaret said, "Just not for terribly long.? The doctor was quite firm about avoiding excitement." Daniel nodded, relieved.? He wanted to be sure Riley and David could meet his father as well. "Well, I shouldn't make you stand there," Margaret said.? "Please, come into the parlour and have a seat."? As she spoke, she lead them into the parlour.? A large sofa dominated the room, flanked by a pair of comfortable looking chairs, all facing an ornate fireplace.

Riley followed Margaret into the parlour and sat stiffly on the edge of the couch, making sure to smooth her chocolate brown skirt down underneath her and to keep her knees firmly pressed together.? She idly wondered if all Americans felt the overwhelming desire to mind their Ps and Qs when in the presence of an upper-class Englishwoman.

"Would you like something to drink?" Margaret asked.? "Tea? Coffee? Beer?"

"I'd love some tea.? I've never had proper English tea," Riley said with a little grin.

"I'll have tea, too," David said, feeling oddly reluctant to ask for a beer.

"Tea all around, then," Daniel said.? "Do you need any help, Mother?"

"No, no," Margaret said, waving his offer away.? "You stay here with your friends.? I'll be right back.? I must check on the roast, anyway."? She gave Riley and David a bright smile, and walked quickly out of the room.

Daniel grinned.? "She never stops moving," he said.

"She reminds me of Mama-san," she said softly, finally taking a moment to look around the room.

"They are rather similar.? I wonder how they'd get along?"

Riley laughed.? "They'll either hate each other or get along famously."? The room was tastefully decorated in warm colours - oranges, yellows, creams, with dashes of scarlet - with dark wood and lots of brass accents in the shape of candle holders and a large cross atop the marble mantel.? It was clear that the room was hardly used, not unlike a similar space in her parents' house in Massachusetts.

"Probably," Daniel said, chuckling.? "Didn't I say she'd be making a roast?" he added.

Margaret came back into the room a moment later, carrying a tray loaded down with a teapot, cups, saucers, sugar, cream, and a plate of chocolate biscuits.? She set the tray down on a small table and began pouring tea.? "How do you take yours?" she asked Riley.

She blinked, a little overwhelmed at the amount of stuff on the tray.? "Uh, cream and sugar, please?" she ventured.

Margaret nodded approvingly, and added the cream and sugar before handing the cup and saucer to her.? "And you, David?"

"Just sugar, please," David said, and quickly received a cup as well.?

Riley took the tea and rested it on her knee, just like she'd seen Judi Dench do in a movie.? It was too hot just yet to drink, so she just let it sit and cool off.? "That roast smells wonderful, Mrs...Margaret," she said, correcting herself quickly.

Daniel got a cup with cream and sugar, too, and Margaret sat down in one of chairs and smiled at her.? "Thank you, dear.? It will be ready in about fifteen minutes.? So tell me, how do you like our little town?"

"It's beautiful.? So green and quiet.? I was asking Danny on the way in if he thought there was a need for ballet instructors."

"Oh yes, you teach dance, too," Margaret said.? "Daniel told me about your studio.? I should think good instructors are always in demand. I've often thought of learning to dance," Margaret said.? "There just never seems to be time for it."? She took a sip of her own tea. "Perhaps the roast is ready," Margaret said, standing.? "If you'll excuse me, I shall check."? She smiled and walked out of the room just as quickly as before.

Riley smirked at David.? "See?? Mary Poppins."

David snorted.? "That make Dan Michael, then?"

She smirked at him again and then finished her cookie.? She glanced at Daniel and watched him silently for a moment.? Then she gently elbowed him.? "You okay?"

"Yes, I'm fine.? Though now I have to urge to sing 'Chim chimney."

She laughed and then started singing softly, "Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down." Margaret came back into the room a moment later and beckoned to all of them.? "Dinner will be served in just a moment.? Daniel, please show your friends to the dining room."? And then she was off again.

Daniel stood, and took Riley's hand.? "Walk this way, please," he said, just like John Cleese as he started out of the parlour.

Riley gulped down her tea and stood, following Daniel.? "Ministry of Silly Walks?"

David set his teacup and saucer back on the tray and walked behind Riley.? "You two start walking like he did, and I'm pretending I don't know you." She snorted and then crouched down a little and started taking tiny, mincing steps, and bobbing her head back and forth so that she looked like some odd hybrid between a penguin and a chicken.

Daniel was still laughing as he lead them into the dining room.? There was a large oak table in the middle of the room with six chairs around it, and a huge oak breakfront filled with china behind it.? Large windows lined one wall, and a buffet sat under one of those windows.? There were plants everywhere; hanging from ceiling planters, standing on tables, in large pots on the floor, and even lining some of the window sills.

"Wow," Riley breathed as she took in all the plants.? "Someone's got a green thumb."

"Well, Father's a botanist, and Mother is a conservationist," Daniel pointed out.? "It's safe to say they both rather like plants."

"Point," she said as she moved closer to a large ficus tree.? "I'm jealous.? I kill cacti by neglecting them."

"Well, perhaps Father can give you some tips." Daniel lead them to the table and pulled out a chair for Riley. "You sit here," he said.? Then he pointed at the seat across from her.? "That one's yours, David."? He sat down in the seat next to Riley.

David sat down where he was told to, and looked around.? "I feel like I'm in a 50s TV show."

"What if I don't want to sit next to you?? You have boy cooties," she said, but sat down anyway.? She grinned at David's comment.? "Leave It To Beaver?? Father Knows Best?"

"Father knows Beaver?"? David let out a short laugh.

"Only if he's lucky," she said with a smirk.

At that moment, a man who could only be Mr. Tej came into the dining room.? He was an inch or two shorter than Daniel, and quite a bit thinner.? It was obvious he'd recently lost weight, and his skin, which looked to be a shade or two darker than Daniel's, was ashy and drawn.? Despite his appearance, he moved with assurance, and his voice was strong when he spoke.? "Ah, Daniel, so glad you could bring your friends to meet us."? He walked over to David and extended his hand. "You must be David.? Please call me Nigel," he said.

David stood quickly and shook Nigel's hand.? "Pleased to meet you, sir," he said and reclaimed his seat once more.

"Likewise, likewise," Nigel said, coming around the table towards Riley. "And of course, you are Riley," he said to her.? "We've heard quite a lot about you from Daniel."? He was smiling when he said that, and reaching his hand out to her.

She took his hand and gave it a gentle shake.? "It's nice to meet you, Nigel.? How are you feeling?"

"Fine, just fine," he said briskly.? "I'm ready to get back to work, but Margaret insists I wait another week.? Well, never mind that.? I'm very glad to finally meet you in person."

She smiled softly at Nigel's words and nodded.? "I know how you feel, sir."? And she did, having spent at least three weeks in the hospital a year ago and raring to go only days after being released. Nigel nodded and walked past Daniel, patting him on the shoulder before sitting down at the head of the table.? He looked relieved to be sitting down, though he tried to hide it.? Daniel watched him with a faint look of concern before looking over at Riley and smiling.

"Should I go help your mom?" she said in a voice soft enough that only Super-Kitty hearing would pick up on it.

"If you'd like," he said, nodding towards the door that lead to the kitchen.? "She'll probably refuse help at first, though, just so you know."

She smirked and rose gracefully to her feet.? "I'm very persuasive," and she headed into the kitchen.? "Can I help at all?"

Margaret was in the process of setting the roast out on the counter when Riley came in.? She looked over and smiled at her.? "Oh, thank you, but it's no trouble at all."

"No, no trouble."? She reached for an apron that was hanging on a peg near the door that led to the back door, and tied it around her hips.? "So, what can I do?"

"Well, if you insist, how could I refuse?" Margaret said.? She pointed to a stack of bowls on a different counter.? "Would you mind putting the vegetables in those, then?"

"Sure thing," she said and began dishing out potatoes, onions, carrots and peas.? She had a million things she wanted to talk to Danny's mother about, but didn't know where to start.

"So Daniel tells us that you're a lawyer?" Margaret said as she set to work making gravy.

"Yes, I am.? It's sort of a family business.? My grandfather was District Attorney for almost 30 years."

"I see," Margaret said, after a short pause.? "Do you enjoy it?"

"Yes, very much.? Although, lately, it's been...difficult," she said, speaking the understatement of the year.

"Daniel told us about your recent appointment in...RhyDin," Margaret said, "but he didn't provide many details."

Riley ORourke

Date: 2010-07-06 20:00 EST
She chuckled wryly and began carrying bowls closer to the door to the dining room.? "Do you know much of American history?"

"Some," she replied.? "In what context?"? Meanwhile, Margaret finished up the gravy and poured it into an ornate boat, which she picked up, following Riley.

"The Wild West, specifically the complete lack of law and order then."

"Oh, yes.? Nigel is something of a fan of American Western movies."

"Well, think of me as John Wayne or Clint Eastwood."? She moved into the dining room now, and began putting vegetables on the table in front of the boys.

Daniel looked over and gave Riley a big smile when she came out carrying bowls.? If Mother was letting her help, she must really like Riley.? "Thank you, sundari," he said when she put a bowl in front of him. She gave Danny a smile and then returned to the kitchen to bring out the rest of the things.

Margaret set down the gravy boat and went back to pick up the roast.? "So basically," she said, continuing the conversation, "You're the new Sheriff in a lawless city?"

"Yes, exactly.? And it's possibly the single most difficult thing that I've ever done," she said and followed Margaret back into the dining room.? "Is that everything from the kitchen?"

"Yes, that's the lot," Margaret said, "Thank you.? Did you know it would be so difficult when you accepted the position?"

Riley took her seat next to Daniel again and reached for his hand under the table.? "No, actually, I didn't.? Well, okay.? That's not entirely true.? I knew I'd have a challenge, but I never thought it'd be quite as hard as it's turned out to be." Daniel took her hand, listening as they spoke.? With his ears, he'd heard the entire conversation.?

"Yet you still keep on," Margaret said.? "Commendable."

A guilty look crossed her face and she glanced down at the plate in front of her.? "I've considered quitting recently," she admitted softly.

"Everyone's thought about giving up on a tough situation once or twice," Nigel put in briskly.? "It's whether you follow through that matters." She nodded and looked up, her normal, confident expression having returned.? She looked at the food spread on the table and her stomach growled loudly.?

Daniel grinned, hearing that rumble, and squeezed her hand under the table.?? He looked over at his mother.? "Well, that's enough of the Inquisition for now, wouldn't you say?"?

Margaret nodded, looking over at Nigel.? He nodded, too, then bowed his head in preparation for saying Grace.? He waited a few seconds for everyone to prepare before speaking. Daniel glanced over at Riley and shrugged.? His parents were a lot more religious than he was.? Then he bowed his head, too.? Across the table, David did the same. Riley's brows rose subtly.? She was unused to saying grace before a meal, had in fact only done so a handful of times in her entire life.? Still, ever respectful of other's religious views and not wanting to piss off her...Daniel's parents, she bowed her head silently and gave Danny's hand a squeeze underneath the table.

"Bless O Lord these gifts to our use and us to thy loving service; and keep us ever mindful of the needs of others. Amen,"? Nigel said.? Then he raised his head and smiled at everyone.

"Amen," Margaret echoed.

Mindful.? The corner of her mouth tugged up in a tiny smile and she wondered if that prayer had been tailored to her Buddhist world-view.? Not one to stand on ceremony, especially since it'd been...two hours...since her last meal, she reached for the bowl of roasted carrots in front of her and dished out a spoonful before passing the bowl to Daniel.

Daniel took the carrots and scooped out a helping for himself, then passed it on to his father, who, in turn, passed it to David after he'd gotten his share.? David put a small amount on his plate, then leaned to hand the bowl off to Margaret.? Meanwhile, Margaret handed the carving knife over to Daniel, saying, "I'd like you to carve the roast this time, Daniel."? It was clear she felt it would be too much work for Nigel to stand and carve the meat. Nigel grimaced faintly, but didn't argue with his wife.

"Certainly," Daniel said, accepting the knife and standing.? He carved up the roast with the casual skill and speed one would expect from a trained chef, deftly plating the cuts without even needing a fork to move them.? He winked at Riley, adding an extra slice to her plate. She felt absurdly flattered at this gesture and rewarded him with a smile.? Vegetables were still making their way around the table and she was certain to take a tiny bit of everything, even if it wasn't something she'd usually eat.

Within moments, everyone had full plates, and the meal began.? There wasn't much talk while people ate, though Margaret did make a bit of small-talk, asking David and Riley about their jobs, and telling them a little about being a Professor at Oxford.

Riley was damned impressed with the food, despite her assumptions going into the meal.? She had three helpings of everything, drawing looks of amazement from Daniel's parents.? They were no doubt wondering where it all went. Even though they were used to the prodigious amount of food Daniel's metabolism required, they clearly hadn't quite considered that Riley might need just as much food.? Margaret was obviously flattered by the obvious enjoyment Riley was showing for her cooking. David ate quietly and steadily.? He didn't have the same kind of appetite the Cats did, but the food was good, so he put away a fair amount.

After the plates had metaphorically been licked clean and Riley had stolen the last, lonely pea from David's plate, she sat back and covered her mouth with her napkin before letting loose a burp.? She looked sidelong at Daniel, knowing he was the only one likely to have heard it. Daniel glanced at her, humor showing in his eyes, but he didn't do anything else to draw attention to her gastronomic commentary.? "Your roast was as delicious as always, Mother," he said.

"Yes, it was amazingly good.? I'd always heard negative things about English food," said the Ugly American, promptly putting her foot in her mouth. Daniel not-so-casually stepped on that foot as it descended from her mouth. Her eyes grew wide and she shot him a wounded 'What did I say?' look.

"Americans tend to think our food unimaginative," Margaret said with a slightly lecturing tone, "but they don't understand the beauty that can be found in perfecting the mundane."

Riley nodded but wisely kept her mouth shut.? She looked across the table at David, a brow raised with faint humour. "So, uh...What's for dessert?"

Margaret laughed.? "Well, Daniel told me of your fondness for fruit, a fondness I share, so I've made a trifle.? Unfortunately," she continued, directing her look at Nigel," it's time for you to return to bed.? I shall bring your dessert there momentarily."

"I'm perfectly fine," Nigel protested, but to no avail.? In short order, Margaret had him out of his seat and back in bed.

"It was wonderful to meet you, Nigel.? I hope you're feeling better soon, sir,? Riley called out after him.

"Thank you, dear," he said before the door closed behind him.

Daniel looked over at her and smiled.? "I told you they would like you," he said, poking her gently in the ribs.? "Even if you can't keep your mouth closed."

She pulled a sour face at him.? "What did I say that was wrong?"

"Well, first, calling attention to someone's appearance when you've just met them is considered a bit rude here," he explained.? "Also, the way you brought up the bad things you've heard about English food made it sound as though you were shocked Mother's food could be good."? He wasn't scolding her, his tone stayed level and non-accusatory.? He was just pointing out the customs differed.

"Oh," she said, feeling chastised nonetheless.? She glanced across the table to David.? "Maybe you ought to teach me how to keep my yap shut instead of how to handle a gun."

David snorted.? "That one's easy.? Don't open it."

"Gee, you're a fat lotta help," Riley shot back.

Daniel put his hand on her shoulder and squeezed gently.? "Don't worry about it, my love.? I'm sure you smelled just as well as I did that Mother really does like you." She nodded and sat back against her chair in relief.

Margret came back into the room carrying a large glass bowl containing layered pound cake, custard, strawberry slices, and strawberry jam.? The top was covered in custard, and garnished with strawberry halves. Riley groaned softly and began salivating.? "Ohhh," she said softly, eyes lasered in on the trifle bowl.

Daniel chuckled and whispered. "Wipe your mouth, sundari." A little 'heh' came from David's side of the table, as well. Her hand was half-way to her mouth before she realised he was teasing her.? She elbowed him none-so-gently in the ribs. Daniel grunted softly as the breath was pushed out of him.? It didn't remove his smile, though.

Margret set the trifle down on the table and began dishing out bowls to each of them, herself last. Riley was practically vibrating in her seat with excitement as she watched Margaret dishing out the deliciousness.? She reached for her bowl with two hands and only a supreme amount of will power kept her from wolfing it down like a rabid wolverine. "Eat up," Margaret commanded, though none of them really needed encouragement.

David took a spoonful and his eyebrows went up.? "Mmm," he said, swallowing.? "This is incredible." Riley made a noise that could be construed as agreement, and indeed would have given her verbose compliments to Margaret if her mouth hadn't been positively stuffed with yumminess.

Margret beamed at how rapidly her dessert vanished.? Once everyone was done, she lead them back to the parlour and offered coffee and brandy to them.? She sat with them for a while, chatting about RhyDin, Earth, and other random topics. Finally, around ten o'clock, Margaret stood and apologized for having to cut their conversation short.? "I'm afraid we've reached my bed time," she said.

Daniel stood and gave his Mother a big hug.? "We'll be leaving in the morning, Mother," he said.

Riley gave Danny a soft, sad smile and then slowly stood, gathering up coffee cups and things, intending to take them into the kitchen to help with the clearing up. Margaret hugged Daniel fiercely, and nodded.? Then she cleared up the rest of the dishes and walked with Riley into the kitchen. Riley was standing at the sink, elbow-deep in sudsy water as she washed delicate china cups and saucers.? "Thank you for dinner and dessert, Margaret.? It was very good and I'm so happy to have met you at last."

"Likewise, dear.? It was a pleasure to have you here." Margaret said.? She was quiet for the rest of the time they spent cleaning up, then, as she took Riley back out towards the others, she took Riley's hands and stood on her tiptoes to give her a peck on the cheek.? "I expect to see you again soon," she whispered before turning to shake hands with David and give Daniel another hug.

Riley still had to stoop to receive Margret's soft kiss.? She smiled softly and turned away for a moment, blinking back a sudden tide of tears that threatened. "We'll come back as soon as we can," Daniel promised his mother.? "Take care of Father."? Then he took Riley's hand and led her out to the car, with David following behind.
